A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. Prepositions may indicate position, direction, or time.
Let’s drive to Los Angeles. We can go in August.But don’t go without us. We would like to ride with you.I am from Brandenburg. I’ll see you on your birthday.
The noun or pronoun that the preposition connects to the rest of the sentence is called the object of the preposition. The preposition and its object together are called a prepositional phrase.

Accusative case
Objects of the prepositions are in the accusative case when they are used with a verb that indicates direction.
Wir fahren an die Ostsee auf die Insel Rügen.

Dative Case
The objects of the prepositions are in the dative case when they are used with a verb that indicates location.
Wir waren an der Ostsee auf der Insel Rügen.

Certain prepositions combine with the definite articles das and dem to spell one word.
Combinations with das
direction
An+ das = ans
In + das = ins
Vor + das = vors
Unter + das = unters
Über + das = übers
Hinter + das = hinters
Combinations with dem
location
An + dem = am
In + dem = im
Vor + dem = vorm
Unter + dem = unterm
Über + dem = überm
Hinter + dem = hinterm
