MANALO 1

SUBJECT

12 JULY 2011

Political, Economic and Social Condition during Rizal’s Time

What is Philippines during Rizal’s time? In 1812, the Philippines became a

province of Spain and all the native Filipinos were declared by law citizens or

Spaniards, with the right of representation in the Spanish law-making body or Cortes.

In the period of Spanish colonization, only the Spaniards became the head

officials of our country. Their choice of officials was so weak. They are appointing

officials according to his or her race. Some were ignorant barbers and lackeys were

appointed as provincial governors and rough sailors were assigned as district judges

and garrison commanders. Many of them were not prepared to govern the country and

even though they were inexperienced, they are putted in the positions. They are just

creating reasons to corrupt money from the people. On the other hand, Spaniards are

always siding with themselves. Even though they are wrong, they will consider

themselves right. They were so unfair with the Filipinos. They always wanted to control

us; they oppressed, tortured, punished and abused a lot of our countrymen, and yet we

can’t do anything about it.

MANALO 2

During Rizal’s time the union of the church and the state was a cardinal policy in

Spain. The governor-general was the head of the central government who exercised

great powers. As for the archbishop, he became the head of the ecclesiastical

administration and he was appointed by the Pope upon recommendation of the King.

The union of the church and the state was a cause of conflicts between the government

and the church.

As for the social conditions, most of the foreigners in the Philippines marveled at

the beauty of native Filipino women. But a lot of discriminations were received by the

Filipinos. They don’t believe in anything we say and they always underestimate us.

They would always look into your status in life. Once you have power or wealth they will

side with you, but for the poor ones, they are always being mistreated and neglected by

the Spanish government. And when you interfere with their actions, they will punish or

kill you. They are spreading fear in our country and they never gave the Filipinos

equality. The Spaniards always think that they are superior to us.

They caused a lot of bad things in our country; they abused our kindness and

treated us unfairly. That’s why Rizal decided to fight them not my battle but with his

words, so that his fellowmen will open their eyes and see what the Spaniards are doing

to them.
