METHODMy chosen object is an umbrella. Due to the dimension of the object, I had to photograph the umbrella firstly, and then printed off photos in different scales. Hence I can traced the chosen object onto paper for drawings, and the measurements were made with scale ruler.

SKIN COMPONENTThe top canopy is considered as the skin part of the umbrella, and it is used to catch the rain. As the left image shown, this part is always divided into eight triangles equally. It take leteral force.

BONE COMPONENTThe rest parts of an umbrella are made of metal currently, and the joints are flexible. The right image displays ribs of the umbrella, and it looks like a fold arm to transfer compression and tension force. This part acts as main support in object system.

Sketch Model

1. In order to create the reconfigured object for a skin and bone system, I used cardboard and cut it into strips to create the hinges.

2. Steel pins were used for jointing the strips and supporting the frame.

3. The coloured paper was cut into rectengle that was looked as cloth, and then it would be a skin element of the model.

4. Cloth have been attached with glue to the frame, and the model was completed.

The changeable object brings ont only connection but also barrier. In terms of personal space, it is effective at protecting the head and provides the sense of security.

Sometimes a person just wants to escape to his own world for thinking, but being connected all the time means he is subject to interruptions.

The changeable design is able to play as a barrier that can provide a personal space meanwhile allow people to connect the external world.

Each segment of the object is foldable. When you fold down it and show your facial features, you can feel the external.

Closed segment means people need a quite world and aviod visual contact.

Exploring the birdcage, even though it traps the birds, it also protect birds from the sun and wind to some extent.

Hence, inspired by the birdcage, the frame (see left) is an important part as bone system in this design, and it provides a personal zone for wearer.

Moreover, the external sheet is transparent usually, and it is collapsable with the frame, when wearer is in comfort, the object can be closed up.

Thinking about the personal space, people will feel comfortable in their own intimate zone without diturbance. As the radius of the object is about 48cm, users can always keep distance with the others.

It is like an inflated vest when wearer feel comfortable and safe, however if the personal space of wearers is invaded, it will become a shield with the array of sharp spines to help wearer to defend himself.

Following the design of umbrella, it acts as a shelter in our life for the changeable weather context. However, how can human defend himself when an accident happens?

The vest-like design is able to be a sencondary skin which is easy to carry with users. It looks like a shield particularly avoid the front and back attack.
