In chilly, but fine, conditions last Saturday, a large number of visitors and guests gathered at the new Darfield St John Ambulance station to celebrate its welcome completion and opening. The original St John Ambulance station, on the corner of Currie Street and North Terrace, Darfield, was badly damaged in the September earthquake and since then ambulance crews and St John Youth Cadets have operated from a number of other buildings in the township. The new ambulance station, which will be fully operational from the end of September, is the first building built by St John to replace a building destroyed in the 2010-2011 earthquakes. A dedicated team has spent the last five years designing and organising the new building with all costs being met from existing

funds and new, generous donations. “St John in Darfield feels truly blessed to have amazing c o mm u n i t y s u p p o r t , ” commented Ian HendersonIan HendersonIan HendersonIan Henderson, St John Communications Advisor, South Island Region. Special guests at the opening included Peter BradleyPeter BradleyPeter BradleyPeter Bradley, CEO of St John New Zealand, and Selwyn MP the Hon Amy Adams.Amy Adams.Amy Adams.Amy Adams. The Darfield ambulance covers the area from Arthur’s Pass in the west to West Melton in the east and from Oxford, north of the Waimakariri River south to the Rakaia River. This area covers over 5,000 square kilometres and 13,000 people. The ambulance staff of 24 are all volunteers and in the last year responded to 586 calls, covering 45,000 kilometres and 2,700 man hours.

Hannah Perkins, Jaimee Leigh Millar, Savannah Sayer and Libby Gameson provide front-of-house customer

service at the Hororata Village Bar and Café.

Today, Friday September 11th, marks the fourth birthday of Jarnia Jarnia Jarnia Jarnia and Jason Kupe’s Jason Kupe’s Jason Kupe’s Jason Kupe’s ownership of the Hororata Village Bar and Café (HVBC). “Buying a café in the centre of earthquake land in 2011 would not seem a good idea to most,” laughed Jarnia, “but we saw potential and a community that needed hope and love put back into it.” Since then the couple have made the Café Hororata's main Hub and meeting place. "It’s certainly been a tough road, but a huge thank you to our customers and staff who have helped us keep our chins up and keep trying. The past year has certainly been the

making of Hororata with the imp l emen t a t ion o f t he Canterbury P lains Water irrigation system and the support from employees and companies involved with the canal, has made such a difference to rural business. We thank the Fulton Hogan John Hol land Venture, Taylors Contracting Limite, Aquaduct, Downers and CPW for all the business they have done through the Cafe. We also thank our wonderful S t a f f , b o th p a s t an d present. Country people are just so wonderful,” Jarnia s t r e s s ed , “ t h e y m a k e personable, friendly workers

and most of our staff have been local teenagers who have grown with the business!” Good coffee in a café is a must and Icoco, the much enjoyed brand of coffee used at HVBC, was awarded a Gold and best in New Zealand 2014. “The Butcher’s Pie, made onsite at the Café, has gone from 200 pies a week to 1,000 pies a week,” Jarnia said. "We always promised ourselves to keep life interesting, and through events, great food and hospitality, we’ve certainly managed that, making the Hororata Village Bar and Café well worth a visit,” she finished.

ACROSS THE STREET ACROSS THE WORLD

THE BEST MOVES ARE MADE WITH GRACE

Dianthe Rose Barnard had her feet firmly on the ground when she started Darfield Primary School this week. The sun was shining and all was still, a stark contrast to the day of her birth five years

ago. Dianthe was born on September 4, 2010 during the 7.1 magnitude Greendale fault earthquake (with its epicentre near Darfield) which hit Christchurch. This gained her the title of ‘miracle baby’, as the news of her safe birth was a silver lining after the chaos that followed this first seismic event. Parents Maruschke and Evert welcomed Dianthe into the world at 4.41am, on a swaying hospital

bed; just six minutes after the shaking began. Originally from South Africa, the Barnard family moved to Darfield after the fatal earthquake of February 22, 2011. Dianthe is described as being very

excited about attending Darfield Primary school and is looking forward to learning lots of new things.

There was a fantastic turn out at the Greendale Shake Up last Friday, with around ninety people braving cold conditions to attend. The event was opened by Deputy Mayor, Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah WaltersWaltersWaltersWalters before those present came together to remember the events of five years ago. The aim of the event was to recreate the 7.1 earthquake of 2010 by simulating some of the destruction and sounds that occurred, as a consequence of the tumultuous upheaval on the Greendale fault, five years ago. The display of destruction was preceded by Ian Warren Ian Warren Ian Warren Ian Warren sounding a whistle at 4.35pm to commemorate the time that the 2010 earthquake started (using pm instead of am to better suit). The piano smashing was organised carefully by Cheryl RidgenCheryl RidgenCheryl RidgenCheryl Ridgen, with a strong focus on safety and with protective apparatus supplied by Taege’s Engineering, to ensure everyone’s well-being. The pianos being smashed were symbolic of the destruction caused to material possessions, and the sounds that echoed loudly during the earthquake. The 140th Courtenay A & P Show will be held on Saturday November 21st, and entries are now open. Schedules have been sent to last year's entrants, and are also available from the Kirwee Challenge, Darfield Library, Darfield PGG Wrightson and Dar f ield Farmlands. The theme for the Courtenay Show this year is 'Lifestyle Block and Boutique Businesses'. Show President Adrienne Begg Adrienne Begg Adrienne Begg Adrienne Begg is keen to promote small producers, cottage industries, and those with small holdings, to show what is being achieved locally. Interested people are invited to contact the Secretary if they would like to be involved in this. The Courtenay A & P committee advise that the Horse section has been altered slightly for the f o r t h c om i n g S h ow t o

accommodate the new RAS Horse of the Year guidelines. Sections which qualify are clearly marked in the schedule. In addition, after the success of last year's highly entertaining Stock and Station Horses section, another new section has been included, also for horses, the Pinto and Gypsy Cobs. These are beautiful horses and definitely not to be missed. Another exciting event this year will be the awarding of the Royal Agricultural Medal of Excellence to the person who achieves the most points in the Produce Shed, where points are gained in at least three Sections. Anyone who is a knitter, sewer, baker, grower, photographer or just plain crafty, should get cracking on their entries now to be in to win this highly sought after medal.

Finally, to celebrate their 140th Show, and to support local emerging design talent, the Association has launched a new competition. Locals aged eighteen or under are invited to design the front cover of this year's Show Catalogue. The prize is a great day out at the Show, including free gate passes, ten free amusement rides, plus a $20 kebab voucher

and twenty ice cream vouchers to be used on the

day. Details of the competition are on the website -

To the Editors: I wish to support Mr Baldwin’s letter of July 31st and take issue with Mr Christenson regarding his stupid excuse that no ‘local’ meeting rooms in the Darfield area were available for a hearing of the granting of a licence to open ‘Thirsty Liquor’ store in Darfield. Depending on the size wanted, the Council owns two or three meeting rooms at their building, there are three downstairs and one upstairs in the locally built and run Recreation

Centre, plus at least three sports clubs and three churches, who let out rooms for meetings. We pay you Mr Christenson and expect better knowledge and information than that.

Leith Creamer, Darfield

To the Editors: I am amazed there was no response in last week’s Malvern News to John Christensen's reply to Philip Baldwin's letter about the lack of a local hearing related to a liquor license being granted for Darfield township. Mr. Christensen claimed 'a suitable venue was not available'. The question has to be asked, 'How hard did the Council try to find a meeting place in Darfield for a local hearing?' Trinity Church, the Baptist Church, the Roman Catholic Church and Darfield Life Church all have large buildings, some of which are free on several days each week. The Selwyn Library also has rooms available for meetings and the Rec Centre must have space. Are we seriously expected to believe that all these organisations were asked for the use of their building and none were available??? Is it just possible that by making it difficult for people to attend a hearing there was a better chance of the license being granted without too much opposition? The

fact there was a hearing at all was not generally known. It seems the health and safety of the residents in our community is of less importance to the Council than the opportunity to sell even more liquor in our township. It is an unfortunate situation and does not bode well for our township's future.

Coral Bramley, Darfield

(The letter from Leith Creamer was intended by the writer for inclusion in last week’s issue - but arrived just a tad too late for publication - Editors) To the Editors: The Darfield branch Red Cross New Zealand organise the delivery of ‘Meals on Wheels’ in Malvern, collect for the annual appeal, and Rose Day, forward clothing to the Red Cross Ship in Christchurch and send in a good donation from each meeting to the General Fund. We meet on the third Monday bimonthly at the Baptist Church Foyer with Creed and prayer and brief business meeting, Speaker and lots of good fellowship over afternoon tea. You are cordially invited to come and join our enthusiastic ladies and show your support of the future of Red Cross in our area and beyond.

NICK & YOLANDE HOWELL - YOUR LOCAL VETS IN ROLLESTON Hours: Monday to Friday 8am - 6pm, Saturday 9am - 1pm

On September 2nd, BNZ staff came out to support the local community with their time and skills. Working bees were held at Dar f ield Pre-school and Nursery, as well as Halkett Community Centre. Ross HayesRoss HayesRoss HayesRoss Hayes, chairman of the Halkett Community Centre explained, “it has gone from looking ordinary to very smart.” The BNZ team painted the building, as well as cleaning the spouting and reviving the gardens. Ross and the committee are extremely grateful for the help. “It is wonderful for an organisation like us to have this support and we really appreciate it.” BNZ's Closed for Good initiative

is New Zealand’s biggest day of corporate volunteering and since 2009, BNZ staff have donated almost 130,000 hours of their time through Closed for Good to give back to the community. All BNZ stores were Closed for Good, and more than 3,000 staff got stuck in, helping more than 500 regional organisations around the country. Community groups and not-for-profits in Canterbury put up their hands to take advantage of the support, with seven projects in all, being run by BNZ volunteers. Darfield Preschool and Nursery had five BNZ staff on site to offer their skills. The helpers were put to work in the car park

- planting, tidying and edging. They also added the finishing touches to the new bike track by completing the planting and adding a tyre wall, “The children are very excited now it is able to be used,” Clare Clatworthy Clare Clatworthy Clare Clatworthy Clare Clatworthy of Darfield Preschool and Nursery commented. “It is great for us to know that we will get this help and support from BNZ every year. It enables us to finish our big projects a lot quicker than we would otherwise.” BNZ CEO Anthony Healy Anthony Healy Anthony Healy Anthony Healy said, “Closed for Good will always be about a good old fashioned working bee, but we’re delighted that we’re increasingly helping with things like marketing plans, and scam savvy or budgeting workshops.” Being closed for a day did not disadvantage BNZ customers; support staff were still working for urgent and time critical services, and call centre staff were also available on the day.

Dave Armstrong, Cam Blain and Jim Pain were working on the Darfield Preschool bike track as part of BNZ's Closed for Good

community volunteering day.

The BNZ team had a sense of satisfaction after their working bee at Halkett Community Centre as part of BNZ's Closed for Good . L-R: Melanie Brooks, Claire Ede, Sarah Black and Brenda Armstong.

The idea to form Team Mobico Heart Kids and compete in GodZone was conceived two years ago after West Melton t e a m c a p t a i n R u p e r t R u p e r t R u p e r t R u p e r t MacLachlan’s MacLachlan’s MacLachlan’s MacLachlan’s son, MitchellMitchellMitchellMitchell, was diagnosed with a hole in his heart at six weeks old. Mitch underwent open heart surgery at Starship hospital when he was just eighteen months old. Without the incredible help and support from everyone involved at Heart Kids Canterbury and Heart Kids NZ, coping with this stressful time in their lives would have been a lot different for the MacLachlan family. Every week, twelve babies are born with a heart defect in New Zealand and while there are surgical procedures that can improve the heart's function, there is no cure for a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). Heart Kids NZ is the only charity that supports Kiwi children and families affected by CHD, right throughout their lives. Rupert found this support invaluable, “They went beyond and above, right from the moment they found out about Mitchell's heart defect, through to now, six months post-surgery.” Heart Kids NZ receives no government funding and has to fundraise for all its services. Mobico, a New Zealand owned specialist IT company, is proud

to get in behind it and the four wonderful people, plus their families, who are taking on this adventure to raise awareness and much needed funds for Heart Kids NZ. Mobico is sponsoring a team to participate in the April 2016 GodZone, the World’s most t e c hn i c a l l y ch a l l en g in g adventure race. The four member team are all seriously accomp l ished endurance athletes. They and their supporters are now keen to help Heart Kids and are hoping to raise $100,000 over the next six months as they train and compete in the April 2016 event. GodZone is the ultimate expedition, adventure, racing experience. The event sees unsupported teams (meaning they must be self sufficient) t r ave l l in g approx imate l y 500kms, across New Zealand's wilderness, for up to seven days. Considered one of the most technically challenging adventure races in the world, teams have limited time to prepare their maps and strategy, before setting out. Teams also face additional c h a l l e n g e s ( s u c h a s orienteering) that are set at an elite level to ensure the event provides a good challenge to both brains and brawn.

Team Mobico Heart Kids are ready to tackle the World’s most challenging technical adventure race to raise money for

Heart Kids Canterbury and New Zealand. L-R: West Melton’s Rupert MacLachlan, with Hedley Wilton,

Along with unreliable weather, spring brings the opening of the Lawn Bowls season! While many have enjoyed the winter bowls offered at the Coalgate all-weather green these past months, it may well be said that all keen bowlers are looking forward to trying out the ‘grass’ again in the next week or two. Kirwee Bowling Club in High Street opens on September 26th (see the advertisement in this issue for further details), and welcomes prospective new members. This Club is renowned for its friendliness and assures beginners of encouragement, instruction and inclusion, as

they get to grips with the game. (I say this from personal experience.) If it’s not too wet we will have a friendly game and launch the new ones straight into it. There’s no need to bring anything except flat shoes; we have bowls you can borrow - and then join us for our customary delicious afternoon tea. But wait - there’s more! We are also holding a free ‘Have-a-Go’ day on Sunday, October 4th (wet or fine), purely for those who would like to try their hand - whether you’ve done it before or not. There will be a variety of games on offer, thanks to the

support of Bowls Canterbury. Look for the promotional trailer on Courtenay Road. At Kirwee, Ladies play on a Thursday, and Men on Thursday evening and Saturday. If you have got to a point where you have a bit of time on your hands and feel you don’t have enough social contact, then do consider taking up bowls. And think of all that fresh air and exercise! Warning: it is easy to become hooked - Bowls may take over your life!

Kirwee Bowling Club Secretary

Age is no barrier to getting your groove on! Zumba Gold - Providing a full workout in a fun and exciting social environment.

Age is no barrier to getting your groove on! Zumba Gold is coming to West Melton! Zumba Gold takes the popular Latin-dance inspired workout of Zumba and makes it accessible for the active older person, beginners or others needing a lower impact exercise option. Zumba Gold classes begin on September 14th at the West Melton Community Hall. The Zumba Gold workout uses dance/fitness routines set to Latin and international rhythms but is performed at a lower intensity than a normal Zumba class. The benefits of the Zumba Gold programme include s t r e n g t h e n i n g t h e cardiovascular system and helping to preserve, restore, or improve range of motion. This, in turn, can help with posture which not only makes folk look better but can also help make everyday activities easier to do. Beyond the physiological component, Zumba Gold is also a lot of fun which can be a huge motivating factor to

keep people coming back. “People get caught up in the music and movements and often forget that they are exercising,” said Kim who has been teaching Zumba Gold in Christchurch for the past year. There is also a huge benefit for participants in terms of connecting and socialising with others in the class. One aspect that attracts older adults to a Zumba Gold workout as opposed to other exercise classes is the music. “It’s a generation that grew up dancing,” Kim commented. “To be able to dance and move in a way that’s just fun and non-judgmental, while also having some health benefit, is a win-win situation.” Kim currently runs a Zumba Gold class at the Village Community Centre in Bryndwr on Thursdays at 1pm and it typically attracts people from their 50’s through to their early 80’s. Kim is excited to be starting up a local Zumba G o l d c l a s s - s e e advertisement in this issue for further details of this.

While the weather prevented many from viewing the Terrace Station garden on its previous

open day - Kate Foster (pictured) commented that there is still plenty to see.

Sadly the snowdrops at the previous Terrace Staon

garden walk were not enjoyed by many people due to

inclement weather, however they may sll be flowering in

September!

“It is a very strange season in the garden,” said Kate

Foster of Terrace Staon. “We look forward to the Open

Garden day on Sunday when the violets and primroses

will be beauful and hellebores sll looking good. There

will also be plants to purchase on behalf of the Terrace

Staon Charitable Trust.”
