Introduction of the Report

• A common questionnaires termed as the APIRA Core Question Template.

• Seventeen questions in total:

- Fourteen questions with indicators

- Three questions without indicators

• Help analyze the quantitative growth in the number of Internet users and usage rate as

well as the qualitative growth in Internet usage patterns, and Internet usages in daily

lives.

• Find out the similarities and differences of people’s usage behaviors of and attitudes

towards the Internet among APIRA countries and regions.

• Look at the evolving usage patterns of the Internet users and the reasons of not using

the Internet by those non-users with the longitudinal survey data in the long run.

Although the number of Internet users in Asia is top around the world, the Internet Adoption is

rather low, only larger than that of Africa.

There is plenty of room for Asia Internet development.

The Internet adoption rate of Korea is highest among the four regions.

Overall, the Internet adoption rates keep growing year by year from 2005 to 2012 in the three

regions.

Though the Internet adoption in Chinese Mainland is lowest, the growth is biggest.

Macau gets the highest penetration rate (91.1%) of household computers.

Followed by Taiwan (86.4%) and Korea (82.3%).

The Broadband is the most frequently used connection method in all the regions except Macau. Korea has the highest rate in broadband, which reaches 100%.In Macau and Chinese mainland, the Broadband usage is relatively low and there are many people using other connection methods, such as Wi-Fi and 3G.

The Internet devices become more varied and Desk-top computer is no longer the most used device in most regions.In Chinese Mainland (74.5%), Macau (85.9%) and Korea (99.7%), mobile is the most used device for internet as compared with other devices.

The rate of mobile Internet penetration in the four regions keeps a rapid growth from 2005 to 2012.

In Taiwan, there is a sharp increase of mobile Internet users in 2012 increasing from 33.7% in 2011

to 55.9% in 2012.

The majority of users usually get online at home in all different regions, and also there are more and more people using the Internet in other places. In Taiwan and Korea, there are more than 50% of users getting online in other places, such as airports, train stations and High-speed rail stations.

whose female Internet users are equal to male.

Especially in Malaysia, the male proportion is 56.4%, which is largest in all.

In Chinese Mainland and Malaysia, the largest group of Internet users is those who are 15-24 age, which accounts for 32.1% and 35.5% respectively. In Taiwan, Macau and Korea, the largest age group of the Internet users is 25-34, which accounts for 22.9%, 22.1% and 35.5% respectively.
