North Divide News By Berdean Wilkinson Rally for Religious Freedom — Continued from Page 1 draw only in the hundreds, though anti-abortion groups have mustered larger crowds.” Brownback said freedom was a gift, not a privilege that the government may take away when it pleases. “This unconscionable mandate must not be al- lowed to stand,” Brownback said. “By your prayers and work, it will not be allowed to stand.” Keynote speaker Cathy Ruse, senior fellow for legal studies at the Family Re- search Council, said the “war on women” is a con- trived political tool to di- minish religious freedom. “Put America on the pill and send the Catholics the bill,” she said was the pres- ident’s agenda. “Is there a crisis in the availability of contracep- tives for women in Amer- ica?” she asked. “No. Anyone who wants contra- ceptives can buy them. The Obama administration’s hidden mandate is abor- tion.” Before the end of the rally, those in attendance were urged to support reli- gious freedom by texting FREEDOM to 377377. Naomi Reeh, 20, attended the rally, riding on the Tri- Parish bus. She shared the experience with her mom, Jolene. The Reeh family at- tends St. John’s Church. “The rally was such a moving experience,” Naomi said. “It was great to be able to stand up for the cause of religious freedom for our country.” Naomi will be starting her third year at Benedic- tine College this fall. She is studying elementary educa- tion and theology. She plans to continue to be involved in the pursuit of religious free- dom. “I’ve already signed some online petitions in continued support of the stand for freedom,” she said. “I also plan to write to our senators and other offi- cials about the issue.” Sacred Heart Church parishioner Pat Skolout said she was impressed by the number of young peo- ple, including small chil- dren, attending. “I thought [the rally] was great,” she said. “I was im- pressed and inspired. I en- joyed the speakers.” Pat said that she was glad she attended even though the weather was very hot. Also catching a ride on the bus was Don Antholz of Atwood, who attends Courts of Praise Church. “It was well worth it [to attend],” he said. “I’m really glad that I went.” “I was proud of the show- ing from Rawlins County,” Fr. Nick said. “ In such a rare and unprecedented time we’re in with this man- date, the rally provided an important platform to ex- press our opinions.” St. Mary’s parishioner Ron Beims agreed. “The rally showed that a lot of people were con- cerned with the obvious government infringement on the freedom of people to practice their religion,” he said. “This was an opportu- nity to stand up and be heard. You have to stand up and be counted and say, ‘Hey, that’s enough.’” Beims said he was im- pressed with the number of Rawlins County people who attended the rally. “We had solidarity in showing our concerns,” he said. Chartering a bus to take area participants to the rally was originated at an Atwood Knights of Colum- bus meeting. Sacred Heart parish paid for the bus and received donations from the Knights of Columbus, the Tri-Parish's Christian Mothers Altar Society groups, First Catholic Slovik Ladies Association and a number of individual, according to Fr. Nick.
