1. Study and remember the correct shapes & meanings of each character using “Kanji List and Memorization” section (p. 8 to 10) of Additional Notes for Lesson 3 Part 2.
Do not use other printed materials to remember the correct shapes of handwritten characters.

Study and remember the correct writing orderusing the “Kanji Writing Order” section in “Kanji Practice” section of each lesson in VIULearn.It is extremely important to follow the proper writing order because it helps: 1) To write the character neatly; and2) To look up a kanji in kanji dictionaries.Also, pay attention to how to end each line.

1. Study the usage of each Kanji using the “Reading” section (p. 11 & 12 ) of Additional Notes for L3 Part 2.
2. Do Kanji usage exercises on the second page of your Kanji Practice Sheet for each lesson. Write ふりがな on the Kanji you write.ふりがな is the pronunciations written in Hiragana on top of Kanji.

How to decide When and Which Kanji to Use

Pick the Kanji that matches with the meaning of the word you want to write with.e.g, 3,900 = three thousand nine hundred
Particles are always written in Hiragana. Never written in Kanji!e.g., I am going to school.

Do not relying on the pronunciations (=readings) of Kanji when deciding which one to use.

A Kanji character often has multiple ways to readはち はちまん
八 (eight), 八万 (ten thousands); butはっ はっぴゃく はっせん
八さい (age), 八百 (hundreds), 八千(thousands)
Pay attention to how each character is used Be careful with: 一 (いち・いっ)、四(よん・よ・し)、六(ろく・ろっ)、七(なな・しち)、八(はち・はっ)、九(きゅう・く)、十(じゅう・じゅっ)、百(ひゃく・びゃく・ぴゃく)、千(せん・ぜん)
