The endocrine system is a complex group of glands that helps to control reproduction, metabolism, growth and development through substances called hormones. It also controls

the way you respond to your surroundings and provides the proper amount of energy your

body needs to function. Sometimes the glands of the endocrine system are impaired and

can cause a hormone imbalance.San Jiao is located separately from the zang fu organs and inside body. It main functions

are to govern various forms of qi, and serve as the passage for the flow of yuan qi and body

fluid.Yuan qi originates in the Kidney, but requires the san jiao as its pathway for distribution in

order to stimulate and promote the functional activities of the zang fu organs and tissues of

the whole body.Yuan qi derived from congenital essense and needs to be supplemented and nourished bythe qi obtained after birth from food essence.

It stimulates and promotes the functional activities of the zang fu organs and the associated

tissues. The more abundant yuan qi, the more vigorously the zang fu organs and the

associated tissues will function. The human body will then be healthy and rarely suffer fromdisease.

These are similar to the definition of immunity nowdays.

An immune system is a collection of biological processes within an organism that protectsagainst disease by identifying and killing pathogens and tumour cells. It detects a wide

variety of agents, from viruses to parasitic worms, and needs to distinguish them from theorganism's own healthy cells and tissues in order to function properly.

Detection is complicated as pathogens can evolve rapidly, producing adaptations that avoid

the immune system and allow the pathogens to successfully infect their hosts.Disorders in the immune system can result in disease. Immunodeficiency diseases occur

when the immune system is less active than normal, resulting in recurring and life-

    threatening infections.

Immunodeficiency can either be the result of a genetic disease, such as severe combined

immunodeficiency, or be produced by pharmaceuticals or an infection, such as the acquired

immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) that is caused by the retrovirus HIV. In contrast,

autoimmune diseases result from a hyperactive immune system attacking normal tissues asif they were foreign organisms. Common autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis,

diabetes mellitus type 1 and lupus erythematosus. Immunology covers the study of allaspects of the immune system which has significant relevance to human health anddiseases. Further investigation in this field is expected to play a serious role in promotion of

    health and treatment of diseases.

So, we choose the points of SJ4 for tonifying yuan qi and SJ5 for protecting external evil qipromoting immune system paired with foot shao yang channle GB39.

Stress and immunity vs Jing and shenThe strategy an individual uses to cope with stress has in some studies shown a strong

relationship with the ability of the immunes system. In the case of cognitive-behavioralstress management therapies, there has been shown effective means at reducing stress. The ability to proactively handle how one deals with their stress in everyday life couldalleviate the constant activation of the endocrine system, which in turn increases the

effectiveness of the immune system (Jones, 2003).

Inhibition of emotions could be another stress factor negatively affecting health. Bottling up

negative emotions seems to tie up resources of the immune system. Individuals who

disclosed a tragic event seemed to have an elevated immune response and generally werehealthier than those who inhibited expression of these emotions. There is considerableevidence that talking about problems and using mental health services, decreases the

number of sick days, and lowers health costs for these individuals (O'Leary, 1990).

Using a coping strategy which involves a denial or assessing that a particular illness orstress is beyond the control of the individual can prove to be an ineffective strategy. The

person tries to escape reality, and refuses to use their social network to help deal with theirproblem. They believe that work requirements are more important than seeking therapy or

treatments. This strategy can have a tragic result on an individual (Jones, 2003).

In eastern culture, the brain is called "Jing shen" which is composed with Jing form Kidneyas Yin component and shen from Heart as a yang.

Without "Jing shen", it is a coma which is a serious condition that has nothing to do with

    sleep.

The 33 chapter of Miraculous Pivot says: " The brain is a sea of marrow."And the 17 chapter of Plain questions says': "The head is the residence of intelligence."

I believe that sprit and matter, jing and shen and stress and immunity are all sameconcepts for explaing by different languages.

Hormone disease and San jiao channel

Some students have the question why SJ6 treats for constipation even the location is the

    upper jiao.

Or, why SJ channel can treat ear illness and shoulder pain with GB channel. If patients have loose stool woth heat sign, or constipation with cold sign. Is it still cold and

    heat simulataneously?

If so, I would think about SJ and GB channel related with hormon imbalance. The endocrine system consists of several glands, in different parts of the body, that secretehormones directly into the blood rather than into a duct system. Hormones have many

different functions and modes of action; one hormone may have several effects on different

target organs, and, conversely, one target organ may be affected by more than one

hormone.Interestingly, if someone has hormone disharmony, water metabolism either hyper

or hypo is easily involved in key symptoms. And a competing theory is that the age-related decline in hormone levels represents aprotective slowing down of cellular metabolism. This concept is based on the rate of living

theory of aging (ie, the faster the metabolic rate of an organism, the quicker it dies). This

concept is seemingly supported by studies on the effects of dietary restriction. Restrictiondecreases levels of hormones that stimulate metabolism, thereby slowing metabolic rate;this prolongs life in rodents.

Kidney opens into the ear. When yuan qi of kidney is sufficient, the ear is well nourishedand hearing is acute. When the essential qi of the kidney is deficient, it will fail to ascend tothe ear leading to tinnitus and deafness.

That's why we choose the SJ channel for ear dysfunction related with kidney, the GB pointsfor Liver realted ear problem.

    Circadian rhythms and TCM clock

Circadian rhythms are regular changes in mental and physical characteristics that occur inthe course of a day (circadian is Latin for "around a day"). Most circadian rhythms are

controlled by the bodys biological "clock." This clock, called the suprachiasmatic nucleus or

SCN, is actually a pair of pinhead-sized brain structures that together contain about 20,000neurons. The SCN rests in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, just above the point

where the optic nerves cross. Light that reaches photoreceptors in the retina (a tissue at the

back of the eye) creates signals that travel along the optic nerve to the SCN.Signals from the SCN travel to several brain regions, including the pineal gland, whichresponds to light-induced signals by switching off production of the hormone melatonin. The

bodys level of melatonin normally increases after darkness falls, making people feel drowsy.

The SCN also governs functions that are synchronized with the sleep/wake cycle, includingbody temperature, hormone secretion, urine production, and changes in blood pressure.By depriving people of light and other external time cues, scientists have learned that most

peoples biological clocks work on a 25-hour cycle rather than a 24-hour one. But becausesunlight or other bright lights can reset the SCN, our biological cycles normally follow the

24-hour cycle of the sun, rather than our innate cycle. Circadian rhythms can be affected tosome degree by almost any kind of external time cue, such as the beeping of your alarmclock, the clatter of a garbage truck, or the timing of your meals. Scientists call externaltime cues zeitgebers (German for "time givers").

Comparing with 2 clocks, San Jiao channel starts 21:00 pm same as Melatonin secretion

starts.Melatonin is a hormone produced in the brain by the pineal gland from the amino acid

tryptophan. The synthesis and release of melatonin are stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light,

suggesting the involvement of melatonin in circadian rhythm and regulation of diverse bodyfunctions. Levels of melatonin in the blood are highest prior to bedtime.

Melatonin also helps control the timing and release of female reproductive hormones. It

helps determine when menstruation begins, the frequency and duration of menstrual cycles,

and when menstruation ends (menopause). Many researchers also believe that melatonin levels are related to the aging process. For

example, young children have the highest levels of nighttime melatonin. Researchers

believe these levels diminish as we age. In fact, the decline in melatonin may explain whymany older adults have disrupted sleep patterns and tend to go to bed and wake up earlierthan when they were younger. However, emerging research calls this theory into question.

In addition to its hormonal actions, melatonin has strong antioxidant effects. Preliminary

evidence suggests that it may help strengthen the immune system.

Following the abstraction of Effects of sleep and sleep loss on immunity and cytokines.

Brain Behav Immun 2002;16(5):503-12.Sleep is hypothesized to be a restorative process that is important for the proper functioning

of the immune system. Severity of disordered sleep in depressed- and alcoholic subjectscorrelates with declines in natural- and cellular immunity and is associated with alterationsin the complex cytokine network. Sleep loss has a role in mediating these immune changes

as experimentally induced partial night sleep deprivation replicates the kind of sleep loss

found in clinical samples and induces a pattern of immune alterations similar to that foundin depressed- and alcoholic patients. Despite evidence that sleep and sleep loss have effects

on immune processes and nocturnal secretion of cytokines, the clinical significance of these

immune changes is not known. Moreover, in view of basic evidence of a reciprocal

interaction between sleep and cytokines, further research is needed to understand whetheralterations in cytokines contribute to disordered sleep in patient populations.

So, we recommand going bed before 11:00PM for good immunity to patients. That's thetime to start San Jiao channel.

    San Jiao channel and herbs

The herbs entering into san Jiao channel are zhi zi, chuan xiong, chai hu, xiang fu and mu

    xiang.

Korean medical publisher said that chuan xiong has the immune strengthen function in new

research and they use it as a new medicine for cancer patients with dang gui and bai shao. For atopic autoimmune disease, Huang lian jie du tang which includes with zhi zi is used byKTM doctors.

Xiao chai hu tang is known to help improve liver function, to help reduce liver enzymes, aidsto enhance immunity, and aid in clearing residual pathogens and parasites.
