Welcome to the 3rd Issue of the Reading Kit. Here, I would like to thank you for your generous support. The team loved reading feedback on how you enjoyed the content and activities in the previous two issues, and how the nostalgia section evoked memories. These comments keep us passionate about the work that we do to produce the Kits, so do keep them coming!

Some of you have asked why we produce one booklet with all four languages instead of one for each. The reason is that producing one booklet helps us keep the cost lower, so that we can produce more for a bigger audience. Nonetheless we will reconsider this for next year.

We have also heard your requests for certain topics and will try our best to incorporate them into future issues.

In this issue, we’ll talk about the importance of will writing, and also have a guest article from Dr. Christopher Goh on knee pain and osteoarthritis. Included in this kit are: a massager to soothe those stiff muscles, a snake rubik for some mental exercise, and a pen and self-stick note pad set that we hope you’ll enjoy.

Is there A Need to Write A Will?

Many people shy away from the idea of writing a will, considering it a taboo subject that should be avoided for as long as possible. But do you know that drawing up a will is ultimately for the benefit of your family and loved ones?

Without clear instructions on how your estate should be divided, your assets could be unfairly distributed or even forfeited under Singapore’s Intestate Succession Act. Lacking a will, transference of wealth may also take years, which may lead to the depreciation of certain assets in the meantime.

Here are some other facts you may not know about: • You can draw a will without a lawyer’s aid.• You can update or rewrite your will if you wish. • You can specify your preferred funeral arrangements

in your will. • A will does not have to be registered with the Will Registry to

be considered legally valid. • A will is considered invalid if the will-maker cannot be certified

as having a clear state of mind at the time of execution. • Your CPF monies are not covered under your will, although

investments under the CPF Investment Scheme are.

What are the causes for knee pain?The causes for knee pain can be divided into a few categories. These are divided into traumatic causes (ie injuries to ligaments, cartilages, muscles), inflammatory causes such as rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, and degenerative causes such as osteoarthritis (wear and tear of the cartilage).

What is osteoarthritis of the knee?Osteoarthritis is the most common cause for knee pains in people older than 60 years of age. It is defined by the degeneration and thinning of the cartilage in the knee joint. However, the disease also involves bone edema and bone pain, joint laxity or tightness of ligaments as well as weakness of the adjoining muscles of the knee.

What are the signs and symptoms of knee osteoarthritis?Symptoms of knee osteoarthritis are pain on walking or climbing, stiffness in the knees especially after prolonged sitting and swelling in the knee joints. The patient also complains of functional impairment such as weakness and instability in the knees.

How is it diagnosed?The diagnosis of osteoarthritis is often made through x-rays of the knee which will show the classical signs of a thinned out cartilage, a mal-aligned joint, bony spurs and signs of osteoporosis in the bones due to limb disuse.

What are the treatment options?Pain management can involve a variety of treatment methods including the use of anti-inflammatory medications. Other methods may involve injections to inflamed bursas and tendons as well as

Functional management involves improving the instability and reducing the pressure on the knee joints. This can be accomplished with the use of an Unloader knee brace. This specific form of knee bracing stabilizes the affected knee and helps to reduce pressure on the knee joint.

Physiotherapy and tailored rehabilitation exercises to strengthen the thigh and calf muscles of the knee are also useful in improving the function of the affected leg.

Nowadays, we have more food options than ever. But with variety comes the problem of not knowing what types of food we should be eating. You may have heard of whole foods being promoted as a form of healthy eating. This movement is about going back to our roots, choosing to eat foodstuff that is unprocessed and unrefined.

Examples of whole foods include whole grains, leafy vegetables and non-homogenised dairy products. One reason for eating whole foods is to acknowledge that unprocessed food have the right amounts and types of nutrients required for healthy living. Eating processed foods like refined sugar, potato chips and margarine deprive our bodies of the benefits natural chemistry brings about.

Mengurus Harta Pusaka

Pengurusan harta pusaka merupakan amanah yang mesti dilaksanakan dengan penuh kebijaksanaan. Dalam konteks Singapura, isu harta pusaka meliputi wang Tabung Simpanan Pekerja (CPF), pemilikan bersama rumah (joint tenancy), selain daripada wang simpanan dan lain-lain jenis harta yang dimiliki.

Siapakah waris atau yang berhak atas harta si mati?Waris ialah orang yang mempunyai hubungan nasab dengan si mati atau hubungan lainnya yang membolehkan beliau mendapat hak memiliki harta warisan mengikut bahagian yang telah ditetapkan hukum faraid.

Bolehkah saya membuat pembahagian semasa hidup?Seseorang boleh merancang warisan pusaka dengan membuat wasiat, nuzriah atau hibah untuk memastikan kemaslahatan ahli waris menyusuli kematiannya. 遗嘱？有必要吗？

大多数人对这个课题一般都避而不谈，认为这是不吉利的事情，并对订立遗嘱有不少的误解。

误解1：有钱人才需要遗嘱，其他人不需要。其实，遗嘱不是有钱人的专利。预立一份遗嘱能让立遗嘱人决定如何分配遗留下来的资产, 尊重其合法权益跟正当意愿，避免将来资产的分配有欠公平 。 最重要的是能避免家人亲友为争夺遗产或遗物而对簿公堂，造成无法弥补的伤害。 误解2：订立遗嘱很贵，需要律师撰写和保管。实际上，立遗嘱人可以在没有律师的协助下拟定一份遗嘱。遗嘱无需注册仍是合法有效的。为了方便找到，遗嘱可以放置在安全且容易让人发现的地方。

保险起见，立遗嘱人也能在新加坡设的遗嘱登记处注册遗嘱。

误解3：遗嘱的内容只涵盖值钱的财产，如存款、 股票和房产等。遗嘱的功能除了分配财产，也能交代遗愿。例如具纪念价值的个人物品如何处理，葬礼仪式的安排等。须注意的是，遗嘱的资产虽包括公积金投资计划下的投资，但不涵盖公积金存款。

误解4：遗嘱只能在年老或临终前订立。事实上，凡满21岁有民事行为能力的成年人就能订立遗嘱。

误解5：没有订立遗嘱，遗产会被充公。 根据《无遗嘱继承法》，一般在处理完债务后，配偶和孩子会各继承一半的遗产。只是，在这种没有遗嘱的情况下，遗产转移手续可能被拖延长达数年之久。股票资产等也许会因而贬值。

因此，每个人都应该正视遗嘱这个课题，依据自己的意愿预先订立合适的遗嘱，为资产拟定处理方式以及分配方式，给予家人和亲友一份保障。

膝痛的成因是什么？膝痛的成因可以分为好几类，即外部损伤性因素（如韧带、软骨、肌肉等损伤）、炎症性因素（如类风湿关节炎、痛风性关节炎），以及退化性因素如骨关节炎（软骨磨损和撕裂）。

膝盖骨关节炎是什么？在60岁及以上的人群中，骨关节炎是造成膝痛的最普遍因素。这是由于膝关节部位的软骨退化或变薄所导致的。然而，这类病痛往往也涉及骨性水肿和骨痛、关节松弛或韧带紧绷，以及膝盖附近肌肉群的无力症状。

膝盖骨关节炎的迹象和症状有哪些？ 膝盖骨关节炎的症状包括走路 或攀爬时会感到疼痛、膝盖僵硬 （尤其是长时间坐着之后）以及膝关节肿痛。患者也会抱怨膝盖功能产生障碍，如膝盖无力和不稳定。

如何诊断骨关节炎？一般通过照X光片来诊断骨关节炎。X光片会显示典型的软骨薄弱症状、膝关节畸形、骨刺以及肢体缺乏活动造成骨头部位的骨质疏松迹象。

有哪些治疗方法？减轻疼痛的治疗有几种，比如使用消炎药。其它疗法也包括在发炎的粘液囊和肌腱进行注射，以及关节内注射玻尿酸来润滑关节。这些通常都是短期性的应对措施，目前该状况仍未有长期的治疗措施。
