THE Kathu police areinvestigating an inquest aftera fatal accident had occurredin Ian Flemming Road inKathu.The accident occurred on

26 July at approximately21:25.The driver allegedly drove

from the Voëltjie Club whenthe vehicle hit a tree andoverturned.The driver passed away on

the scene.The deceased was allegedly

thrown from the vehicle as hewas found on the tar roadwith severe injuries.

THE Kathu police are investigatinga case of theft out of a vehicle anda case of malicious damage.The incident occurred on 25

July. The complainant parked hisIveco taxi in front of a house inMapoteng, near Kathu. On 26 Julyat approximately 03:15, he wasawoken by a friend who informedhim that the taxi was on fire.He found that the window had

been broken and the radio, as wellas the spare wheel, had been stolenbefore the taxi was set alight.

COBUS WIESE, ’n gr. 11-leerlingaan die Hoërskool Upington, isgekies om as deel van dieSuid-Afrikaanse skolerugbyspanin Augustus teen Frankryk,Wallis en Engeland te speel.

Die span gaan op 15 Augustusteen Frankryk in Kaapstad speel,op 19 Augustus teen Wallis inGeorge en op 23 Augustus teenEngeland in Stellenbosch.

Cobus is die enigste rugbyspe-ler van die Noord-Kaap wat virdié span gekies is.

Vir Cobus is dit nog halfonwerklik dat hy een van die daein Springbok-kleure op die veldgaan draf.

“Ek was baie verbaas dat ekselfs vir die proewewedstrydegekies is, want normaalweg kykdie keurders nie juis na dieplattelandse spanne nie.”

Hy beskryf die proewe as “baieharder as skoolrugby en dietempo was baie vinniger”.

Cobus, wat gewoonlik op slotvir Upington uitdraf, is op flankvir die proewewedstryde gekies.“Dit was moeilik aan die begin,maar die afrigter het vooraf vir

my gesê wat hy van my verwaghet en die game plan was netsoos ek gewoond is.”

Elmarie vertel laggend dat synie weet of Japie of Koos, Cobusse pa, die meeste knope van trotslaat spat het nie.

Cobus is, is op sy dag vir dieGrant Khomoweek, die Akademie-week en die Cravenweek gekies.

Jasper, wat net 17 maande oueras Cobus is, is ook vir die GrantKhomoweek gekies en is in gr. 11en gr. 12 vir die Cravenweekgekies. Hy speel nou in dieo.19-Cheetah-span.

Hul enigste sussie, Maretha, hetprovinsiaal netbal gespeel.

Dié sportiewe kinders het hulsportgene by hul ma geërf. Sy hettot op 23 vir Noordwes-Kaapnetbal gespeel en tot op 28 “so op’n aflosbasis vir hulle gespeel”.Sy het ook in atletiek gepresteer.

Road safety startswith every driverWITH the death toll risingon the country’s roads due toreckless driving, an effortmust be made to curb suchirresponsible behaviour.

A recent death occurred inKathu where a vehiclecollided with a tree due to ayoung man’s recklessdriving. The driver died onthe scene.

Despite more than 840 roadblocks and 3 800 arrests fortraffic infringements duringthe end-of-year holidayseason in 2013, the death tollon South Africa’s roads haschanged little from 2012,with 1 357 people losing theirlives between 1 December2013 and 7 January 2014.

Government-led roadsafety and safety awarenesscampaigns over the past fiveyears have yielded littleprogress.

There are several mannersof reckless and irresponsibledriving. This includes:) Speeds too high forconditions, especially, duringinclement weather and at

night;) Dangerous, reckless andinconsiderate driving,particularly barrier lineinfringements.) Abuse of alcohol bydrivers and pedestrians.) Fatigue.) A lack of vehicle fitness,particularly tyre failure anddefective brakes.) Pedestrian negligence (jaywalking, walking on free-ways, not visible at nightand drunken walking).

Transport minister DipuoPeters said that the govern-ment was planning to revokethe driver’s licences ofreckless motorists whobreach the rules of the road.

“One of the instrumentsthat we are going to use is tomake sure that people losetheir licence to drivebecause they are licensed todrive, but not to kill. We aresaying if you are reckless,you are not going to beallowed to drive, becauseyou are going to contributeto the increase of road

carnage.”The minister urged road

users and stakeholders toplay their part to reduceroad accidents and deaths,change road user behaviour,ensure voluntary compliancewith road traffic rules andmake road safety part ofeveryday life.

It is interesting andunsettling to note that themurder rate in South Africais very similar to the roadaccident fatality rate.

While the murder rate inSouth Africa is inexcusablyhigh and approximately fivetimes that of the worldaverage, it evokes anger andemotion while publicly thereis little or no emotionevoked by our road accidentrate. This is despite the factthat every road user inSouth Africa can play a partin reducing the roadaccident rate. Perhaps this isbecause it is easier to pointfingers and apportion blamerather than to acceptresponsibility.

OM te lees is vir my soosom asem te haal. Ek kanmy nie ’n lewe sonderboeke indink nie.

Daar is altyd halfklaargeleesde boeke oral in diehuis. Een langs die bad, eenlangs die toilet, een langsmy bed en selfs een langsdie stoof.

Die ander plekke is sekerverstaanbaar, maar die eenlangs die stoof moet ek dalkverduidelik. Dit is virwanneer ek moet roer. Niksis so sieldodend verveligsoos om ’n witsous te maakof vla te kook nie. Daaromdoen ek dit lees-lees.

My leesliefde kan ek nieverduidelik nie – dit is netdaar. En glo my, as ek ’npaar dae nie lees nie

Maar mag ek homasseblief nooit in die handekry nie.

(GDF) has prioritised education as itstop priority focus area. In this regard,the GDF invested in the gr. 12 learnersof Gamagara by hosting winter schoolprogrammes during the schoolholidays at Gamagara High Schooland Langberg High School in theGamagara Local Municipality (GLM).This programme is in corporationwith John Taolo Gaetsewe Develop-mental Trust (JTG-DT) and theDepartment of Education.The GDF’s goals and objectives are

to focus efforts and resources to servethe most vulnerable beneficiaries inthe designated areas of operation toinitiate a change to outcomes-basedinterventions, focusing on catalysingan inclusive economy for all beneficia-ries, to maximise the collaborativeefforts with government, agencies ofstate and like-minded non-governmen-tal and community-based organisati-ons, and take a greater leadership rolein advocacy and implementinginitiatives hence this initiative wasimplemented.This initiative was done with the

objective of assisting the gr. 12learners to improve their matricresults, assist them to qualify for theGDF bursary scheme and to increasethe bursary intake for 2015. This wasdone in coherence with the recentcampus tour and a career guidance atthe University of the Free State (UFS)in Bloemfontein that GDF organisedfor both the gr. 12 learners of Gamaga-ra High School and Langberg HighSchool. This was done to mostly urgethem to study harder and to ensurethat their matric results qualify themto go to a university and also qualifiesthem to get a bursary at GDF.Lepulane Maboshego, the CEO of

the GDF, said that this was anongoing initiative, as the GDF wouldcontinue to try and combat the lack ofskills and knowledge within theGamagara area. It will continue toensure that high school learnersobtain great results, mostly the gr. 12sin the GLM. He said that GDF wantedto encourage the learners to studyhard and he said that GDF alsowanted to encourage the communityof Gamagara and not just the learnersto be a reading community.Tebogo Bodumele, project manager:

Education and Skills Development,added by making reference to aprogramme that “Mine is Education”was currently running on Kurara FMin partnership with GDF, JTG-DT,SIOC-cdt and the Department ofEducation, which is a prescribedliterature review programme for gr. 12learners on Dr John Kani’s book,Nothing but the truth. The programmeis broadcast every Saturday from 15:00until 16:00 on Kurara FM. He conclu-ded by encouraging the learners tocome and collect the bursary applicati-ons from the GDF offices, the GDFwebsite www.gdf-trust.co.za and at theGLM at the youth centre.

DIE Kolomela-ysterertsmyn hetMaandag ’n rekord opgestel toesowat twee miljoen ton ertsdraen-de materiaal in een ontploffing uitdie aardkors losgeskiet is.

Gert Schoeman, woordvoerdervir Kumba Iron Ore, sê dieontploffing in die Kapstevel-gebiedhet onder streng toesig plaasge-vind en deeglike veiligheidsmaat-reëls is toegepas.

“Sowat 940 ton plofstof is binne3,5 sekondes gebruik om die ertslos te skiet. Dit het ’n gebied van4,6 ha beslaan.” Die voorbereidingvir die ontploffing het sowat tweemaande geduur.

Die uitmerk van plekke waargate geboor moes word, het op 12Junie begin en het sewe uurgeneem.

Daarna is 2 542 gate teen ’ndiepte van 17,45 meter geboor. Dielading van die vloeibare plofstofwat in die gate gepomp word, hetop 20 Junie begin.

“Die gemiddelde ontploffingskiet sowat 400 000 ton materiaallos. Die myn se grootste ontplof-fing tot nou het sowat 1,6 miljoenton materiaal losgeskiet.”

Aart van den Brink, Kolomela-mynbestuurder, sê die ontploffingsal help om hul teikens te bereik.

“Dit gaan ook bydra tot goeieproduksievermoë soos in diemynplan uiteengesit.”

Die Kolomela-myn voorsienystererts vir die uitvoermark. Diemyn het ’n jaarlikse produksieka-pasiteit van tien miljoen ton erts.

Die produksie vir die eerstehelfte van die jaar het met 4% tot5,5 miljoen ton gestyg.
