Kilimanjaro Marangu Route
ITINERARY... Day 1 Marangu Admire the cloud-covered summit
of the upcoming challenge - Mt Kilimanjaro. Day 2 Mandara Hut
Start the day by getting to know the team of guides and porters.
Set off with a hike through lush rainforest and spot monkeys and
bright birds in the overhead canopy. From the base at Mandara
Hut, enjoy an optional walk to nearby Maundi Crater. Day 3
Horombo Hut Get muscles pumping on a trek to Horombo
Hut. Rainforest gives way to rolling alpine meadow and the path
crosses several ravines before reaching the hut. Spend the night
in the shadow of twin snow-tipped peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi.
Day 4 Kibo Hut Heading higher towards the peak, the landscape
becomes progressively more rugged and rocky and the air begins
to noticeably thin today. Hike through the hauntingly beautiful
moorland forests full of hanging moss and exotic flowers. Skirt
the stark lunar landscape of the Saddle to reach Kibo Hut. Day 5
Uhuru Peak/Summit Close to midnight, wake and enjoy a cup
of tea before zigzagging up a scree slope by torchlight. Arrive at
Gilman’s Point in time to rest tired legs and watch the sun rise
from behind Mawenzi Peak. Continue the final trek upwards and
pass along the rim of a crater to reach the highest point in Africa.
At 5,896 m, the views of the crater, the ice fields and the vast and
distant East African plains below are unforgettable. Days 6-7
Marangu Descend through alpine meadows and lush rainforests
to Marangu and celebrate the end of the trek with a warm, hearty
meal and a well-earned hot shower or relaxing bath.
ITINERARY... Day 1 Marangu Nestled on the lower slopes of
mighty Mt Kilimanjaro, this lively town is a great base to explore the
surrounding area. Set off on an optional cultural walk for an insight
into local Chagga culture or simply relax in town and admire the
cloud-covered summit of tomorrow’s challenge. Day 2 Mandara
Hut Enticing bird calls and glimpses of different monkey species
make this rainforest walk incredibly rewarding. For those after an
extra challenge, why not make the trek to nearby Maundi Crater?
The views from the top are sure to provide plenty of inspiration
for the upcoming journey. Day 3 Horombo Hut Get muscles
pumping on the trek to Horombo Hut and watch as rainforest
gives way to rolling alpine meadows dotted with giant heather
trees. Spend the night overlooked by the twin snow-tipped peaks
of Kibo and Mawenzi. Day 4 Kibo Hut Hike through hauntingly
beautiful moorland forests full of hanging moss, then traverse
the Saddle’s surreal lunar landscape to reach Kibo Hut. Take the
opportunity to rest before setting off on the final ascent. Day 5
Uhuru Peak/Summit At midnight, zigzag up a scree slope by
torchlight to reach Gillman’s Point. Savour the phenomenal sight of
the sun rising majestically behind Mawenzi Peak and watch as the
landscape below is slowly revealed. For those still with energy, it is
a further two hours along the rim of the crater to Uhuru Peak, the
highest point in Africa. From here, there are vistas of the crater, the
ice fields and the vast and distant East African plains below. Day 6
Marangu Descend through alpine meadows and rainforest.

Mt Kilimanjaro TrekkingThe Climb
Just three degrees south of the equator is the 5,896 m/19,340 ft high, permanently snow-capped
Mt Kilimanjaro - Africa’s highest mountain. This stunning peak offers one of the world’s best
opportunities to climb at high altitude without the need of technical climbing ability. Any
normally fit, healthy person prepared to push themselves both physically and mentally should
be able to complete the ascent to the crater rim and then on to Uhuru Peak, the ‘Roof of Africa’.
While the destination remains the same, there are two options to get there:
Marangu Route
This five-day climb is the most popular and direct Mt Kilimanjaro route, and the only one serviced
by mountain huts to offer protection from the elements. Although it can be busy, the route is well
maintained and makes for a breathtaking hike to the summit. Trek through vast grasslands, pass
giant cacti and discover alpine meadows set against a background of mountain peaks. As with all
Kili hikes, prepare yourself for an early-morning, adrenaline-filled final walk to Uhuru Peak.
Machame Route
This six-day climb is the most popular of the camping routes and follows gradually rising paths
through dense forests and moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. From here the trek continues
beneath the glaciated precipices of Kibo’s south face, providing striking views of the southern
icefields. Diverse vegetation lines the pathways, making it one of the most scenic of all the Mt
Kilimanjaro routes. Camp out at night, enjoy the scenery and feel the exhilaration of achievement
while marvelling at the views from the top.
Porters' Policy
On our Mt Kilimanjaro climbs we employ porters to help carry baggage and equipment. We
believe that local people should benefit from our travels, which is why we have a Porters’ Policy
to ensure that working conditions and wages are kept fair. Our full policy, covering loads, wages,
accommodation, clothing and medical care can be viewed at: intrepidtravel.com/porters
• Trek to the peak of Mt Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro Machame Route
ITINERARY... Day 1 Marangu Glimpse the snow-capped peaks
of Mt Kilimanjaro in the distance. Day 2 Machame Camp Begin
with a gentle stroll through rainforest. Day 3 Shira Camp Leave
the rainforest and watch the vegetation grow more sparse as the
path heads towards the Shira Plateau. Day 4 Baranco Camp The
undulating river valley terrain makes for easy acclimatisation on
the trek towards the more rugged areas. Day 5 Barafu Camp
Experience a challenging climb as the path heads up and down
over craggy landscapes. Day 6 Uhuru Peak/Summit Start early,
watch the sunrise at Stella Point and pass by Rebmann Glacier.
Make the final push to the peak and be rewarded with incredible
views. Conquering Africa’s highest mountain is an amazing
achievement. Day 7 Marangu At the base of the mountain, relax
