1845). Ao voltar, Gérôme expôs The
Cock-fight, terceiro lugar no Salon de 1847. The Virgin with Christ, St. John and Anacreon e Bacchus and
Cupid conseguiram um segundo lugar em 1848. Em 1851 apresentou Bacchus and Love, Drunk, A Greek Interior e
Souvenir d’Italie. An Idill foi apresentado em 1853.

A reputação de Gérôme foi grandemente intensificada no Salon de 1857 por uma coleção de trabalhos de um gênero mais popular: The Duel: after a Masquerade, Egyptian Recruits Crossing the Desert, Memnon and Sesostris e
CamelsWatering.
Phryne before the Areopagus, Le Roi Candaule e
Socrates Finding Alcibiades in the House of Aspasia (1861), deram motivo a algum escândalo em vista dos temas selecionados pelo pintor, que se viu alvo de ásperos ataques de Paul de Saint-Victor e Maxima Ducamps. Nessa
mesma exposição ele apresentou Egyptian Chopping Straw e Rembrandt Biting an Etching, dois trabalhos minuciosamente elaborados.

membro do Institut); The Slave Market (1867) e The Harem out Driving (1869).
Reception of the Siamese Ambassadors at Fontainebleau (1865) e The Death of Marshal Ney (1868).
Bonaparte Entering Cairo (1897); Tamerlane (1898) e Frederick the Great (1899).
