It has already been four years since the Korean Board of Veterinary Practitioners(KBVP) was officially launched. We are seeing rapid changes in the field of veterinary medicine, especially the companion animal practice. We can gauge the future of veterinary medicine through the growing interest in animal welfare, the development of veterinary medical technology, the organization of high standard international conferences, and the growth of biotechnology. Moreover, the preparation and establishment of the veterinary specialization program has come to the stage of pursuing qualitative growth based on quantitative growth. All of this is made possible by mission, sacrifice and endeavors of clinical veterinarians. In order to contribute to the development of the veterinary medicine, KBVP organized a symposium focused on increasing the social role of veterinarians through "One-Health" and specialized workshops enhancing the professionalism of veterinarians in March and April 2019. And in October 2019, we will hold a symposium on "adrenal gland" for the professional and integrated veterinary medical expertise.I hope 2019 KBVP programs can be used to share and exchange information on veterinarians' social status as well as professional and integrated veterinary medical knowledge. I wish you all health and happiness, and I would like to your continued interest and support for KBVP.
KBVP was established under the mission of "Clients and companion animals can receive quality medical care from veterinarians anywhere in the country.” In order to accomplish this mission, our main activities are 'standardization ofmedical care', 'improvement of medical treatment technology', 'improvement of communication skills', ‘establishment of the right relationship between veterinarian and client', and ‘propagation of One-Health & One-Medicine'.In the first half of each year, we hold a symposium on one of the main topics of One-Health and have presentations and discussions among multisectoral experts, such as veterinarians, doctors, and environmental experts. Through the One-Health symposiums, we seek to explore not only the interrelationships and problems of each sector on the topic, but also suggestions for progressive
In the second half of each year, we hold organ-based medicine symposiumto acquire integrated knowledge of specific organs based on anatomy, physi-ology, pathophysiology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, and surgery with the goal of deepening the learning of specific organs. In 2019, we will focus on the adrenal gland, a typical endocrine organ. Hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease) and hypohypoadrenocorticism(Addison’s disease) in middle-aged dogs are common diseases of the adrenalgland. Recently, a new endocrine disorder called Aldosteronism has been found. The diagnosis and treatment of the adrenal diseases has become an importantpart of the clinical practice of companion animals due to the development of hormone tests, advanced diagnostic imaging, and various therapeutic drugs.Dr. Patty Lathan (Missisippi State University, USA) and Dr. Takuo Ishida (PhD and Dilomate of JCVP, Japan) and other leading experts in the field will be joined for this symposium. Through this Adrenal Day, we will not only provide the latest knowledge on the adrenal gland, but also provide the guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of the adrenal diseases and want to spread it throughout Asia as well as Korea. Through the academic programs prepared by KBVP in 2019, we hope you will have an opportunity to deepen your un- derstanding of One-Health and gain comprehensive knowledge on adrenalgland.

This type of seminar may look unfamiliar to many of you, but this
is the new trend of medical education. These days, veterinary
education in the United States is mostly organ-based and
problem-based. This seminar is a typical organ-based teaching.
Medicine or veterinary medicine, whoever the patient is, is the art
and science to diagnose and treat disease. Therefore, the target
is clinical medicine. On the other hand, the structure of education
in the old world is well separated into basic science and clinical
medicine. There is no basic or applied, and our only goal is clinical
medicine. The basic veterinary science is for clinical veterinary
medicine. For these reasons, current veterinary medicine is
taught in an integrated manner, but not in an old fashioned basic
first, clinical next manner. The only classification method we
employ is not basic and applied, but based on organs. In this
way, one coordinator, preferably a clinical person, plans all the
lectures necessary to accomplish good diagnosis and treatments
for disorders of one particular organ. Therefore, the goal is clinic.
Basic science is not for basic, but for clinical medicine. Then,
anatomy, physiology, pathology lectures are first lined up, and
then, clinical pathology, internal medicine, imaging and surgery
lectures follow. All of them are for a single organ. So this time, all
the lecturers from the basic and clinical fields get together just for
discussing the single organ, the adrenal. At schools, this organ-
based teaching may take long, but this time you can learn eve-
rything about canine and feline adrenal diseases within one day
and in a single room.
Please enjoy the future veterinary education.
