10 travel products for every closet geekOne of the best things about travel the excuse to buy a bunch of stuff you have no use for duringnormal lifeBy Jane Leung (/author/janeleung) 7 July, 2012

Like Send Jane Leung, João Paulo and 582 others like this.

How are those Mac Hipsters going to fit this into their skinny jeans?

Travel can bring out the idiosyncrasies in everyone. Just read this(http://www.cnngo.com/explorations/life/10hostelmatesyoumeethell425328) for some proof.

For all those looking to get teched up before a trip, we matched the most typical travel personaewith the best new products.

1. The technological determinist: iPhone lens dial

You know the guy; he frowns at the girl with the Nokia E71 like she’s an escaped Amish milkmaid.

When it comes to photos, the technological determinist believes the iPhone breathes eternal digitallife to all reallife experiences.

He never looks up from his camera and only documents vacations via iPhone(http://www.cnngo.com/explorations/none/11crucialiphoneapps598817) where he will Photoshop andupload to Facebook/Twitter/Google+.

This geek will appreciate the gift of a multiple iPhone lens since the digital SLR will be obsoletein a matter of years.

The attachable extension has three lenses, a 0.7x wideangle to snap panoramic views, a 0.33xfisheye lens for extra drama, and a 1.5x telephoto lens.

Photo Jojo Lens Dial, US$250, photojojo.com (http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/iphonelensdial/)

Perfect for moms and cartoon spies.

There are laser beams. What other reason do you need?

The Doraemon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doraemon) always has a bottomless bag, but instead ofguided missiles and dreamreading machines, she unknowingly accumulates lipsticks, lighters, manicure kits, needles and nunchucks.

Airport security is always a nightmare with this one.

With this figureflattering trench, the Doraemon can pull off her coat and throw it into the Xraybucket, and there’s no need to sift through a large purse.

iPad, camera, phone, water bottle, sunnies and more can all get tucked into the coat withoutlooking like she’s extremely bloated.

Features include: 18 pockets, clear inside pockets, zipper and magnetic closures on pockets, andwater bottle holder. Comes in red, black, mud, mist, thyme, periwinkle and paprika.

3. The typo artist: Laser keyboard cube

The typo artist doesn’t like to travel with his heavy laptop so sometimes he just brings the iPad onbusiness trips.

But his untrained fingers have sent enough embarrassing autocorrect gaffes to develop a sexualharassment lawsuit.

Save him, with the 19 millimeter QWERTY Cube Laser Virtual Keyboard. It’s compact (a bit largerthan a matchbook), and perfect for banging out emails from the express hotel desk.

The keyboard connects wirelessly via Bluetooth to iPhone, iPad, some Smartphones, and mostlaptops. It charges via USB and requires no installation. The rechargeable battery lasts for 150minutes straight.

She’s brags about shredding every mountain in the world from Whistler to Niseko(http://www.cnngo.com/explorations/none/8asianskiresortsworthgondolaride340587) , while you’re stillfiguring out how to tie the boots up without tripping.

How will you win her affection when she won't give you the time of day? Give her an extremelycomplicated pair of GPS ski goggles that she can't understand. That'll get her off her high horse.

Zeal Optics’ Z3 GPS Goggles (http://www.zealoptics.com/) have adjustable light levels, and reduce99.9 percent of glare from the sun. The headmounted display technology has 3D datacapturingfeatures.

The James Bondinspired goggles capture your ride by providing realtime access to performancestatistics including speed, altitude, temperature, and time during your run down the slopes.

Users can see their fastest and slowest speeds, review individual runs, and see vertical distancecovered.

This makes you feel guilty for playing Xbox all winter and not having diarrhea for five days.

Eating, laughing, sleeping: Holidays for everybasic human needBarely got time to eat, sleep or breathe? You need a vacation to one of these functional retreatsBy Jane Leung (/author/janeleung) 4 June, 2012

Like Send Joyce Li and 47 others like this.

Fake or real, laughter works.

Was Mel Brooks' notion of selling air in his 1987 movie "Spaceballs" all that ridiculous?

Not if you look at some of the vacations on offer around the world today.

While not quite as simple as air in a can, tour agencies and holiday retreats are tapping a trend forbacktobasics R and R, where biology is turned into the central premise of a break.

1. Laughter retreats

It's been scientifically proven that a burst of faceaching laughter can lower stress levels, which iswhy there are workshops dedicated to learning to laugh even when there's nothing funny going on.

Through breathing techniques, Laughter Yoga Workshops teach guests how to use “yogalaughter” to help lighten up their lives physically, spiritually, mentally and emotionally.

Using “real” and “pretend” laughter, people can learn to laugh on their own without being provokedby jokes, good mood or the “Vandelay Industries” episode of Seinfeld.

Laughter yoga retreats are available worldwide; check www.laughteryoga.org(http://www.laughteryoga.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=330&Itemid=729) forupcoming events

Work out who snores, then go somewhere else.

Catch your own dinner.

It’s cruel and unusual how fast the mind races when you’re trying to slink into unconsciousness.

For those who have serious insomnia, The Sleep School is designed to teach sleep seekers howto mentally escape everyday stress to focus on reversing the painful ritual of tossing and turning inthe sheets.

Located at La Source resort in sleepy Grenada in the West Indies, and led by sleep physiologistDr. Guy Meadows, the weeklong course includes workshops, group therapy, yoga and more.

Anyone can go on a “foodie” holiday, but only real aficionados capture their meal live.

You might not eat the ones you catch, but in the small locality of Grebbestad in Bohuslän County,Sweden, fishermen take tourists on “lobster safaris” and teach them how to catch and cooklobster.

The boat trip runs for about twoandahalf hours and includes horseradish cheese, Grebbaestadseaweed crispbread, coffee and drinks.

The safari package includes choice of one or two nights of accommodation.

The pièce de résistance is a succulent fresh lobster supper.

Just as nonvoluptuous women at bikinimandatory spotssuch as Dino Beach (http://www.cnngo.com/shanghai/play/poolparty667317) often feel the sting of physical inadequacy, itturns out that men struggle with insecurities related to thedreaded "disappearing act" as they emerge fromunforgiving ocean temperatures.

Not anymore.

Just in time for summer, a Chinese company hasintroduced the Male SizeEnhancing Speedo Bulge.

To avoid an unexpected slip of the sack, each cup is equipped with “bra hooks” that attach to theswimmerfriendly codsack.

Gone are the days of creeping out of the water holding close to “an interesting species ofseaweed” just to divert attention.

The Male SizeEnhancing Speedo Bulge sells for RMB 53 (about US$8) a small price to pay forthe confidence “boost.”

At last, a way to find the man of your dreams and earn the key to his ... safety deposit box?

The Beijing Moral Education Center for Women is running 30hour training courses, costing RMB20,000 (US$3,094), to train women on how to lure a wealthy bachelor, as reported on the officialcity website, Shanghai Municipal People's Government.(http://www.shanghai.gov.cn/shanghai/node23919/node23923/u22ai46526.html)

Courses include conversation skills, personality development, makeup tips and traditional teapouring techniques that are intended to charm an affluent man.

For a secure life

The center's founder Shao Tong, who also teaches at the school, focuses on "educating" studentshow to decipher a man's character and personality, including how to detect a liar.

The timing could not be better for the hopeful Cinderellasas the Hurun Wealth Report(http://www.cnngo.com/shanghai/life/howmanychinese

The school has already attracted more than 2,800 mainlymiddleclass students since it opened in August 2010.

"My family had a business and there was a time when things were very difficult for us," she said.

"During that period, I was struggling a lot inside, asking myself why we have to do this, why mychildhood had to be so different from other people's.

"So I thought to myself, if I can marry a rich man, at least I won't have any worries."

Adding to the allure of the program, wealthy eligible Chinese bachelors have approached theschool in search of soul mates”, paying up to RMB 30,000 for introductions.

切换到简体中文 Switch to 한국어World's happiest countries: 1 to 187It's good to be Norwegian, according to the U.N.'s latest "happiness index"By Jane Leung (/author/janeleung) 4 November, 2011

Norway ranks number one on the UN Human Development Index.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Norway has been declared the world's happiest country. Justas unsurprising, the Democratic Republic of Congo came last.

The United Nations Human Development Index 2011 (http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/) measureshappiness in different countries based on factors such as income, education, health, lifeexpectancy, economy, gender equality and sustainability.

"To be more accurate, one would say this measures the quality of life. It goes beyond income toinclude basic measures like education and health," says Surekha Subarwal, U.N. communicationsrepresentative from New Delhi.

More on CNNGo: Best cities to travel in 2012 (http://www.cnngo.com/explorations/escape/lonelyplanetbestcitiestravel2012716747)

Essentially the index implies that if you live longer, earn more money and have access to goodschools and healthcare, you're probably going to be happier than people who don't.

“This is more than just the traditional index which just measure average income, health andeducation,” says Adam Rogers, the U.N.'s communications officer in Geneva. "This measurementof human wellbeing and happiness introduces the inequality dimension, a measure of access tohealth and education.”

Bhutan, the only country that gauges its progress by measuring its people's happiness rather thaneconomic contributions, came a rather lowly 141.

Rogers clarifies, “This study is much more empirical than the Gross National Happiness(http://www.bhutan.gov.bt/government/gnh.php) (GNH) Index you will find in Bhutan, which is quitesubjective.”

Just missing out on a top 10 spot was Switzerland in 11th place. The United States came fourthwhile the United Kingdom came 28th, below Hong Kong (13th), Korea (15th), France (20th),Singapore (26th) and the Czech Republic (27th).

I live in Norway, and i like the Norwegian people, but how could you be happy

when no one talks to each other...zero social skills...everyone does the same things and

wear the same fashion...no one wants to stand out...everyone knows how much tax you

pay and how much money you earn...food prices are CRAZY...children have no

discipline...cry a little and get what you want...spoiled children/spoiled adults....its all about

ME ME ME...number one complainers..cold/dark...drunken capital..the women are very

beautiful form the outside, but just wait until you get to learn about her inside...good tap

water...everyone calls in sick to work, even its only a little pain in the toe..Car prices are

CRAZY...even when you die you have to still pay monthly payments on the grave, if you

miss too many payments, they will dig you up and put someone in that spot who can

pay..seriously..one parking ticket will cost you max $100 USD...if they tow you car and

you have to go pick it up..cost $600 USD....i can keep going on on on, but will not..I like

Beer in Space tour could be possible by 2013An Australian travel company teams with space engineers to plan the ultimate pub crawlBy Jane Leung (/author/janeleung) 18 October, 2011

Like Send 195 people like this. Be the first of your friends.

Drinking in space requires slightly moreprep work than your average keg party.

There's only one element in the universe that could possibly make the majestic view of the Earthfrom outer space even more godlike. That, of course, would be beer.

That's the idea, anyway, behind a Beer in Space (http://www.beerinspace.com/) tour currently beingplanned by Australian pub tour operator Thirsty Swagman (http://www.thirstyswagman.com/) .

Successful early "space beer" tests have the company hoping to get its tour buzzing off the launchpad by 2012 or 2013.

“We want to be the first tour company to offer beer in space,” says Thirsty Swagman ownerKenneth Hart.

Click here for Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=uUh4w68yNGk) : A flightresearcher samples 4 Pines Brewing's Vostok Space Beer and takes biometric readings including skin temperature and Breathalyzer analysis during a zerogravity flight.

In space, the company will provide a brew specially crafted by the Australiabased 4 Pines BrewingCompany (http://www.4pinesbeer.com.au/) to be consumed in a lowgravity environment.

In February, the beer successfully completed the first of several trial flights, according to a pressrelease (http://vostokspacebeer.com/pressreleases/VostokPressRelease_26f%20Feb%202011.pdf) by SaberAstronautics Australia (http://www.saberastro.com/home/index.html) , a Sydneybased spaceengineeringcompany that has partnered with 4 PInes to help develop the world's first space beer.

While astronauts are rumored to have consumed alcohol on flights, NASA forbids drinking inspace, so formal studies on the effects of alcohol in space have not previously been carried out.

Chug one in space for a mere $95,000

Thirsty Swagman aims to package flights that allowtourists to ascend 300,000 feet into the sky, past theKármán line (where outer space is said to begin) into zerogravity. Subject to change, prices are set to begin atUS$95,000.

Drinker/astronauts will be weightless for five to 10minutes, during which time they'll enjoy a nice view ofearth while sipping a Vostok Space Beer(http://vostokspacebeer.com/) , the 4 Pines beer brewed forconsumption in space.

Though it has all the makings of a good hoax, themasterminds behind the plan swear they're serious.

Saber Astronautics Australia director Jason Held calls the plan "viable" and "real."

"The conditions are being set," Held promises.

Making "space beer"

In an unconventional partnership, Saber Astronautics Australia engineers teamed with 4 PinesBrewing to conceive a tasty stout that, at 5.1 percent alcohol, can be consumed in zero gravity.

“The beer was started with a crafted recipe from 4 Pines Brewery (http://www.4pinesbeer.com.au/) ,"Held says. "Their flavors are really nice and sharp, which is important when producing anythingconsumable in space.”

In space, you get tested before you drink, not after. Here, a hopeful space guzzlerchecks his skin temperature.

Stout from 4 Pines tastes delicious on earth, too.

“There are two considerations when developing a space beer," Held continues. "First, your senseof taste decreases over time. This is because your blood does not pool at your feet the way it doeson earth.

“Because the face and tongue swell up a little bit (inspace), some astronauts have described it as kind of likehaving a mild head cold. No big deal, but it does affect theflavor."

The bigger problem is recreating that magical fizz cravedby beer lovers.

“The second issue is carbonation," Held says. "In space, gas and liquid don’t like to separate, so if you feel like youwant to burp, you’ll get a wet burp.”

Not a complete disaster, depending on the company, butstill, something most drinkers prefer to avoid.

“If you remove carbonation altogether, your beer isnothing more than an alcoholic tea," Held explains. "Sospace beer has to have balance enough carbonation totaste good, but low enough to be comfortable for

drinking.”

Saber Astronautics Australia tested various recipes in environments as close to space as it couldsimulate. The first was in a 23meter "drop tower," which provided a twosecond window in whichto study the effects of zero gravity on beer.

“Then we had a person drink small cups in a modified Boeing 727 for bursts of 30 seconds of zerogravity, to prove that the beer was tasty and comfortable to drink," says Held.

Space buzz: How strong will it be?

Beer in space sounds like a good idea (as we're not piloting the ship), but it might be too soon forcollege students and other champion booze hounds to start booking tickets. According to Hart, since they'll be able to consume so little beer, pioneering space guzzlers won’t actually feel mucheffect from the alcohol.

“They will likely only be drinking a sample size of about 150 to 250 milliliters of beer,” Held says.

Like taking a step on the moon or reading "Warand Peace," it’s all about saying you’ve beenthere and done that.

Flight logistics on the Thirsty Swagman Beer inSpace tour will depend on the space carrier thecompany ultimately partners with.

The company is in talks with space touroperators such as Virgin, Rocketship andArmadillo, according to Hart, but dates andcommitments are unconfirmed.

“There are no firm dates yet, because so manyof the regulations for commercial space flight arestill being drawn up," says Hart.

"The Space Beer is to meet expected demandfrom the soon to launch space tourism market, which will have thousands of passengers bookedon suborbitalflights starting in 2012," accordingto a press release

(http://vostokspacebeer.com/pressreleases/VostokPressRelease_26f%20Feb%202011.pdf) from SaberAstronautics Australia.

“Four Pines supplies the beer, and Saber Astronautics conducts the experiments," concludes Held."Our work with (Thirsty Swagman) is in fairly early days and we’re hoping to make it happen."

Thirsty Swagman specializes in "drinking adventures" that combine international traveling with pubcrawls. The company's previous offerings have included a roundtheworld pub crawl(http://www.thirstyswagman.com/D143aroundtheworldin80pubs.html) , on which tourists went on thedrinking binge of a lifetime, from Sydney to Düsseldorf to Hawaii.

3D travel portal offers a virtual trip to EverestWant to check out Nepal before you buy your ticket? Now you can in 3D and with soundBy Jane Leung (/author/janeleung) 13 December, 2011

Nepal at your fingertips.

Nope, it's not an easy level of "CounterStrike," it’s a 3D virtual walking tour of Durban Square inPatan, Nepal.

Singaporean marketing company 3rd Planet (http://3rdplanet.com/about.html) has released its 3Ddownloadable travel portal with its first project "Journey to Everest" created in collaborationwith Nepal Tourism (http://welcomenepal.com/promotional/) board.

It includes five 3D tours within Nepal. See a video tour here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuDYql6fses) .

The company aims to have a 3D preview of all the major tourist destinations around the world. Atpresent, only its Nepal feature offers 3D interactive tours.

With the pointofview mimicking a firstperson shooter game, users can navigate their way aroundTribhuvan Airport, stroll around Patan Durbar Square or fly above Lukla in a plane.

Unlike virtual tours used by some travel sites, which are often panoramic views of 2D photos, theimages used in 3rd Planet create accurate representations of the enviornment. Sound effects arealso included, giving a more realistic experience.

The site is a destination marketing tool for tourism boards, but it's also a useful tool for travelershoping to learn about a city before arrival.

“Consumers need to be better educated before theytravel, it will change the way they book trips, they can seemore than just promotional photos,” said Terence Mak,CEO of 3rd Planet (http://3rdplanet.com/about.html) .

So what's the difference between this and Google StreetView?

"You will be able to see a lot more details, inside oftemples, inside buildings, airports, through the backalleys, and tourist information is ready available atdifferrent landmarks,” said Mak.

“It is about time that the tourism industry uses marketing instead of just branding.

“We work with tourism boards to make sure we are getting official, real content. Then we askthem, what do you want to highlight that can’t be justified in a picture? ”

If you're worried about losing the element of surprise, Mak said don't worry.

“We are only showing 30 percent of the destination, its just a teaser, we don't use super highquality CGI so it’s easy to download"

Currently, there are over a hundred preview landmarks and cities on 3rd Planet(http://3rdplanet.com/index.html) in development. According to Mak, more 3D cities will appear in2012.

The software is webbased and supported on Mac and PC platforms. The platform is free for thefirst one million subscribers. More destinations will appear in the next two to three years.

Switch to 한국어Best cities to travel to in 2012Lonely Planet names a surprising list of next year's upandcoming tourist destinationsBy Jane Leung (/author/janeleung) 3 November, 2011

The Olympics are coming finally, anexcuse to change Paddington Bear's outfit.

" I didn't know Satan's horns were thatsmall."

Forget what you know about these unusual choices for best city. Their standings on this LonelyPlanet (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/england/london/traveltipsandarticles/76861) list don't go without merit.

New stadiums, global events, pop culture, festivals, and a little bit of fresh paint have all madethese cities the next stand out stars of 2012.

1. London, England

“The Olympics are riding into town and a whole swath ofthe capital is being transformed in the process.” LonelyPlanet

This culturally saturated, yet sometimes dreary cityrevives itself with Olympic hype. The Games will givetourists more to look forward to than the standard touristroutine of Big Ben, Tate Modern and the London(http://www.cnngo.com/explorations/life/cnngotvlondon/video

The Royal Wedding in 2011 may have also given a littlenudge to tourism in this England capital. Tour companieshave been doing Will and Kate tours to add to the existingiconic Beatles, Harry Potter, and Jack the Ripper tours.

2. Muscat, Oman

"Oman is firing on all fronts to attract international visitors, expanding everything from its museums to its resorts.Muscat is the focus for the revamp, with cultural events, luxury accommodation and aquatic activities taking centerstage." Lonely Planet.

This city historically hasn’t garnered much travelerattention but it has everything an active vacation calls for:markets, beaches, diving, turtle/dolphin watching, caving(http://www.cnngo.com/explorations/play/naturalwonderbucketlist

It’s the perfect destination for families, couples, and thrillseeking men facing a midlife crisis.

Also, have you seen their completely post modern flag?

Bangalore great for photo ops.

Don't expect the scary Stockholm StiegLarsson pictured.

“Perpetually drunk on the good life, this South Indianmetropolis packs in the best brews, the scrummiestcuisines, and the liveliest arts and music scene, not tomention the hippest population you could hang out with.
