Maimonides Geriatric Centre Foundation Suite Dreams Capital RenovationCampaign recently received a very generous bequest from the Estate of the lateIsaac Braunstein. Mr. Braunstein was a humble man who worked several jobs tohelp care for his family, while continuing to play his beloved violin in what is nowthe Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Even as thefamily struggled to make ends meet, Mr.Braunstein and his wife, Clara, diligently putaside savings for a rainy day.

The Braunsteins always dreamt of one daybeing able to provide for others less fortunate,and leaving their money to a health care facilityseemed an obvious choice given that Mr.Braunstein put great value on his health. “Hebelieved that the most important thing is to bewell. He always said that if you do not have health,you have nothing,” says grandson Greg Huyerrecalling how his grandfather, at age 101, stillexercised daily. His grandson Jonathan recalls oneof Isaac’s visits to the doctor at 100 years old whenhe wasn’t feeling well. “The doctor told him thathe couldn’t make him any younger. To that, mygrandfather replied that he didn’t want to get younger but rather he wanted to getolder.” How fitting that he should leave a generous donation to a facility likeMaimonides that cares for the elderly population, including his wife of 69 years,who spent her final days in the care of the Hospital of Hope. “Maimonides veryaccurately reflects my grandfather’s core values. It is filled with caring people wholove life. It provides comfort and support. It is truly a place that my grandfather feltwas a worthy institution to support,” adds grandson Tim Huyer.

The recently-renovated terrace off the main lobby will be named in honour ofthe donation from the late Isaac and Clara Braunstein. La campagne de financement du projet de rénovation Suites Royales de laFondation du Centre gériatrique Maimonides a reçu un don très généreux de lasuccession de feu Isaac Braunstein. M. Braunstein était un homme modeste qui aoccupé plusieurs emplois pour faire vivre sa famille, tout en continuant à jouer son

cher violon au sein de ce qui allait devenirl’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. Même s’ilsavaient du mal à arriver, M. Braunstein et sa femmeClara économisaient en cas de mauvais jours.

Les Braunstein avaient toujours rêvé d’être unjour assez fortunés pour venir en aide à ceux qui enont besoin. Laisser un don à un établissement desoins de santé semblait un choix évident puisque M.Braunstein valorisait la santé. Son petit-fils GregHuyer se rappelle cette phrase de son grand-père : « La santé, c’est le plus important. Quand on a lasanté, on a tout ». Il se rappelle aussi que son grand-père faisait de l’exercice tous les jours, même à 101ans. Son petit-fils, Jonathan, se souvient d’une visitede son grand-père chez le médecin à l’âge de 100ans. « Le médecin lui avait dit « Je ne peux pas vousrajeunir, Monsieur », ce à quoi grand-papa avait

répondu : « Je ne veux pas rajeunir, je veux vivre plus longtemps ». N’est-ce pasapproprié qu’il donne généreusement à un établissement comme Maimonides quiest voué à la population âgée? M. Braunstein avait pris soin de sa femme de 69 ansqui s’est éteinte à l’Hôpital juif de l’espérance. « Maimonides incarne les valeurs debase de mon grand-père. On y trouve des gens compatissants qui aiment la vie.C’est un établissement qui offre bien-être et soutien et qui, selon mon grand-père,méritait son aide », ajoute son petit-fils Tim Huyer.

Maimonides Geriatric Centre has received a glowing accreditation report from the Canadian Council of HealthServices Accreditation(CCHSA) and is fully accredited for another three years. “I’m so proud of the teamworkthat Maimonides is recognized for, from our dedicated staff to our community partners, volunteers, anddonors. The result is the best care possible for our residents,” says Len Lewkowict, President of the CentreBoard. The Centre garnered high praise for the quality of care given to its residents as well as its home-likeenvironment, innovative approach to community services and excellent collaboration amongst departments.The surveyors emphasized that people are the biggest strength at Maimonides.

Maimonides Geriatric Centre Foundation mournsthe recent passing of our beloved board memberDave Singerman.

Dave Singerman was activelyinvolved at the MaimonidesFoundation since the 1980s, andwas a very successful fundraiser,advisor and leader. He was thePresident of the Foundationboard in 1997-1998 andremained a board member upuntil his death a few monthsago. In the early 1990’s Davefounded the Foundation’s mostenduring project, the GolfTournament. He served on thegolf committee every year sinceits inception. Dave served as chair of the Centre’s85th Anniversary Gala, and was instrumental in organizing two Jackie Mason benefitperformances, which produced a record level ofdonations for the Foundation. In 2003, Dave co-chaired the Foundation’s newest project, theBattle of the Bands, an event that has grown to a two-night extravaganza, last year at theSpectrum. Dave received the Foundation's ABCDAward (Above and Beyond the Call of Duty),acknowledging the important contribution he hasmade to our community. We will miss him greatly.

très cher, Dave Singerman. Dave Singerman a participé

activement à la Fondation deMaimonides depuis les années1980 et il était un excellentcollecteur de fonds, conseiller etleader. Il a agi comme présidentdu conseil de la Fondation en1997-1998 et comme membre duConseil jusqu’à son décès il y aquelques mois. Au début desannées 1990, Dave a mis sur piedle tournoi de golf, notre projet leplus durable et a fait partie ducomité de golf depuis le début.

De plus, il a présidé le gala du 85e anniversaire duCentre, et a joué un rôle clé dans l’organisation dedeux spectacles bénéfices de Jackie Mason qui ontproduit des dons record pour la Fondation. En2003, Dave a co-présidé le nouveau projet de lafondation – Battle of the Bands, un spectaclesomptueux qui a été présenté deux soirs l’andernier au Spectrum. Dave a reçu le prix ABCD de la Fondation en reconnaissance de sondévouement hors pair et de son apport à lacommunauté. Il nous manquera beaucoup.

Le Centre gériatrique Maimonides a obtenu un rapport d’agrément brillant par le Conseil canadiend’agrément des services de santé (CCASS) et le statut d’agrément complet pour trois autres années. « Je suistrès fier que Maimonides soit reconnu pour son travail d’équipe, mettant à contribution notre personneldévoué, nos partenaires dans la collectivité, les bénévoles et les donateurs. Le résultat se traduit par demeilleurs soins pour nos résidents », affirme Len Lewkowict, président du Conseil d’administration duCentre. Notre Centre a reçu des éloges pour la qualité des soins dispensés à nos résidents, notre milieu de typefamilial, notre approche innovatrice aux services communautaires et l’excellente collaboration qui règneentre les départements. Les inspecteurs ont fait ressortir que nos gens sont le meilleur atout de Maimonides.

The 4th annual Maimonides Battle of the Bands was a rock’nsuccess generating $190,000 towards the Suite DreamsCapital Renovation Campaign to refurbish all of theresidents’ rooms.

After three years at Club Soda, the two-night sellout eventmoved to a bigger venue – the Spectrum on WednesdayDecember 6th and Thursday December 7th 2006. Eight amateurbands made up of dentists, lawyers and other professionalsbelted it out to raise funds for Maimonides Geriatric Centre.

“Wow! Two incredible nights at one incredible venue. It waswonderful to see so many important people in thecommunity come out for two evenings of great fun and tosupport a great cause,” says Rory Olson, co-chair of the Battleof the Bands committee. “There is such a huge buzz in thecommunity about this event. Tickets to this show are alwayshot commodities,” adds co-chair Elliot Mechanic.

Andy Nulman was an exceptional MC for both nightsopening the show performing with The Matt Demons.Cooneytunes jingle master Ian Cooney did a brilliant job asproducer, and performed with Sky Lounge.

Thanks to every one who helped make the 2006 event arock’n success. We look forward to this year’s show, on themove again to The Metropolis on December 5th and 6th 2007.

Un succès rock !!Des profits et une foule record aunouveau endroit tout en s’amusantLa quatrième édition de l’événement Battle of the Bands deMaimonides a connu un franc succès : une collecte de 190 000 $ quisera versée à la campagne Suites royales ayant pour but de remettreà neuf toutes les chambres des résidents.

Après trois années au Club Soda, l’événement de deux soirs àguichets fermés s’est déroulé dans une plus grande salle – leSpectrum, le mercredi 6 décembre et le jeudi 7 décembre 2006. Huitorchestres amateurs – formés de dentistes, d’avocats et d’autresprofessionnels – se sont produits devant une salle comble pourrecueillir des fonds au profit du Centre gériatrique Maimonides.

« Wow! Deux soirées mémorables dans une salle incroyable. Quelplaisir de voir autant de personnalités de la collectivité se déplacerpour appuyer une cause aussi valable », déclare Rory Olson, co-président du comité Battle of the Bands. « Cet événement suscitebeaucoup d’enthousiasme dans la collectivité et les billets sevendent comme des petits pains chauds », ajoute le co-présidentElliot Mechanic.

Andy Nulman a rempli son rôle de maître de cérémonie avec brio lesdeux soirs, se donnant en spectacle avec The Matt Demons. Le roi desrefrains publicitaires, Ian Cooney, a fait un excellent travail commeproducteur et nous a présenté une pièce spéciale avec Sky Lounge.

“Without the Foundation’s help, I would never dare todream of being able to provide this kind of high-techequipment for our residents,” says Silvana Mauro,Rehabilitation Coordinator as she helps a resident on arecently purchased Nu-Step machine, funded by theFoundation.

Thanks to a generous donation from LindorInc, the Foundation recently purchased 11portable machines that make taking bloodpressure, measuring oxygen levels and takingtemperature seamless. “This kind of cuttingedge equipment improves the residents’ qualityof life,” says Lucie Tremblay, Director of Nursingand Clinical Services “We often get asked bydonors for a wish list of needed equipment. It isnot so simple since the needs of our residentschange daily and the advancements intechnology are changing just as quickly,” adds

Tremblay. “When someone donates money, they like to see the

result. It’s important for our donors to know that theyare making a noticeable difference in people’s lives.Equipment is very tangible and allows the donor to seefor themselves the impact they have,” says AllenQuallenberg, Foundation President.

La réponse n’est pas aussi simpleque cela étant donné que les besoins de nos résidentschangent chaque jour et que les progrès technologiquessont tout aussi rapides », ajoute Mme Tremblay.

« Lorsqu’une personne fait un don d’argent, elle aimebien voir les résultats. C’est important pour nosdonateurs de savoir qu’ils font une différence palpabledans la vie des gens. L’équipement est très tangible etpermet aux donateurs de constater par eux-mêmes leurimpact », affirme Allen Quallenberg, président de laFondation.

After four years as President of the MaimonidesFoundation, Larry Nachshen has stepped down.“Larry was a visionary leader who nurtured theconcept of collaboration, friend-raising and fund-spending. He set a remarkable example and is atrue friend,” says Len Lewkowict, Centre BoardPresident. Larry mentored many board membersincluding the current Foundation President, AllenQuallenberg. “I am honoured to be at the helm ofthis wonderful organization and hope to continueLarry’s vision,” says Quallenberg.

Your mother or father needs long-term care, what now?The first step is to contact the local CSSS (formerly CLSC) to have your parentevaluated. If your parent is at a hospital, the hospital social worker can also do theinitial evaluation. The social worker will fill out the proper forms requesting suitableplacement based on the care required and the facility of choice.

It’s been a few weeks since the application, what kind of follow-up can be done?It is important to note that Maimonides does not make any decisions regardingadmissions. All decisions are made centrally by the Agency of Health and Social Service.Follow-up should be made directly to the social worker who completed the initialevaluation. The social worker can be contacted for news about the application process.

How long is the wait?The good news is that waiting lists for long-term care in the Jewish community are down.The current wait time for a long-term care bedat Maimonides is approximately 6 months.

How to prepare for admission?It is important that the person who is beingplaced is made aware of the impendingadmission even if they are cognitivelyimpaired. Families should be advised to avoidfalse explanations to their loved onesregarding placement, i.e. “You will be going fora doctor’s visit.” During the wait period,monthly tours are available to the resource theperson will be moving in to.

A bed is ready.What next?When a place actually becomes available,the social worker will let the client know.Due to the shortage of beds, governmentguidelines are that the client/family has 24 hours to accept this place and move to Maimonides 48 hours from the time the social worker calls. If you feel you are not ready, the space can be refused.Maimonides will delay 30 days and thenmake contact again when the next bedbecomes available. If the client is still notready to come, their file will be closed and anew request will need to be made if thesituation changes.

On devrait conseiller aux familles d’éviter de fournirde fausses explications à leur proche concernant le placement,par ex. : ne pas lui dire qu’il s’en va à une visite chez le médecin.Durant la période d’entente, il pourra y avoir une visitemensuelle de l’établissement où la personne sera hébergée.

Un lit est prêt. Quelle est la prochaine étape ?Lorsqu’un lit se libère, la travailleuse sociale informe le client.En raison de la pénurie de lits et les directives gouverne-mentales, le client ou la famille a 24 heures pour accepter ourefuser cette place et 48 heures pour déménager, à compter dumoment de l'appel de la travailleuse social. Si le client n’est pasprêt, il peut refuser cette place. Il y aura un délai de 30 jours etMaimonides communiquera de nouveau avec le client pourl’informer lorsque le prochain lit sera disponible. Si le clientn’est pas encore prêt, son dossier sera fermé et une nouvelledemande devra être présentée lorsque sa situation changera.

Au Centre, six chambres à un lit au sont réservées aux soins de répit pour unepériode de deux à quatre semaines, à un coût de 8 $ par jour qui est fixé par legouvernement. Les aidants ont droit à huit semaines de répit par année. Notons queces séjours peuvent être réservés d’avance si vous prévoyez assister à un mariage ouà un bar mitzvah. Ce programme est accessible par l’entremise du CLSC local.

For example, ifyou have been taking care of your husband who has Parkinsons at home for the lasttwo years and you want to take a vacation or just need to recharge your batteries,Maimonides offers short-term relief. Six private rooms at the Centre are designatedfor respite care for 2-4 week stays at a government regulated cost of 8$ per day.Caregivers are entitled to 8 weeks of respite a year. It is important to note that thistime may be booked in advance, for instance, to attend an out of town wedding orbar mitzvah. Access to this program is made through the local CLSC.

Maimonides Director of Nursing and Clinical Services Lucie Tremblay was recently recognized withthe 2007 Professional Award from the Association of Jewish Aging Services (AJAS) of North America.The award recognizes an individual who reflects the highest standardsof professional knowledge and expertise, shows exceptional leadershipand is highly respected by, staff, residents and families. “Lucie is a gem. We are so lucky to have her at Maimonides,” says Barbra Gold,Maimonides Executive Director.

The Canadian Association of Wound Care recently presented Silvana Mauro, Lyne Camiréand Fruan Tabamo with the “You Make a Difference” Award for Wound Care. It recognizesthe exceptional initiative,innovation and effort towardfurthering the developmentof wound care practice inthe area of: personal growth,bedside practice, educationalprograms, and/or guideline/policy building.Congratulations!

Dr. Brian Gore, Lynn Fournier, Dr. Johanne Monette, LucieTremblay participated in “Optimisation of psychological andbehavioral symptoms of dementia (PBSD) in long-term care: apilot study” at the Congrès international francophone degérontologie et gériatrie in Quebec City.

Silvana Mauro was a member of a scientific committee thatcompleted the National Education program on restraintreduction, in collaboration with the Quebec Ministry of Health.This program is called “Programme de formation: Vers unchangement de pratique afin de reduire le recours a lacontention et a l’isolement”. Ms. Mauro also co-authored severalchapters on the subject.

Madeleine Senosier, Infection Control Consultant, made apresentation entitled « Surveillance en soins de longue durée et autres milieux » at the Journées Annuelles de Prevention desInfection.

Maimonides Geriatric Centre is recycling usedhearing aids, thanks to the commitment of

RNA Nechama Surik. “The governmentpays for only one aid every five years forthe elderly. Each aid is about $1000 and,if a resident is not eligible for the one

covered by Medicare and can’t afford to buy one, they end up nothearing. This greatly limits their quality of life,” says Surik, who herself requires two aids. After recentlyappearing on a number of local news shows, Surik received over a dozen second-hand hearing aids. These arebeing used for teaching purposes in her regular “walk in” clinics or, after being checked and adjusted byaudioprosthesists, distributed to those in need. “Most people didn’t know what to do with them once the personpassed away so the aids just sat in a drawer.” These can be recycled at a fraction of the cost of new ones. La somme allouée est d’environ 1000 $ et si un résident n’est pas admissible à l’appareilcouvert par l’assurance-maladie et qu’il n’a pas les moyens d’en acheter un, il doit vivre avec sa surdité. Saqualité de vie est alors grandement diminuée », affirme Nechama, qui requiert elle-même deux prothèsesauditives. Après son passage à plusieurs émissions de nouvelles locales, elle a reçu plus d’une douzained’appareils usagés. Après avoir été vérifiés et ajustés par des audioprothésistes, ils servent aux finsd’enseignement lors des cliniques organisées régulièrement par Nechama, et ils sont ensuite distribués à ceux quien ont besoin. « Après le décès d’une personne, la famille ne sait pas quoi faire de la prothèse du défunt et larange dans un tiroir ». Maimonides continues its growing partnershipwith the Art for Healing Foundation. Art galleriesare being created throughout Maimonides toenhance the physical space thanks in large partto the generous donations by several local artistsand collectors.

“Galleries” are what the Art for HealingFoundation creates when multiple art works aredonated by a given artist or collector and thengrouped together. There is always a theme foreach gallery and they are named, complete withaccompanying biography, in honour of theirdonor. To date, galleries have been hung in eachof the four wings of the 5th floor and have begunto be installed on the 4th floor. Here are photos ofseveral of the artists as they visit their namesakegallery.

1 Art collector A. McKenzie Brockman is seenhere with his good friend, author and historian,Joe King, right. Brockman donated sixteenpieces from his personal collection to create a 4th floor gallery named in his honour. Kinghimself has donated sixty-five images from histwo books based on the history of the JewishCommunity of Montreal, “From the Ghetto tothe Main” and “Baron Byng to Bagels”. Theseimages are slated for installation as a gallery, thisspring, on the 4th floor.

2 Artist Myrna Brooks Bercovitch is picturedalongside her husband, Norm. Her print gallery,comprised of works from different stages of hercareer, and of several different mediums, hangson the 5th floor.

100 YEARS100 ANS

As Maimonides Geriatric Centre approaches its 100th

anniversary in 2010, we wanted to profile some of ourresidents who recently celebrated their centennial. 100 years is truly a remarkable achievement.Congratulations!!

Bella SchonfeldMrs. Bella Schonfeld was born in a small HungarianVillage on February 10, 1907, the oldest of sevenchildren. Her father died in World War 1 and hermother was left to raise all seven kids alone. Mrs.Schonfeld got married in 1927 and had four childrenbetween 1929-1939. This was a very difficult period forJews, leading to World War 2. In 1942, Mrs. Schonfeld’shusband was taken away to serve in the working unitswith the Hungarian army leaving Mrs. Schonfeld toraise her children on her own during wartime. She andher children were destined to death camps but insteadwere transported to work in Austria. As the warprogressed, the family was later transferred to BergenBelsen and to Terezin, where the Russians liberated thecamp in 1945. She managed to keep all her childrenalive during this horrible time. After the War, the familywas miraculously reunited with her husband. In 1959,she emigrated to Canada. Her family, which includes 9grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren is nowspread over Canada, US and Israel.

Kay CohenMiss Kay Cohen was born in Montreal on April 23,1906, one of six children. She loves to share storiesabout her life. Miss Cohen worked many different jobsin Montreal, Detroit and New York up until she was 70.She remembers the beginning of radio and working inthe first radio store to open in Detroit. Miss Cohen hasnever been married, though she admits that she hasbeen in love and proposed to several times in her 100years. Miss Cohen always had a passion for drawingand painting and still participates in the Arts programat Maimonides, her home since 2002.

Sara AncselMrs. Sara Anscel was born in a little Romanian villageon January 10, 1907. She lived through two World Warsand was a very determined lady. She had an incrediblestrong will for survival throughout her life. After herhusband died in the concentration camps, Mrs. Anscelwas left to raise 4 children on her own. She came toCanada in 1948 to make a better life for her family. Sheworked many different jobs to make ends meetincluding a job in a hat factory and as a cashier in thecafeteria at the Jewish General Hospital. Mrs. Anscel isa grandmother of 11 and great-grandmother of 16. Shehas been a Maimonides resident since 2003.

Elle et ses enfants étaient destinés auxcamps de la mort, mais ils ont été transportés enAutriche pour y travailler. Un peu plus tard, la famillefut déportée à Bergen Belsen et à Terezin, qui futlibérée par l’armée russe en 1945. Mme Schonfeld aréussi à garder ses enfants en vie durant cette horriblepériode. Après la guerre, la famille futmiraculeusement réunie avec M. Schonfield. En 1959,Mme Schonfeld émigra au Canada. Sa famille,comprenant 9 petits enfants et 19 petits-enfants, estaujourd’hui dispersée à travers le Canada, les États-Unis et Israël.

Kay CohenMme Kay Cohen est née à Montréal le 23 avril 1906, dansune famille de six enfants. Mme Kay Cohen affectionnepartager des histoires de sa vie. Elle a occupé diversemplois à Montréal, à Détroit et à New York jusqu’àl’âge de 70 ans. Elle se souvient des débuts de la radioet de son premier emploi dans le premier magasin deradios à Détroit. Mme Cohen ne s’est jamais mariéemême si elle admet avoir été amoureuse et avoir reçuplusieurs demandes en mariage vie. Elle a toujoursaimé le dessin et la peinture et, encore aujourd’hui, elleparticipe au programme des arts de Maimonides, sonchez-soi depuis 2002.

Sara AncselMme Sara Anscel est née dans un petit village deRoumanie le 10 janvier 1907. Elle a survécu aux deuxgrandes guerres, et avait du cran. Toute sa vie, elle a euune incroyable volonté de survivre. Après le décès deson mari dans un camp de concentration, Mme Ansel aélevé seule ses quatre enfants. Elle est venue au Canadaen 1948 pour donner une meilleure vie à sa famille. Ellea travaillé à divers emplois pour joindre les deux bouts,dans une manufacture de chapeaux et commecaissière à la cafétéria de l’Hôpital général juif. Grand-mère de 11 enfants et arrière grand-mère 16 fois, Mme Ansel est venue à Maimonides en 2003 lorsqu’ellene pouvait plus prendre soin d’elle-même.

Tina Shapiro visits her 93 year oldgrandmother Sylvia Gertsman almost everySunday at Maimonides. They often attend themusic program in the synagogue. It’s familytime – an opportunity to just be together andenjoy each other’s company.

When Tina was given the responsibility offinding an organization that would mostbenefit from a generous donation from herfamily, she thought of Maimonides. “It’s aplace that my grandmother calls home andwhere my grandfather spent the last years of his life,” says Shapiro, sitting with hermother Peggy in her grandmother’s 5th floor room adorned with family pictures.

Shapiro wanted the donation to be used for a specific purpose, as opposed tositting in an endowment fund. “I want to know where the money goes, to be able tosee the impact it has now,” she says. Shapiro asked that her family’s donation beused for the Sunday afternoon programming that her grandmother loves so much.As well, she asked that a portion of the donation be designated for the Bursaryprogram, giving staff the opportunity to upgrade their skills. “The staff atMaimonides is incredible. By obtaining a higher education, everyone benefits,including residents like my grandmother.”

Lorsque Tina s’est vu confier la responsabilité de trouver un organisme qui bénéficierait le plusd’un don généreux de sa famille, elle a pensé à Maimonides. « Ma grand-mère se sent à l’aiseici et c’est aussi où mon grand-père a passé ses

dernières années », affirme Tina, en compagnie de sa mère dans la chambre desa grand-mère au 5e étage, entourées de photos de la famille.

Tina voulait que le don soit réservé à une utilisation précise, au lieu de rester dansun fond de dotation. « Je veux voir où va l’argent et l’impact qu’il a maintenant », dit-elle. Tina a demandé que le don serve au programme du dimanche après-miditant affectionné par sa grand-mère. De plus, elle a voulu qu’une partie du don ailleau programme de bourse qui permet au personnel de perfectionner sescompétences. « Les employés de Maimonides sont incroyables. En leur donnantaccès à une meilleure éducation, tout le monde y gagne, y compris ma grand-mère ». Grâce à des dons comme celui de la famille Shapiro, le Centre gériatriqueMaimonides demeure à l’avant-garde des soins gériatriques.
