THE Kathu policewould like to informthe residents ofKathu and itssurrounding areasof the dangers of thestreet drug callednyaope.Nyaope (also

known as whoongaor wunga) is ahighly addictive, dangerous anddestructive street drug uniqueto South Africa.The drug made a name for

itself between 2000 and 2006 inthe Tshwane (Pretoria) town-ships of Soshanguve, Attridge-ville and Mamelodi.Users are so desperate to

make the drug that gangs haverobbed anti-retroviral clinics inSoweto.A single hit can cost as little

as R30 for a parcel or straw andis smoked by heating thecocktail of ingredients andinhaling the fumes.What are the effects of using

nyaope?Initially users feel euphoric

or, when using heavier doses, awonderful sense of relaxation,but the effects soon wear offand another hit is required.For some users the less

pleasant side effects includestomach aches, muscle crampsand generally feeling really ill,but when these ease up, theyuse nyaope again.Experts say just using it once

is enough to get users hooked –similar to heroin addiction.Withdrawal is said to be

especially harrowing andinclude symptoms of stomachcramps, insomnia, diarrhoea

and vomiting.Nyaope is a

cocktail of illegaldrugs.Both heroin and

dagga, which arethe main narcoticingredients ofnyaope, are listed asundesirable depen-dence-producing

substances in the Drugs Act.Some of the drugs are also

reported to contain crystalmeth.According to some police

experts and drug rehabiliationcentres, nyaope is essentiallyjust a rebranding of olderheroin-based drugs.It is not always clear what

else nyaope consists of and theingredients vary from place toplace.Some of the alleged ingre-

dients are a cocktail of anti-retroviral drugs, milk powder,rat poison, bicarbonate of sodaand pool cleaner.Users also report that, when

using nyaope, they can go fordays without eating, which inturn weakens their immunesystem and makes themvulnerable to infection.) Individuals that wish to seekhelp can contact the SouthAfrican Narcotics Anonymoushelpline at 083-900-6962.Kathu also has a local support

REUBEN MURPHY, ’n gr. 12-leerling aan die HoërskoolUpington, gaan Saterdag aandie eindronde van die Spon-taankompetisie deelneem.

Dit vind op die Vryfees indie Blêrkas op die Universiteitvan die Vrystaat (UV) sekampus plaas.

Reuben is in Mei as diestreekwenner van die Upington-uitdunronde gekies.

Die Spontaankompetisie wasvoorheen net ’n sangkompeti-sie, maar vanjaar het dit syvlerke gesprei om ’n groterverskeidenheid van talent in tesluit.

Dit is juis danksy dieverbreding van talentmoontlik-hede dat Reuben sy staalgetoon het. Tydens die uitdun-ronde wat deur die KalahariBulletin in die Naba Lodgeaangebied is, het Reuben diegehoor laat skaterlag met sykomiese optrede.

Met sy fyn kwinkslae en die

manier waarop hy grappender-wys na aktuele sake verwyshet, het hy die skare laat kraaivan die lag.

Volgens Neville Schubach,Reuben se drama-afrigter, isReuben werklik ’n geborekomediant.

daagliks tyd in vir die mense naaan jou, wat hopelik onder dietopdrie voorkeure in jou lewe is.Probeer jou bes om jou geldsake

sorgvuldig te beplan, want as jysonder ’n begroting en geldelikedissipline lewe, stamp ’n mens dieeen of ander tyd jou kop.Moenie wag om hulp in te roep

van kundiges as die faset van joulewe in ’n chaos is nie (en moenieskaam of sleg voel nie, dit is diegeval in die meeste mense selewe).Hier volg sommer nog ’n paar

wenke om jou lewensgehalte teverbeter:) Die TV is ’n gevaarlike tyd-rower. As jy jouself (of jougesinslede) betrap dat julledoelloos tussen kanale rondswerf,is dit tyd om die masjien af teskakel en iets sinvols te doen.) Wees goed vir jouself. Maakseker jy doen gereeld iets watopbouend en positief vir jou is.) Wees goed vir die mense omjou. Probeer om gereeld iets goedsen moois vir hulle te doen, al isdit net om ’n sleurwerkie oor teneem.) Maak seker daar is ’n gesondetaakverdeling in die huis. Ditbeteken veral die ma in die huisword beskerm teen byvoorbeeldkinders wat hul goed oral laatrondlê vir haar om op te tel.) Probeer om minstens een keerper maand as gesin iets lekkerssaam te doen.) Kom gereeld in die buitelug enervaart en waardeer die skoonheidvan die omgewing.) JULIE is altyd vir my ’n heerlikemaand. Die lang skoolvakansielaat ’n mens weer asem skep endie lekker lê en lees onder ’n spulkomberse is altyd een van mygunsteling-maniere om af teskakel.Dit wat Julie egter besonders

maak, is Mandela-dag, oftewelMandela-maand.Dit is altyd vir my heerlik om

die innoverende maniere te sienwaarop mense veel meer as net 67minute afstaan om ander te help.Van al die maniere waarop

Nelson Mandela mense aangeraakhet, is Mandela-dag vir my diekosbaarste.Dit is hoe ek dink elke mens

onthou moet word. Elke mensmoet daarna strewe om op diémanier sy nalatenskap te skep.As elkeen probeer om op sy of

haar verjaardag iets goeds oor diewêreld heen vir ander te doen,ander te help en ander mense se

nood te probeer verlig is geenmonumente of name op naambor-de nodig nie.Dit is elke jaar vir my wonder-

lik om te sien hoeveel hoogge-plaastes op dié dag hul das enbaadjie uittrek en self ’n huisverf, self nuwe vensterruite insiten self vuil word vir ’n goeie doel.Op dié dag verval titels en

posbeskrywings en werk almalsaam om ander te help en só ’nklein bietjie verligting in die kouete bring.Dit is so maklik om vasgevang

te raak in jou eie probleme, maaras jy hoor van mense wat onder ’nboom bly, kan jy nie kla nie.Mag mense my asseblief nie

onthou oor alles wat ek bereik hetnie, maar eerder oor alles wat ekgedoen het.

to create handmade artwork.Mphahle came to South Africa

in 2009 to escape poverty inZimbabwe. He attended theNdima Primary School and herehe was taught his artistic skills.This versatile artist can create

almost anything using wire andhis hands. His products includetrees, animals and toy cars madeof wire.Even though it is difficult to

find employment withoutqualifications, he is dedicated tomaking an honest living throughhis art.Mphahle sells his art in Riet-

bok Street next to OK Furniture.

conflict resolution.Activities on the third day of

the course encouraged thestudents to re-evaluate theirpersonal boundaries, explored thedetrimental consequences ofalcohol and drugs and looked atnetworking and decision making.On the last day the students

presented a life-sized paper dolldepicting the expectations andimprovements of their future self.This life skills development

DIE perdeklub in Kathu het werklik ruitersuit die boonste rakke.

Van die klub se ruiters het onlangs aandie wêreldbekende Fauresmith 200-uithouritdeelgeneem.

Dit is een van die wêreld se moeiliksteuithouritte en ruiters van oor die wêreldheen kom neem jaarliks aan die wedrendeel.

Die uithouwedren is ’n uitmergelende200 km ver waarin ruiter sowel as perd hulstorie moet ken.

Daar het sowat 380 deelnemers wegge-spring en slegs 130 van hulle het die

wedren voltooi.Dus het 56% van die ruiters uitgeval,

terwyl 44% vasgebyt het en oor die wen-streep gegalop het.

Die uithourit is gewis nie vir “sissies”nie.

Ruiters ry oor drie dae. Dag een en dagtwee bestaan uit drie bene, terwyl dag drienet twee bene het.

Die bene strek oor van 21 km tot 27 km.Die Kathu-perdeklub se ruiters het die

dorp se naam hoog gehou.Lana van der Merwe was op haar perd

Elanzia LaMeh 21ste in die senior stan-daard-gewigafdeling.

Johnny Fourie was 15de in die juniorafdeling met sy perd Rakib Malik.

Joburg Dilolo was op sy perd Rakib Aaleeig Baal 15de in die standaard-afdeling.

Een deelnemer wat regtig bo al die anderuitgetroon het, is Sanguine Whitehead. Diejong ruiter is net 12 jaar oud, maar is al ’nervare ruiter. Hy het vyfde op sy perdRakib Amora klaargemaak.

Die Rakib-perde is almal van Tops vander Linde se stoetery.

Drie van Van der Linde se perde het dieuithourit voltooi.

Whitehead sê so ’n uithourit is glad niekinderspeletjies nie.

“Dit is moeilik. Jy moet kyk dat jy nie tevinnig wegspring nie en jou spoed die ritdeur dophou.

“’Jy moet ook namens jou perd dink.”Dan is daar die verraderlike gate, slote en

klippe wat vermy moet word – nogtans sêhy hy geniet die perdryery geweldig.

Die jong ruiter het die jaar se EnduranceRide Association of South Africa- (Erasa)kinderruiter van die jaar-trofee gewen.

Hy bedank almal met wie se perde hy oordie jaar heen kon gery het en ook diegenewat tot sy sukses bygedra het.

Die oneindige ondersteuning wat hy vansy gesin ontvang het, waardeer hy verderbaie.

Die Kathu-perdeklub bedank die KalahariCountry Club vir die baadjies wat dieonderneming vir die ruiters vir die geleent-heid geborg het.
