History in brief

• founded as a commercial trading post by the Dutch in 1624 called New Amsterdam

Ellis Island From 1892 to 1954, over twelve million immigrants entered the United States through the portal of Ellis Island

Empire State Building

• One of the world's tallest building (15th tallest)

• 1945 plane crash - a bomber, piloted in thick fog by Lieutenant Colonel Smith

• under construction and expected to be completed in 2013

• chosen instead of rebuilding the twin towers after their destruction in the September 11, 2001 attacks

Central Park

• in the heart of Manhattan• home to numerous

restaurants, playgrounds,

the Metropolitan Museum, the Central Park Zoo, and Wollman Rink, Belvedere Castle and the historic Carousel

Wall Street Financial District

• the southern end of Manhattan

• It includes Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange as well as other financial institutions.

Times Squareis the site of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop - a time ball made of crystal and electric lights is raised to the top of One Times Square building and then lowered to mark the coming of the New Year.

Rockefeller Center

• is a complex of 19 commercial buildings

• declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987
