Kim Washburn Salvation Army – Sylvia Fites Family Service Center Name/Contact Information: Sandy Tel: 309-655-7272 Website: www.salvationarmyusa.org Name of House/Location: Salvation Army Sylvia Fites Family Services Center 414 NE Jefferson St. Peoria, IL 61603 The Salvation Army is a worldwide religious and charitable organization, motivated by the love of God and concern for the needs of humanity. The Army's tradition of helping those in need began more than 150 years ago. Members of The Salvation Army serve the poor and needy in over 120 countries. Nationally, they have over 62,000 employees and over 3 million volunteers (Army). Peoria, where I live, serves as the Divisional Headquarters for the Heartland Division. At their downtown Peoria campus, they feature the Sylvia Fites Family Service Center, which houses their transitional housing program. To gather more information, the center was contacted, but they declined an interview, stating confidentiality and security concerns. There is a great lesson in this. Any form of transitional housing or temporary shelter is about more than the structure, its design or its mood and character. It’s about the people who will live there (no matter the length of time), find safety there and hopefully partake in the services that are designed to affect positive change in their lives. As a designer, its important to never loose sight of what’s most relevant: the people who will use and dwell in our creations. Generally speaking, the center accepts homeless mothers and their children and offer programs such as family and career counseling, vocational training, correctional services, and substance abuse rehabilitation. Their services extend to children in the form of child care centers, summer camps, and after school programs (Army).

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Page 17: Inta302 Washburn k w6a1

The overall mood and atmosphere of the center will be warm, bright and invigorating to encourage activity, stimulate ideas, and foster a strong sense of hope for a brighter day. To accomplish this, and in keeping with the existing Federal style of this historic building, vibrant hues of red, blue and green will be used throughout the interior. Textural elements will be introduced through the use of commercial grade fabrics in brocade, tapestry and damask patterns. Period furniture will continue the Federal style details in both the public and private spaces. The contemporary use of bold color will counter balance the traditional architectural details. These details include double-hung, six pane windows, decorative balustrades, crown moldings, elliptical fanlight over entry doors and delicate plasterwork. All of these elements will create synergy in a way that not only honors the integrity and character of the city and building’s history but provide a safe, warm and restorative environment for the residents to renew their spirits.

COLOR PALETTE

Page 19: Inta302 Washburn k w6a1

Color Palette 1

Color Palette 1

Color Palette one has an overall warm feeling. The yellowish brown background enables the red and green complementary colors to stand out. The red window treatments, coffee table and geometric design of the rug display a striking element to room. The space is grounded by dark brown wood tones in the furnishings. The olive green upholstery is soothing to the eye and creates a balance to room.

Page 20: Inta302 Washburn k w6a1

Color Palette 2

Color Palette 2

Color Palette two has a nice mix of warm and cool colors. Although the walls are a warmer gray tone, it gives the room a cooler neutral feeling that exudes and element of sophistication. The gray allows the rust velvet upholstered chairs to add a pleasant focal point to the space. The beige rug grounds room as the light green plants add a soft natural aspect to the space. This palette has an overall neutral feeling.

Page 21: Inta302 Washburn k w6a1

Color Palette 3

Color Palette 3

Color Palette three is vibrant and exciting. It has complementary colors of red and green that add a striking contrast in the rug and paint. The black door in the background breaks up the entry of lime green walls. The light white walls and trim brighten up the space. The light cherry wood in the furnishings compliment the color palette. This entry provides a cheerful expression of design that will be one to talk about.

Page 22: Inta302 Washburn k w6a1

Color Palette 4

Color Palette 4

Color Palette four has an eye catching palette. The colors are split-complementary which provide a contrast of visual interest without the tension of complementary only color palette. The cream walls and ornate trim display a warm contrast to the stained wood doors. The red velvet and blue upholstery chairs provide a strong accent to the natural wood doors and flooring.

Page 23: Inta302 Washburn k w6a1

Color Palette 5

Color Palette 5

Color Palette five has more of cool feeling. The analogous colors are energetic and harmonious. We see these colors in nature as we walk outside. The blue wallpaper resembles the ocean. The crystal chandelier provides a sparkling metaphor to water. The medium toned sea green window treatments blend nicely with the wallpaper and is pleasing to the eye. The dark wood of the dining room table and chairs contrast against the analogous color palette.

Page 24: Inta302 Washburn k w6a1

Final Selection

The final color palette takes into consideration the location of the project in Boston, MA. There are more blue tones added to correlate with the Cape-Cod environment. The deep blue accent wall in the sample image gives a sense of New England and a feeling of patriotism. The warm white trim on the mantle and bookshelves provide a contrast to the room as brown upholstery grounds the space. In the final preparation, the rooms will be enhanced with red wood tones and window treatments adding visual interest to the room. Yellow hues can also be found throughout all the spaces.

JUSTIFICATION

& REFLECTION

Page 68: Inta302 Washburn k w6a1

Justification

Which of these elements and principles (light, color, line, texture, balance, proportion, harmony, etc.) are dominant and subdominant in the design, and how do they support the concept?

The principle of “balance and harmony” are most dominant within the space; using patterns and furniture frames that have “lines” that are reflective of period pieces, rather than authentic reproductions, support the concept by making the spaces approachable and relatable to the facilities’ young clientele. For example, the sofa used in the apartments is much more contemporary than the one used in the gathering space, but yet uses a color palette reminiscent of the Empire period. The more subdominant principles are texture and light for they weren’t used strategically within the spaces to support the design concept.

How does your design reflect the culture and diversity of the client who will occupy the space? How do the furniture, finishes, lighting selections, and custom elements meet the needs of the women and children living in the transitional housing?

Traditional furniture and fixtures were chosen to create a sense of formality and respectability, as well as to pay homage to the architectural style of the home. It’s important that the women and children be comfortable in both the common and private spaces, but with this being transitional housing, it was necessary that the furniture selections not make the spaces look like a dormitory or “flop house”. These women will be challenged to get up every morning and find employment and/or attend school. The environment should inspire them to get up and get moving, not lay around and watch television. Selecting pieces with formal lines and user friending seating, both considerations were able to be met.

Page 69: Inta302 Washburn k w6a1

Justification & Reflection

How did universal design application, code, or egress requirements and environmental design choices influence the decisions you made throughout the design process?

It was quite a challenge to allocate the proper amount of square footage for all of the required common, private and administrative spaces when they all had to be on one level. Egress considerations and code requirements for egress, such as windows in bedrooms and living spaces, made it even more difficult. Universal design, wheelchair accessibility, made carving out enough space for restrooms/bathrooms, hallways and walkways and additional challenging consideration.

REFLECTION

Researching a period architectural structure and gaining first hand knowledge of how the space will be used is paramount for a designer. It’s advisable to spend a lot of time in a similarly used space, if allowable, and even interview those who use and will use the space in order to gain multiple perspectives. Doing a color palette analysis in advance will help you to stay focused when looking through all of the manufacturer’s samples and upholstery books. As will creating a quick “design” board. Floor plans can make or break a design. Bubble diagrams are a quick and effective way to see how spaces will relate to one another. A lot of time must go into creating the floor plan, and having a realistic idea of typical furniture sizes, or typical room square footage, can help to determine whether or not you have allocated enough room for the needs of that space. A team dynamic can be very beneficial on large projects because it allows each contributor to drill down on only one part of the design, rather than one designer trying to understand it all, perfect it all and design it all.
