Biography  Where is he from? • John Henry Holland,  (born February 2, 1929, Fort Wayne, Indiana,

U.S.) and raised in western Ohio.

Biography Where did he go to school? •  He study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then entered

the graduate school in communication science at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor

• Professor Holland was made a MacArthur fellow in 1992 and is a fellow of the World Economic Forum. He serves on the Advisory Board on Complexity at the McDonnell Foundation.

Biography What did he study?

• John Henry Holland study science and Psychology to be Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan. He is a pioneer in complex system and nonlinear science. He is known as the father of genetic algorithms.

Biography What did he achieve?• In 1950 Holland received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from

the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  • he University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he received his

doctorate in 1954—arguably the first Ph.D. in computer science.

His Work

• Holland frequently lectures around the world on his own research, and on current research and open questions in complex adaptive systems (CAS) studies. In 1975 he wrote the ground-breaking book on genetic algorithms, "Adaptation in Natural and Artificial Systems". He also developed Holland's schema theorem.

CAS• Professor Holland has been interested

for more than 40 years in what are now called complex adaptive systems (CAS). He formulated genetic algorithms, classifier systems, and the Echo models as tools for studying the dynamics of such systems. His books Hidden Order (1995) and Emergence (1998) summarize many of his thoughts about complex adaptive systems.

• John Henry Holland was a name I remember hearing , but i have never thought he was a famous Computer Scientist, His work seem really interesting although i have never heard of them before. I think that what he accomplish in science is really useful and perhaps i will use it when i grow older in higher grades at school. I might read one of his books to learn more about all the amount of information in the science of the Computers.
