Tips for Safe Summer Fun from AtlantiCare Urgent Care Centers

IN THE HEAT• In excessive heat, limit time outdoors. Try to stay indoors in air conditioning. • Check on elderly neighbors and relatives who live alone.• Wear light-colored and lightweight clothing on hot days to help keep your body cool.• Keep your vehicle locked so it does not become a temptation for a child to play inside, exposing him or her to entrapment/heat exposure.

ON THE WATER• Only swim in lifeguard-protected waters. Teach children to follow lifeguards’ directions.• Use the “buddy” system when swimming in pools or the ocean. Refrain from swimming alone.• Do not dive into shallow water.

IN THE SUN• Use sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher with UVA and UVB protection, even if it’s overcast outside. Reapply sunscreen every two hours and after sweating or swimming. • Avoid direct sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when skin- damaging rays are strongest. • Drink plenty of water, especially if you’re in the heat for long periods.

For more informationabout AtlantiCareUrgent Care Centers• Visit www.atlanticare.org/urgent or www.atlanticarewell4life.org• Call the AtlantiCare Access Center at 1-888-569-1000• Find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AtlantiCare

Warm weather and sunny skies are great motivators to get outside and enjoy fun summer activities with friends and family. But make sure that you take adequate precautions to

protect yourself from the common hazards of summer living that can spoil your outdoor fun. AtlantiCare Urgent Care reminds you that having a great summer alsoincludes keeping everyone in your family safe from accidental injuries.

When we decided to start a new Feature-recognizing ‘Kids Making a Difference in our Community’, we didn’t have to look too far.

Burlington County best buddies, Emma Bowers and Nina Burden were just in fifth grade when they began their quest to ‘Sprinkle a little. Share a lot!’

What started as a hobby of baking cupcakes for their friends and families quickly grew into sharing their home baked treats with others. To date, they have baked over 40,000 cupcakes-

and collected in excess of $15k in monetary donations for many area causes. Impressive by any standards, but especially so, given that these young visionaries haven’t reached high school age yet.

Friends since kindergarten, Emma and Nina wanted to make a difference and share some simple acts of kindness. In 2012, while many Jersey Shore residents were evacuating from Superstorm Sandy to their area, the girls were busy baking hundreds of cupcakes in their families’ residential ovens. The first 400 went to temporary shelters-the following 500 to the troops deployed on the coastal islands. A big task for the young friends, but only the beginning of their committed causes. They’ve shared their cupcakes with nursing homes, food pantries, blood drives, churches and as a thank you to tired emergency, relief and utility workers. Helping them to succeed in spreading these ‘seeds of kindness’ include the Pennsylvania Kiwanis Foundation for the generous donation of ingredients and their local vocational school for use of their industrial ovens. Follow Operation Cupcakes’ progress at www.facebook.com/OperationCupcakeNJ

In November 2013, the efforts of these dedicated young ladies were acknowledged by Hometown Heroes, when they were awarded a partnership as a non profit organization. Now formally recognized for their giving spirit, ‘Operation Cupcake’ continues to inspire-one cupcake at a time.
