Hello,

MynameisKatie,IamoriginallyfromColorado,buthavebeenenjoying,studying,andcallingthebeauti-fulstateofMontanahomeforthelast4years.IaminpursuitonaninternshipinwhichIhopetogainexperi-enceandunderstandingwithinthearchitecturalworld.Ihaveaninsatiablecuriosityanddesiretotouch,see,hear,andunderstandallIcaninthisworld.

Additionally,IwouldconsidermyselfanexcellentteamplayerandIpridemyselfongivingallideasafairapproach.Ihavegrowntoappreciatetheideasthatcanbecreatedbyteamworkthroughtheuniquewayevery-onethinkscollidinginasinglearena.IfeelthatIamaqualitycommunicator,andhaveanexcellentanduniquewayofexplainingthingsinordertogeteveryoneonthesamepagevisuallyandmentally.

IhavecompletedmyfourthyearofmyBachelorsinEnvironmentalDesign,andhaveplanstopursueaMastersdegreeinthefallof2016.IhopetoutilizeallabilitiesandskillsIhavelearnedthroughoutmyeduca-tiontothebenefitsoftheworkplace.Ihavedual-citizen -shipwiththeEU,andhopetoutilizethistolearnaboutandcompareasmuchasIcanwithintheworldofarchi-tecture. Iamveryinterestedinworkinginaspectsofarchitecturewhichconfrontsocialissuesorrelatetopreservationandorrestoration.TheseareasIhavedis-coveredaninterestin,butthereismuchIhaven'thadtheopportunitytoattemptandlookforwardtothatchallengedaily.

TheSeattleHydrologyInstituteworkstoreuniteSeattlewiththewaterfront.Seattlehasbeenseendesperatelybuildingwallsandstiltstogetawayfromitimpedingwatersforgenerations,butisthatthebestanswer??? TheJamesCornerrenovationbeginstoaddressthedisconnectbe-tweenSeattleanditswaterfront,butfailstobreaktheseawallandallowtheoceantore-inhabitthecity.Arelationshipbetweenthetidesandthecitycanberevealedaftertheremovalofthewallthathasbeenseparatingthemfordecades.

TheHydrologyLaboratorywouldhelpcreateauniqueecologicalconditionbycollectingfreshwateronitsroof,filteringthroughthebuildingandontothesite.Herethisfreshwatermixeswiththetidecreatingauncom-monbrackishsituationtobestudiedandenjoyednotonlybyscientists,butyouraveragecitizenandtheirchildren.

Whenlookingatbirds,themiracleofflighthasalwaysfascinatedus,andvitaltothatprocessisthefeather.Thewonderthatisthefeatheristhebasisforthisproject,havingalreadyinspiredcountlessscholarsbyitsuniqueproperties.

Themoirepatternisvitalintheinthefacade,obscur-ingtheviewer,fromtheexterior,andallowingthebirdstosingwithoutdis-turbance.Thecenterraisesorlowerstheviewertothehabitatofvariousbirdswithintheregion.

Whilebeginningtheexplorationofcornersandcornersetseating,astrongconnectiontothesteppingshapeofazigguratwasfound.Thezigguratisaspiritualtemplecon-structedinancientMesopotamia.Thestepped,cornerdesignoftheziggurataddstothecomfortofsuchasacredspaceandultimatelyatteststothereachingoftheheavens.

IvanDoigwasanawardwinningauthor,whowrotemanycriticallyacclaimednovelsamajorityofwhicharebasedinhisnativestateofMontana.TheworksofIvanDoigareconsideredtobealargepartoftheculturalidentityoftheAmericanWest,masterfullydetailingBigSkycountryanditsinhabitants.

IvanDoigpassedawaythisyearat75yearsold.IrevisedmyresidencemidwaythroughthesemesterintoamemorialtohonortheintangibleimpactleftonmanybyIvanDoigandhistalesoftheMontanarange.

IntheSpringof2015Ihadtheopportuni-tytoworkwithMFGRDesignsandthreeotherstudentsinordertocreatethebackdropfortheTedXBozemanevent.

Theentiredesignbuildprojecttook8weekstocompletewithabudgetofaroundathousanddollars.Thedesignofthebackdropdynamicallyrespondedtocameraandviewerangleswithinthevenue.TheprojectutilizedgrasshopperandplasmacutterstoeasilycreatemasscustomizationinthesteelconnectorsontheLVLribs.

Thestagewasalsodesignedtobepartiallyreusableforpotentialinstallationataparkorsimilarvenue.Additionalpartswouldbeaddedtoprovideseating,alongwiththecurrentshadingschemebeingupdatedtoamaterialsuitableforexterioruse.

Thereareseveralkeyamenitieslocatedwithinthebuildingalongwithsharedhousingunitsinordertoac-complishthis.ThiswouldbeaK-6MontessoriSchool,anElderlyServicesCenterandaCommunityCenter.

Theseamenitiescou-pledwithco-housingstrivestosetupasupportiveneigh-borhoodatmosphereandcreatemeaningfulintergener-ationalrelationships.

Theindependentelderlypopulationisnotonethatisoftenfocusedoninourcommu-nities.Makingthisgroupofpeople,andtheirinteractionswithchildrenvitaltodailylifeviasharedmealsandreadingtimeworkstoreestablishtheirvaluewithinacom-munity.Byintegratingthetwogenerationstheyarebothallowedtheopportunitytonotonlybehelped,buthelpalso,thesebondsareshowntobenefitbothgroupsmental-lyandpsychologically.

AmajorityofthesewatercolorpiecescomefromatriptoNewZea-land.Thenorthandsouthislandwereexploredoverthecourseof4weeksOurexplorationsanddiscover-iesweretobedocumentedthroughaseriesofwatercolors.

Watercolorisoneofmyfavoritemediumstoworkwith.Theexpressionandcharacterthatcanbeshownthroughlayerswhilestillremainingsubtlein-triguesmeandpushesmetocontinuedevelopingmyskill.

Findinganobjectandgivingitanewpurposeisapassionofmine.Thewingbackchairsbelowareevidentandhavebeencustomreupholsteredbyme.Thebluechairpicturedwastheoriginal,fromthatsprangthedan-delionchair,itsmatchwassoldtofinanceothers.

Thecoffeesackchairwasonitswaytothedump,itsleatherhadbeenmauledbyalonelydog.Coffeesacksweredonatedbyalocalcoffeeshop.

Thisbrasshangingincenseburnerwasdiscoveredonasec-ondhandshoptrip.Iwantedthispiecetobecomealamp,thisuseIbelievedre-elevatedthisrecentlydiscardedobject. Duetoitstraditionalreli-gioususes,Icarefullychosewhattocarvetointensifythelighttobecast.Ichosetocarvesacredgeom-etrypatternsintoitssurface.Pleas-antly,duetoitsformeruseafterthemetalwarmsslightlyfrankin-censeisreleasedintotheroom.

Dailyaminimumofonehourwasdedicatedtowardsketchingthecurrentenvironment.Theamountofdepthandcharacterfoundinaspacebeginstorevealitselftoyouasyouaresitting,drawing,andintegratingyour-selfintotheenvironment.
