Australia would not be the great and prosperous country it is today, if it were not for the contribution migrants

have and continue to make for Australias benefit, says National President of the Migration Institute of Australia, Angela Chan FMIA. Ms Chans comments come after Federal Member for Dawson, George Christiensen MP made a speech to Parliament in which he claimed multiculturalism had failed Australia.Mr Christiensen c o n f u s e s multiculturalism with alleged criminal acts by the Muslim community, in his speech to Parliament earlier this week. Alleging that multiculturalism has failed us because Australians now have to respect sharia law practices, child brides and female genital mutilation from migrants who are Muslim is not only factually incorrect but also forgetting the incredible importance multiculturalism brings to our society, said Ms Chan. Ms Chan also noted criminal and anti-democratic acts were not supported by Australians, whether they be from a migrant background or not and the full force of the law should be applied to any Australian found to be breaking the law.

Migrants have played an integral part of shaping our history and the identity of our nation. You only need to look on the streets of our cities to see that todays Australia is truly representative of a variety of ethnicities, who all manage to live in a harmonious way. To believe that ethnic food and dancing will sustain the richness of our multicultural society is nave. Migrants will also be looked at as a solution to our future challenges

    including an ageing population, attracting offshore investment to further strengthen the economy and to continue trade relations throughout the world, said Ms Chan. A u s t r a l i a s immigration and multiculturalism p r o g r a m m e s remain an

important issue for the entire country to discuss and develop. To help facilitate this, the Migration Institute of Australia will be hosting Rethinking Migration Community Forum on Saturday 20 June at Sydney Town Hall, where the future of Australias migration needs will be discussed through a community dialogue. For more information about Rethinking Migration Community Forum, visit the MIA website www.mia.org.au

In my family theres a little car, a beige Atos, more than a decade old, thats a bit dented here and there. My

husband and I acquired it some time ago, as backup for when our kids needed to practice driving before getting their drivers license. Over time, my daughter inherited the Atos so she could drive safely to and from the hospital, where she had her clinical training. After my daughter graduated, my husband and I thought it would be good to sell the Atos. For some inexplicable reason though, the little car broke down, time and again. It was either the battery, the engine, water flow, or some other kind of problem that kept us calling the mechanic over and over again. It dawned upon my husband and I that it would not be a good idea to sell the car after all. On the outside, the Atos didnt look too bad. But any buyer would be disappointed and worse, feel cheated with its frequent breakdowns. In the end, we sent it to the workshop and asked for a complete engine overhaul. Initially, my husband and I would only drive the car to the neighbourhood surau (smaller version of a masjid). The Atos is economical, easy to park in a densely populated neighbourhood. One day, as I dropped my sixteen-year-old son to school in my MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle), I caught sight of three burly men in dark jackets at the schools main entrance. I enquired if the men were drivers. No, ummi, said my son. Those are bodyguards of a super rich kid. As I waited for the car in front to move, I looked around and noticed the many flashy, branded 4WDs and sedans stationed nearby. I wondered: Would

my son be ashamed or embarrassed if he were to be seen in an old battered car? I dont know about you, but in the city where I live, life is firmly tied to status and pride. I remember driving home one morning in crawling traffic. A car trying to enter the lane on my left accidentally knocked the bumper of another car in front of it. I gathered it would have been a slight scratch at most, but the driver of the knocked car stopped, got out, and with an annoyed face and gait, walked to the driver who hit her, and gestured at her car, as if saying, You gotta pay for the damage, man. She seemed oblivious to the fact that, by doing that, she had made the morning traffic even worse.A case of damaged pride? Loss of self-esteem? I must be quite nave. Until today, I fail to see how a little scratch on a car could mean either or both. In a city where thousands fight for the best-paying jobs, hunt for housing in neighbourhoods they find hard to pay for, pride is might. A classic example is the practice of upgrading to a flashier car when youre promoted at work. And talk about the amount of money parents spend for their childrens weddings! It has become an accepted norm for parents to use a good portion of their savings to splash on their kids grand weddings. It doesnt seem to matter that divorce rates are going up. Wouldnt it be logical, smarter in fact, to invest in a marriage course so the newly-weds could empower themselves with better tools and techniques to deal with inevitable conflict as husband and wife? Perhaps its good to ask yourself every now and then: What makes you proud and what makes you ashamed? Are you

proud if the house you live in looks better than your neighbours? Or are you proud when you are able to do something to help promote kindness and interfaith understanding in your community? Are you proud if you could afford lavish holidays so you could show it off on your Facebook profile? Or would you rather have a modest breakaway and spend the extra for the hungry and homeless?Im glad to report my son didnt flinch every time he climbed into the little Atos. Each time I see him step into the car, I would make a little prayer that he would stay that way. I cant imagine him spending a lifetime trying to fit into the current trend of pride is might, trying to satisfy an insatiable and never-ending appetite for more, just for the sake of it. I would rather he associate pride with feeding the poor, or reading to the blind, or giving free tuition to an underpriviledged person, or simply working hard so he could become an outstanding person and make a difference to the world. And I would want him to associate shame with ignoring someone who needs help, not taking responsibility for himself and his family, or not respecting his teachers or neighbours. That would make me and my husband grateful and happy parents indeed.

DEATH OF YOUNG MANTOUCHES THE FOOTBALL WORLD!

    By Wassim Rafihi Melbourne

    M o h a m m e d Allouche was a young 22 year old man who had the

world at his feet. A good job in the financial sector and captain of his beloved Northern Saints FC Reserves side. Known to most people including his teammates and fellow clubman as Big Show where he had been playing for about 6 or 7 years. Mohammed was loved and well respected by his team mates and others at the club. Mohammed was also respected by umpires that umpired during his games where he would ask them to look after him during the game. Allouches life came to a sudden stop while playing for his beloved club during the Northern Saints vs Avondale Heights Reserves game on Saturday May 30. After kicking a goal and then trying to high five one of his teammates, Allouche fell into the arms of one his teammates

while having a cadiac arrest. He was attended to by all trainers that were at the game where a defibrillator was also used while paramedics arrived. Allouche was driven to the

Alfred hospital where he later passed away that evening leaving a big hole in the lives of his family and friends and teammates at the Northern Saints FC.

His funeral was a testimony to how many people his sudden death impacted, as it brought people of all faiths, cultures and religions to unite and pay their respects to a young man

loved and respected by many. Mohammed leaves behind his mum and dad and 3 brothers and a young sister and his beloved Northern Saints FC teammates.

Allah has granted us another opportunity to wash off our

sins, multiply our rewards and connect closely with Allah through the blessed month of Ramadan. It is a time for inner reflection and solidification of self-control. It is the best time of the year to uplift our spirituality and rejuvenate our hearts. Ramadan requires some preparations individually and collectively in order to get the best out of it. However; I am not referring to the preparation of Kibbeh and Samosa and the stacking of all sorts of food in our pantries. I am not referring either to organising our gatherings and invitations schedule. The preparation which we need is that of the soul and mind. In fact, we may need to cut down some socialising and outings in order to devote greater and richer time to our worshipping needs. Yes, it is us who are in dire need of the worship. Allah does not need our prayers and fast as hes the Rich and the Giver, it is us who need to build up our prosperity for the akhira. To do so, we first need to understand the real purposes of fasting, at both the physical and the spiritual levels. We must believe in the rewards which well receive not only in our book of deeds but also as a reflection on our manners, behaviour, psychology, inner and outer health and our relationships with people. This can only be done by abstaining, not only from food, drink, and sex, but also by strictly restraining our minds, hearts as well as our eyes, ears, hands and tongue. We need to embrace the spirit of fasting. We must brace our relationship with the

Quran. Not only by making the intention to complete reading the whole Quran by the end of the holy month, but by reading the Quran with reflection, deep cogitation and reasoning. We must aim to reach the desired level of connection with Allah when reading the Quran rather than focus on just decoding and flying through the pages. Let us multiply the reward to a greater level by ruminating and reflecting on the deeper meaning of the holy verses. Let them reflect on our manners and relationship with Allah and His creation.

Lets engage in Dhikr and continuous remembering of Allah. Lets empower our faith by always acknowledging the watchfulness of Allah and let this be our guideline to go ahead or refrain from any action, word or thought. Lets remember the disadvantaged and deprived people all around the world. Lets magnify our wealth by feeding the poor and spreading compassion and mercy to those who are not as privileged as we are. Lets begin Ramadan with pure hearts free of grudges, jealousy and hatred. We dont know if we will make it till the end of Ramadan or if we will be granted another Ramadan. Lastly; lets pray sincerity for the rise of the Muslim Ummah, for all the suffering Muslims in the calamitous and devastated regions of the world. Pray for freedom, for the return of real Islam, for faithful and strong leaders, for victory over those who are lashing our brothers and sisters blood daily. I ask Allah almighty that we all come out of Ramadan with our faith strengthened and our relationship with Allah stronger than ever.

    Ramadan:Month Of The Quran

By: Hakan Coruh/Melbourne Q. 2: 185 emphasises that It was in the month of Ramadan that the Quran was revealed as guidance for mankind, clear messages giving

guidance and distinguishing between right and wrong. In another verse (Q. 97: 1), it is stated that the Quran was sent down on the Night of Glory (Laylat al-qadr). The majority of Muslim scholars understand from this verse that the Quran was sent down from the Preserved Tablet to the heaven of this world, on the Night of Glory (See, Tafsir al-Jalalayn). Therefore, it can be said that the value of Ramadan relies on the revelation of the Quran. The Quran has affected the souls, hearts, spirits, and intellects of people, and in their individual, social, and political lives. From the age of its revelation to the present day, the Quran has been read by Muslims, it trains and refines their souls and purifies their hearts. The Quran has been a means of development for spirits, a guidance and light for intellects, life and happiness for life. (Nursi, The Seventh Ray). As is known, Allah began revealing the Quran during Ramadan. So Muslims should recite or listen to the Quran as if it were being revealed for the first time. If possible, they should listen to it as if they were hearing the Prophet recite it, or Gabriel reciting it to the Prophet, or Allah revealing it to the Prophet through Gabriel. In addition, according to the hadith, reciting one letter of the Quran means 10 good deeds and brings forth 10 fruits of Paradise. But, during

Ramadan, this reward is multiplied by 1,000 and even more for such verses as the Ayat al-Kursi (Nursi, The Twenty-Ninth Letter).According to al-Ghazali (d. 1111), there are various inner practices in the recitation of the Quran. Understanding the exaltedness and grandeur of the speech of the Quran, and Allahs grace and kindness to His creation, exaltation of the Speaker, presence of the heart, pondering (tadabbur), and trying to understand are some of them. He quotes Ali b. Abu Talib (d. 660 CE) as saying, There is no good in an act of worship without comprehension, nor in a recitation without pondering. (Al-Ghazali, Ihya, in K.Z. Sands). At this point, the Companions of the Prophet are great examples for the recitation of the Quran to the Muslims. For example, a number of companions were dividing the verses into small parts or groups, focusing on a small part, reflecting on it, and trying to understand before learning other group verses. For example, some companions such as Abd Allah ibn Masud (d. 653) state that when we learned ten verses from the Prophet, we did not pass other verses without studying knowledge (ilm) of these ten verses and their practice. For this reason, they were staying for a long time in memorization of a chapter. As an example, Ibn Umar kept on memorizing chapter The Cow (Al-baqara) for eight years. Here it should be noted that what led them to this action was the following verse in the Quran: This is a blessed Scripture which We sent down to you [the Prophet], for people to think about its messages, and for those with understanding to take heed. (Quran, 38: 29). It is worth mentioning that pondering a speech without understanding its meanings is not possible (M. H. Dhahabi, Al-tafsir wa-l-mufassirun). Therefore, Muslims should benefit from this holy month for recitation of the Quran and its comprehension.

    Al Salam Festival (Festival of Peace) BURC COLLEGESchool ClubsE x t r a - c u r r i c u l a r activities are a very important part of a students schooling

life. Academic subjects and extra-curricular activities complement each other and develop a well-rounded, socially skilled, and healthier student. Extra-curricular activities help students to develop self-esteem, motivation and better time management. Students become more organised in the class room and are better behaved as their sense of belonging is reinforced. New skills are also learned such as teamwork, social skills, leadership, and a sense of commitment. As we recognise the importance of extra-curricular activities, it is with the hard work and dedication of our staff that a range of after school clubs were established. This year, I am very delighted to highlight that we have been able to offer a wide variety of clubs. It is very pleasing to witness the students enjoying these clubs and spending fruitful time with their teachers. I am sure that in the upcoming years Burc College will bring more and more benefits and fun to the students social and academic life through school clubs and extra-curricular activities. Every year the Islamic communities within South Australia hold extraordinary festivals

for the Eid celebrations. However this year, the community of South Australian Muslims held the first annual festival named Al Salam Festival, meaning the festival of peace. The purpose of the festival was to allow absolutely everyone to feel welcomed and encouraged to learn about the religion of Islam and to learn about the different cultures and traditions that every Muslim brings from their unique and different background. The festival provided wonderful knowledge about the religion of Islam and there were many open stalls for any guest to learn more and ask questions. This was not only for the non-Muslims but for the Muslims as well. The positive feedback was greatly appreciated and noted from all guests.

A festival like this not only helps with fighting the misconceptions that unfortunately surround the religion but also educates people of any background or any religion that not all Muslims are the same. In fact, not only are all Muslims not the same but the whole religion and people following Islam should not be condemned and held responsible for the actions of others. Unfortunately throughout all forms of media the Islamic religion and Muslim community around the world are constantly being targeted, harassed, threatened and abused. Festivals like this one are to put an end to the racism and to really show the peacefulness of the religion. Festivals like the Al Salam Festival

are to help encourage and show people what Islam is truly about and what the Muslim communities aspire to be like, which is being helpful, being caring and kind, being truthful, being role models, being generous, giving to the needy and many more.

The festival had many wonderful forms of entertainment and excitement that was very lively and energetic. There were games and rides for the children such as the large bouncing castle, bumper cars, gravitron and spinning teacups. There were also many stalls such as; trying on a hijabs, a stall to purchase goodies such as hijabs (head scarves), conservative clothing and fashionable clothing for the younger females. Other stalls such as henna designs and show bags for the children. Of course their were several stalls of information for anyone who was interested about Islam and stalls such as Islamic relief, where people can donate to

charity for anyone around the world that is suffering from poverty. One of the most amazing and exceptional aspects of the festival was the marvelous diverse variety of foods! Cuisines from traditional foods such as kebabs, chicken skewers, burgers, spiral potato crisps, yiros, hotdogs and Turkish foods such as Gozlema. There was of course an ice-cream truck and cupcake stalls with other varieties of sweets for those who had that sweet tooth.

As a guest who attended the spectacular festival I was intrigued, interested and 100% engaged in the activitie
