ExECUTIvE DIrECTOr HOlIDaY MESSaGE

It has certainly been a busy and exciting year at the JCCC. Momentum continues to build - the Kobayashi Hall is in constant demand, providing a venue for monthly film nights, community events and festivals, classical and jazz performances, martial arts tournaments and weddings. This year we also played host to numerous traditional musical performers from Japan, including a rare performance of gagaku from Otonowakai and a koto concert from Yoshio Hiratsuka’s ensemble. We also co-presented the Sankai Juku performance at the Hummingbird Centre. We started 2006 with a New Year Eve Dinner Dance followed by our annual Shin-nen Kai - an osechi ryori traditional New Year’s feast accompanied by acclaimed jazz-man Gene DiNovi. The JCCC hosted a great Nostalgia Night, Tak Yoshida’s benefit dinner show, an anime Halloween party, a sword forging session, family movie day, three community singing shows and huge heritage speaker events with world-renown architect Raymond Moriyama and Canadian Olympian Vicky Sunohara. With all the corporate events we host on top of these, we came to realize we were fast becoming victims of our own successes. In response, we sat down to reconfigure our internal communication and planning processes in support of all this new activity. We look forward to even bigger and better things in 2007. Overall membership and enrollment in traditional cultural arts, martial arts and Nihongo programmes and workshops continue to increase. Our traditional festivals and events proved to be the most successful in many years, from Oshogatsu, Haru Matsuri, Bazaar, Kamp Kodomo and Natsu Matsuri earlier in the year through to the 6th annual Road to Asia Festival last month. The challenges continue to mount as well. We have started the design of Phase 3 second floor but funding that growth remains a question mark. Operational funding has been bolstered by corporate and Trillium Foundation monies; however, these remain short-term solutions. New partnerships and the growth of the JCCC foundation are essential to long-term sustainability. This October the JCCC hosted the National Association of Japanese Canadians’ Annual General Meeting. It was a great event attended by many of the leading figures from Japanese Canadian communities across the country. What we heard repeatedly that weekend was how impressed they were by the Centre - both by the facility itself and the incredible level of activity here. Their kind comments were hugely gratifying and a testament to all the hard work invested in the JCCC by four generations of Nikkei since the 1950s. I hope these kind words be a great source of encouragement and pride for the Toronto community. People, Japanese Canadian and otherwise, wonder how a small community could have created such an overwhelming cultural centre. The answer, of course, is simple. The JCCC is blessed with a multitude of selfless and inexhaustible volunteers, an active membership and community, a committed board of directors and a dedicated staff. To offer mere words of thanks seems profoundly insufficient. Finally I want more than anything to offer my sincere thanks to you the community for giving me the chance to be a part of the

Centre again for this, my sixth year. You have given me my dream job. It is an honour and I am trying my best to make sure that I (and the JCCC) serve the community in the manner it deserves. I wish you a Merry Christmas, a Happy Holiday and a Wonderful 2007. Yoi otoshi o omukae kudasai. Rainen mo yoroshiku onegai itashimasu.

With warmest regards,James Heron

PrESIDENT MarTY KOBaYaSHI’S HOlIDaY MESSaGE

We are nearing the end of another exciting year in the Centre’s long and illustrious history. It has been another banner year, with an ever-increasing membership base, continued success with our annual events and many new additions to our activities and programs. We are in our final phase of expansion to build the Community Floor on the second level of the JCCC – construction is set to begin next summer if we can raise the final $1.3 million. Let’s all pitch in! It was a great year but also a sad one. I went to pay my respects to many key community members – people who epitomized the volunteer spirit on which the JCCC was built. Their friendship and support will be deeply missed. I wish they could still be with us to see the activity that continues to grow in their JCCC. This is part of their legacy and one which I’m sure everyone at the Centre feels a great desire to carry on. Another challenge we face is to draw new members to the Centre. There are still members of the community that are not JCCC members and even some regular users of the Centre who do not hold memberships. We are a family and as such, we all have a responsibility to help pay for our home. Membership is the best way to do this. Of course, if you’re reading this you’re already a member. I hope you’ll help convince others to join too. The successes we have achieved over the past 44 years are directly attributable to the tireless efforts of our volunteers and donors at all levels of the organization. We are very grateful to have such a large and diverse group of people, corporations, organizations and groups willing to help to spread “Friendship through Culture”. It is not only our motto, but also the basis for our success. We have always been accessible to everyone and inclusive in our membership and programs. We continue to open our arms and welcome everyone to our Centre. At this festive time of the year, I would like to take this opportunity to give our heartfelt thanks to all of our volunteers, donors, members and friends past and present who have given so generously to help create and sustain our vibrant and exciting Cultural Centre. May each and every one of you enjoy the warmth and love which comes from being with friends and family during the holiday season. Wishing you all the best of health and happiness in 2007!

MOvIE NITEKaMOME SHOKUDO: THE SEaGUll Café

A Japanese woman opens a café in Finland in this delicious little confection from director Naoko Ogigami

Last month a group of Japanese film buffs approached us with a request: “Do you know if Kamome Shokudo is available? It’s a lovely little movie that was quite popular in Japan. We think it might be an enjoyable film for your audience.” Well, we took their recommendation seriously and now it is our pick for January movie night.

Kamome Shokudo is based on the originally-written story by popular novelist Yoko Mure, director and screenplay by Naoko Ogigami, and starring Satomi Kobayashi, Hairi Katagiri and Masako Motai - an all women team from Japan, together with Fins Markku Peltola and Jarkko Niemi. The story depicts a gentle-paced and heart-warming adventure of a Japanese woman who opens a small

restaurant in Helsinki by herself, and the people around her. Kamome Shokudo is the type of film that defies easy categorization. Director Naoko Ogigami’s tasty 2006 offering is seasoned with plenty of humorous moments, but it isn’t really a comedy. And while the main thrust of the picture deals with a trio of female characters, it’s not necessarily a “woman’s picture” per se. And although the movie tends to veer away from mainstream sensibilities and even contains some surrealistic elements towards the end, it doesn’t feel like an art film either. But even if proper classification remains elusive in terms of the film’s genre, a judgment of its quality isn’t quite so hard to come by. Subtle and inescapably charming, Kamome Shokudo is the cinematic equivalent of a minor epiphany - small in scope, but no less revelatory. In Japanese with English subtitles.

lEvEllING THE PlaYING fIElD: aSaHI BaSEBall TEaM ExHIBITION

January 11 - March 31, 2007 in the GallerySponsored by the JCCC Heritage Committee

Opening ceremony: Thursday January 11, 2007 at 7:00pmThe Heritage Committee is pleased to invite you to the opening ceremony of the exhibition honouring the legendary Asahi Baseball Team who overcame inequality in the 1920s and 1930s with their brand of ‘brainball’. The Asahi won loyal fans across the city and instilled a sense of pride in Japanese Canadians. Their home ballpark was in Vancouver at the Powell Street grounds, at the heart of the community’s urban centre. The Asahi dynasty came to a halt in 1942 when they were relocated with others of Japanese descent to internment camps. For the Nikkei, they were heroes of their era. The Asahi baseball team was inducted to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 and in their hometown B.C. Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. The exhibition is curated by Grace Eiko Thomson. Please join us in opening this spectacular exhibit on Thursday January 11, 2007 at 7:00pm. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. Please R.S.V.P. to the JCCC reception desk 416-441-2345 ext.222.

THE rOaD TO aSIa 2006 THIS fESTIval JUST KEEPS GrOWING!

Like all the JCCC festivals and traditional events this year, our Autumn Festival eclipsed its predecessors as the biggest success in years! This past November 4 and 5, the JCCC once again found itself at the centre of the Asian-Canadian community as 12 countries converged on 6 Garamond Court for the sixth annual Road to Asia Festival. The festival’s opening ceremonies kicked off with the Chinese Waist Drummers, dancers from Indonesia and words of greeting from then City Councillor Jane Pitfield. And that was just the beginning - among the constant flow of activities were Tibetan music, demonstrations of Chinese martial arts, Ninjitsu and martial arts of the Philippines, as well as dancers of all types: Indonesian, Taiwanese, Laotian, Indian, and Sri Lankan. Naturally, Japan was well represented through - among others things - odori, music, traditional arts, martial arts and food. Visitors also had a chance to try Taiwanese, Sri Lankan, Indian and Chinese delicacies. The JCCC’s own Donburi and Takoyaki booth was a big favourite, including a newly created dish called “Canada-yaki!”. In his opening address, President Marty Kobayashi called the Road to Asia perhaps the ultimate manifestation of the JCCC’s motto, “Friendship Through Culture”. Few visitors to the festival would have disagreed. The JCCC thanks Chairperson Jim Ura and his staff and volunteers for all their hard work. The Road to Asia gets bigger and better every year. We look forward to meeting new friends on that road again in 2007.

JCCC BENEfIT SHOW fEaTUrING TaK YOSHIDa a HUGE HIT!

Expectations prior to Tak Yoshida’s October 21 JCCC benefit dinner show were incredibly high. However Tak, being Tak, blew those expectations away with an absolute tour-de-force performance. Combining skill, charisma and charm, Tak performed both Japanese and Western numbers in his usual inimitable style. Pianist Ena Matsuura, percussionist Fumio Tamiya, and flutists Hiromi Goto and Mari Nakagawa provided great backing and excelled in their own solo pieces. The evening was opened with a stirring performance by Yakudo.

One of the evening’s highlights was Tak’s duet with the talented Ins Choi (who happens to be his son-in-law!). It also goes without saying that Toriichi’s food was magnificent! Tak presented cheques in support of the JCCC and Kendo Team Canada. The JCCC would like to offer our most sincere thanks to Tak for sharing his talent and his generosity in what was an unforgettable evening. It was a great night.

SWOrD fOrGING DEMONSTraTION a GrEaT SUCCESS

Over seventy people braved the elements to view the first ever sword forging demonstration at the Centre conducted by sword master Kiyoto and his apprentice Pierre Nadeau. The event began at 9:30 am with workshops on sword handle wrapping by David Pepper (Okame Antiques, Windsor) and a sword restoration

workshop by Doug Blain. The Iaido Club led by Sensei Ohmi and Jorgenson put on an exceptional demonstration of kata and tamegishiri (sword cutting). After a lecture on the making of a Japanese sword, Kiyota sensei applied a slurry mixture onto to a blade and in the blustery weather in the Kobayashi Garden, plunged the sword into the temporary forge, quenched and roughly polished the blade to show the initial temperline. Apologies are extended to many interested people who were turned away for this unique appearance and plans are already underway for another extended visit next year. Thanks go to the Heritage Committee, Iaido Club and the JCCC Token Kai for their support.

PrOMOTE a HEalTHY lIfE WITH YOGa By Haruko Ishihara

In the last 10 years yoga has become astonishingly popular and people carrying yoga mats are frequently seen in the city. As more people recognize yoga as “Good for body and mind”, more people are doing it. But what exactly are the health benefits of yoga? The many benefits of Yoga are best summarized as “balance”. Balance includes: - Physical balance such as left and right, top and bottom, front and back - Sense of physical and psychological balance - The body’s biological and chemical balance such as cholesterol and sodium levels, etc.Balance plays a crucial role in your health. Yoga works synergistically to maintain the proper balance between the body and the mind.

Physical Health from YogaYoga promotes the flexibility of your body through non-aggressive stretches and enables you to acquire a good posture as a part of your natural consciousness toward a “straight” spine. Yoga helps to relax tight muscles and tendons as well as strengthen muscles you don’t use in everyday life. The practice of yoga cannot be separated from breathing techniques. Since you concentrate on breathing with each posture, it enhances cardiovascular health and strengthens and normalizes the digestive system. Moreover, we can be energized as a result of increased endurance and stronger immune system that can be expected from practicing Yoga.

Spiritual and Emotional Health from YogaMany people probably know that Yoga practice promotes relaxation. Yoga practice can be helpful in the reduction of anxiety, stress and depression through emotional control during practice. Attentiveness and memory will be enhanced along with an increased level of concentration. You will face your ego and limitations during yoga practice. However, you are gradually able to accept truth and reality by developing flexibility and adaptability. This leads you to a positive and healthy life.

Let’s compare Yoga with regular exercises. The sympathetic nervous system is governed during cardio exercises and weight training. On the other hand, the parasympathetic nervous system that appears in relaxation mode is dominantly used in Yoga practice. In addition, it is worth mentioning that muscles and tendon injuries are dramatically low in Yoga. You will face only yourself in Yoga practice so there is no competitiveness involved and it promotes your peace of mind. Yoga is a healing art. You don’t need tools. You can practice wherever and whenever. Include Yoga in your regular routine for a happy, healthy and energetic life.

The Cranes TributeThe National Tribute to Japanese Canadian Life

1

The Cranes Tribute recognizes our past and draws futuregenerations to the JCCC to remember, to learn and tocelebrate.

For centuries the crane has been part of Japanese art andliterature. The crane is one of the most rare and beautifulsymbols in the world. In mythology, tancho is said to live for1,000 years. The crane is a symbol of happiness and good luck, thus it is widely used in artwork and on fabrics. It is fitting thatthe Japanese crane has been chosen as the symbol for thetribute to the Japanese Canadian community.

The Cranes Tribute is a tangible and visually beautiful way of bringing our community together across generations and across the country. We can remember our past and celebrate our future. To this end, I have reserved two Cranes to honour my maternal grandmother, Chizuru Marion Shigeta and my daughter Katherine Chizuru, linking our issei roots to our yonsei future. I hope Canadians everywhere will embrace The Cranes Tribute and support this important national campaign.

Connie Sugiyama

As the Crane Tribute takes flight, so too does the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. With this fundraising initiative, we are expanding and now realizing our vision – to be Canada’s cultural bridge to both modern and traditional Japan. Just as the crane migrates and returns to its homeland each spring, the JCCC is a place for Japanese Canadians to return home and regain their culture or learn about their heritage.

Over 418 families from across Canada and as far away as Japan have already recognized their families, ancestors, friends and mentors by making a dedication on the Cranes Tribute Wall. Each Crane represents a dedication to remember and remind future generations about the impact made on the Japanese Canadian community by its pioneers and its community builders. The Wall and its inscriptions have created a permanent memorial in the Shokokai Court at the JCCC -- attracting families, visitors and school groups to the Centre. The wall connects us with past leaders of the community and special family members.

When we launched the Cranes Tribute, it was my hope that the Japanese Canadian community would take the opportunity to pay respect to those who were so important to us. When I think back to all of the issei and nissei that made sacrifices for their families as well as for the community, through their tireless efforts -they deserve our appreciation. We are richer people and commu-nity because of them.

The sansei and yonsei should take this opportunity to pay respect to their parents and grandparents by creating a lasting legacy with a Cranes dedication.

With the recent passing of my wife Molly, I wanted to pay a lasting tribute to her memory. The Cranes Tribute is by far one of the most permanent reminders of a loved one.

The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s track record of programming for culture and heritage is always a good

investment. Thanks to recent tax changes, the option of making a donation of stocks directly to the JCCC provides the best tax advantage. You will not pay capital gains tax and will

receive a tax receipt for the full amount of your donation.Investing in our community’s culture and heritage issomething we should all do, and now there’s an even
