ACCORDING to the 2013 Global FoodSecurity Index (GFSI) more than 870million individuals globally do not have asecure source of food. The annual report, which measures the state of food securityglobally, ranked South Africa 39 out of 107countries, while neighbouring countries inAfrica, such as the Congo, ranked last.According to Andy du Plessis, managing

director of FoodBank SA, these figuresreiterate the importance of raising awaren-ess around food security both locally andinternationally.“In South Africa, approximately 11

million citizens – a fifth of the population– are vulnerable to food insecurity, mea-ning they do not know where their nextmeal will come from. While many SouthAfricans live in food uncertainty, one thirdof food produced in South Africa goes towaste.”In an effort to address the growing issue

of hunger and food security, FoodBankSouth Africa (Foodbank SA), a registerednon-profit organisation and the country’snational food banking network, havelaunched their 12 Hour Fast campaign, which involves individuals donating R40towards the cause and committing to a 12hour fast on World Hunger Day on 28 May.Du Plessis says World Hunger Day is a

global annual event which celebratessustainable solutions to ending extremehunger and poverty.“By donating R40 and committing to fast

for 12 hours, individuals will not only beraising awareness for the cause, but willalso guarantee that one hungry SouthAfrican is fed for an entire month.”Participants are encouraged to take part

in the initiative by completing the onlineregistration form available on the Food-Bank website www.foodbank.org.za whichwill facilitate the donation and committhem to fasting for 12 hours, from 07:00 till19:00, on World Hunger Day.Du Plessis says while fasting for 12 hours

may prove to be quite a task for some, many individuals endure this each andevery day.“Fasting for 12 hours may be a challenge

for us, but we are comforted by the factthat we know where our next meal willcome from. What we don’t realise, is thatmany South Africans often go withoutmeals for longer than 12 hours each day.”In the 11 days leading up to World

Hunger Day, FoodBank SA encouragesparticipants to partake in their online 12Days of Appreciation campaign on theorganisation’s social media platforms. The campaign invites the public to post a

picture every day of what they appreciate,be it photos of family and friends, a pet orfavourite destination, and make use of the#12daysofappreciation and #FoodBank-SA12HourFast hashtags.“There are many things that we take for

granted each day, such as our daily meals. All South Africans value and appreciatedifferent things, and this initiative allowsus to share this with the world, as well asour collective appreciation on the 12th day,World Hunger Day.”On the 12th day Du Plessis invites

participants to do something special tocommemorate their fast.“At the end of the day we encourage you

to get together with family and friends tobreak your fast, while keeping in mind theimpact of hunger on the lives of millions ofSouth Africans.“We ask participants to share an image of

the meal they ate to break their fast on thesocial media platforms as this will illustratea combined effort from all South Africansto beat this growing issue.”Individuals interested in participating are

welcome to register on the FoodBank SouthAfrica website – www.foodbank.org.za.Join the conversation and interact with

GOING GREEN

DOES it really matter if we litter? As we look around our beautiful country,

we all too often see plastic bottles, cans, glass bottles, polystyrene containers andcups, plastic paper and a whole lot of otherrubbish littering our streets, our parks, ourhighways, our neighbourhoods, our shop-ping areas, our rivers and many otherplaces in the environment. No waste company or service can keep a

town or city clean when residents litter anddump illegally and randomly. If residentsjoin in in cleaning up their environmentand then keep it clean, we win because wehave a cleaner, safer and more hygieniccity or town. With so many other important issues

such as crime and violent crime, Aids, child abuse and unemployment, should wecare about whether we put our litter in thebin (or recycle where possible)?Should we care if South Africa and the

environment in which we live are keptclean?

Also a social issueLitter is both an environmental and

social issue:) It is unsightly.) It reduces the aeshetic appeal of publicplaces.) It costs the community huge sums ofmoney and time to clean up.) It causes blockages of the drainagesystem and flooding.)When it gets into the waterways, it cankill aquatic life.) It decreases oxygen levels when it decaysin water.) It can be dangerous to people.) It harms birds and other animals.) It creates a culture of lack of caring.) It costs the council a lot more money toclean up the litter than it costs them toempty bins.) It breeds rats which carry diseases andchew electrical and telephone cables.) Source: www.greenworks.co.za

TODAY the Kalahari Bulletin com-mences with a series called GoingGreen. The purpose is to inform the

community about keeping our towns

clean and share tips on how to dothis.Do you do something specific to

recycle?Do you have any other tips on how

you make an effort to save theearth?Send your tips and ideas to

[email protected] orcall her on 079-831-5579.

WHY do people litter?) They lack self-respect – they don’t careabout themselves and therefore don’t thinkit is important that they live in a cleanenvironment.) They lack respect for others – they don’tcare how their actions and behaviourimpact on others.) The lack of respect for the environment.) They don’t want to take responsibility forcleaning up and taking care of the environ-ment.) They are lazy and think it is someoneelse’s job to clean up.) Sometimes they just don’t know anybetter and should be educated about this.

IMAGINE it is your turn at home todo the dishes. Your family membersdo not put their dirty dishes in thesink, but leave them lying around inthe house. You would need to go around and

collect each plate, dish, cup, knife, fork, spoon and glass before you canwash the dishes. It is still your job to wash the

dishes, only it takes longer and it ismore effort because no one helps.Street cleaners and garbage

collectors will still have their jobs, even if we do not litter. So let’s berespectful and assist them by puttingour garbage in the bin.

It matters ifyou litter
