Award 2013-14
Mid-Year is here and there is no fooling around that Hacienda
Heights has the best Kiwanis Club! From Snopes.com… When the western world employed the Julian calendar, years began on March 25. Festivals marking the start of the New Year were celebrated on the first day of April be-cause March 25 fell during Holy Week. The adoption of the Grego-rian calendar during the 1500s moved the New Year to January 1. According to the most widely-believed origin postulated for April Fools' Day, those who could be tricked into believing April 1 was still the proper day to celebrate the New Year earned the sobriquet
of April fools. To this end, French peasants would unexpectedly drop in on neighbors on that day in a effort to confuse them into think-ing they were receiving a New Year's call. Out of that one jape supposedly grew the tradition of testing the patience of family and friends. Well today I do not intend to fool any of you, but rather thank each and every one of you for making the first 6 months of 2014-2015 so successful. A few weeks back I had the great privilege to honor three people with the Distinguished Ser-vice Award through the Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation. The awards were pre-sented at our Governor’s Visit Din-ner to Division 35. During the presentation, I shared that I be-lieve in the value of threes. There are three major areas from which every club needs support in order to be successful. We need out
communities, our families and our members. The Kiwanis Formula asks us to take action to help build the Kiwanis family especially in this 100th year of celebration. So as I announced each of our DSA recipi-ents, I shared with the attendees how they represented a piece of the formula. SHARE IT… Shezad Ramjin, Owner of Ashika Shoes. Without Shezad’s support, Shoes that Fit and the Heart and Sole event would not have the positive impact it has been able to have on our commu-nities. It is through his generous support of our program, that we are able to provide so many chil-dren new shoes. Shoes That Fit is help kids improve their self-esteem and fit in at school by eliminating one of poverty’s most visible and debilitating marks. (Continue on Page 7)

To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.
To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.
To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.
To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.
To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

Madame President Victo-
ria Davidson called the
meeting to 7:10 AM, she
performed pin & name
badge checks, collected
food cans for Del Haven,
and sold the opportunity/
split the pot tickets, thus
allowing ample time for all
members not to be late
for the meeting. Dan-
iel Stowell was requested
to offer the invocation,
and he delivered a inspir-
ing
one, LTG Mahmood Bashir
was asked to lead
the Pledge of Allegiance,
and he requested all to
place their right hands on
their left hearts, and fol-
low him in reciting the
Pledge. Mahmood explain
ed that the request to
place our right hands over
our left hearts was for the
benefit of our very
own Uber Right Charlie
Huff, because a lot of
Right Things, can be on
the Left Side, and that's
quite alright!!. Song Mas-
ter Dave Wallach led us in
the singing of the patriotic
song, "Grand Old Flag"
being his choice. Next we
introduced our guests,
Charlie Huff introduced
Scott Duncan, Madame
President introduced her
prodigal son Roberto Cas-
tillo, Lon Salgren
introduced Crystal
Espinosa, President of
Wilson Key Club, and last
but not least, Madame

Honorary Members Ted &
Nancy Strinz, who joined
us this morning and came
bearing gifts, they brought
books to be donated at
our Kiwanis One Day next
month. Following the in-
troductions, Madame
President led us in the
singing of our infamous
"Welcome Song". We did
have a couple of birthdays
to acknowledge this morn-
ing, Karen Sue
(Gino Kwok's better half)
had her birthday on
03/24/15, and Ray Jan's
birthday was 03/25/15,
we missed singing her the
Birthday song in person,
as she could not attend
the meeting. Madame

Duncan took the floor and
presented a progress re-
port on OGMS Law En-
forcement Academy.Scott
informed us that he is re-
tiring soon, and if a re-
placement is not found to
replace him, the LEA may
cease to exist at OGMS, he
requested us to write to
our school district admin-
istrators and request that
every effort must made to
save the program, as it is
very beneficial not just in
the general sense, but
specially for some at risk
kids. Just as Scott finished
his presentation, a few
additional guests arrived,
and Anna Wu introduced
them. They were all from
Wilson Key Club, LTG Key
Club D35W Austin Ly Key
Club D35W Executive As-
sistant Dylan Tran, and
D35W Spirit Task Coordi-
nator Amber Tai. It is be-
coming very normal at our
meetings to sing our
"Welcome Song" more
then once, yes we sang
the song again for our
additional guests. Once
the singing was done, the
Key Club members pre-
sented
Dave Wallach some flow-
ers wishing him a quick
recovery from complica-
tions resulting from the
procedure/surgery he had
on one of his eyes recent-
ly. It was indeed a sweet
gesture, one filled with
LOVE! Members in attend-
ance were Madame Presi-
dent Victoria Davidson,
Charlie Huff, Grace Chan,
Izzeldin Osman, Lon
Salgren, Dave Wallach,
LTG Mahmood Bashir,
Anna Wu, Robert Barba (a
nice surprise),
and Daniel Stowell. Our
guest Austin Ly was re-
quested to pull the win-
ning ticket for our "split
The Pot",
and LTG Mahmood Bashir
gave him his tickets and
requested he pull one of
his. Austin pulled the tick-
et, and yes he did pull one
belonging to Mahmood.
Cant say if that is Good
Luck, a freak Coincidence,
or just plain old Kar-
ma!! Mahmood very hap-
pily collected $90.00 Kiwa-
nis dollars
($9.00). Madame Presi-
dent declared everyone
friendly making it a "Fine
Free" morning, and ended
the meeting at 8:30 Am as
we sang "Hail To Kiwanis"

Story by David Malkin Our speaker this week was Scott Duncan, instruc-tor, Orange Grove Middle School Law Enforce-ment Academy. Scott has spoken many times in the past at our club meetings and his students have assisted our club in many activities. Stu-dents in grades 7 and 8 who quality for the Law Enforcement Academy study the administration of justice and public safety in preparation for col-lege and a professional career. The Orange Grove Law Enforcement Academy School Police Explorer Program is the only school-based Police Explorer program in the nation. Mr. Duncan works closely with the HLP School Police Department & Police Officers who serve as coordinators & advisors. Students examine the chain of command, discipline, close order drills, courtesies, and core values of military services as they apply the training for a public safety official. Students engage in rigorous physical and academic training. Mr. Duncan shared with us that the students of Law En-forcement Academy has been honoring our fallen heroes with the KIA Flag. The KIA Honor Flag Or-
ganization honors and remembers our Na-tion’s heroes for the ultimate sacrifice they have made for our country, our freedom, and freedom abroad. All students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and will be put on probation with a GPA of 2.0-2.9. They must be able to maintain a 3.0 in Physical Education with a 10-minute mile. Annually, the Academy presents a Memorial Day Event, Veterans Day event and partici-pates in the I Love America Parade on July 4th, and Ribfest Scholarship Dinner by providing traffic and crowd control.

(Continued from Page 1) And through this program, our club and our partners are improving our communities one child at a time. LOVE IT… Nancy Bashir, First Lady Division 35, Previous two time First Lady Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights, and member of Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights. Nancy has been a vital support not only to our LtG Mahmood this year, but has served as a “First Lady” back to back years, first for the club now for the Division. During Mahmood’s first club presidency, she joined our club as a member. For years, Nancy has been the background force in the success of our annual RibFest solic-iting donations and support of our auctions. She has served as advisor and worker-bee on many of our hospitality events. Finally, she cares enough about our success to “tell it like it is” and make us take the criti-
cal look that not everyone is willing to push for, but she does it with a style that makes you feel good about it when it is done. Whither through scouts or Kiwanis, I am very grateful to be able to call Nancy my friend and appreciate the advice and guidance she may not have even realized she provided this year. LIVE IT… Lon Salgren, Region 13 Trustee, Past Club President and Division 35 LtG, and member of Ki-wanis Club of Hacienda Heights. Lon personifies living a Kiwanis Life-style for me. He doesn’t hesitate to invite others to a meeting. When the going gets tough, Lon steps up to make things better even when it means going out of his way. He joined the Kiwanis Family while in high school at Wilson. he continues to serve beyond the Division level.
When we weren’t sure how we were going to get our supplies for the division project, Lon went and picked them up and brought the supplies we needed to bag them for the boxes. All of this without a neg-ative word. I look forward to serv-ing many more Kiwanis years with Lon and supporting him in wherever his Kiwanis leadership takes him. Again, thank you for the honor of leading this great club in our anni-versary year. I look forward to see you all at the next meeting. In the meantime, have a safe week…. ~V~

Key Club District Covention
By Sarah Yee This year's Dcon was held at the Anaheim Convention Center. I was able to experience opportunities to benefit myself and members, such as attend workshops to learn what I can do to make next year the best. I learned what I can do as a news editor, and other lessons like how to bring in more members to the club. As I continued to attend seminars and region ses-sions, I realized Dcon was one of the key moments I would not let go. It was the fact that everybody came for one common thing, service. Dcon is to celebrate a whole term of accom-plishments, all while having a spirit aspect. The last night con-sisted of many tears, hugs, and joyful smiles. Many think that a journey ends there, but one has just started. Seniors who have been having PDS (Post Dcon Symptoms) dealt with the fact that their term was over, but realized their successors will continue on the road to greatness. I can not wait for next year's Dcon at Sacramento!

Division 35 Governor’s Visit
By Mahmood Bashir On Sunday, March 22nd Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club, be-ing the Home Club to our Divisiuon-35 Lieutenant Governor welcomed Cal-Nev-Ha District Governor Alan Guire to his official visit to our Division. We were well represented with Madame President Victoria Davidson and her son Nicholas, Madame President-Elect Anna Wu, Region-13 Trustee Lon Salgren, Dave Wallach, David Malkin and guest Shezard Ra-man, Tina Banes and her husband Keith, Robert Barba and his wife Debbie, Division-35 First Lady (The Boss) Nancy Bashir, and of course our LTG Mahmood Bashir. Our club presented three DSA’s to recognize valuable service to our club, to our communities, and to the youth of our communities. The DSA’s were awarded to Lon Salgren, Nancy Bashir, and our community part-ner Shezard Raman who has been instrumental with our “Shoes That Fit” program. The best surprise of the evening was the presentation of a Centennial Award from our club to Tina Banes, who recently donated one of her Kidney’s to her son Nathan, a veteran who has served our nation with honor, in the recent conflicts in the Middle East, and Afghanistan. Tina Banes received a standing ovation from all in attendance for this selfless act of kindness. Madame President Victoria Davidson was also pre-sented with her Centennial Award Pin, for her recent generous pledge to project ELIMINATE. Joining her was Mahmood Bashir who was presented with his Centennial Award for his recent contribution to the project. Indeed a proud moment for our club as each of these Centennials represents 833 lives saved for each pledge and contribution. A proud evening for our club, we appreciate and thank all who attended and helped during the festivities and celebrations. Lets keep up the good work we do, and do out part to “improve the world one child and one community at a time”

Servpro Grand Opening/ Charity Benefit
March 27th, 2015
By Anna Wu Servpro had their grand opening and charity casino night on Friday March 27th. Not only was it an exciting and fun event, but it was also an charity event to bene-fit our Kiwanis club—Project Eliminate and the Los An-geles Firefighters. For each person that attended they donated $5 to charity. Many of our members came out to help raise funds. In attendance from our club was Anna Wu and her hus-band Richard Lee and baby Kyra, Robert Barba and his wife Debra, Tina Banes and her husband Keith, David Malkin and his wife Teri, Kathy Young and her daugh-ter. We were also really happy and excited to see Duarte Kiwanis president Mirna De Lira Lopez and her husband. Thank you so much for Mirna for attending and helping us raise a few more dollars for Eliminate. With the free game play, free food, and open bar, a good time was had by everyone who attended. Thank you Servpro for hosting such a great event and we wish you luck with your new office!!

By Sarah Yee At the Hacienda Heights community center yesterday, families were able to enjoy a delicious break-fast and then take a picture with the lovely Easter bunny. Volunteers there happily made pancakes and helped set up tables for these smiling faces. It definitely made my day to see such young children so pleased with their pancakes and sausages. Waking up so early in the morning to lend a hand to the community has never been this enjoyable and satisfying. The pancake breakfast was a great way to start off spring break!
