The British asparagus season traditionally begins on 1st May and runsfor around seven to eight short, but delicious weeks, lasting just eightweeks, ending on Mid Summers Day, Saturday, June 21.

British asparagus is hailed by leading chefs as the best in the world.While we might all grumble about the British weather, the UK climateallows asparagus stems to develop slowly producing a full, sweetflavour and a fine, tender texture quite unlike any other crop. And be-cause it’s grown on our doorstep, we can enjoy British asparagus atits most flavoursome and nutritious – that’s no doubt why, during theseason, we eat every last British asparagus spear ourselves, not oneis exported overseas.

Antony Worrall Thompson says: “Everything tastes better when it’sbeen harvested here in the UK. This is particularly true of asparagus.The beginning of the asparagus season is a highlight of the culinaryyear.”

Remember British asparagus is only in season for a short while. Don’t miss the chance to taste it. Lookout for it in supermarkets, greengrocers and farm shops now and feast while you can!

British Asparagus SeasonDon’t miss the chance to taste it

Seared tuna with oven-roasted asparagus,mushrooms & cherry tomatoes

YOU WILL NEED:450g British Asparagus225g button mushrooms1tbsp olive oil12 cherry tomatoes1 clove of garlic, crushedFreshly ground black pepper4 x 175g tuna steaksA handful of fresh basil leaves1 lime, cut into 4 wedges

WHAT TO DO:1.Clean the asparagus, trim any white ends and peel with avegetable peeler if necessary.

2.Preheat oven to Gas mark 5, 190°C, 375°F

3.Toss the asparagus in 2 tsp of olive oil, mix with the garlicand black pepper and transfer to large baking sheet.

4.Roast in the oven for 5 minutes then add the tomatoes.Roast for a further 10 minutes or until the asparagus is justtender.

5.Meanwhile, brush the tuna with the remaining oil andseason with black pepper. Heat a non-stick griddle pan onthe hob. Once the pan is really hot, add the tuna and cook for1-2 minutes either side or until cooked to your liking.

6.Toss the roasted vegetables with the basil and spoon ontowarm plates. Top with the tuna steaks and serve immediatelygarnished with lime wedges.

HOW TO PREPARE NAKED ASPARAGUSBoiling or steamingIt is a good idea to tie the asparagus in bundles of10-12 spears for cooking, so they can be quicklyremoved from the water all at once.To boil: sub-merge in a large pan of boiling water, cover andcook for 3-6 minutes. To steam: stand the asparagus in 3 inches of boil-ing water, cover and cook for 3-6 minutes.

RoastingRoasting and chargrilling produce an intense smokyflavour quite distinct from boiling or steaming.To roast: pre-heat the oven (220°C, gas mark 7),place asparagus on baking sheet and drizzle over alittle olive oil. Roast for approximately 10 minutes,turning a few times depending on the thickness ofthe spears. Stems should be soft, not limp, tipsshould be slightly crunchy.

And what about rabbits? They are now thethird most popular pet in the UK but theyare also one of the most likely to bedumped. There aren't many rescue centresfor rabbits and those that do exist are al-ways bursting at the seams. Also, all rab-bits are cute, so you won't be missing outon the 'arrr' factor even if you get a grownup one!

When most people consider getting a newpet, their thoughts turn to a cute bundle offluff. Certainly a puppy or kitten will pro-vide hours of entertainment but they canalso be a lot of hard work. However, thisdoesn't mean you can't have a pet, withrescue centres over-flowing with readytrained adult animals, you could just findyour perfect companion!

The first problem when you want a new,young animal is where to get one from. Itcan be difficult to know how to find abreeder who will have produced the pups orkittens responsibly. Sadly, many young an-imals are bred by those in it only for themoney, the worst examples being thepuppy farms, who make big efforts to hidethemselves. This is an advantage of therescue centres, many of whom will have lit-ters as well as adult animals, you know byhoming an animal from them you are notsupporting poor breeding practices Even ifyou want a particular breed of dog or cat,don't count out the possibility of a rescueone, most breeds will have at least one res-cue club.

Young animals, although lots of fun, can bevery hard work to look after, particularlypuppies. In the early stages they can't beleft alone for long periods and few sleepthrough the night straight away, which canbe tiring to say the least! It can also takesome time for them to establish good toilettraining habits. You can't be too house-proud with a young animal, not only do youget 'presents' on the carpet, some are pro-lific chewers and, particularly with the

The half moon manicure is taking the fashion andbeauty world by storm, it's a new look in nails andeveryone is willing to try it. After all it's a twist to theclassic look of french tips so why not try it on yournails.

Designers such as Christian Dior, Thakoon and Ruf-fian have all tried the looks in their shows and nowyou can too!

This is a 1940’s classic look, where the 1/2 moonshape at the base of the nail is left bare, creating aclear cool silhouette.

The British asparagus season traditionally begins on 1st May and runsfor around seven to eight short, but delicious weeks, lasting just eightweeks, ending on Mid Summers Day, Saturday, June 21.

British asparagus is hailed by leading chefs as the best in the world.While we might all grumble about the British weather, the UK climateallows asparagus stems to develop slowly producing a full, sweetflavour and a fine, tender texture quite unlike any other crop. And be-cause it’s grown on our doorstep, we can enjoy British asparagus atits most flavoursome and nutritious – that’s no doubt why, during theseason, we eat every last British asparagus spear ourselves, not oneis exported overseas.

Antony Worrall Thompson says: “Everything tastes better when it’sbeen harvested here in the UK. This is particularly true of asparagus.The beginning of the asparagus season is a highlight of the culinaryyear.”

Seared tuna with oven-roasted asparagus,mushrooms & cherry tomatoes

YOU WILL NEED:450g British Asparagus225g button mushrooms1tbsp olive oil12 cherry tomatoes1 clove of garlic, crushedFreshly ground black pepper4 x 175g tuna steaksA handful of fresh basil leaves1 lime, cut into 4 wedges

WHAT TO DO:1.Clean the asparagus, trim any white ends and peel with avegetable peeler if necessary.

2.Preheat oven to Gas mark 5, 190°C, 375°F

3.Toss the asparagus in 2 tsp of olive oil, mix with the garlicand black pepper and transfer to large baking sheet.

4.Roast in the oven for 5 minutes then add the tomatoes.Roast for a further 10 minutes or until the asparagus is justtender.

5.Meanwhile, brush the tuna with the remaining oil andseason with black pepper. Heat a non-stick griddle pan onthe hob. Once the pan is really hot, add the tuna and cook for1-2 minutes either side or until cooked to your liking.

6.Toss the roasted vegetables with the basil and spoon ontowarm plates. Top with the tuna steaks and serve immediatelygarnished with lime wedges.

HOW TO PREPARE NAKED ASPARAGUSBoiling or steamingIt is a good idea to tie the asparagus in bundles of10-12 spears for cooking, so they can be quicklyremoved from the water all at once.To boil: sub-merge in a large pan of boiling water, cover andcook for 3-6 minutes. To steam: stand the asparagus in 3 inches of boil-ing water, cover and cook for 3-6 minutes.

RoastingRoasting and chargrilling produce an intense smokyflavour quite distinct from boiling or steaming.To roast: pre-heat the oven (220°C, gas mark 7),place asparagus on baking sheet and drizzle over alittle olive oil. Roast for approximately 10 minutes,turning a few times depending on the thickness ofthe spears. Stems should be soft, not limp, tipsshould be slightly crunchy.

Spring was a long time coming this year. Local people are invited to join in a hugesingalong with a special version of last nightof the proms at Dudley Performing Art’s(DPA) summer festival.

The Himley festival chorus is looking forkeen singers to make up part of a massedchoir as the finale to the festival weekend atHimley Hall and Park on Sunday 4 July.

Singers will be accompanied by a live sym-phony orchestra on a professional, coveredstage, with DPA providing sheet music.

Songs include Jerusalem, Land of Hope andGlory, Zadok the Priest and Rule Brittania.Anyone wishing to join in will need to at-tend pre-show rehearsals which start inMay.

The first rehearsal will be held from 8 – 9pmon Wednesday 12 May at Saltwells Educa-tion Centre, Bowling Green Road, Nether-ton. Other dates include May 19, 26, June9, 16, 23 with a technical rehearsal at Him-ley on June 30.

The three day music and dance extrava-ganza kicks off on Friday 2 July with thehugely popular Rock the Castle event whichwill see 35 rock bands perform live gigs atHimley Park. During the weekend, audi-ences can see bands, dancers, choirs, or-chestras and Himley Crucible Theatre andtake part in workshops as well as enjoyingpicnics, a fun fair, circus skills, face painting,stalls and more. The massed choir makesup the finale of the whole weekend with aperformance at 5.50pm on Sunday 4 July.
