ВІТАЄМО!WELCOME!

CALGARY UKRAINIAN FESTIVAL 2017!On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Calgary Ukrainian Festival Foundation I would like to welcome you to the EIGHTH Annual Calgary Ukrainian Festival!

What a wonderful journey our Festival has been over the past 8 years. From Calgary’s June snow to extreme heat, our show always continues. We now average over 650 extremely talented performers from across Canada, presenting the best in Ukrainian song, dance and instrumental artistry. Our collection of Ukrainian vendors from across the country continues to expand, bringing everything from traditional painted ‘pysanky’ to the newest Ukrainian fashion trends. Of course, don’t forget the food. Returning after a 3-year rotation, back again is Ollies Homestyle Catering. If you want to feel like you are sitting at Baba’s kitchen table, you have come to the right place.

So why stop there right? Our 2017 Festival has an entirely NEW event. The Ukrainian Festival “After-Hours”. Ever wonder what happens after the last stage show ends Saturday? The after party begins. There is a very different menu being offered at After-Hours. Ukrainian style ‘Street Food’, not seen or served here in Canada. The music will continue to play. Our performers will be out of their stage costumes, back into street clothes. The dance floor is open to all. Come spend the evening with those you saw on stage and meet a new friend. Not to worry, tables will still be there to enjoy the new food, and all the finest in Ukrainian beer and vodka. It is a true Ukrainian style beer gardens, but right here in Calgary. The NEW Festival ‘After-Hours’. Admission is FREE!! Memories are forever.

There are 9 notable individuals that work tirelessly with me on all the planning that goes in to everything that you see at our Festival. I am honored to introduce to you:

Over 125 years ago the very first documented Ukrainian immigrant landed in Canada. It was a long journey by ship, followed by back breaking manual labor, breaking ground and building a homestead. All of this in the search for a better life for their families in a new world. Today we honor and commemorate their passion and endurance by continuing to practice all the customs and traditions that make up our Ukrainian heritage. What you see before you at our Festival is what was passed to us through the generations. We carry it forward with pride in honor of their memory.

Your Festival journey starts right here. Raise a traditional toast to your neighbor sitting next to you. “На здоров’я” (Na zdorovia) To your health! The stage lights will brighten, the music will start to play. Now let the show begin!

FILIP KONOWAL

Filip Konowal was a highly decorated Ukrainian Canadian soldier. He is the only Eastern European recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy given to British and Commonwealth forces. He was also entitled to the Cross of St George, 4th Class.

He was born in Kutkivtsi, Ukraine in what was then Imperial Russia on 25 March 1887 and came to Canada about 1913. Having been trained as a bayonet instructor, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915,

served with the 47th Infantry Battalion, and eventually was promoted to the rank of corporal. Corporal Konowal earned the Victoria Cross for his actions from 22 to 24 August 1917 while leading his section in overcoming German resistance on Hill 70, near Lens in France. During these operations, Konowal himself killed at least 16 of the enemy. Arriving at one of his battalion’s objectives, he realized that a machine gun was holding up the right flank of the Canadian attack. Konowal assaulted the German position, killed the crew of the machine gun, and returned with the gun. The next day he attacked another machine gun emplacement, and killed three of the enemy before destroying the position and the gun with explosives. Corporal Konowal then continued his advance until he was severely wounded. When he had recovered, Konowal was for a time assigned to the Military Attaché at the Russian Embassy in London, England, before enrolling as a sergeant with the Canadian Siberian Expeditionary Force.

He died in Ottawa, Ontario on 3 June 1959 and is buried at the Notre Dame Cemetery, in Ottawa, Ontario.

OUR CANADIAN UKRAINIAN LEGACY

In 1891, the first Ukrainian immigrants arrived on the shores of Canada and these pioneers, their children and descendants, numbering some 1.3 million today, have left a profound mark on Canada. These Canadian Ukrainians helped develop an enriched Canada through their industriousness, rich cultural heritage, religious beliefs and values, dedication to family, community, and the stewardship of the land.

As the Ukrainian immigrants took their first steps on the Canadian soil, they were leaving the foundational footsteps for their children and their future generations to come. In honour of the many thousands of Ukrainian immigrants and their Canadian Ukrainian descendents, the Calgary Ukrainian Festival is proud to be a part of the Canadian Ukrainian imprint and its part in celebrating 125 years of Ukrainians in Canada.”

NESTOR BURTNYK

A Software engineer, he fathered the multimillion-dollar computer animation industry through his pioneering work in animation technology.

Born in Ethelbert, Manitoba, to Ukrainian immigrants, he began Canada’s first major computer graphics research project in 1968 at the National Research Council when computers were still in early development. As part of this research in graphics, the first computer mouse in Canada was built under the supervision of J.K. Pulfer, based on a demonstration by its inventor, Prof. Englebart at Stanford University.

In 1969, he attended a conference in California where Disney studio animators presented an overview of the process of creating Disney-style hand-drawn animation. Although he claimed to lack an artistic bent, he returned to Ottawa and, with Marceli Wein, developed “key-frame animation” which used hard-drawn computer

images and was patterned on the Disney Studio’s process. Based on its demonstrated potential, he was joined by physicist Wein to participate in its further development and to encourage experimentation by animators from the National Film Board. This technology, designed originally to make computers easier to use, is considered classic in the animated film industry, and inspired many to pursue careers in animation. The technology was used to create Peter Foldes’ 11-minute film “Hunger” for the National Film Board, which in 1974 won the jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival and became the first computer-animated movie to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Short.

In 1997, he and Wein finally earned an Academy Award for technical achievement in computer animation. During his 45-year career at the NRC, which began the year he graduated from university, He also studied intelligent robotics and image processing directed primarily in support of applications of the Canadarm and its related technologies. He retired from active research in 1995.

In 2000, he was elected a Member of the Order of Canada for his pioneering work in computer animation.

JOHN SOPINKA John Sopinka was a Canadian lawyer and puisne justice on the Supreme Court of Canada, the first Ukrainian-Canadian appointed to the high court. He was born in Broderick, Saskatchewan, on March 19, 1933, and the son of Metro Sopinka and Nancy Kikcio. In 1941 his family moved to Hamilton, Ontario. He studied at the University of Toronto, earning a B.A. in 1955 and an LL.B. three years later. From 1955 to 1958, while working on his law degree, he played professional football with the Toronto Argonauts and Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. He was called to the bar of Ontario in 1960, and was later called to the bars of four other provinces and two territories. He practised law in Toronto for 28 years, first with Fasken & Calvin and then with Stikeman, Elliott. During that time, he also lectured on law at both Osgoode Hall Law School and the University of Toronto. He is the author of several legal works, including The Trial of an Action, and co-author of The Law of Evidence in Canada. Appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada on May 24, 1988, he served on the Court for nine years. Justice Sopinka died on November 24, 1997, at the age of 64.

RANDY BACHMAN

Randolph Charles “Randy” Bachman, (born September 27, 1943) is a Canadian musician best known as lead guitarist, songwriter and a founding member of the 1960s and 1970s rock bands The Guess Who and Bachman–Turner Overdrive. Bachman was also a member of Brave Belt with Chad Allan, Union and Ironhorse, and has recorded numerous solo albums. Randy Bachman can be heard on Saturday nights on CBC radio one as the host of the two-hour show Randy Bachman’s Vinyl Tap. It is carried throughout North America on Sirius Satellite Radio.

He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Karl (Charlie) Bachman and Anne (Nancy) Dobrinsky. Randy is of half German and half Ukrainian ancestry. At age three, he won a singing contest on CKY’s King of the Saddle program and age 5 he had started studying the violin in the Royal Toronto Conservatory system. He studied violin until the age of 12 when he grew dissatisfied with the structured lessons. He found that while he couldn’t read music, he could play anything if he heard it once; he referred to it as his phonographic memory.

At age 15, Bachman saw Elvis Presley play on Tommy Dorsey’s television show and the sight of the guitar around Presley’s neck inspired him. He learned three chords from his cousin, then started practising on a modified Hawaiian dobro. At age 16, Bachman met up with Lenny Breau; over the next two years Breau taught Bachman finger picking and also introduced him to the music of Chet Atkins.

In 1959 Bachman bought a ticket to see Les Paul in concert at a Winnipeg supper club but could not get in as he was too young. He instead helped Paul set up before the show and also helped him reload everything into the car after the show. Still a budding guitarist at this point, Bachman asked Paul if he could teach him a guitar lick; Paul ended up teaching his version of “How High the Moon”.

Randy Bachman has become a legendary figure in the rock and roll world through his talents as a guitarist, songwriter, performer and producer. He has earned over 120 Gold and Platinum album/singles awards around the world for performing and producing. His songwriting has garnered him the coveted #1 spot on radio play lists in over 20 countries and he has amassed over 40 million records sold. His songs have been recorded by numerous other artists and placed in dozens of television, movie and commercial soundtracks. His music has provided a veritable soundtrack of the last thirty years of popular music.

CHANTAL KREVIAZUK

Chantal Kreviazuk is a Canadian singer and songwriter. She was was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on May 18, 1974, to Carol (Walaschuk) and John Kreviazuk. Her mother is of Ukrainian, Scottish, English, Polish, and some Saulteaux Native Canadian descent, and her father is of Ukrainian ancestry. Chantal appeared on an episode of the Canadian version of genealogy television show Who Do You Think You Are? in 2007, and traced her ancestry.

Two of Chantal’s paternal great-grandparents, Nicholas Kreviazuk and Annie Uskiw, were born in Galicia, Ukraine, and moved to Canada in 1906. Nicholas was originally raised Christian Orthodox, and converted to Presbyterianism in Canada.

Chantal’s maternal grandfather was Walter Walaschuk/Woloszczuk (the son of Joannes Woloszczuk and Anastasia Adamchuk). Walter was born in Winnipeg. Joannes was originally from Bohorodchany, Galicia, Ukraine, the son of Onofrius Woloszczuk and Maria Biliczak, who was likely of Polish origin, the daughter of Peter Biliczak and Catherine Pawlowska. Chantal’s great-grandmother

Anastasia Adamchuk was of Ukrainian origin.

Isabel was born in St. Andrews, Manitoba, of Scottish, English, and Saulteaux (First Nations) roots. George was the son of Thomas Freeman and Elizabeth. Alice was the daughter of William Slater and Catherine Cook.

As a young classically trained artist, Chantal gained a record contract from Sony, as a vocalist, without ever having performed live. Kreviazuk was a prodigy at the piano, winning competitions and receiving classical education on piano as well as voice. At 22, with her newly inked Sony deal, Kreviazuk began working on her debut album, Under These Rocks and Stones. Released in 1997, the album went twice-platinum largely on the strength of her singles “God Made Me” and “Surrounded.” A couple of well-placed soundtrack singles -- covers of John Denver’s “Leaving on a Jet Plane” (Armageddon) and Randy Newman’s “Feels Like Home” (Dawson’s Creek) -- in 1998 helped boost her exposure outside of Canada.

Her follow-up album Colour Moving and Still was released in 2000 netting Kreviazuk a pair of Juno Awards for “Best Female Artist” and “Best Pop/Adult Album.” Her third album, 2002’s What If It All Means Something featured a number of collaborations with husband

and Our Lady Peace singer Raine Maida. In 2006’s, Chantal released Ghost Stories which reached #2 on the Canadian Album Charts and became her most successful album to date. Prior to the release of her next studio album, she issued her first anthology, a greatest hits collection called Since We Met: The Best of 1996-2006. Plain Jane, her fifth album was released in 2009.

In 2011, she made a guest appearance on fellow Canadian artist Drake’s album Take Care. Her first live release, “In This Life,” followed a year later. In 2014, she appeared on rapper Jay Rock’s track “Pay For It” which she then performed alongside Rock and Kendrick Lamar on an episode of Saturday Night Live.

In late 2015, she announced a new deal with Warner Canada by releasing “Into Me,” her first new single in five years.

Calgary’s Barvinok Ukrainian Dance Society was founded in 1990 and has been at the forefront of children’s dance for many years. The school features classes from ages 3 to adult. Our dancers are provided with the finest instruction where they develop a sense of belonging and lifelong friendships. Above all dancing with Barvinok is fun.

Barvinok’s performers shine in costumes hand crafted in Ukraine. All of the school’s costumes are designed by Artistic Director Trevor Shular to create Barvinok’s authentic and unique look. Trevor, along with his artistic team, brings new choreography to life each year, ensuring each dancer is challenged to their personal best. To support this artistic vision, in 2006, Barvinok had ten original musical works created in Ukraine for the exclusive use of the organization.

Over the last 27 years, the group has toured to Ukraine on four different tours providing the dancers the opportunity to train and perform. Other highlights have included numerous Ukrainian festivals from across Alberta to Manitoba. All of these events provided dancers with a sense of pride of being able to share their culture with the public.

Suzirya means a constellation of many stars. Since its inception in 2004, Suzirya has been collecting stars from several aspects of the dance world. From Troyanda in Winnipeg, the Young Canadians in Calgary to the Virsky Company of Ukraine, Suzirya Ukrainian Dance Theatre attracts passionate performers to bring its vision to life. Under the direction of Serguei Makarov, Suzirya is recognized for its unique style of Ukrainian dance fused with ballet. An invitation to perform for the Queen led to being cast in the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show and thus began Suzirya’s recognition as a premiere performance company.

The delicate elegance of the ladies contrasted by the strength and power of the men has delighted audiences around the world. This dramatic style made it possible to bring the integrity of Taras Shevchenko’s poem, Kateryna, to life in 2007. In collaboration with the Edmonton Male Chorus, the production of Kateryna touched audiences across Canada and Australia. The final show of Kateryna was performed in Ottawa in May of 2010. Suzirya then commenced working on their new production “Spirit of the Seasons”, which debuted in October 2012 with shows at the Southern Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary and the Arden Theatre in Edmonton. Suzirya toured this production to Victoria and Nanaimo in June of 2013.

The dedication, support, and desire to share the Ukrainian culture with others that has been shown by not only dancers, but by all involved in this organization, has allowed this group to develop into the dynamic organization it is today. Suzirya is currently preparing for their show, Mosaic, which will commemorate 150 years of Canadian Confederation. This show hopes to display the rich varieties of ethnicity and cultures that make up Canada’s National Identity.

This group of passionate professionally trained dancers have travelled around the globe performing in festivals such as the Kimberley International Folk Festival, Hopak in the Park, Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival, the Bloor West Village Toronto Ukrainian Festival, Spain’s Calella Grand Folk Festival. And most recently San Diego’s House of Ukraine Festival.

Promoting Ukrainian culture throughout the city of Calgary has always been a prime focus for Suzirya. Performances for the Ukrainian community, city arts events, and private functions has made it possible for Suzirya to continue to share their passion for Ukrainian culture, through dance, one step at a time.

The Verkhovyna Choir was formed in 1959, as a female vocal group. Under the direction of Mr. M. Sochaniwsky, their first conductor, the ladies made their first public appearance on April 24, 1960. The choir remained a female entity until 1976, when its membership was expanded to include male voices.

The Verkhovyna Choir specializes in interpreting the ancient song and dance of the Ukrainian people. On the Edmonton Ukrainian cultural landscape, choral singing boasts a proud and accomplished tradition, and Verkhovyna has always been driven to consistently widen its repertoire while improving each member’s singing technique. Verkhovyna has grown to produce dramatic renditions of traditional, ancestral and folkloric themes, as well as introducing interpretive works that depict the contemporary realities of an independent Ukraine. The choir’s vast repertoire also includes the Eastern-rite Divine Liturgy (in Ukrainian), which was first sung at an Easter mass in 1980.

The Verkhovyna Choir consists of over thirty individuals, who thrive as a group that is always warmly received at various community celebrations, receptions, banquets, multicultural showcases, and their many self-produced full-length shows.

Volunteerism is a powerful means of tackling huge projects such as our 8th Annual Calgary Ukrainian Festival.

There are so many people who have contributed their time, skills and knowledge at every level in order for this festival to take place. The Calgary Ukrainian Festival Foundation’s Board of Directors would like to thank each and every volunteer for his/her involvement with this event. Every volunteer has truly facilitated the City of Calgary to mark its continued legacy of tradition and a celebration of spirit — a Ukrainian tradition.

Volunteers’ passion and dedication are so hard to come by and their selfless dedication speaks volumes.

OUR HISTORYThis saskaToon fixTure has seen Trials, Triumphs and hisTory made.

The brewery was built in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1927, operating as the Hub City Brewing Company. After some changes in management, in 1956, the brewery was acquired and operated as O’Keefe Brewing until 1989.

In 1989 the entire plant was invited to a meeting where they were told Carling and Mol-son would merge. This merger would mean the end of the brewery in Saskatoon and the loss of jobs for its 40 employees.

A group of determined and bold employees stood up and pooled their resources. The Original 16 risked it all and founded the Great Western Brewing Company. The brewery was David in a world full of Goliaths. But, with the support of their family, the Original 16 made it through each and every challenge thrown at them.

Now, the Great Western Brewing Company is one of Canada’s most successful regional brewers and an internationally recognized producer of world-class beer.
