    b. (S) Recruitment and Travel: Detaineehad two cousins and a brother who took up armsagainst he Iraqis during the first Gulf War. He claimed they were takenprisonerand neverseenagain. This experience, oupledwith the killing of innocent,defenseless uwaitis,inspired detainee o seekmilitary training. Detaineestated hat it was his duty, basedon theteachingsof Islam, to prepare or the possibility of war. Detaineespoke with Shaykh Salehal-Thakir at the al-Hadia Mosqueregardingmilitary training. Another imam named al-Maliki assistedwith detainee's ravel arrangementso Afghanistan and referred detainee oAbu Muad. In July 200I, detainee raveled rom Dammam o Lahore,Pakistan PK), viaManama, Bahrain (BA). Once n Lahore, detaineecontactedand met two Pakistaniindividuals namedUthman and Amjed. Later that week, Uthman drove detainee o theairport so he could travel on to Quetta,PK. At the Quettaairport an unidentified Afghanpicked him up and escortedhim to his house,and the next day drove the detaineealong withfour other Afghans to the Pakistan-Afghanistan order. The Afghan took everyone'spassports t the bordercrossingand accompanied Pakistanisoldier nto the office. TheAfghan retumed 30 minutes later, and everyonecontinued across he border to Kandahar,AF. Thepassports ere returnedwhile en route o Zubayr al-Haili's guesthousen the HajjiHabashneighborhood cross rom an Islamic Institute. Al-Haili questionedhe detainee tlength, ried to convince the detainee o move to Afghanistan, and requesteddetaineerelinquish his passport,but detainee efused. Detainee raveled o the al-FaruqTrainingCamp he following day.'c. (U) Training and Activities: Detaineeattendedal-FaruqTraining Camp from Julythrough4 September 001. Abd al-Quddus, he al-Faruqcampdirector,addressedhe newlyarrivedstudents.On 15 August 200I, UsamaBin Laden UBL) gavea speech t the camp.Detaineeand sevenothers chosenot to attend his speech o avoid any problemswhen theyretumed to SaudiArabia. While traveling to Kabul, AF, detaineeheard hat NorthernAlliance (NA) leaderAhmad ShahMassoudwas killed.- Detainee ext heardabout he 11September2001 attackson the radio, and heard hat Arabs could not go to Quetta or fear ofbeing arrested. The only way detaineecould leave Afghanistanwas through Khowst andJalalabad,AF. Detaineedecided o head or Jalalabadvia Kabul. Detaineestayed n Kabulwith a childhood riend,Zaid MohammedAbdullah al-Bakir, aka(Abu Assem), orapproximately one month. Then Kabul fell,s the Taliban fled, and the NA forces entered hecity. An individual named Abu Assem made arrangementswith Zebwali, an Afghan guide,to take detainee o Pakistan. The guideand detainee raveled from Kabul to Jalalabadstayingin a guesthouse ntil they moved on to Khojiani, AF. Detainee'sname andphonenumberwere found in the pocket litter of a known al-Qaidaoperative.c.
