UCR’s Vegan Chef & Food Justice

Activist Inspires Students By Fatima Mirza, Senior Staff Writer - Highlander News

Bryant Terry is definitely not just a vegan chef. And when he came to speak to

UCR students and staff on Tuesday, May 17th, he did not just deliver a

speech—he did so much more. Terry inspired the audience with his charismatic

presence and spoke about much deeper matters than the culinary arts.

In the past, Bryant Terry has been described as an "eco-super hero," a food

justice activist and not to mention a great chef. Amongst his other many

accomplishments, he is the author of two critically acclaimed books—"Vegan

Soul Kitchen: Fresh, Healthy, and Creative African- American Cuisine" and

"Grub: Ideas for an Urban Organic Kitchen." His popular books were on sale at the event and audience members had

an opportunity to meet with him and have their book signed.

To an audience of approximately a hundred students and faculty, Terry spoke of topics such as food justice,

explaining how important it is that everyone has access to healthy food options. He described the disadvantages that

low-income communities face when it comes to acquiring resources and how often times they have no choice but to

purchase unhealthy processed food. Read more, visit http://www.highlandernews.org/features/vegan-chef-and-food-

Ringling Bros. and

Barnum & Bailey Circus Starting August 10

th

Don’t miss Fully Charged (SM), the all-new surge of circus

entertainment from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® where

megawatts of thrills explode off of the arena floor with breathtaking dare-devilry, superhuman stunts and

never-before-seen performances that energize Children of All Ages!

The most electrifying edition ever of Ringling Bros® celebrates performance power that boosts circus-goers excitement. The amazing acts, which can only be seen at The Greatest Show On Earth®, include Tabayara, a dynamic animal trainer whose

rare ability to communicate with animals allows him to ride rearing stallions at a fully charged gallop and orchestrate majestic four-ton Asian Elephants in a symphony of dance. When he stands inside a cage, eye to eye with twelve ferocious tigers, Tabayara sees family where others see danger.

Audiences will feel the earth shake when the

Ukrainian strongman duo of Dmitry Nadolinkskiy

and Ruslan Gilmulin, who are as wide as they are

tall, enter the arena. The brawny twosome give the

word manpower a whole new meaning as they lift

large cumbersome telephone poles, which weigh up to half-a-ton, and twirl them above their heads while

acrobats balance atop.

The Fearless Fernandez Brothers dial up the thrills as they perform

daring feats of athleticism on the Twin Turbines of Steel, including,

extreme jumps and twists inside the moving wheels! Audiences will

crackle with excitement as they watch Guillermo perform a three

hundred sixty degree flying forward somersault, three stories in air, a

feat so difficult it has only been attempted by one other person in the

141-year history of Ringling Bros. The Human Fuse, Brian Miser, sets

the arena sky ablaze as he rockets through the air from his self-made

human crossbow. Don’t blink as he flashes across the sky in less than a

second, and travels 80 feet at 65 miles per hour.

Ever wonder how many clowns it takes to change a light bulb? The

hilarious hoopla continues to flow as the clowns from the world-famous

Ringling Bros.® clown-alley, charge-up the audiences’ funny bones

with hysterical silly antics and clownish comedy.

You can only experience this current of excitement at Ringling Bros. Fully Charged! Get your ticket for high-voltage fun

Raising Our Boys to Become Men

Society systematically crushes our caterpillars and then complains that there

are no Black Butterflies. The onus is on us to train up our boys (teach them

how to walk/talk/think/behave like men of Character, Commi...tment,

CommUNITY) in the way of African Centered Warriorhood so that when they

grow into Black Men they will not depart from it. Whenever we experience

pain or sadness, it is because we have become separated from what, or whom,

we love and whenever we are inspired and joyful it is because we are one with

what or whom we love. All human challenges and successes can be explained

through this awareness, Sankofa!

Office Of A Husband

Tony Bradford says: If a man desires the office of a Husband, he aspires

to a noble task and desires to do a good work. Every married man is not a

husband and a Real Husband is husband long before he gets married. For

too long "married men" have dishonored God's Creation, these untrained,

non-licensed, unapproved and non-certified "day workers" have given the

office of Husband and the institution

of marriage a bad name.

"There is no secret to a long

marriage. It's hard work...it's serious

business... and certainly not for cowards." Ossie Davis

True husbanding requires much study and plenty of practice in order to

become proficient. To be God-approved & Christ-certified, it is necessary

to prepare oneself to learn how to walk in the way of Love and to follow hard after the example left by The

Husband of husbands 1 Corinthians 12:31-14:1/Matthew 11:28-30

Hosea 2:19 I will betroth you to me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love

and compassion. 20 I will betroth you in[a] faithfulness, and you will acknowledge the LORD.

Yelp Reviews From E.K. of Rancho Cucamonga, CA

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Flemings. I made

reservations 4 days in advance to make sure I

would get a good time. We went on a Tuesday

evening, which is a bit off-peak. That helped. The

wait staff was very attentive to our table at all

times. Our waiter, Vincent, was very helpful, knowledgeable about food and wine, friendly, and courteous at all

times.

What you have to remember about places like this is that you are getting high-end pieces of meat (or whatever

you're getting), so be prepared to spend some money. We spent about $220 for 4 people. For that money, 3 of us

got some great steaks. The best I've had in quite a while. My whole group was very happy with our food and

service. My dad and I got the rib-eye, my mom got the filet, and my wife got the crab appetizer (she wasn't as

hungry as we were. My rib-eye was a tiny bit fatty around the edges, but what do you expect from a rib-eye

anyway, right? I had a nice zinfandel with my steak. I appreciated that Vincent let me taste a bit of the wine

before pouring it all in my glass. I'm surprised how many high-end places have forgotten to do this. Not these

guys! He also took the time to recommend a good white wine to go with my wife's food.

We had the blueberry cheesecake and the walnut chocolate turtle pie. The latter was something in between a

brownie and a cake with tons of walnut, and chocolate. I have to say I enjoyed the cheesecake more than the

ones from the cheesecake factory. The blueberry sauce was outstanding. My dad and I had a cup of coffee with

dessert. Even THAT was great. Starbucks quality coffee.

Oh, by the way... We got 2 $50 gift certificates at Costco for $80. That's 20 bucks saved right there! You should

work that angle!

You can tell we all enjoyed ourselves greatly. We will be going back soon for a special occasion, I'm sure. If you

haven't gone, you owe it a try. If you enjoy really good service, good food, and attention to details from the staff

then you will not be disappointed.

What’s YOUR Smile Type?

Everyone's grin is unique. If you look closely, you’ll see that mouths are much like

fingerprints in how different they are from one another. On the surface, mouths look

the same, but the difference is in the details.

QUIZ: How Symmetric Is Your Face?

Mouths convey emotions—a smile, a frown, a gasp, bewilderment or the inner

happiness you can’t hide. That’s not even taking into consideration that lips come in

tons of shapes and sizes. It's no wonder your mouth is a messenger in many ways.

The subtle muscles of your mouth determine how you communicate in your

environment. A dozen or so muscles connect with the circular muscle around your mouth (that’s just a

fraction of those around your eyes). Some suck in the cheeks, others pucker the lips, or lift and lower them.

Nissan Working to Bring

EV Charging to Roadside

Service FROM Carson Nissan Blog

While a lot of things have changed in the auto industry with the introduction of the all-electric Nissan Leaf,

here’s one thing that hasn’t: Just the same way drivers of gasoline-powered vehicles occasionally find

themselves out of of fuel and in need of roadside service, the same thing can happen to owners of the Leaf. So,

in the same way traditional roadside assistance can handle an empty fuel tank by bringing along a few extra

gallons of gas, Nissan is now working to make it just as easy for Leaf drivers to get back on the road: The

automaker is teaming up with the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) to test service vehicles capable of

recharging EVs without the need to tow them to a stationary charging point.

In fact, the first such vehicles, developed by Nissan and operated by the JAF, are already on duty in Japan.

There, according to Masakazu Kume JAF executive director, they are helping “create an environment where

motorists can drive EVs with the assurance that assistance is available” and supporting that country’s adoption

of EVs as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional gas- or diesel-powered. Learn more at

Does FHA Offer Sweat

Equity Grants to

Homeowners? When considering your options for an FHA home loan, one alternative to a typical

home loan is the FHA fixer-upper loan. Some like the challenge of remodeling a

home they can buy for less than the cost of a more ―perfect‖ new purchase home.

Those looking for home loans for fixer-uppers

or even HUD REO properties may be curious

about grant money available for home repairs.

There are HUD press releases which discuss such FHA/HUD money and the latest

disbursements to state and local agencies. Can an FHA borrower get some of this sweat

equity grant money directly from the FHA or HUD?

The short answer is no.

FHA press releases like a recent item about the FHA awarding $27 million in ―sweat

equity grants‖, (HUD Press Release No. 11-122), include a fact FHA borrowers should

pay close attention to--these HUD grants are awarded to organizations such as Habitat

For Humanity or the Tierra del Sol Corporation. These two agencies were both

recipients of federal funds via the Self-Help Home Ownership Opportunity Fund

(SHOP).

According to the FHA press release, ―The SHOP program provides federal

grants on a competitive basis to national and regional nonprofit organizations

and consortia that have experience in administering self-help housing

programs.‖

Individuals looking for grant money to repair or remodel a home may be able

to apply for grant money as part of a state or local program, but the FHA

does not disburse it directly to home owners. It provides funds to the

organizations, which then administer the money as part of the state or local

program. The FHA provides additional information about such programs.

There’s a difference between an FHA grant for home improvements and FHA loans for home improvements. The FHA will

insure different types of loans for fixer-upper properties, HUD home purchases, and standard upgrades and/or improvements

to a property when purchased with an FHA home loan.

Consider the FHA 203 (k) Rehabilitation mortgage for such purposes or explore the FHA official site.
