Takashi Atoda is a president of Japan Pen Club. He is one of the most famous short-story writers and his style of works is recognized as his unique black humor. He made his debut with Reizoko yori ai o komete (1953, Love From The Refrigerator). Mr. Atoda has received the Award of the Mystery Writer's Association of Japan for Raihousya (The Caller) and won the Naoki Prize for Napporeon kyo (1979, Napoleon Crazy).

Jiro Asada is famous for his fiction samurai stories as well as modern novels. He describes himself as Shousetu no taishuu shokudou meaning that he is a 'cheap public restaurant' delivering any topic that the public wants. He also says that writing is the best hobby for him, consequently he has written more than 70 works in his 14 years of novelist activity, and is still eager to publish new novels. Mr. Asada’s novel Metro ni notte was awarded the Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for New Writers and made into a 2006 film; poppoya (Station Master) was also awarded the Naoki Prize.

JCCC Ohana HulaSeveral Hula for Health sessions has been held at the JCCC since May 2009 and the classes have been extremely popular for ladies of all ages. The group has performed at many JCCC functions, including a command performance in Kobayashi Hall last September with Hawaii’s renowned Makaha Son’s 7th World Tour performance. Many ladies, ranging in age from their 20’s to 80’s, have been bitten by the Hula bug and are devoted dancers and performers. Because of the high level of interest for performances, the Hula members decided to start a Hula club. After several meetings and much discussion, members decided on the name JCCC Ohana Hula. Ohana means family or company in Hawaiian, so in essence, the name means “JCCC Hula Family”. There are 2 performance groups within the club – the senior ladies group, which has chosen the name “Lahaina Luna”, the name of thefirstsonganddancetheylearned.Lahaina is a picturesque, historic Town in Maui and Luna means moon. The younger ladies have picked the name “Moana”, which means ocean. Their movements are as soothing and hypnotic as the gentle waves on the ocean. We hope you like the names, and we are looking forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming performances! Aloha! Yuki Hipsh, JCCC Ohana Hula Chair

The Ghost Brush by Katherine Govier - An Author Reading and Shining EventThe JCCC is very pleased to announce an evening on Thursday June 3, 2010 with leading Canadian writer Katheine Govier on the launch of her latest Japan-themed novel: THE GHOST BRUSH. The novel is a powerful work, combining international research, scholarly detective work, and imagination to bring Oei, the great, lost woman artist, to life. Oei’s drive to paint led her through the barriers of tyranny, political upheaval and famine. But when her strength was pitted against her father, the iconic artist, Hokusai, she could only submit.

Katherine Govier has published 8 novels and 3 collections of short stories. Her last novel was THREE VIEWS OF CRYSTAL WATER (4th Estate, London, UK; Harper Collins, Toronto). Her previous novel, CREATION, was a New York Times Notable Book of 2003.

Katherine has spoken at the Lahti International Writers’ Reunion in Finland, at the International Festival of Authors in Toronto, at Cambridge University, Princeton University and at the Canadian Embassies in Tokyo, New Delhi and London. She was President of PEN Canada and helped found the new program ‘Canadian Journalism for Foreign Trained Writers’, which is open to refugee and immigrant writers, at Sheridan College, Oakville, Ontario.

Details will be announced in the next newsletter.

THE GHOST BRUSHAs a child, Oei joined her father Hokusai, the world famous printmaker, in his studio. In the 19th century, a time when a woman was considered a possession of her menfolk, Oei laboured to bring her father’s and her own visions to life. Her home of Edo (Tokyo) was the largest city in the world, teeming with peasants, warriors, townsmen, merchants, and nobles. Eccentric, free-living and devoted, Oei left hundreds of beautiful pictures. But she-- and her work-- are lost to history. Or are they? Together they frequented the “floating world” of licensed brothels, teahouses and kabuki theatres, personifying its dynamic culture that parodied everything aristocratic. Oei took women as her special subject. She contrasted the lives of courtesans and townswomen with those of noblewomen. She illustrated manuals for female behavior-- etiquette, housekeeping, fashion, even childbirth. But appropriate female behavior was precisely what she refused to adopt. She drank, smoked, divorced and took lovers-- yet always remained a dutiful daughter. Oei’s drive to paint led her through the barriers of tyranny, political upheaval and famine. But when her strength was pitted against the man who made her who she was - the iconic Hokusai, creator of The Great Wave and 36 Views of Mount Fuji, she could only submit. Now, 150 years after the death of Edo’s great eccentrics, scholars examine the thousands of Hokusai paintings that are in museums from New York to London to Amsterdam to Tokyo. Some are called forgeries: others are acknowledged to be the work of students. But the authorship of the greatest works, painted in the last ten years of Hokusai’s life, is a mystery. This powerful novel combines international research, scholarly detective work, and imagination. A great, lost woman artist is brought to life-- as is the process by which she was subtracted from history. Copies of Katherine Govier’s work, including The Ghost Brush, will be available for purchase and signing at the event

Haru Matsuri 2010Two beautiful, warm sunny days on March 6 and 7 inspired almost 4000 people to come out to the JCCC’s annual Haru Matsuri. Never before has the JCCC seen such a huge number of visitors for this traditional welcome to Spring.

Upon entering the building, many visitors were awed by the impressive Hina Matsuri display our entrance. The beautiful one-of-a-kind display, which is traditionally set up for Girls Day in Japan, saw many photos with families, children and visitors alike.

In Kobayashi Hall visitors found a variety of vendors, and cultural crafts as well as live entertainment. Performances included all of the favourites, but saw many changes to make them new and exciting. The Sakura Kai and the Ayame Kai showcased their new repertoires. The koto performances were enhanced with the addition of a bass koto and a shakuhachi. Yakudo Traditonal Drummers included their young students in their program. We also saw the addition of Yosakoi Soran, a new more contemporary form of Japanese Dance, and Hula, with students of the JCCC’s Hula for Health classes.

Of course, there were also the demonstrations of martial arts in the dojos, tea ceremonies and Katari storytelling in the Japan Information Centre, Japanese delicacies to eat and more vendors throughout the building. We also had many activities for children, including an OPP motorcycle, and a very busy Children’s area with Kamishibai storytelling, Japanese videos and hundreds of children designing fans or making origami to take home with them.

With all that there was to see and do, it was no wonder everyone had a great day!

The JCCC thanks the individuals, groups and organizations that provide the entertainment and demonstrations. We also thank all the great volunteers (over 200!) and staff, who all helped raise this great community tradition to new and greater heights!
