A safer India -- Kiran Bedi's next mission http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/001200801031821.htm January 3, 2008 A few days after quitting a top job with the police, the country's first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi on Thursday launched an e-portal for complainants who were refused help at police stations. Bedi along with her friends at 'Mission Safer India', a project of her NGO 'India Vision Foundation', will act as a "pressure group" which would act as a "bridge" between police and complainant and seek appropriate redressal. People can log on to www.saferindia.com and e-mail their complaint to the group, which would be forwarded to respective state police headquarters, Bedi told reporters here. "Approach us through e-mail, if you have visited the police station or police post to register your complaint and if it remains unattended or not acknowledged," she said. The Safer India will help people in 16 states. "Once we get a complaint, we will scrutinise it and forward it to state police headquarters. We won't recommend any action in any case but it is up to police to decide what action should follow," she said. However, she said, the group wants people to first visit the police station and try to register their complaint. "This mission is to strengthen police services to provide a safer India and not an alternative to police responsibilities," she said. She said this would be a turning point in police reforms. Bedi's application for voluntary retirement was accepted on December 24 and she had said that she would work to ensure reformation in police forces.

Kiran Bedi launches SaferIndia.com http://news.vakilno1.com/2008/01/kiran-bedi-launches-saferindiacom.html January 3, 2008 In her first major step after doffing her police uniform, Kiran Bedi Thursday blasted police officers for inefficiency as she unveiled a network to register complaints from the public. The retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer made it clear that her initiative would not serve as a parallel police but only register complaints when aggrieved citizens felt that they were being denied justice. In announcing www.saferindia.com, however, Bedi, India's first woman police officer who retired last month after 36 years in service, accused police officers of fudging crime figures. She told reporters that police officials were misleading the media and citizens by manipulating crime statistics. "They never give you the right picture. Not even a single police officer has dared to reveal the correct crime graph." She also said that police officials were not addressing complaints from people, and by refusing to probe criminal cases were actually encouraging criminals. "In my endeavour to bring reforms in policing, today we are launching a mechanism through which we would ask people to register their grievances with our website," she said.

Kiran Bedi joins hands with Mobile Mantra for a safer India mission http://www.exchange4media.com/e4m/izone1/izone_fullstory.asp?section_id=4&news_id=29243&tag=24151&pict=11 January 4, 2008 Kiran Bedi, retired IPS officer and Founder Chairperson of India Vision Foundation, has launched ‘Safer India’, as a mission to make India a safer place to live in. The Foundation has also launched a website in association with Mobile Mantra – saferindia.com – which would act as a bridge between ordinary citizens and police services. The website would encourage citizens to lodge complaints with the police, and if the police is reluctant to do so, citizens can take help of the site to lodge complaints. The website would forward the emails of the complainants to the police headquarters for their redressal. “I have an inside of knowledge of policing and I know the strength and weaknesses of the department. This is the time for me to utilise my experience in serving people as an ordinary citizen. A lot of complaints go unregistered due to the callous attitude of police personnel. We want the common citizen to come forward and lodge genuine complaints. This would put a pressure on the police department to take complaints seriously and act accordingly,” said Bedi. According to Naveen Varshneya, CEO, Mobile Mantra, only five per cent of the actual capacity of the site was being used, and that the company had planned to develop it more in the future. The website also provides some useful information like the working on the entire police system and all about first information reports (FIR), among others. There are also provisions to access the site in a better way through a Complainant Login and Police Login.
