Will a Dog Fit Into Your Lifestyle?

If youre thinking about getting a dog, there are many things you shouldconsider before rushing out and bringing home that cute, lovable puppy. You will be the one to take care of that animal for the rest of his life. He

will be totally dependent on you. A dog is not something you can buy andthen bring out of the closet occasionally to play with. They need dailyattention.

On the other hand, dogs make wonderful companions. They listen to your dreams without making sarcastic comments. They offer love andunconditional understanding when you need it most. They are playmatesfor you or your child. Dogs somehow work their way into your heart whenyou least expect it and become an integral part of the family.

You should consider carefully whether or not a dog would fit into your

lifestyle before making a decision. There are many different questions youshould ask yourself.

Do you live in an apartment or own your home?

Are you away from home a lot?

Do you enjoy going on daily walks or runs?

Can you remember to feed someone else beside yourself?

Do you have small children in your home?

Can you afford to buy food and provide veterinarian care?

Are you willing to take on the responsibility of a dog?

The size of your living space will help you determine whether or not youshould get a dog and which type of dog to consider. If you live in anapartment, you will probably do best with a smaller breed dog that doesntneed a lot of room to exercise. Toy breeds make excellent apartment pets. They dont take up a lot of space and you wont have to deal with 20 lb.

bags of dog food. If you own your home and have a large backyard, youmight want to consider a larger breed dog. Not only do large breed dogsmake excellent running partners, they are a wonderful deterrent to

    burglars.

How much time you have available to spend with your dog should be oneof the top things to consider when making your decision on whether or notto get a dog. Are you single and spend a lot of time at work? Are you a

stay at home mom that can give your pooch lots of care right along withthe children? If you are away from home during the day but still wouldlove to have a dog, you might want to consider a doggie daycare. Dogsthat are left at home can become lonely and lonely dogs becomedestructive dogs.

Dogs need exercise no matter what size or type of dog they are. Toy breeds may be satisfied with chasing a piece of rope you dangle from your hand while laying on the couch. Larger dogs would rather join you onyour morning runs or romp in the backyard with the kids. Make sure youhave the time thats needed to keep your dogs life a healthy one.

    There are manythings to

    consider before bringing home

a dog. Nutrition is important for dogs just as it is for you. Puppies require morefrequent feedings than older dogs and larger dogs just eat more. You willneed to take into consideration how much you can afford to spend on dog

food a month and if you have the time to make sure a puppy is fed on aregular schedule.

If you have small children in your home, you might want to wait a while before bringing a dog into the mix. Children can sometimes hurt a dog, especially the smaller toy breeds, without even knowing it. And, a dog cansnap at the child if he becomes tired of their constant attention. If your child is old enough to understand how to treat a dog with compassion andconsideration, then a dog can provide hours of endless entertainment andlove.

Can you afford to provide the veterinarian care that your dog needs? Atthe very least, your dog will need vaccinations and yearly boosters to keephim healthy. What if your dog had an accident or became ill? Could you

provide the medical attention he would need. One thing you might want toconsider to help you with the cost of emergency veterinarian care is petinsurance, which is covered in another section of this book.

Are you willing to take on the responsibility of a dog? Some people have ahard time taking care of themselves much less another living being.

If youve taken the time to seriously consider these questions and you believe you have what it takes to be a good dog owner, then the nextdecision to make is What type of dog should you get?

Why the Jack Russell Terrier is Special

The name of the Jack Russell Terrier was changed to Parson RussellTerrier effective April 1, 2003 as requested by the Jack Russell Terrier Association of America, which was changed to the Parson Russell Terrier

Association of America. The AKC recognized the Jack Russell Terrier onJuly 8, 1997. The name was officially changed to Parson Russell Terrier inaccordance with the country of origin the UK. The name Parson Russellcomes from Parson John Russell who bred and worked the dogs in 1795 1883.

    Jack RussellTerriers areintelligent,

    spirited, andabsolutelyfearless.

A Jack Russell Terrier is not a dog for every household. They areextremely energetic, intelligent, spirited, and absolutely fearless. It is saidthat the courage of a Jack Russell Terrier is never in doubt. They wouldnot make a good companion for someone that has to work a lot or wouldrather have a dog that will sit quietly. They demand a lot of attention and

can get into considerable amounts of mischief if their excitable nature isnt provided a suitable outlet.

Jack Russell Terriers are truly becoming a famous breed and can be seenin TV and movies. Most people are familiar with the PBS seriesWishbone, which features a Jack Russell Terrier. The TV showFrazier also has a Jack Russell Terrier named Eddie. These adorabledogs seem to be showing up everywhere these days. But it is good toremember that the dogs you see on TV and in the movies have hadthousands of hours of training with a devoted trainer.

If youre looking for a dog that is more than just a companion, then theJack Russell Terrier is for you. They are excellent hunters and have beenknown to stay underground in pursuit of their quarry for several dayswithout giving up. You and your Terrier could spend countless hourstogether training for competitions, which could provide a wonderful outletfor the stress and strain of everyday life that, not only your dog but alsoyou go through. A Jack Russell Terrier will keep you on your toes andfeeling young.

History of the Jack Russell Terrier

In England in the mid 1800s, Jack Russell Terriers were bred to hunt RedFox over and under the ground. Well-to-do families would sponsor foxhunts during their parties and get-togethers. The Jack Russell Terrier

ran along behind the hunting dogs just waiting for his chance to show hisstuff. When the fox would go to ground, the Jack Russell Terrier was thedog to go after him. He would track the fox into his den or down under ground to chase him out. He was never allowed to kill the fox on his own.

Jack RussellTerriers have been bred tothe hunt since

    the mid 1800s.

Terriers in the Southern part of England were baying dogs. They wouldfollow the fox underground and then if they were unable to chase themout, they would start baying. This allowed their master to know wherethey were located so he could dig down and release the fox. In the

Northern part of England where the ground was much rockier, it wasimpossible to dig down to the fox so the Jack Russell Terrier was trained

to drag the fox out of the hole.

The Jack Russell Terrier or Parson Russell Terrier, as it is now known, gothis name from Parson John Russell who bred and worked Terriers

between 1795 and 1883. The Parson had a passion for hunting and hiswork with Terriers was renowned.

Jack Russell Terriers have the height that allows them to run over roughterrain chasing the hounds or the fox and his build and flexible frameallows him to go underground and squeeze in after the fox.

After Parson Russell died, the name Jack Russell was used in a very broad style to cover all types of Terriers that were bred for work or thehunt. Many of these are not the celebrated Parson Russell Terriers but amore aggressive, less intelligent version.

The first Parson Russell Terrier club was founded in 1914 by Arthur Heinemann and the first breed standard soon followed.

Where to Get Your Jack Russell Terrier

If you have decided that a Jack Russell Terrier is for you, where do youfind one? Should you buy one from your friend, a pet store, or a breeder? How do you choose the puppy thats right for you? There are many places

where you can find Jack Russell Terriers for sale. All you have to do islook in the classifieds of the newspaper and there is usually a long list of puppies for sale. Choosing a puppy from someone who advertises in theclassifieds can be a risky business. Some of these places are well known, clean, and provide excellent dogs. Other places could be nothing but

puppy mills and should be avoided.

    Pet Store or breeder.

Where shouldyou get your Jack Russell

    Terrier?Puppy Mills

Puppy mills are nothing but dog factories that breed their animals as fastas they can. Making money is the object and the health of their dogs is nota factor that is even considered. Some are licensed and some are not. Theconditions that the dogs live in are usually horrible and disease and neglectare widespread. Puppy mill dogs are usually sick when you buy them or soon become sick and they often die. More than likely, youll be out aconsiderable amount of money on vet bills. Never consider buying a Jack Russell Terrier from a puppy mill. Pet stores are often not much better.

    Pet Stores

Pet stores go for your emotions. They capitalize on the cute, snugglyfactor with their puppies in cages staring out at you just begging to betaken home and loved. Choosing a puppy based solely on, which one hasthe dreamiest eyes is not the way to go about it. Even if the pet store isclean and the animals well kept, you dont know where the puppies havecome from. They may have originated from the very puppy mill youavoided early in the classifieds. If you do fall for the soft little eyeslooking at you adoringly form the cage, know that there are some thingsthe pet store should provide to you before purchase. They are required to

disclose information on the dogs health, age, and history. Theserequirements stem from puppy lemon laws that most states have regarding pet stores. If you do purchase your Jack Russell Terrier from a pet store, take him to your family veterinarian as soon as possible for a check up.Then do some checking on your states puppy lemon laws. They mayrequire the pet store to provide a full refund, exchange the pet, or at thevery least cover your veterinarian bills if something is wrong with the dogthat you were not told about at the time of purchase. These laws often

  • 8/4/2019 Jack Russell Terier Trening

    14/82

have a time limit on when you can return the dog and sometimes require acertificate from the veterinarian stating the congenital defect or seriousillness.

    Breeders

If youre sure that a Jack Russell Terrier is the dog for you, you will wantto choose one from a reputable breeder. A well-known breeder will let youto visit the mother and the father if he is on the premises. They will knowthe health history of the parents and their temperaments. Health screeningswill have been completed on the puppies to determine their risk for hereditary diseases. A good breeder will not hesitate to provide thisinformation to you when asked for it and most will offer it to you beforeyou ask.

Most breeders charge anywhere from $350.00 to $600.00 for a Jack Russell Terrier puppy. Or you might be able to purchase a puppy or adultdog from a rescue group at a lower cost. Just remember, your expenseswill not end with the purchase. There are many more costs that will occur over the life of your new dog including food, obedience training, vaccinations, and more.

How to Choose a Responsible Breeder

Picking a well-known, highly regarded breeder is crucial when choosingyour Jack Russell Terrier. Find a breeder that specializes in Jack RussellTerriers. Knowledgeable breeders select their breeding pairs with extreme

care. They strive to improve on characteristics and lessen the faults of each new generation of puppies. They want each new group of puppies to be healthier and more intelligent than the last. Dont pick a breeder immediately. Visit several different breeders that have been recommendedto you and tour the premises. Is it clean? Do the puppies appear to becared for, well fed, and lively? Are they healthy with no visible sores, runny noses, or fleas?

    Dont be afraidto ask

    questions.

    What Should You Ask?

You will also want to have a list of questions ready to ask each breeder.Dont be surprised if the breeders ask you questions as well. After all, these are their babies and they want to make sure they are going to a goodhome. Some of the questions you might ask are:

Have your dogs been tested for hereditary diseases?

What are the hereditary problems that can occur with Jack RussellTerriers?

How long have you been breeding Jack Russell Terriers?

Do you show your Jack Russell Terriers?

What type of health guarantee do you offer?

In return, breeders might ask you questions such as:

Is this your first Jack Russell Terrier or even your first dog?

Why do you want a Jack Russell Terrier?

Do you have children in your household and if so, what are their ages?

Do you have a secure yard?

Will the dog stay in the house or outside?

  • 8/4/2019 Jack Russell Terier Trening

    16/82

Does everyone in the household work during the day or willsomeone be home with the Jack Russell Terrier?

Is the Breeder Friendly and Honest?

Listening carefully to the breeders answers and answering their questionshonestly will help you be able to choose the breeder thats right for youand the breeder will be able to help you choose a puppy that will fit your needs best. He should also provide any proof of testing that has been doneon the puppies for medical or hereditary problems. Most breeders can

provide at least a three-generation pedigree for your puppy. If they refuseto answer questions or provide documentation on their Jack RussellTerriers, you should politely say goodbye and then move on to another

    breeder.

Does the Breeder Offer a Sales Contract and Health Guarantee?

The breeder should provide a written sales contract and a health guarantee.A good breeder will also help you after the sale with any questions youhave or advice that you need. They love hearing about their puppies andlike to keep tabs on their health and happiness. A respected breeder willnot hesitate to help you. If for some reason in the future you cant keepyour puppy, let your breeder know. They often place restrictions in their

sales agreements stating that you cant resell the puppy or give it away. Some breeders would rather have the puppies returned to them.

You may haveto wait for a

    puppy if the breeder doesnt

have anyavailable at thetime of your

visit.Waiting For a Puppy is Hard but May Be Best

If you locate a breeder that you like and feel comfortable with but theydont have any puppies available, dont hesitate to ask to have your name

put on a waiting list. You may have to wait a few months but it will bewell worth it.

    How to Choose a Puppy

Many people believe that you shouldnt choose the puppy. Instead, they believe the puppy should choose you. The only thing this really does iscause you to take home the most aggressive puppy. Dont immediately

rule out the puppies that hang back a little. Just because a puppy was shyand chose to check you out a little longer before getting near you doesntmean he wouldnt make a good pet. In fact, the less adventurous puppiesare often more relaxed and easier to train.

Observe the Litter as a Group

Dont immediately sit down and start playing with the puppies. Youshould first watch the puppies as a group from a distance. How do they act

with each other? How do they react to you, a stranger as you approach?Do they bark or are they shy and tuck their tails? You should avoid dogsthat are either very aggressive or very timid. Dogs that bark are sometimeshard to break of this habit. Jack Russell Terriers are baying dogs andgenetically know to bark at whatever they are hunting but excessive

barking all the time is not appropriate behavior. Shy puppies, on the other hand, usually havent been socialized enough with people and other animals. They grow up to be shy dogs that can snap or growl whenapproached.

What should you look for in a Jack Russell Terrier puppy? You want a

puppy that is naturally curious and not afraid of you. He may wiggle withhappiness, tug on your shoelaces, and nibble your fingers. He shouldnt beexcessively shy or aggressive. After he has satisfied his curiosity aboutyou, he should go back to playing with his siblings.

Select Two or Three Puppies to See Alone

Pay attention to how the puppies act with each other? Some will bedomineering and loud. Some will grab toys away from others. Some are

more apprehensive and are picked on by the others. You will want to finda genial puppy that is neither bossy nor timid. He should be attentive andself-assured. After narrowing your choices down to two or three, ask tosee the puppies alone without their siblings around. How they act in a

bunch may not be how they act when alone with you.

  • 8/4/2019 Jack Russell Terier Trening

    18/82

Should You Get a Male or a Female

Another thing to consider is whether you want a male or a female puppy.Do you want to raise puppies or maybe just provide a stud service? If youhave other male dogs in your home or neighborhood, you might want to

think twice before choosing a male so there will not be any unnecessary power struggles.

Show quality or pet quality, whats thedifference?

Do You Want Show Quality or Pet Quality

One important question to ask when choosing your Jack Russell Terrier puppy is whether you want a show quality dog or a pet quality dog. Bothdogs can be AKC registered but only show quality dogs can be shown atcompetition. They may also cost more than pet quality dogs. Show quality

dogs must conform to AKC standards, which you can find listed later inthis book. Pet quality dogs may not fit perfectly into these standards. Their weight might not fall into the right range or they may be a little too tall or have other faults that would make showing them impossible. Just becausethey are not show quality does not mean they wouldnt make a wonderfulfamily pet.

    Documentation

You will receive some documentation on your Jack Russell Terrier whenyou purchase him and additional documentation may arrive later in themail. These documents include:

    Health Certificates

The breeder can tell you what tests have been done for genetic problemson the puppies and the mother and father and possibly even thegrandparents. The breeder should be able to show you the test results if they have been done. Understand that just because your puppy has beenchecked doesnt mean that something might not show up at a later date.Usually when this happens, the breeder is willing to work with you.

    What paperwork should your

    breeder provide

    and whatshould youreceive later? Vaccinations

All puppies need their vaccinations. Some of these may have already beentaken care of by the breeder. Ask for a list of what was given and when soyou can give this information to your vet. Most puppy shots are given after six weeks of age. Puppy shots are sometimes called five in one or DHLP-P vaccinations because they are made up of five vaccines that willimmunize against five very common diseases. These are Canine

Distemper, Canine Hepatitis Virus, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, andParvovirus. Vaccines are fairly inexpensive and should be given to all puppies to provide them the best start in life. Additional information onvaccinations and a vaccination schedule is provided later.

    Warranty

You will want to find out what kind of warranty your breeder provides andget it in writing. Ask if the breeder allows returns, if something is wrong

with the dog, and what the time limit for those returns is. Some geneticdiseases dont appear until the puppy is almost two years old.

    Sales Contract

Some breeders dont have sales contracts but if yours does, you will needto read it through carefully. Are you being given full ownership of thedog? Is the breeder requiring you to neuter your dog? Sometimes unusual

items can be found in a sales contract. Make sure you understand yourscompletely.

    Registration Papers

If you are getting a pet quality dog, these papers might not be necessary. However, if you are getting a show quality dog that you intend to competewith, you will need the pedigree showing the dogs family history and anAmerican Kennel Club application filled out and signed by the breeder.

When you complete the application and send it to the AKC with a fee, they will then send you the registration papers.

Registration forms for dogs and litters are available for download at theAmerican Kennel Club web site. Pedigree

A pedigree is a family tree for your dog. It is a listing of his parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. Most owners will register their dogs names and pedigrees with the American Kennel Club. Then for a

small additional fee, the AKC will send you a pedigree on your dog andhis ancestors.

Some of the information that the AKC records is your dogs name, color, sex, parentage, date of birth, breeder and owner, and any titles the dog haswon. OFA and CERF certificate numbers are also recorded to show thatyour dog and his ancestors were certified free of inherited hip or eyediseases.

Your puppysfamily tree can be important.

Your pedigree may not be perfectly correct. The AKC relies on ownersand breeders to be honest when sending in their information. If a breeder

or owner isnt honest, your information could be incorrect. Being an AKCregistered dog does not mean it is a dog of good quality. Any purebred of any quality can be registered.

Having a pedigree may not mean much to you as a Jack Russell Terrier owner if you plan to have your pet for a companion dog only. But, if you

plan on breeding or showing your Jack Russell Terrier, a pedigree can bevery important.

If you have names on your pedigree paper written in red ink, those dogsare champions. To become a champion, a required number of points must

be won by beating other dogs at sanctioned shows.

If you are planning on being a breeder, a pedigree can be a good place tostart when researching your Jack Russell Terriers heritage. But for most

people, a pedigree is nothing but a list of names.

    American Kennel Club Standards

If you have decided to buy a show quality Parson Jack Russell Terrier, you will need to be aware of the AKC standards and make sure your dogadheres to them before you enter him into competition. These standards

according to the American Kennel Club include:

    General Appearance

When choosinga Jack RussellTerrier puppyor dog, follow

    the AmericanKennel ClubStandards.

The Parson Russell Terrier was developed in the south of England in the1800s as a white terrier to work European red fox both above and belowground. The terrier was named for the Reverend John Russell, whoseterriers trailed hounds and bolted foxes from dens so the hunt could rideon. To function as a working terrier, he must possess certain

characteristics: a ready attitude, alert and confident; balance in height andlength; medium in size and bone, suggesting strength and endurance.Important to breed type is a natural appearance: harsh, weatherproof coatwith a compact construction and clean silhouette. The coat is broken or smooth. He has a small, flexible chest to enable him to pursue his quarryunderground and sufficient length of leg to follow the hounds. Old scarsand injuries, the result of honorable work or accident, should not beallowed to prejudice a terriers chance in the show ring, unless theyinterfere with movement or utility for work or breeding.

    Size, Proportion, Substance

Size: Both sexes are properly balanced between 12 and 14 at thewithers. The ideal height of a mature dog is 14 at the withers, and

bitches 13. Terriers whose heights measure either slightly larger or smaller than the ideal are not to be penalized in the show ring

provided other points of their conformation, especially balance andchest span, are consistent with the breed standard. The weight of aterrier in hard working condition is usually between 13-17 lbs.

Proportion: Balance is the keystone of the terriers anatomy. Thechief points of consideration are the relative proportions of skulland foreface, head and frame, height at withers and length of body. The height at withers is slightly greater than the distance fromwithers to tail, i.e., by possibly 1 to 1 inches on a 14-inch dog.The measurement will vary according to height, the ratio of heightto back being approximately 6:5.

  • 8/4/2019 Jack Russell Terier Trening

    27/82

Substance : The terrier is of medium bone, not so heavy as toappear coarse or so light as to appear racy. The conformation of the whole frame is indicative of strength and endurance.Disqualification height under 12 or over 15.

    Head

Head: Strong and in good proportion to the rest of the body, so theappearance of balance is maintained.

Expression: Keen, direct, full of life and intelligence.

Eyes: Almond shaped, dark in color, moderate in size, not protruding. Dark rims are desirable.

Ears: Button ear. Small V shaped drop ears of moderatethickness carried forward close to the head with the tip so as tocover the orifice and pointing toward the eye. Fold is level with thetop of the skull or slightly above. When alert, ear tips do notextend below the corner of the eye.

Skull: Flat and fairly broad between the ears, narrowing slightly tothe eyes. The stop is well defined but not prominent.

Muzzle: Length from nose to stop is slightly shorter than thedistance from stop to occiput.

Jaws: Upper and lower are of fair and punishing strength.

Nose: Must be black and fully pigmented.

Bite: Teeth are large with complete dentition in a perfect scissors bite, i.e., upper teeth closely overlapping the lower teeth and teethset square to the jaws.

Faults: Light or yellow eye, round eye. Hound ear, fleshy ear, rounded tips. Disqualifications: Prick ears. Liver color nose. Four or more missing teeth. Overshot, under-shot or wry mouth.

    27

    28/82

    Neck, Topline, Body

Neck: Clean and muscular, moderately arched, of fair length,

gradually widening so as to blend well into the shoulders.

Topline: Strong, straight, and level in motion, the loin slightlyarched.

Body: In overall length to height proportion, the dog appearsapproximately square and balanced. The back is neither short nor long. The back gives no appearance of slackness but is laterallyflexible, so that he may turn around in an earth. Tuck-up ismoderate.

Chest: Narrow and of moderate depth, giving an athletic rather than heavily chested appearance; must be flexible andcompressible. The ribs are fairly well sprung, oval rather thanround, not extending past the level of the elbow.

Tail: Set high, strong, carried gaily but not over the back or curled.Docked so the tip is approximately level to the skull, providing agood handhold.

Faults: Chest not spannable or shallow; barrel ribs. Tail set low or carried over the back, i.e., squirrel tail.

    Forequarters

Shoulders: Long and sloping, well laid back, cleanly cut at thewithers. Point of shoulder sits in a plane behind the point of the

prosternum. The shoulder blade and upper arm are of approximately the same length; forelegs are placed well under thedog.

Elbows: Hang perpendicular to the body, working free of thesides. Legs are strong and straight with good bone. Joints turnneither in nor out.

Pasterns: Firm and nearly straight. Feet: Round, cat-like, verycompact, the pads thick and tough, the toes moderately arched

pointing forward, turned neither in nor out.

    28

  • 8/4/2019 Jack Russell Terier Trening

    29/82

    Fault: Hare feet.

    Hindquarters

Strong and muscular, smoothly molded, with good angulation and bend of stifle. Hocks near the ground, parallel, and driving in action. Feet as infront.

    Gait

Movement or action is the crucial test of conformation. The terriersmovement is free, lively, well coordinated, with straight action in front

and behind. There should be ample reach and drive with a good length of stride.

    Coat

Smooth: Double-coated. Coarse and weatherproof. Flat but hard, dense and abundant, belly and undersides of thighs are not bare.

Broken: Double-coated. Coarse and weatherproof. Short, denseundercoat covered with a harsh, straight, tight jacket, which liesflat and close to the body and legs. There is a clear outline withonly a hint of eyebrows and beard. Belly and undersides of thighsare not bare. Coat does not show a strong tendency to curl or wave.

No sculpted furnishings. The terrier is shown in his naturalappearance not excessively groomed. Sculpturing is to be severely

    penalized.

Faults : Soft, silky, wooly, or curly topcoat. Lacking undercoat.

    Color

White, white with black or tan markings, or a combination of these, tri-color. Colors are clear. Markings are preferably confined to the head androot of tail. Heavy body markings are not desirable. Grizzle is acceptableand should not be confused with brindle. Disqualifications: Brindlemarkings.

    29

  • 8/4/2019 Jack Russell Terier Trening

    30/82

    Character and Temperament

Bold and friendly. Athletic and clever. At work he is a game hunter, tenacious and courageous. At home he is playful, exuberant andoverwhelmingly affectionate. He is an independent and energetic terrier and requires his due portion of attention. He should not be quarrelsome.Shyness should not be confused with submissiveness. Submissiveness isnot a fault. Sparring is not acceptable. Fault: Shyness. Disqualifications:Overt aggression towards another dog or human.

    Spanning

To measure a terriers chest, span from behind, raising only the front feetfrom the ground, and compress gently. Directly behind the elbows is thesmaller, firm part of the chest. The central part is usually larger but shouldfeel rather elastic. Span with hands tightly behind the elbows on theforward portion of the chest. The chest must be easily spanned by averagesize hands. Thumbs should meet at the spine and fingers should meetunder the chest. This is a significant factor and a critical part of the

judging process. The dog cannot be correctly judged without this procedure.

    Disqualifications

Height under 12 or over 15. Prick ears, liver nose. Four or more missingteeth. Overshot, undershot or wry mouth. Brindle markings. Overtaggression towards other dogs or humans.

What and When to Feed Your Jack Russell Terrier

What you feed your Jack Russell Terrier is very important especially whenin the puppy stage. You will want to ask your breeder what they have beenfeeding your Jack Russell Terrier puppy and you should use the same

brand to prevent stomach upset. If you do want to change your puppysfood to a different brand, you should do it slowly in small stages.Exchange a small amount of the old food with the new food at each mealuntil the change has been completed. Do this progressively over a periodof seven to ten days. Be sure that you are changing to a high quality foodwith no artificial preservatives or colorings.

When and how much your Jack Russell Terrier eats will change as theygrow into adulthood.

    Feeding Puppies

    What you feedyour Jack

    Russell Terrier is very

    important

    especiallywhen in the

puppy stage. From birth to approximately four weeks, the puppy only needs his mother. At four weeks, the puppy may start showing a little interest in what hismother is eating. He may sniff the bowl, lick around the edges, lick hisfeet after hes stepped into the bowl, etc. He will probably not show aninterest in actually eating anything more than what he can lick off. At sixweeks of age, the puppy should be ready to wean.

Puppies need to eat differently than adult dogs to help them grow and keep

their nutrition level on an even keel. Food should consist of a nutritionally balanced diet made especially for growing puppies. They cant eat verymuch in one sitting so they need to be fed at least three times a day. Youcan reduce the schedule to twice a day when the puppy is four to fivemonths old. Always keep fresh water available for them at all times.

To develop good feeding habits, you should provide your Jack RussellTerrier with its own eating space. Feeding times should be at the sametime and place everyday. You might want to set up a place mat in the floor near your dining table and have your Jack Russell Terrier eat at the sametime your family has its evening meal. After all, he is part of the family.

    Feeding an Adult Dog

If your adult dog is a normal family pet and is not pregnant or a workingdog, he should be fed maintenance dog food for adult dogs. You candecide whether or not to feed your dog once or twice a day. Just make sure

  • 8/4/2019 Jack Russell Terier Trening

    32/82

you dont surpass the recommended amount of food for your dogs weightand excursive level. There are dog foods out there for every type of dog, overweight, active, couch potato

Do not feed your Jack Russell Terrier any people food. Snack foods such

as cakes, candy, and chocolate can make them very sick or, as in the caseof hard candy, can be a choking hazard. Also never give your Jack RussellTerrier bones of any kind. They can splinter and get stuck in their throat,

pierce an intestine, or tear the stomach lining.

    Feeding Your Pregnant Dog

During the first six or seven weeks of pregnancy, your female will keepthe same eating schedule and habits that she had before pregnancy. You

can gradually increase her food intake throughout the pregnancy if youwould like to so as to meet the nutritional requirements that are neededduring the last two or three weeks. After the puppies are born, the femalewill still need more food than normal to help her produce the milk the

puppies need. After the puppies are weaned, she can go back to her regular diet.

    Feeding Working Dogs

Hardworking dogs require more food than their couch potato counterparts. However, youll not want to feed them just before or after a strenuousworkout. It might make them sick. Do feed your working dog in themorning so he will have the energy required for the day. You might

provide a light snack for him during his resting period in the middle of theday but make sure he has plenty of time to rest before and after eating. Then you can feed him a little more at the end of the day after hes hadtime to cool down.

    Feeding Older Dogs

Older dogs have special diet requirements also. There are many differenttypes of commercial dog foods that are formulated for older dogs. Payattention to your dogs weight and make sure to adjust his food intake andnutritional requirements as needed.

What Type of Food Bowl Should You Use?

There are many different types of dog food bowls on the market.Whichever you choose is up to you, just remember to throw away any leftover food and immediately wash and rinse the bowls with soap and water.

Keep the water bowl next to the food bowl and filled with fresh water atall times.

Bringing Your Jack Russell Terrier Home

Before you bring your Jack Russell Terrier home, there are supplies to buyand your house needs to be puppy proofed. If your Jack Russell Terrier isgoing to be staying primarily in the backyard, you need to make sure the

yard is secure and that there is no area where the puppy can slip throughthe fence. Make sure no other animals that could harm your Jack RussellTerrier can get in. Keep the yard clean of debris that might choke a puppyor that could harm it in any way. Provide a warm, dry space for it to sleepduring cold or damp weather and a shady, cool place for it to get when thedays are warm. Also expect to have a few holes in your yard. Jack RussellTerriers are natural diggers. They are bred to hunt their prey and dig inafter them. If you have a show place garden, you might want to reconsider owning a Jack Russell Terrier.

    Puppy proof your house and

get ready to bring your newfamily member

    home. Beds

Jack Russell Terriers enjoy companionship and require a lot of attention. If left on their own too often, they can get lonely. A lonely Jack RussellTerrier can be a destructive Jack Russell Terrier. If your dog is going to beliving in your home, you will need to provide a place for it to sleep. Buy a

bed of unchewable hard plastic that is just big enough for your dog. Azippered bed cover will allow you to remove it and wash it when needed.Place the bed next to your bed or in the spot where you want the dog tosleep. If you prefer to have your Jack Russell Terrier sleep in another

room, make sure you start him out sleeping there. Dont let him sleep inyour room for a couple of weeks and then try to switch him. This will onlylead to frustration for you and your dog.

    Collars and Leashes

You will want to buy a collar and a leash so that you and your Jack Russell Terrier can go on walks. This will also make sure that he is safewhen you visit the veterinarian. The collar should be just large enough that

you can stick a finger between it and your puppys neck. Be sure to keephim on a leash at all times when he is not in a safe, secure yard or home.Jack Russell Terriers are notorious for taking off after small animals anddisappearing.

  • 8/4/2019 Jack Russell Terier Trening

    35/82

    Feeding Dishes

Also important are feeding dishes. You will want one for food and one for water. They can be made out of any substance, metal, plastic, crockery.Just choose a size suitable for your dog. Also, heavier bowls are not as

easy to scoot across the floor as light plastic ones. Make sure they stayclean between feedings and the water is always fresh and available.

    Toys

Jack Russell Terriers love to play so dont forget to buy a special toy for him. Make sure it is suitable for his size and not easy to tear into millionsof pieces that he could choke on. There are many styles of toys and someare even made that help keep the teeth clean when chewed. Dont allow

him to play with shoes or other things that are not made specifically for dogs. One day he might mistake something for a toy that is special to you.

    Pet Carriers

You might also like to have a pet carrier for when you take your Jack Russell Terrier for rides in the car. This will keep him safe during anaccident and out from under your feet while you are driving. You can seedogs standing in their owners laps while they are driving down the road

on any highway. It may look cute but it is dangerous.

    Grooming Supplies

Grooming supplies might also be nice to have. If you arent planning ongrooming your pet yourself, you will want at least a brush. Brushing isessential with Jack Russell Terriers as they pick up all kinds of burs, stickers, ticks, and other things while hunting and playing. Its also a greatway for you and your dog to spend some time together and can be very

    stress relieving for you.

    Grooming Tips

All coat types are easy to groom. Use a firm bristle brush and comb their hair regularly. Bathe them only when necessary.

Smooth-coated Jack Russell Terriers shed a lot and their hair sticks toeverything. The wiry-coated Jack Russell Terrier not only requires regular brushing but also occasional trimming and clipping.

Possible Jack Russell Terrier Health Problems andTreatments

There are many medical problems that dogs in general can get.Immunizations as a puppy can take care of most of them. There are also

some health problems that Jack Russell Terriers are more prone to. Thesehealth problems can be common and some are genetic. Below is a listingof some of these diseases, their symptoms, and treatments if any. Dont letthis list scare you from choosing a Jack Russell Terrier as a companion. These medical problems can usually be caught early and taken care of easily.

    Hypothyroidism

    There are somehealth

    problems thatJack RussellTerriers are

    more prone to.

This disease is usually rare in dogs. Dogs with thyroid disease have a low production of thyroid hormones. It is associated with cancer. There areseveral blood tests that can be used to confirm hypothyroidism. Some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

    Lethargy

    Weight Gain

    Cold Intolerance

    Chronic Infections

    Dry Scaly Skin and Dandruff

    Coarse, Dull Coat

    Bilaterally Symmetrical Hair Loss

    Ocular Diseases

    Ear Infections

Luxation or Dislocation of the Patella

Luxation or Dislocation of the Patella (trick knees) can also requiresurgery in Jack Russell Terriers. This ailment usually occurs in the first sixmonths of the puppys life. Skipping or odd hind limb carriage may beworsened with minor trauma. An unusual shaped shinbone or tibia or anextraordinarily shallow groove will misdirect the forces across the kneeand allow the kneecap to slip. Taking care of this situation early is criticalas prolonged aggravation may lead to osteoarthritis or progressivedegenerative changes.

In addition to surgery, you will want to keep your Jack Russell Terrier inlean body condition and use nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory medications. This condition can be hereditary so affected dogs should not be bred.

    Eye Disorders

When you are thinking of buying a Jack Russell Terrier, you will want to

ask your breeder if their dogs have had CERF (Canine Eye RegistryFoundation) testing. This is a new service and may not have been done. You can find a veterinarian that offers CERF testing and have your newJack Russell Terrier checked for a variety of eye disorders.

    Legg-Perthes

Legg-Perthes, also called Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, is a disease of thehip joints. The head of the femur begins to die and disintegrate. This can

cause limping, pain, and eventually arthritis. It appears between the agesof 6-12 months. It can be surgically treated by removing the head of thefemur and letting the muscles form a false joint.

Most deafness in Jack Russell Terriers is congenital. That means they

were born with it. More than likely, it is hereditary. Congenital deafnessoccurs more frequently with the piebald gene. Congenital deafness is nottreatable.

    Epilepsy

Primary epilepsy is most often seen in dogs between six months and fiveyears of age. A cause is usually not found but it cant be proved theepilepsy is a genetic defect either. Secondary epilepsy means that there is

a determined cause for the epilepsy. Most commonly found causes can bedegenerative in nature, developmental, toxic, infectious, metabolic, nutritional or traumatic.

There are many different types of seizures and it is important that you payattention when your dog has one so that you can give details of theoccurrence to your vet. Types of seizures include:

Generalized Seizure May be Grand Mal or Mild: In the grand malseizure, the dog falls, blacks out, and straightens its limbs rigidly.Breathing also stops. Other signs that occur are dilation of the pupils,

salivation, urination, and defecation. The mild seizure usually doesntresult in loss of consciousness. Generalized seizures are usuallyassociated with primary epilepsy.

Petit Mal Seizure: Petit Mals are very rare or unrecognized in animals.Signs are brief (seconds) duration of unconsciousness, loss of muscletone, blank stare, and possibly upward rotation of eyes.

Partial Seizures: Movements are restricted to one area of the body, such as muscle jerking, movement of one limb, turning the head or

bending the trunk to one side, or facial twitches. Partial seizures are

    usually associated with secondary epilepsy.

Complex Partial Seizures: These are associated with bizarre or complex behaviors that are repeated during each seizure such as lip-smacking, chewing, fly biting, aggression, vocalization, hystericalrunning, and cowering or hiding in otherwise normal animals. Dogsthat exhibit signs of Complex Partial Seizures dont lose consciousness

    40/82

but are obviously not aware of their surroundings. Complex partialseizures are usually associated with secondary epilepsy.

Cluster Seizures: Multiple seizures within a short period of time withonly brief periods of consciousness in between.

There are four stages to a seizure:

    1. The prodome may herald the actual seizure by hours or days. It is achange in mood or behavior. We do not know for sure whether animals experience a prodome except for the behavioral changesthat are seen by their owners.

    2. The aura is the beginning of the seizure. Signs include restlessness, nervousness, whining, trembling, salivation, affection, wandering,

hiding, hysterical running, and apprehension.3. The ictus is the actual seizure and lasts from 1-3 minutes.

    4. The postictus may be the only mark of epilepsy the owner is awareof, especially since most seizures happen at night or early in themorning. For minutes to days after the seizure, the dog may be

bewildered, disoriented, edgy, or unresponsive, or may wander or suffer from transient blindness. The dog is awake but unaware of what he is doing.

What can you do if your dog has a seizure? Keep track of how long theseizure lasts. Keep the dog as quiet as possible and remove children or other dogs from the area that could exasperate the problem. Speak softlyand calmly to your dog during and after his seizure. It will reassure him if you are there when he comes out of the seizure.

Dogs who have one or more seizures a month should get medicaltreatment. If you do give your dog medication for the seizures, follow thevets instructions to the letter and never change the dosage or frequency.

    Porcupines

Porcupines are not a disease but they are a definite health problem for Jack Russell Terriers and any other dog that loves to hunt. Jack Russell Terriers

just naturally go after rodents as prey and a porcupine is a rodent. Theyhave between 15,000 to 30,000 quills that can be used to deter an animalfrom attacking them. If your dog goes after a porcupine, the porcupine will

    40

    41/82

present his hind end to the dog and then ram his quills into the dog. It isvery painful and can be extremely dangerous to the dog.

Never try to remove the quills on your own. Try to keep your dog as stillas possible so he wont try to scratch or pick at the quills. Then get him to

a vet as soon as possible. The vet will need to sedate him to remove thequills.

    Fleas

Again, fleas are not a disease but can be a pesky problem and could lead toskin irritations. The best way to treat fleas is with several different

products at once. Ask your vet what he recommends. You will need toshampoo your dog to get rid of the adult fleas. Then you will need to treat

your home and the dogs bedding to get rid of any newly hatched fleas or eggs that have been deposited in your carpet, furniture, or the dogs bed.Flea collars are not usually a good idea. They dont seem to work verywell and some dogs could get into trouble by chewing on them.

    Chocolate

People usually think of chocolate as a treat but it can be very dangerous toyour dog. One little chocolate chip isnt going to make your dog sick but

large amounts of chocolate can be deadly. Chocolate has an ingredient thatacts like caffeine and makes dogs extremely hyper. If given in largeamounts, it can cause seizures.

    How to Choose a Veterinarian

Dont be overly excited about the previous list. Choosing a good breeder will assure you of getting the best possible puppy. And, verifying with the

breeder that he has had all the genetic testing completed along with the

beginning puppy vaccinations will give you a head start to raising ahealthy puppy.

Another thing that will help you raise a healthy Jack Russell Terrier ischoosing the best veterinarian that is right for you and your dog. Take asmuch time in choosing a vet as you did when you chose the family

physician. You want a vet that is friendly, intelligent, and willing to work with you. Do some research before you bring home your Jack RussellTerrier or soon after. Its always better to have a vet picked out before amedical problem arises.

    Choosing aveterinarian isas important as

    choosing afamily doctor.

    Ask for Recommendations

Ask people you know for recommendations on a good vet. Talk to your friends, family, and co-workers about who they use. Other people that arewonderful to ask for veterinarian recommendations are your breeder, obedience class teacher, or your groomer. Be sure you choose a vet thatspecializes in small animals or just dogs in particular. Some vets arestrictly large animal vets.

    Office Location

Choose a vet office that is close to your home. If an emergency comes up,you dont want to be hours away. Find out what their office hours are. Dothey make appointments on Saturday? Do they have late hours so you cancome after work? Do they have an emergency number you can call whenthey arent open?

    Office Inspection

After you narrow your choices down, visit their offices and ask questions. Are they equipped for emergencies? If they arent, do they have arecommendation for what to do in case of an emergency? Is there anemergency hospital nearby that they refer to? Ask the veterinarian if he isfamiliar with Jack Russell Terriers. Are there other vets that work in the

    43/82

office with him? Will you always be seeing him or will you at times seethe other veterinarians? Visit with his employees such as the receptionist. Are they friendly and considerate? Are appointments needed or do theytake walk-in clients?

How the vet answers your questions can tell you a lot. Is he friendly andwilling to talk? Or is he short with his answers and too busy to speak withyou? Does his office provide any other services such as grooming or

boarding? Is the office clean and well managed? Does it smell?

    Cost

An important factor in choosing a veterinarian is of course cost. If you feelcomfortable asking, find out what his fees are for general care such as

check ups or vaccinations. Also, do they take credit cards? Will he bewilling to work with you on payments if something expensive happenssuch as the need for surgery?

    Accreditations

If you decide to choose a veterinarian that is affiliated with an animalhospital instead of in private practice, check to see if the hospital is amember of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA).

Veterinarians can also be board certified in a particular area of medicinesuch as cardiology or surgery.

    Being a Good Client

Choosing a responsible veterinarian is only part of the job. You must alsolearn how to be a good client. Learn what is normal with your Jack RussellTerrier and be able to recognize if there is something wrong enough towarrant a visit to your veterinarian. Visit your veterinarian regularly for

check ups and always make appointments. Always be on time for your appointments. Never let your Jack Russell Terrier run loose in the office.Always keep him on a leash. If you do have an emergency, call to see if the veterinarian is available. If hes not, ask for a referral to a near byhospital or emergency service. And most importantly, dont call your veterinarian after hours for questions that can be answered during theworkday. Veterinarians have lives too.

uterine infections. Partial protection is provided against breastcancer.

When should you spay your female? The best time is after the firsttime she goes into heat but before the second.

Keeping a first aid kit for your dog is as important as having one for your family. You will want to have one in your home and another one in your car. Its just as important to be prepared for doggy mishaps, as it is humanones. Giving first aid can provide the extra time that is needed to get your dog to the emergency room. At the very least, your Jack Russell Terrier first aid kit should contain:

    Gauze Pads

    Adhesive Tape

    Hydrogen Peroxide

Keep a pet firstaid kit handy at

    all times for emergencies.

    A Cold Pack

    Ipecac Syrup

    First Aid Spray

    Antibiotic Ointment

    Hydrocortisone 1%
