Why isn’t generic medicine cheaper? 3

The fourth Eastern Cape Communal Wool Growers’ Association congress will be held on 3 September at the Nosimo shearing shed near Stutterheim. This congress is one of the highlights on the calendar of communal farm-ers. The theme is Utshintsho olumandla ku Phuhliso Mfuyo, which means “radical change in the development of livestock”. The congress will focus on the latest development trends as well as an outlook on communal farming.

NWGA members posed questions on biosecurity and animal health matters. A member from the Eastern Cape asked:

“In human medicine the use of generics is common place and can sometimes be 50% cheaper than the original. However, in animal medicine, the generics are approximately 10% less. I have challenged local representatives from large pharmaceutical companies and they either don’t know what to say or say the generics are inferior. A generic is supposed to be an exact copy of the original. My question: Why are generics in animal medicine not vastly cheaper? Who is holding this back?”

Dr Gerhard Verdoorn, consultant for SA Animal Health Association (SAHAA), replied:“Government imposed certain sanctions on human medicine to make it more affordable and accessible. This

means the Department of Health stipulates a single exit price and hence generics are much cheaper than research-based medicines. In the case of animal health medicine, the state has imposed no single exit-price strategy and thus generic companies are not under any obligation to sell their products at much lower prices than research-based products. What the public must also understand is that generic animal health medicines need to undergo very rigorous development and testing before they can be registered. This means such products are not necessarily cheaper to develop than research-based medicines. The cost of developing and testing such products is very high; therefore, one cannot expect such products to be much cheaper than research-based products.”

Shearing sheds destined for Umzimkhulu 4“The farmers are well organised in wool grow-er associations and have quality leadership like SJ Jaca, chairperson and NP Ndzimande, vice-chairperson,” according to Leon de Beer, NWGA general manager. He attended the sixth congress of the Umzimkhulu Wool Grow-ers, which took place on 9 July at the Lourdes shearing shed. Approximately 200 farmers engaged in high-level discussions addressing resolutions relating to the ram project, prob-lem animals, stock and wool theft as well as infrastructure, which is the main concern in the area. It is unfortunate that many departments were not present to respond to the resolutions.

Theo van Rooyen confirmed, on behalf of the MEC, the finalisation of a memorandum of understanding between the NWGA and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, as well as the construction of four shearing sheds in Umzimkhulu for the coming year. He also encouraged farmers to apply for funding for the genetic improvement of their flocks.

NWKV skitter in hul teenwoordigheid by Kirkwood-fees

While winter is setting in, the nu-tritional value of grazing in many areas is poor. Animals are losing condition and immune levels are

dropping. Supplementary nutrition should be given in time to prevent animals from losing too much condi-tion, as this will lead to disease, lower conception rates, resorptions and abortions. On many farms, animals graze in meadows and farmers should be aware of liver and conical fluke infestations.

Trichomoniasis is causing serious reproduction losses and controlling bovine brucellosis requires all our at-tention to control this terrible disease! Contact your veterinarian to help you update your vaccination and management programmes for production animals.

The wool shop of the Free State Wool Growers achieved record sales in the 2014/15 financial year, clos-ing at just under R370 000. The shop diversified its product range in the last quarter of the financial year to include new products, including Karoo Moon knitting yarn, knitting accessories, baby accessories, scarves and headbands of 100% wool, as well as the Konsortium-Merino jacket range. All new products performed well. The shop continues to stock traditional items, such as woollen slippers, 100% wool and

wool-blend spencers, woollen jerseys and du-vets, and Falke socks.

The shop expanded its marketing strategy to include social media with a Facebook page. The shop expanded its display area at its flag-ship outlet, Nampo, and generated a turnover of R251 000 over the four-day show period. The shop participated in a variety of shows throughout the Free State in the 2015/16 fi-nancial year and has sourced more new prod-ucts, including ladies’ woollen jackets and 100% wool blankets.

Members of the Group Breeding Scheme (GBS) have been breeding quality rams for distribution to com-munal farmers since 2002. The GBS was established in 1972 with the exclusive goal to breed wool sheep that is well adapted to the environment and condi-tions of the north-eastern Cape. The group met with the NWGA in July 2015 to plan the next phase of the project, which is funded by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform.

Izak Klopper, bestuurder: Skeederopleiding, wil ’n beginners-skeerkursus aanbied.

NWGA production advisor XL Nyamela organised an information day at Vukuzenzele for wool growers of Matatiele. It included a demonstration of a post-mortem, conducted by Dr Mushiriwa, state veterinarian from the Matatiele Local Municipality. He urged farmers not to conduct post-mortems themselves because of con-tagious diseases that might affect humans.

The purpose of the demonstration was to illustrate how an animal is divided and examined in different sec-tions during a post-mortem in order to identify unhealthy conditions.

Talitha Pharma assisted farmers with animal health matters. Nonjinji from the Vukuzenzele wool growers donated the sheep for the demonstration.

Following a visit from NWGA chairman Guillau du Toit to OBP, Dr Jacob Modumo con-firmed in a letter to the NWGA, dated 23 July 2015, that OBP has enough units (about 40 000) bluetongue A, B and C vaccines. “This is currently being packed for distribution.” He further stated that an estimated 13 000 units should follow the following week and more units in subsequent weeks.
