DESCRIPTION

‘Tis the season to be jolly! Whether you’re celebrating bonfire night, Christmas, Hanukkah, Saturnalia, Yule, Hogmanay, looking forward to welcoming a new year of possibilities or are just happy to have any excuse for a party we hope your festivities are full of fun with family and friends. The idea of welcoming new life into the world will definitely be marked in the Malpass household as our new arrival is due mid-December. I don’t think any bookmakers are offering quite the odds on whether Luke’s sibling will be a boy or girl, early, on time or late or at what weight that they already are for William and Kate’s April date but it’s certainly keeping us guessing. If you follow us on Twitter or Facebook then why not tell us your predictions there and we’ll be sure to share the news on our website too. Happy holidays!

It’s not the first time Lincoln Inspired festival schools’ patron G LTwynham has made the shortlist but she’s just as thrilled to be included as she was before.

“I’m so excited to have been nominated again for the LYPBA,” says Georgia. “This award is very important to me as it represents all the work I’ve done in Lincolnshire, my connection with the libraries and the readers. In my opinion the best part of this award is the fact that it’s voted for by children. So my fingers are crossed The Awakeningwill win their hearts and the 2015 12 to 14 category.”

Premium placed on sport in primary schoolsThe Primary School Sports

Premium, extra Government funding dedicated to improving

physical education and sport in primary schools, continues

into this academic year and Lincolnshire Sport is planning to

give teachers a detailed overview of how to make the biggest

impact with the money at its firstLincolnshire PE & School Sport

Conference in June 2015.

Headteachers can invest the money in the best way for their school including hiring specialised PE teachers, providing after-school sports clubs and increasing their involvement in sports competitions such as the schools games.“In Lincolnshire we host two multi-sport county festivals as part of the Sainsbury’s School Games,” explains Lincolnshire Sport’s Children and Young People Manager Navaz Sutton.“In 2015 our Winter Festival on March 4th will host six sports and attract approximately 600 athletes and 100 young volunteers from across the county, whilst our Summer Festival on July 8th will host eight sports and attract approximately 700 athletes and 140 young volunteers. Across the two festivals, five of the sportswill be inclusive with approximately 290 disability athletes expected to compete. Schools can qualify for these festivals by taking part in their local Level 2 School Games competitions.“The Primary Sports Premium Funding can be used to increase competitive opportunities in a variety of ways – attending local Level 2 School Games competitions, accessing coaching from an approved provider to deliver extra-curricular activity to support the development of a sporting team in preparation to enter a competition, providing transport to attend School Games competitions, or purchasing any additional equipment required for pupils to take part in activities.”

Doddington HallChristmas at Doddington Hall is magical...Discover the joy in choosing a freshly-cut homegrown tree from the Granary Courtyard – the smell is wonderful - then browse the excellent choice of decorations in the Bauble Barn!

New this year is the Toy Box, located next to the Bauble Barn and offering traditional children’s toys the whole family will love. (You’ll find a 10%discount voucher towards the rear of this issue!)

In this new seasonal shop (it will close on Christmas Eve) visitors will discover a choice of traditional wooden toys and family games. Mums, dads and grandparents will probably see a few which will remind them of their childhoods!

There will be a special children’s competition, which younger visitors can enter when they visit the Toy Box with their grown-ups! One team member at Doddington Hall has chosen a name for their Hibba sit-on dog toy and sealed it up in an envelope as it’s a secret! Doddington doesn’t know what he or she has been named, so perhaps you will help them find out? Childrencan enter to guess what they think the name is; please pop in during opening hours (free to enter). The correct entries will be put into a hat

and drawn a few days before Christmas ... the lucky winner will get a £25 voucher to spend!

The Toy Box will be open daily from Thursday 30 October, 10am to 5pm. From Monday 3 November, open 9am to 5pm. All Sundays 10.30am to 4.30pm, browsing from 10am. Closes on Christmas Eve.

At weekends from 22 & 23 November, the House will be decorated with a theme of Christmas carols; everyone loves the sight of the huge tree and imaginative decorations! Finally, a trip to the Farm Shop for a few seasonal treats makes the visit complete.

Why not plan a perfect family Christmas day out at Doddington?

Enjoy a wild winter....Brrrr! It’s cold outside. We’re lucky and can wrap up warm with cosy coats, hats and gloves. For animals, winter can be tough. Food is in short supply, days are short and the nights are long, dark and extra cold. Small birds like blue tits and robins can spend the whole day just finding enough food to survive.

You can help in your garden by putting out food. You can make your own bird feeder or buy one, but feeding garden birds in winter can make a real difference to their survival. In the coldest weather fat balls are a great source of food and providing foods such as sunflower seeds will ensure your garden is popular with greenfinches and chaffinches as well as blue tits andgreat tits (Remember never feed the birds any food that is salty (e.g. bacon, peanuts, chips), mouldy or alcoholic!). If you put the feeders near a house window you can enjoy birdwatching from the comfort of your house!

But it’s great to get outdoors too. Now the leaves have fallen from the trees, birds are much easier to spot.

Take a walk in the local park, woodland and along hedgerows; if you’re quiet you stand

a good chance of seeing birds as they search for food.

Another great place to look for winter wildlife is at lakes or reservoirs where you could see hundreds of ducks and geese. Our local resident ducks and geese are joined in the winter by birds that live in much colder places like Scandinavia and Russia. A duck isn’t just a duck; there are lots of different species of ducks: the familiar mallard with a bottle green head, black and white tufted ducks, and wigeon with a flash of yellow on the forehead.

There are other birds that you may hear before you see them. Listen for woodpeckers drumming and tawny owls hooting – these two species both begin their courtship displays in winter. Tawny owls are at their noisiest from December and great-spotted woodpeckers begin drumming in January and February. Did you know the “twit-twoo” of tawny owls is actually two birds calling to each other? The female calls “twit” and the male replies “twoo”.

It seems early to be thinking about spring but the birds are already and winter is the ideal time to put up nest boxes in your garden. Blue tits and great tits will begin looking for nest sites in late January and February so get your box up early.

Winter isn’t just good for spotting birds; there are also opportunities for spotting mammals or at least signs of where they have been. Snowfall provides a wonderful opportunity to study animal tracks. Look for the double slot tracks of deer, or the prints of fox or badger.

There are wildlife spotting sheets at www.wildlifewatch.org.uk/spotting-sheets and instructions on how to make bird feeders, nest boxes and lots of other wildlife-friendly activities at www.wildlifewatch.org.uk/activity-sheets

Winter, even without snow, is the best time to find both tracks and trails as with fewer plantsto obscure tracks on the ground and plenty of muddy areas and damp soft ground you will have plenty of opportunity to practise your tracking skills.

Lincoln City FC Academy

Cool sponsor gives team ‘awesome’ lookBuilding confidence,

exploring diverse interests and increasing social

skills are just some of the advantages children gain from taking part in extra

curricular activities and, if it’s a team sport, you can add

in both mental and physical health benefits too – which

is why it’s essential such groups should remain as

accessible to all as possible.

But with variable funding and changing economic conditions such community teams can struggle to guarantee their long term security so forging links with business sponsors can be essential to their ability to continue to welcome new players each season.

As Lincoln City FC Academy Manager Damian Froggatt explains, “The Academy has around 150 registered players from eight to 18 years old and, since our Football League funding ceased following relegation, the Academy needs to find around £60,000 each year to survive and thereforeactively works to develop commercial relationships with local businesses.”

The benefits are, of course, mutual. Business sponsorsforge vital community links, gain publicity and brand awareness and generate goodwill in a way traditional advertising can’t replicate. And, when the sponsor’s core business is in line with the nature of the group, then the benefits for both sides are even clearer – and that perfectrelationship is what the Academy is fortunate to have

recently found with the UK’s leading provider of free school milk in schools, Cool Milk.

“Lincoln City’s Youth Academy is delighted to have secured a partnership with Cool Milk and we thank them for their sponsorship of a match kit for our Under 9 team,” says Damian.

“As part of the two year deal, Cool Milk will be using our youngest academy players in some of its school promotional work, supporting the Healthy Schools programme and raising awareness of the benefits of drinking milk.

Cool Milk’s medical advisor Dr Hilary Jones, who is also a breakfast TV health editor, certainly sees the positive correlation.

“Milk is the nearest thing to complete nutrition in a drink,” says the GP.

“It is a great mental and physical energy booster, it rehydrates after exercise and because it contains so many essential ingredients such as calcium, vitamin B12 and protein, an extra portion of milk is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help build strong teeth and bones as well as vital immunity.”

Based just outside the city of Lincoln, Cool Milk operates and administers school milk schemes in partnership with local authority councils across schools, pre-schools, nurseries and PVIs (Private, Voluntary and Independent settings) and the company’s Managing Director John Sedgwick immediately understood the complementary nature of their goals and those of the children’s football team.

“Cool Milk is committed to helping give young people a great start in life. That means a healthy diet and keeping fit. Our sponsorship of the Imps’ U9s team is a great fit for Cool Milk and Lincoln City FC,” says John.

“The Cool Milk brand appears at football pitches around the county, helping to raise awareness of milk as part of healthy, balanced diet.

“Plus we want to give the club the support it deserves to help it develop and what better way than to support it at its grassroots?”

Of course, the final verdict on the deal should come from theplayers themselves and, on donning the shirt for the first timeearlier this year, nine year old Ewan Dobson said “Our new shirts look awesome and it’s all thanks to Cool Milk.”

On 17th October Bishop King CE Primary School was delighted to welcome author Abi Burlingham. The author of books such as Ruby and Grub and A Mystery for Megan, spent the day working with Keystage 1 children.

Starting the day Abi led collective worship for the whole school; telling the children about her books, and what had inspired her to become an author. She answered questions from the children about her work and what it is like to write stories for a job!

Following this Abi spend an hour with each class. She read one of her stories and showed the children how to make puppy puppets and their very own set of ears like Grub. Abi worked with 6 classes and nearly 180 children!! What a busy day!

A right royal knees up!

This term our topic has been inspired by the children’s storybook

‘The Queen’s Knickers’ by Nicholas Allen.

We have designed and made our own Royal knickers and our parents have been into school to help us build a Royal carriage.

We have also created our own portraits of the Queen. We have found out all about the Royal family and where they live. We have explored what qualities a King or a Queen would require and why.

Finally we ended our topic with dressing up and a banquet. The children came to school dressed as someone Royal. We had princes, princesses, knights and a few kings and queens.

In the afternoon we had a procession and ate lots of food.

The children loved meeting an author, asking questions and listening to stories.

Michael in Year 2 said “ I like making the ears, it was so peaceful we were all being creative!”

On leaving Abi said how much she had enjoyed her day and how well behaved the children had been! Well done Bishop King!

More than just a Museum...If you haven’t already discovered the Museum of Lincolnshire Life,

situated on Burton Road in Lincoln then you will be amazed at what you will find!

The Museum of Lincolnshire Life is the county’s largest social history Museum, offers free admission to all visitors and is a great family day out. Housed in a former Victorian military barracks its collections represent the cultural and working life of the people of Lincolnshire from 1750 to the present day.

In April 2013 work began on a project funded by the Arts Council England (ACE) called Bringing the Barracks to Life. The project involved adding cutting edge, multi-layered digital interpretation to the Museum’s objects, displays and the historic building itself using augmented reality (AR), interactive projections and Personal Digital Assistant hand-held technology (PDA) which we now refer to as i-Guides.

As a result of this new AR digital technology visitors to the Museum are now able to ask a soldier about the conditions inside the Museum’s rare World War One tank; meet a Victorian schoolmaster who speaks of the school’s rules and punishments; challenge their friends to a virtual penny farthing race; help ‘crank start’ Doris, a 1920s Bullnose Morris car and much, much more! Costumed demonstrations, curatorial presentations and new oral history recordings can also be viewed through the i-Guide allowing visitors to access and enjoy so much more of the museum’s collections.

Future of Lincoln Toy Library secured through charity merger

With more than 2,000 toys and play equipment available for hire including items suitable for children with special needs, a soft play area and ball pool for children aged 5 and under and being available for private birthday party hire, the Lincoln Toy Library is a favourite destination for many city parents of preschoolers.

With its existence under strain as an independent charity, the Waterside South venue called an EGM in October to discuss its ongoing governance and the board were delighted to unanimously vote in favour of a proposal to merge with fellow county based young people’s charity Children’s Links.

Coming into effect from the beginning of November, Children’s Links representative Karen Parsons assured the meeting that the merger would be handled so there would be no disruption to the services offered to its members and the public. She also outlined a number of ways that it may be able to expand the library’s offering through outreach services and developing its online and virtual resources.

“We have a good reputation for supporting other initiatives and providing positive outcomes,” Mrs Parsons told the meeting. “Accepting the Toy Library’s proposal was absolutely a no brainer for us and we are very happy and excited to welcome it on board.”

Open Tuesday to Friday from 10.30am to 3pm and on Saturday from 10am to 1pm

Alice’s Adventures in Winter Wonderland is sure to get you in the mood for Christmas – Just don’t be late!

Alice’s Adventures in Winter Wonderland is a familiar tale with a wintery twist; it’s Christmas Eve and a very curious Alice tumbles into a strange world caught in the clutches of the cruel Jack Frost. With the help of her newfound friends, including the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat, Alice embarks on a madcap adventure full of talking animals, magical potions and tea parties in order to find the white rabbit, defeat Jack Frost andget back home in time for Christmas!

The Lincoln Company’s masterful retelling of Lewis Carroll’s famous children’s story is a seasonal treat for all the family, appealing to both boys and girls, recommended for ages six and over.

“We made the decision that this year’s Christmas Show was going to be based on Alice in Wonderland even before we had finished last year’s show, The Lion, The Witchand the Wardrobe. That show was a huge success, so we have a lot to live up to this year, and as such, the stakes are really high!

One of the reasons we decided to write a home-grown show this year was to make

the most of the tremendous talent we have in-house in design, puppetry, video work and music. Anyone who saw last year’s show will know that we really invested in the production, so it is great to be able to write a show ourselves into which we can weave as much technical wizardry, fantastic frocks and rousing music as possible.” said Dominic Symonds, Director.

Lincoln Performing Arts Centre is a vibrant and inspiring place for children to visit and experience theatre. The theatre has become well established in the city as a great place for families to take children of all ages, especially at Christmas time.

“We’ll be turning the space into an in-the-round theatre, which adds to the intimacy of the performance and places you right at the heart of the action. Without giving too much away, we’ll be using the whole theatre for the performance, and I mean the whole space, right the way up to the ceiling!” said Craig Morrow, Producer.

Following on from the success of last year’s The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, which played to a sell-out crowd, many families and schools have already booked their trip to the theatre for this year’s Christmas production of Alice’s Adventures in Winter Wonderland. Tickets are selling fast; to book your visit to the theatre this Christmas, phone the box office on 01522 837600 or visitwww.lpac.co.uk.

You’re in for a treat at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre this Christmas! This year’s big family Christmas show is Alice’s Adventures in Winter Wonderland, showing from Friday 12th to Wednesday 24th December 2014.

Christmas Survival

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, well, it is if you listen to the lyrics of Andy

Williams’ twee festive tune. But it’s also a very busy, stressful and expensive

season. Here, writer and mum-of-two Sam offers her tips on surviving Christmas.

I’m a reluctant fan of Christmas. I’m not a full-on Scrooge, I don’t sulk and mutter ‘bah humbug’, I more tend to get swept along by all the joviality, activity, bustle and glitter that goes with it, helped by the occasional glass of sherry.

I’m actually happier spending a day at Eden Hall Day Spa, if I’m honest.

However, there’s no escaping it.

Over the years, I have mastered a few tricks to help the season of goodwill flow as smoothly as possible.

Shopping

Let the Internet do the legwork. For the past few Christmases I have kept my postie busy with an endless stream of deliveries from various online emporiums. It’s not just the big shops either. Many local shops offer a click and collect service if you want to secure something a bit special.

Cards

Don’t send vile animated emails, or links to an Elf-a-gram created online. Keep the tradition alive. Buy a box of charity cards next time you are doing your supermarket shop and set aside a night to write them. Everyone loves to receive a card through the post, it takes the edge off a bit after they’ve open their fuel bill.

Entertaining

Throw a festive breakfast bash a couple of days before the big event. A friend did this last year and her house was full of kids and their parents wolfing bacon buttiesand sizzling sausages. There may even have been a shot of Baileys in the grown ups’ coffees. We were out of her hair by 11.30am. It was pure genius. I recommend it to those who still want to mingle but have limited opportunities to throw dinner parties, what with children asleep (fingers crossed)in bed in the evening.

Children

Ditch the advent calendar. Don’t go there. Trust me.

It is much better to spring Christmas on your children on Christmas Day morning, rather than allow them to build to a fever pitch of excitement by crossing each day off.

The School Nativity or play

Charge your phone or camera the night before and pack a handkerchief. Despite having rehearsed every line, song and dance with your child since the middle of November, when you see them perform on stage, you will be overcome with pride and emotion, as if seeing it for the first time.

Families

This is by far the trickiest area to negotiate. If the festive season puts undue stress on a family gathering, don’t force it. Book a 10-day holiday to Benidorm leaving on December 23 and arrange to see everyone when you return. Or at Easter, whichever comes soonest.

The Diet

Forget it. That’s what January is for.

The Tree

Fake or real, if your child makes an ornament and it clashes with your exquisite display, hang it up regardless. They were thinking of you when they made that odd-looking pine cone reindeer.

The Other Half

I have just one piece of advice. Listen to each other. The next few weeks are all about paying attention to hints. If your partner says, “Oh, I’d love that … (fill in the gap) but it’s soextravagant,” what they are actually saying is, “I want it, I want it, I want it. GET IT FOR ME (please).”

Managing expectations

The key to surviving Christmas, is to lower your expectations. You will not then be disappointed by dessicated turkey, receiving another pair of socks, or, despite a promise you made to yourself on Christmas Day morning, falling asleep by 4pm and missing the TV specials you had highlighted in the Radio Times.

Don’t worry. There’s always next year, no, really, next Christmas will soon be here… Start preparing now.

Inspiring girls to breakthrough into scienceThere are many famous female scientists that have made a huge impact in their own fields throughout history but encouraging girls to followin the footsteps of women such as Marie Curie, Jane Goodall and Rosalind Franklin remains an area that many educators wish to tackle.

And the University of Lincoln’s Newton Academy, a science club for girls, is a new group specifically aimed at doing just that.

Its first intake of 10-11 year olds will be takenthrough a three-year scheme involving 12 Saturday morning science and technology-themed workshops designed to inspire and enthuse the next generation of female scientists and engineers.

Created as part of the University’s Athena SWAN project, which acknowledges its commitment to advancing the representation of women in science, engineering & technology, the group has already been introduced to computer science and robotics and taken part in a Spud Science Day covering potato batteries and electronic noses for detecting potato diseases. A Chemistry Christmas Cracker is planned for December.

“The Academy has been developed to encourage girls of secondary school age to consider post-16 study in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects and to pursue science and technology careers. But most of all it’s about showing them that science can be fun!” says Belinda Colston, Professor of Analytical Chemistry in the School of Chemistry.

“The girls will enrol at age 11 and stay with us until age 14. They will take part in projects that develop their confidence in, and enthusiasm forSTEM, as well as essential problem-solving and critical thinking skills.”

Lincoln University Technical College and the region’s science and technology-based industries will also be involved in the Academy.

The joys of Christmas presentWhatever else you may think about Christmas, the one thing we all share is the hype that surrounds the event.

Unless you live in a cave with no communications, it is very hard to miss the increasing cacophony that terminates in

an orgy of present giving and holiday adverts.

It never ceases to amaze me how organised some people are and, say it as I must, it is usually the ladies. As for me, present giving ranks among the most stressful experiences. Why? It’s not that I mind spending the money (well, OK a bit), but it’s probably more the fear of getting it wrong. But for heaven’s sake, why should anyone not be pleased to be the recipient of even a poorly thought out, inexpensive, inappropriate, reluctantly given, unnecessary, space consuming, tasteless (to them), gift.

And of course, that’s the point. Getting all that, or even some of it, right, is hard. Trying to avoid the pitfalls by asking people what they want also has a downside, just one being stung for some expensive, much longed for artefact. Get out of that. Asking is an admission of defeat, laziness, lack of care and interest. You can’t win.

I am not claiming that Ruddocks (sorry, had to slip this in somehow) will solve all these problems (challenges?), but maybe, just maybe, our toys and gifts are worth a look. We certainly try to find interesting and worthwhileitems. Only you (or perhaps those to whom you give) will be the judge.

Notwithstanding all that, I hope that at least some glimmer of the true meaning of Christmas will manage to permeate the turmoil of preparation and consequent exhaustion. It really is something worth celebrating.

A mini warehouse full of treasuresMasons Attic is a small family business based in Grantham, Lincolnshire. When we first started this business from home, our aim in mind was to have something for the whole family, with the eventual dream of opening a shop which we are proud to say that we achieved in October this year, a huge step for us.

Our shop is open every weekend, Saturdays 10am-4pm and Sundays 10am-2pm. We will aim to open more once our presence becomes established as we are not located on the High Street, weekdays are by appointment only.

We have a website which lists all our products and includes; Thomas the Tank Engine, Big Farm Toys, Bracelet making, crafts and fairies for the children. Crafting embellishments, card blanks, ribbon, stamps, Hunkydory, Crafters Companion, Laser cut shapes and crafting tools for the crafters. Model Toys for the collector including Farm Models, which are extremely popular with our Farming customers, along with a small selection of Home decor items.

Masons Attic

Bespoke orders are very welcome, if you want something in particular for your crafting or model making then just ask.

Our very special laser engraving section offers personalised Christmas decorations which are very popular, our main requests are having children’s names engraved on the tree decorations and door hangers. We also offer the ability to engrave your photo onto wood for that unusual and unique gift.

It’s really lovely when a family comes into our shop, the instant they walk in the door; the man usually disappears to the Toys & Models sections whilst the lady turns to the crafts and home decor and the children just stare in awe, not knowing what to look at first.

A warm welcome is given to everyone and we go out of our way to assist with anything our customers need. We regularly do competitions and giveaways on Facebook as we know every little helps and of course as we are a small business, we want to grow, so our loyal customers often help us on Facebook to do just that which we really appreciate.

Let relaxation take over....Once my journey with therapies commenced, my interest grew and grew. The more I researched and studied, the more my love for therapies increased. That ‘feel good’ factor is so often neglected and I wanted to help more people take control of their own wellbeing.

Pure Escape

I offer numerous therapies, including various forms of massage – (Swedish, Deep Tissue, Myofascial Release, Trigger Point Therapy and Pregnancy Massage), Hot Stone Massage, Thai Foot Massage, Indian Head Massage, Ear Candles, Holistic Facial’s, Body Brushing (ideal pre massage), and the wonderful Reiki Healing (a treatment I truly love and which never fails to astound me).

I love natural and beneficial products, and all theoils and products used at Pure Escape are chosen wisely and ethically for their quality, specificingredients, and their therapeutic actions on the body and senses. Organic and chemical free products are used wherever possible, including specifically, Neal’s Yard Organics, which I alsoadvise on and sell.

Whether you come with pain, aches, stress, headaches, insomnia, or anything else, a treatment can be made bespoke to your needs, and can be a combination of various therapies in one treatment, to ensure you receive the best results possible. Although I do have a treatment menu, from which, people can choose a specific treatment, in manycases I treat people for the time they book with me, and use whichever therapies that person needs. Many of my clients now devise their own treatment packages incorporating Thai Foot Massage with a back massage, for example, to treat the whole body and provide a real sense of tranquillity. My most popular treatment combination at the moment is massage combined with Reiki. After discussing what a client wishes to gain from the treatment, we

work out the plan together, to suit the time and budget available.

My clients range from mum’s & mum’s to be, stressed executives, runners, gymnasts, horse riders, people with some ill health conditions, people with confidence issues, thosewho just wish to relax and take a bit of ‘me time’, men, women and children.

I work in the peaceful village of Glentworth, just north of Lincoln. Glentworth is easy to get to and parking is plentiful, ensuring that your whole experience from arrival to departure is relaxed and stress free.

I do hope to meet you soon! Sadie

Local parent cook’s up a way to get kids learning! What do you get if you take a group of children, a kitchen & a whole lot of food? The answer you may think would be a mess but with local mum Laura Northage in charge the reality is the ingredients for a promising & already thriving business. Laura was keen to find an activity for her own children basedaround food and cooking, and unable to find what she waslooking for was inspired to set up a brand new business that’s already thriving across the UK. We’ve won a Netmums award for our pre-school CookieTots classes as well as Theo Paphitis’s SBS (Small Business Sunday) award on Twitter. The Kiddy Cook brand continues to go from strength to strength.

Kiddy Cook provides unique cooking sessions exclusively designed for children aged 4 – 11 years to encourage them to learn about ‘good’ food and to explore new flavours in aneducational and fun way.

Kiddy Cook kids soon get the hang of beating, whisking, folding and creaming but there’s more to them than chocolate cake! Children who cook in the Kiddy Cook kitchen don’t just get to make a cake – they get to conduct a ‘volcano’ experiment to learn how carbon dioxide works to make their cakes and biscuits rise. They learn the difference between taste and flavourand think about the effect sound has on their ability to eat – try eating a banana with someone scrunching a packet of crisps in your ear!

And not forgetting those of you with younger children, CookieTots is a group activity for toddlers aged 2-4 years. Parents and carers help their children to create easy-to-make recipes and then join in with music, games and activities based around preparing and enjoying food.

These great classes promote healthy eating and food awareness whilst building confidence and encouraging independence.Different recipes give the children a chance to explore their senses and express their creativity and they get to take home what they’ve made.

“If we encourage our children to help out in the kitchen they’re more likely to try the results” says Laura “and if we can encourage our children to try ‘good’ healthy food then we can change the way they eat for life as well as giving them skills they can use again and again.”

“I am now also looking for Class Leaders to run After School Clubs for me. If you’re interested in becoming a Class Leader please contact me on 07947 675113 or email: [email protected].”
