PAYS D’ART ET D’HISTOIRE DES HAUTES VALLÉES DE SAVOIE
PIERRES-FORTES
DE SAVOIEITINÉRAIRE
FRANÇAIS . ENGLISH . ITALIANO
temps.

PIERRES-FORTESDE SAVOIE
FORTRESSES IN SAVOY
Launched in 1995, the Pierres Fortes de
Savoie ® program proposes a choice of
seventeen fortified sites stretching through
space and time. True stone sentinels scat-
tered along the alpine valleys, they are
static witnesses to a thousand years of
turbulent history. From mediaeval ruins,
both mysterious and romantic, to old forts
damaged by man’s madness, these defen-
sive edifices are bathed in an entrancing
atmosphere that will delight the imagina-
tion of visitors.
Their imposing sites imbedded in the
mountain setting, as impressive as their
panoramas, with wide perspective of the
surrounding valleys, will gratify all those
who contemplate them. Admirers of beau-
tiful edifices will appreciate the architec-
tural prowess of constructions on mountain
peaks and the sheer scale of some of the
sleeping giants as well as the care taken
for the simplest arrow slit. The ingenious-
ness of the slightest practical detail as well
as the technical sophistication of the more
recent works, are an unlimited source of
satisfaction for exacting admirers.
These forts and castles bring an original
touch to the Savoy landscape. They are
regularly brought to life during the guided
visits or during some theatric presenta-
tions or other events such as the Portes
du Temps. All being occasions for conse-
crating a few hours to discovering them.
PIETRE-FORTI DI SAVOIA
Lanciato nel 1995, il programma pietre-
forti di Savoia ® propone una scelta di
diciassette siti fortificati attraverso lo
spazio e il tempo. Vere e proprie sentinelle
di pietra ripartite lungo le vallate alpine,
sono testimoni fissi di una storia millenaria
movimentata. Dalla rovina medievale,
misteriosa e romantica, al vecchio forte
ferito dalla follia degli uomini, questi
insiemi difensivi sono immersi in un’atmo-
sfera ammaliante che incanta la fantasia
del visitatore.
I loro siti grandiosi incastrati in uno scrigno
di montagne, così come i loro panorami
aperti sulle vallate circostanti, faranno felici
i contemplativi.
Tante occa-
sioni da dedicare alla loro scoperta.
LE TEMPS DES BÉLIERS ET TRÉBUCHETS
Les portiers des Alpes
A l’aube de l’an mille, l’émergence de la
Maison de Savoie coïncide avec l’épa-
nouissement de la féodalité et la multipli-
cation des châteaux forts. Ces sites fortifiés
contrôlent les routes alpines, sources de
revenus et gages de sécurité pour la
dynastie savoyarde.
veaux armements. A la même époque, les
italiens choisissent d’établir leur ligne de
défense au col frontalier du Mont-Cenis,
tenue par des troupes de montagne.
Triomphe du béton et des cuirassements
Après 1885, le remplacement de la poudre
noire par des explosifs beaucoup plus
puissants impose l’adoption d’un maté-
riau nouveau : le béton. En Savoie, des
forts partiellement bétonnés sont cons -
truits au plus près de la frontière. Occupés
par des troupes alpines récemment
créées, ils assurent la sécurité des zones
frontalières. Au lendemain de la Grande
Guerre, la ligne Maginot des Alpes,
bétonnée, cuirassée et enterrée, renforce
le dispositif existant pour s’opposer effi-
cacement à l’agression des armées
fascistes, en juin 1940. Cette bataille des
Alpes est l’aboutissement d’une lente
évolution : à la montagne ouverte au cœur
de l’Etat savoyard, s’est progressivement
substituée sous la IIIe République une fron-
tière fermée entre deux nations rivales.

sive role of the castle to a secondary func-tion. Because of a lack of sufficient finan-cial means for adapting them, some wereruined during the modern wars, manywere not kept in a state of repair andothers were transformed into residentialmanor houses.
The advanced sentinel of PiemontIn 1563, Chambery, the capital of theduchy, which was henceforth, too close tothe Dauphiné which had become French, was transferred to Turin, in the shelter ofthe Alps. Only the Charbonnières fort andabove all, that of Montmélian, modernisedat great expense by the Italian engineersof the Duke of Savoy were capable ofslowing down attackers on the road toItaly. Besieged several times, they werefinally dismantled in the 18th century. Savoyhad to wait until the end of the FirstEmpire before it had a new fortified stron -ghold, the “Barrière de l’Esseillon” by theMont-Cenis.
THE ERA OF
THE HIGH EXPLOSIVE SHELL
The last stone and earth rampartsUnfortunately, the importance of “l’Es -seillon” declined less than thirty years later, after the works were finished. The incor-poration of Savoy into France in 1860, thenthe progress of artillery which henceforthfired high explosive shells over far largerdistances, weakened its defense capaci-ties. Faced with a Kingdom of Italy whichwas approaching dangerously from Italyand Austria, France preferred to fortify theopening to the alpine valleys by the “Séré
de Rivières“ forts, better adapted to thenew armaments. At the same time, theItalians chose to establish their line ofdefense on the border pass of Mont-Cenis, controlled by mountain troops.
Triumph of concrete and reinforced steelAfter 1885, replacing the black powder bymuch more powerful explosives meantthat a new material had to be adopted :concrete. In Savoy, partially concreted fortswere built nearer to the border. Occupiedby the recently-created Alpine troops, theyensured the security of the border zones.Just after the Great War, the Maginot lineof the Alps, in concrete, reinforced steeland minefields, strengthened the existingmilitary presence to effectively counteractthe aggression of the Fascist armies inJune 1940. This battle in the Alps was thefinal step in a slow evolution : the openmountains in the heart of the Savoy stateprogressively changed under the 3rd
Republic to a closed border between tworival nations.
A THOUSAND YEARS OF FORTIFICATIONS IN SAVOY
THE TIME OF BATTERING
RAMS AND TREBUCHETS
The entry posts to the AlpsAt the dawning of the first millennium, theemergence of the House of Savoy coincidedwith the flourishing of feudality and theincrease in the number of castle forts. Thesefortified sites controlled the alpine routes, which were sources of revenue for the Savoydynasty and guaranteed its continuity.
The citadels of mediaeval powerThe castle forts, centres and symbols ofauthority, strengthened their economic, administrative and legal functions by theirmilitary importance. Generally built on hill-tops, they were located along the mainthoroughfares, not far from the towns ornear to the border crossings, as is MiolansCastle in the Savoy Coomb. Initially thesewere austere Romanesque donjons oreven simple fortified mounds but theirdefenses were rapidly strengthened. Theyalso increased in number until there wasa close interlinked network of powerfulfortresses and simple fortified houses.
THE PERIOD
OF METAL CANNON BALLS
The agony of the castle fortsThe end of the Middle Ages saw thedevelopment of numerous amenitiesshowing a greater concern for comfort, whereas the invention of artillery firingmetal cannon balls relegated the defen-
