MARCH 2012 Port Clinton Yacht Club JIB SHEET a pilates/yoga class offered by certified instructor Toni Garrett. The class is scheduled to be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 67 in the ballroom. If interested or you have questions, Toni can be contacted at 4193411610 or by email at [email protected] . Questions can also be directed to Facilities Manager PC Chuck Reichman at 6149897224. As stated in last month’s Jib Sheet, if you know of someone who may be interested in Club membership, please invite them to an event and/ or a meeting can be arranged with PC Reichman and myself to answer questions and provide a tour of the facilities. Maintaining membership is important as the Planning Committee and the Board considers current and future Club improvements. March events include the Men’s Stag on the 7 th , the St. Patrick’s Day Bar Party on the 17 th , the Junior Sail Fundraiser Dinner (Fish Fry) on the 23 rd , March Madness Snacks on the 24 th and the ever popular Friday Night Snacks on the 2 nd and 30 th . Hope to see you at one or more of these events. With March upon us, spring must be right around the corner! Spring training is underway, March Madness begins, and in another month, boats start appearing in the marina. Dock Chairperson Phil Bolte is finalizing dock assignments for the 2012 season. It is anticipated that the marina will be full once again and Phil is working hard to address the members’ needs. Work on the pedestals will also continue as the Board has approved the acquisition of seventeen new pedestals, which will be installed on the outside of the marina around the north and east sides. The intent, weather permitting, is to have the installation completed before the marina opens. Pool improvements are also being considered, including fencing and new pool furniture. Applications are available at the bar for those who are interested in applying for attendant or lifeguard positions. The completed applications need to be returned to the bar or sent to Renee Stine by March 16. Currently the trees are being trimmed and the Board has approved spraying for the Cottony Maple Scale disease. Inside the clubhouse, work has begun in the ladies restroom. Mark Hudak and others are removing the existing floor tile and carpeting, and a new floor tile will be installed along with other improvements. The Social Committee, chaired by Doug and Candace Shealy, has been working hard to complete the social calendar and yearbook. The task is nearing completion and the book should be available this coming April. The other committee members are Bob and Terri Mosser and Pat and Angie Reineck. Talking about April, please be advised of two changes to the April social calendar. First, with Easter being April 8, the Children’s Easter Party has been changed from Saturday, April 21 to Saturday, April 7. Second, the Spring Work Party originally scheduled for April 15 has been moved to April 21. To promote a healthy mind and a healthy body, the Board approved “Yogalites”, From the COMMODORE Rear Perspective Five years ago at this time I would sit on the rooftop of my dental clinic in Baghdad and eat my lunch. The clinic was located in one of Saddam's hunting lodges near BIAP(Baghdad International Airport) on a now extinct hunting preserve. There was still hunting going on but not for animals. I had a great vantage point that looked out over a series of man made lakes toward Baghdad. I could watch constant helicopter traffic, the occasional high altitude fighter aircraft, the incoming rocket rounds (that caused for a quick exit), and the smoke from intentional ordinance disposal (that would cause the EPA to have a fit), or from IED explosions. When I returned to my quarters that evening I could turn on CNN and find out what had caused the smoke. We had a pretty good idea where the next attack would be the next day based on the information and prompting provided to us and the enemy by our news media. I once asked one of the medics why no one else ate lunch on the roof top balcony. He in- formed me that occasional stray AK-47 rounds would hit the building, and that no one was going to tell a Colonel where he could eat his lunch. This brings me to memories. While in Iraq, I missed my freshman daughter's swim season, (she learned to swim at PCYC), her trip to Districts, her second varsity letter, her winter sports awards banquet, and her heart surgery. The smoke reminded me of the burning trash fires at the old city dump down the lake shore by the Admiralty Condominiums. The lakes of course reminded me of Lake Erie and what used to go on in March at PCYC. This time of year the ice skating contingent would turn in their skates for ice climbing equipment. With warming temperatures and the right wind conditions, the ice would be blown to the shoreline and form massive mountains of ice. The older members will tell of the time when the ice was pushed across Lake Shore Drive. We are still waiting for the ice to crush the Waterfront Condos. Our goal was to explore and map out pathways over narrow isthmuses to the farthest island of ice. We considered the day a complete success if we could get back to shore dry. That never happened. I had my brothers hand me down black rubber boots with metal clips. They all had holes in them and quickly filled with water. If someone had good boots they always seemed to get accidentally pushed into icy cold lake. We would run to the clubhouse and take hot showers which at that time were located in the current bathrooms. The caretaker was not happy with us. Usually in the winter he only had to clean the bathrooms. Now he had to dry the wet shower stalls which he usually did not have to clean until May. By the way- join the new/old PCYC skating team as the PCYC rifle team on the Air Rifle range at Camp Perry on Tuesdays 5:30 -8:00. Projects- We are still working on them. I am updating my volunteer list. This is a working club and we keep our costs low by doing as much work with volunteer labor by our members as possible. Please let me know your skills and interests and when you can help out. Thank you!!! Boaters- Launch time is quickly approaching. Committees-This time of year the Social Committee is hard at work planning next year's calendar and assigning members to committees as required by our club constitution. There are two club calendar years. The membership calendar year is from Jan 1 to Dec 31. The social calendar year is from May 1 to Apr 31. We do not have our updated membership roster till dues are paid on Dec 31. The com- mittee assignments for Jan-Apr 2012 actually come from the 2011 membership list. You could be on two committees in 2012 which actually covers your obliga- tion for 2011 and 2012. You may serve on as many functions as you desire. Take a look at all the members who volunteer for additional "work" committees found on page one of the yearbook. These members serve on these committees in addi- tion to their social committee assignments. One of the hardest working committees is the riser committee which is already planning installation of risers in March or early April. This is a highly skilled and well trained unit. You may apply for membership to this elite group by contacting the chairman: Todd Warnike. I have been told my articles are causing disharmony in families. They are good bathroom reading material and due to their excessive length are taking up chair time. I will try to be less verbose in the future, but at 3:00am on deadline day I tend to lose my concentration. Rear Commodore Michael Hablitzel 3/24
