Ben Davis High School Offensive Coaching Staff

• Mike Kirschner – Head Coach –Offensive Line• Justin Faires – Runnings Back Coach – Special

Teams Coordinator• Chad McCarthy – Offensive Line• Brian Abney – Offensive Line• Mark Bruce – Tight Ends• Brock Vanderbush – Quarterbacks• Kyle Mullins – Wide Receivers• Alex Kirby – Offensive Skill Assistant

Why Inside Zone• It fit our personnel• Gave our Offensive Line a set of rules they

could apply to any front• One scheme that allowed our skill players

the flexibility to display talents• Allowed us to utilize an athletic QB• Staff knowledge of the scheme led to us

installing the scheme

Structure of Offense• Two Back Offense is our origin• 54% of shotgun time was in 2 backs• Wanted a system that could transfer to

a one back look without inventing a new offense

Call System• Two Numbers – Indicates Run or Pass• First Number is the play type • Second Number is the action• Tag – Scheme

• Example: 24 Zone (Give Zone to RB 4 Hole)• Example: 64 Trail (Play Fake Zone run Trail)

Offensive Line Splits

• Splits – Max 2 foot split– Splits will vary based on speed of offensive

line and ability level– More determined by the ability and takeoff of

defensive line

Offensive Line Rules

• Rules– Covered

• You are considered covered if you have a player head up on you to adjacent neighbor playside

– Uncovered• You have a defender that is an inside shade or

second level

Inside Zone – Covered vs. Uncovered

Offensive Line Covered Steps

• First Step – Covered– Aim body to playside number (target)– Defines track

• Second Step– Square to target, maintain base

• Attack Target on 3rd Step

• Do Not Chase Target

Offensive Line Uncovered Steps

• First Step – Uncovered– Lateral Step (Close the gap)– Not an attacking step (account for looper,

blitzers)

• Second Step– Climb vertically to nearest 2nd level LB

• Do not chase

Offensive Line – Inside Zone

• Uncovered becomes covered:– LB shows blitz pre-snap– Defensive Line movement

• Decisions are made based on pre-snap• React to what happens post snap• Don’t over coach this play• Commitment to it makes it successful

Inside Zone – QB

• Read – Read 1st Defender outside the OT post snap– Work opposite the defender

• Keys– Read Key

• 1st Defender outside the OT post snap– Pitch Key

• 1st Defender second level outside of read key

Inside Zone RB

• Pre Snap (Based on alignment)– Identify the Key Down Defender– Identify the Read Key

• Alignment– Heels at 5 – Split Outside Leg of Guard (starting

landmark)

Inside Zone RB

• Read– 1st Down Defender past the ball– Important to watch film throughout the week– Must rep this read during individual time

• Aiming Point– Hip of the first covered offensive lineman– Center with a Zero Nose is considered

covered

Inside Zone RB

• Mesh– RB is responsible for setting the mesh

point with QB– Take belly button to the football– DO NOT TAKE THE BALL!!!!!

• Rules– One cut rule– Bang It, Stick It
