    Introduction

Test applications for compatibility and mitigate thecompatibility issues discovered during the process.

Set up an initial lab environment with deployment and

imaging servers. Customize and package applications.

Automate desktop image creation and deployment.

Ensure that the desktop is hardened to improve

security within the environment. Manage processes and technologies to produce a

    comprehensive and integrated deployment.

    New In BDD

BDD 2007 also introduces the new Deployment Workbench, whichenables users to build and manage multiple OS configurations, define network deployment points and network shares, injectdrivers, attach language packs, and chain applications.

It even helps generate ISO and WIM images using Windows PE thatcan be deployed in a networked environment or using DVDs offline.

BDD 2007 also alleviates much of the scripting requirements ofprevious BDD versions by incorporating a stand-alone tasksequencer derived from System Center Configuration Manager2007.

BDD continues to offer the flexibility for Zero Touch Installation withSystems Management Server 2003 and Lite Touch Installation withminimal infrastructure requirements.

    System Requirements

    Lite Touch

A LAN with at least one server and sufficient diskspace to store working files and images

Servers: Windows Server 2003 with WindowsDeployment services (Windows DS) and ActiveDirectory

Client OS: Windows Vista Business, Professional,Ultimate or Windows XP Professional

Productivity Suites: Office Professional, ProfessionalPlus, Enterprise, and Ultimate 2007, Microsoft OfficeProfessional 2003 Edition

    Zero Touch Installation (ZTI)

    9/15

    Zero Touch

    Injects drivers during installation

Less man hours to setup new computers

    Requires more infrastructure

    Hard on low speed networks

    10/15

    Lite Touch Installation

    Injects drivers during installation

    Requires more interaction

    More control of network load

    Windows Vista

Is the best practice guidance on how to

optimally deploy Vista (at least according to

    Microsoft)

Built in functionality to maintain patches in

    BDD (under OS packages)

    Vista exclusively uses XML-based unattended-

    setup answer files.

    12/15

    Windows XP

    BDD more streamlined for Vista

When deployed with sysprepped images or PEcould result in the dreaded uberbug

Uberbug doesn't allow windows to enter graphicalpart of windows installation.

Cannot use built in OS patching

Two options for patching windows XP

    Build patches into programs

Inject patches directly into source files

    Image information

Two types of images created in BDD

    Thin Image

    Base image no extras

    Smaller image

    Thick image

    Roll applications into deployment image

    Larger image

If you want to change an app in image have to recreate

    image

    Windows Pre-installation Environment

    (PE 2.0)

Microsoft Windows Pre-installation Environment(Windows PE) 2.0 is a bootable tool fromMicrosoft that provides operating system

features for installation, troubleshooting, andrecovery. Windows PE is not a general-purposeoperating system. Instead, it is designed to beused for three specific tasks

Used for booting computer to start imagedeployment

With BDD can inject drivers into PE

What we plan to use it for

Automate computer setups and much aspossible without going as far as zero touchinstallation.

Insure uniform base line installation ofcomputers

Originally was going to use to be used for XP

and Vista Not sure about XP because of patching

Will be used for deploying Vista
