To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.

To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

The Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights meets 7:00 am on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of every month at IHOP, 18261 Gale Ave, City of Industry. And 1st Wednesday, 6 pm, at Casa Blanca, 15922 Gale Ave, Hacienda Heights.

Madame President Victo-

ria Davidson was running a

bit late, so President Elect

Anna Wu in an effort to

get things going, called the

meeting to order at 6:10

AM. Charlie Huff was re-

quested to lead us in the

"Pledge Of Allegiance",

and not to surprise any-

one and throw them off

guard, he in his usual man-

ner requested all in

attendance to place their

right hands over their left

ventricular and join him in

saying the pledge. Our

Region-13 Trustee Lon

Salgren was requested to

offer an invocation, fol-

lowed by a patriotic song

lead by our home grown

"soprano" Dave Wallach.

"My Country tis of thee"

was his choice. Just as we

were getting done with

our rituals, Madame Presi-

dent made it to the

meeting to resume her

duties. We acknowledged

two birthdays, Tina Banes

(04/09), and Ted Strinz

(04/10). Madame Presi-

dent led us in the singing

of the "Happy Birthday

Song" and all in attend-

ance joined in very enthu-

siastically, we all sounded

much better than our nor-

mal selves. Next Charlie

Huff introduced our

guests, Former Profession-

al Baseball Player and a

Former Angel Mack Kuy-

kendall, joined by his asso-

ciates Mary Ann, and her

son Steven Collins. Mack

an his associates were our

program fr the morn-

ing. Madame President

led our "Welcome Song",

and our singing was actu-

ally better than ever,we

sounded good enough,

that our guests did not run

for the exit doors. We

spent a good amount

amount of time talking

about the details of our

upcoming "Kiwanis One

Day" Community Help

Fair, scheduled for April

11th. The discussion was

productive as a lot of plan-

ning for the pancake

breakfast, and lunch was

ironed out. Members in

attendance were Charlie

Huff, Grace Chan, Izzey

Osman, David Malkin, An-

na Wu, Lon Salgren, Dave

Wallach, Mahmood

Bashir, and Madame Presi-

dent Victoria Davidson.

David Malkin filled in and

performed the pin & name

badge checks and collect-

ed food cans for Del ha-

ven. Madame President

started selling the "Split

the Pot" tickets, and hand-

ed the task over to

Mahmood Bashir, who

gladly took over, selling a

ton of tickets, resulting in

a pot of $40.00 Kiwanis

dollars. Dave Wallach cir-

culated the RFL, ELIMI-

NATE, and Children's Hos-

pital donation cans. Mad-

ame President requested

our guest Mary Ann to

draw the winning ticket,

resulting in luck Izzey tak-

ing home the loot, forty

Kiwanis Dollars ($4.00).

Madame President

clanked the bell declaring

the meeting adjourned

at 8:15 AM, as we sang

"Hail to Kiwanis'.

(Continued from Page 1) This commitment means that when our club’s pledge is completed, we will have raised $750 per member to fight Maternal Neonatal Tetanus. It is equivalent to saving a baby a day for 23 years! But this is already our history. The next four weeks are busy for our club and while none of us can do all of it, we each need to do some of it. So figure out where you can jump in and support our club efforts. Can you come cook pancakes and eggs this Friday for the Senior Pathfinders? Will you be dropping your basket off to Susan Jacklin on Saturday morning for the RibFest Si-lent Auction? Are you able to walk the “track” at Relay for Life sometime this Saturday? Do you have time to attend the Division 35 prayer breakfast? Will you be there for Adopt a Highway on May 2nd? Have you con-tacted Mahmood to take on one of the duties for RibFest on May 3rd? Is there someone you can ask about advertising, attending or just buying opportunity tickets for the event? Will you consider joining the July 4th Parade committee or inviting someone in the com-

munity to join? When was the last time you planted a tree? You know Watershed Restoration is coming up on May 9th? Can you help “bartend” at the Taste of the Heights on May 13th? Are you able to help West Covina at the San Dimas Little League Pancake Breakfast on May 16th? Have you bought a ticket to support Troop 701 – La Puente’s Pancake Breakfast on May 17th? Are you exhausted just reading this list and realizing that it doesn’t even include SLP or the end of the school year events yet? We are a busy club, but our service truly makes a differ-ence in the lives of those we know and meet. I thank you all for what you have contributed to my family over the past few weeks and I look forward to the strength that our club provides our community in facing the challenges of the future. Stay safe this week. ~V~

Story by David Malkin We were honored last week to have a long term Kiwanian and investment specialist, Mack Kuykendall and two of his associates, Steven Collins and MaryAnn Collins as our guest speakers. Mack has two passions. The first one is “to provide kids of all ages the opportunity to learn life lessons through the coaching of America’s Pastime, to show them how to steal a base, but give from the heart: to hit a baseball, but to touch others; to be part of a team, to play for the greater good. Mack Kuykendall was one of baseball's early "bonus ba-bies”. He spoke about 'What I Wish I Knew". Now leading Sports Educators of America, Mack spends his time talking to young people about the importance of financial plan-ning, information not available to him as a young man. When he was playing baseball he earned a good salary and was one of baseballs first bonus players. However, he did not know how to manage his newfound earning power. Soon after he could no longer play baseball, he spent all of his earnings and savings. He now teachers others how to learn from his investment mistakes. Mack has formed a partnership with Steven Collins and MaryAnn Collins, which bring us to his se-cond passion, investing for retirement. Together they teach how to develop a Financial Needs Anal-ysis, which includes: - Cash Flow - Emergency Fund - Manage Debt - Build Wealth - Proper Protection - Preserve Wealth In Addition to the Financial Needs Analysis they presented information how to evaluate insurance for various purposes:

Life Insurance for when you are alive as well as when you die. Supplemental Retirement Income Insurance Terminal or Critical Illness Insurance Long Term Care Insurance

Service Leadership Programs

The weekend of March 27-29 I transported 13 youth to Key Leader camp in Julian. I'm losing count as to how many Key Leader weekends this makes for me. I have attended multiple Key Leader weekends in Julian in addition to one in Las Vegas and another in Yucaipa. This was the second Spring camp at Julian. Key Leader is a weekend experiential leadership pro-gram for today's young leaders. This life-changing event focuses on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership-development experience. A Key Leader learns the most important lesson of leader-ship—it comes from helping others succeed.

Participants attend a Key Leader conference, which is a weekend retreat. Large and small group work-shops, discussions and team-building activities take place over the course of the weekend. Students have opportunities to learn leadership skills that will help them to change their schools, communities, and world for the better. While exploring leadership in a whole new way, participants will make amaz-ing new friends and have experiences they will never forget. Positive, ongoing interaction with other Key Leader graduates offers continuing reinforcement, encouragement and growth of leadership skills. I especially look forward to watching the outdoor activities which begin on Saturday since they are al-ways changing to keep the challenges fresh for both new and returning Key Leader attendees. This year for one of the exercises the youth were told to pair-off and face each other with arms out-stretched in front of them. The person on the end would then break off and run through the middle of the other students. The pairs of youth would raise their arms just as he or she would run into them. I had never seen this done before. It reminded me a bit of a "trust fall" where you have to develop a trust in your fellow participants in your group. It did offer an opportunity for some great photos as I stood back from them directly in-line with the runners. Next the group exchanges with another group that has been at the "wall". This is probably the most anticipated event of the weekend. The wall is made of wood and is roughly 15 feet high. Each participant of the team must get over the wall. The strate-gy is not only how to get over the wall, but in what order. Once they have climbed the wall they stay at the top to help the next

The adult chaperones also participate in the indoor exercises, forming their own community, making posters, a cheer, community name, etc. All participants create a "mailbox" which is a brown lunch bag that is decorated with a photo of yourself and any creative artwork you are inspired to use. These mail-boxes are filled all weekend long with "Key-Leader-Grams". Participants are encouraged to write down words of encouragement or send congratulations for things they have seen others doing that week-end. One is also created for the camp cook to thank him for the great food! I have three things that stand out from this particular Key-Leader weekend. The first was my first wit-nessing a student pushing the "eject" button. Just after breakfast Saturday as the students were gath-ering in their seats to begin the day's lessons, a Mother came to pick up her son. I learned that he was having a bad case of homesickness. It is too bad, especially since much of the bonding of the youth comes from the outdoor challenges which would have taken place later that day. Hopefully he can re-turn on another Key-Leader weekend.

Spotlight on our Member

This year is Kiwanis 100th year anniversary, as we celebrate the history of Kiwanis, it’s also important to recognize the history of our members. Our club has been around for 50 years and many of our members have shared in our clubs milestones. To celebrate our 100th year anniversary, we will have profiles of our long stand-ing members here.

Our spotlight on member this issue is on Nancy Bashir!! Interviewed by Anna Wu In honor of Intentional Women's Day that just passed in March and mother's day coming up in May, I thought it would be fitting to inter-view the "woman behind the man" or more accurately as she is known "The Boss," Nancy Bashir. Nancy Bashir is a member of our club and has served as First lady two years in a roll. 2013-2014 Nancy was First Lady to our club as Mahmood was President. This year 2014-2015 Nancy serves as First Lady to our Division 35 as Mahmood serves as Lt. Gover-nor. Like the quote goes "No man succeeds without a good woman be-hind him" Anna: Nancy, first let me thank you for all that you do for our club (Hacienda Heights) and for our whole division 35. We are really lucky that Mahmood has you. Also congratulations on your recent Distinguished Service Award. It is definitely well deserved and I'm so happy for you. So first questions, when did you first join Kiwanis? Nancy: It was back in 2008, during Mahmood’s first presidency. We took advantage of the family member-

ship (and I believe we are the only one’s to date who have done that). Anna: And why did you join? Nancy: I was already helping with the Rifest & basically serving as Mahmood’s private UNPAID secretary, so it was only a natural progression that I join. Apparently. :) Anna: Now we know that your husband is Mahmood Bashir, Divi-sion 35 Lt. Governor. Tell us about the rest of your family. Nancy: We have 3 kids. Asif is 26, going to CSUF full time & working at Apple, full time. Asad is 23, going to Cal Poly Pomona

full time & working at Macy. Sara is 17, very involved in La Habra Height theater & dance, but will be graduating this year & heading to CSUF in the fall. Anna: We all know Mahmood is passionate about Kiwanis, what is something you like? Nancy: I have been involved in dog rescue & started a 501(c)3 rescue group about 15 years ago. We are very involved in saving pregnant dogs & unwanted underage litters (bottle babies) from high-kill shel-ters here in So Cal, then adopting them into wonderful homes when they are old enough & healthy enough. I was raised on a farm in Vir-ginia, so animals have always been a big part of my life. Anna: How did you and Mahmood meet?

Nancy: We met in college, in Virginia, about 34 years ago. We stared at each other for about a month, then he finally came over & introduced himself to me, assur-ing me he wasn’t some weirdo who just stares at people. The debate is still out on that one. We were married exactly one year later, in 1982. Anna: On the lighter side. If you could have dinner with anyone (dead or alive) who would it be and why? Nancy: That’s easy…….my parents! My dad died when I was only 19 & my mother died when I was 28. There are so many questions I would like to ask them, and I would love for them to meet their

grandchildren. My kids have missed out on an awesome set of grandparents, but I try to keep them alive through photos & stories. Anna: Awww… Thank you so much for sharing everything you did here. We are really grateful to have you and Mahmoud as members of our club. Thank you guys for everything you do.

Community Help & Resource Fair

By Anna Wu, Kiwanis One Day Chair On April 11th, 2015 Kiwanis club of Hacienda Heights hosted the Community Help & Resource Fair as part of their Kiwanis One Day project. Kiwanis One Day is a day each year all Kiwanis clubs around the world perform a day of service. Our service to the community was a two part fair. The Kiwanis club of Hacienda Heights provided 100 pairs of shoes to homeless students in the Hacienda La Puente United School District, along with school sup-plies and books. The Kiwanis club also provided a free pancake breakfast to anyone who attended. The other part of the fair was to provide access to resources to the community. The Kiwanis club included 16 non-profits and 2 local businesses. The event started at 8am and ended around 1pm. We had over 200 service leadership program youth volunteers from Division 35 East & West Key Club and Goldstone KIWIN’S. Thank you to all the people that came out to participate in the Community Help & Resource Fair!!

By Lawrence Chan John A. Rowland High School Vice President Key Club Spring break was almost over for Rowland and it would be great to take part in a service event for Row-land Key Club. It was a great oppor-tunity to take part in the monthly Adopt-A-Highway provided by the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis. Also, it was nice to meet some fellow Key Clubbers from Glen A Wilson Key Club. This was the first Adopt-A-Highway that I had personally taken part of, along with Yuan Feng, Samson Hui, Jessie Chan, Joy Lin, Samantha Cao, and March Suayngam from Rowland Key Club. Our group had five members from Rowland Key Club guided by Dave Wallach. We traveled along the west side of Colima Rd. for over an hour and picked up lots of trash, as well as 310 cigarette butts. This was a wonderful Saturday with really nice weather. It was nice to clean up the streets and make our com-munity a much better place. This was a really fun service project and I’m looking forward to future Adopt-A-Highway service projects along with Rowland Key Club.

Recess Relay—Newton Middle School

By Lon Salgren Last Friday there was a "Recess Relay" held from 2:30 to 3:45 at Newton Middle School. Ms. Kammert and the New-ton Builder's took the lead in planning and holding a Recess Relay to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. There was support from the after school program with several adults wearing a Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District t-shirt with "Mentor" on the back. We began setting up for the event around 1:30. I brought five 10 x 10 Kiwanis pop-ups and one personal pop-up. I also brought a 5 gallon IG-LOO filled with ice and water. I had an additional 2 gallons of water in a cooler to refill the jug when it ran low. It was a warm and windy day. Every bit of the water got used that afternoon. Roughly 150 participants con-tributed $3 and received a purple wrist band, bottle of water and a granola bar. There was an additional 50 participants at the event. Each participant got a hash-mark on their wrist band as they completed a lap around the field. The top three with the most laps recorded received a purple necklace filled with candy and treats. The wind came up just as the event began. It blew over one of the pop-ups that was not anchored. The wind also blew down EVERY triangle foam board Relay for Life sign that was placed on the inside of the field. There was a face painting booth which was very popular, quickly developing a long line for the two volunteer

face painters. There was also a table set up for participants to cre-ate luminaria bags which will be brought to the Hacienda Heights Relay for Life this coming Saturday April 25th. The Recess Relay raised approximately $740 in donations. Not b ad for just a little over an hour event. Lon Salgren and Victoria Da-vidson attended the event representing the Kiwanis Club of Hacien-da Heights. Maggie Serna-Loera our Relay for Life staff partner was on hand with supplies for the event. I am told that all 27 schools in the Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District that have an after school program will be holding a Recess Relay also. Thanks to eve-ryone that supported the event and participated!

The 39th KIWIN’S District Convention in Woodland Hills will be an event that I will remember for the rest of my life. It wasn’t like any other convention, because one of my closest friends Dennis Takeshita actually planned eve-ry single aspect of this past weekend. I found myself able to enjoy it more and more as time went by because I knew that my fellow classmates that served on district board worked their hardest to make sure that the district had a DCON that they’ll never forget—and they succeeded. The first night at DCON Glen A. Wilson was already in high spirits since we walked out of the first general session with 5 awards with 4 of them being in 1stplace. This feat did not end that night because we continued to sweep awards left and right; something that our club hasn’t been able to do in a very long time. Throughout convention Glen A. Wilson was put on the map, whether it be through winning awards or performing at the talent show, our name was written in the sky. By the last general session we totaled 25 awards but I came to the realization that it wasn’t about the awards anymore; but the lives that I changed and the people that changed mine. I thought about all my general members that thanked me for being a great president, the district board members that commended my club, the other general members talk-ing about how amazing Glen A. Wilson was, but most of all the support of my sponsoring Kiwanis. I’ve met a lot of Kiwanians in the past four years but none that compare from the crop that hails from the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis. You all have supported Glen A. Wilson from the very start from being chaperones at our Awake-A-Thon to paying for our supplies and to coming to our events and giving us a welcoming smile and encouraging hug. Ms. Wu, thank you for always communicating with me to find ways to include our club into all the events that you hosted. Your warm welcoming personality makes the environment so lively, which is something that you don’t get a lot of from any regular adult. Mr. Wallach and Mr. Bashir, you were truly the backbone of my support sys-tem and you never failed to be by my side when things got rough. Whenever I had to cry or yell out of frustration you both were always there to hug me until the negativity flowed away. I, and the rest of my club will forever be in debt for the service you have given us and it will be something I will remember for a very long time. The Haci-enda Heights Kiwanis has shown me that not all adults believe my generation is helpless, you all believe that we are capable of changing the world and that’s something that I hold very dear and personal to my heart. Thank you so much for always being there, and with a heavy heart it pains me to say “See you later” to the best Kiwanis a kid trying to make a difference could ever ask for.

By Lili Labaco President of Key Club at Glen A. Wilson High School What will Key Club accomplish by its 100th year anni-versary? Four score and seven years ago, our founding fathers created the best student-led organization to ever walk the face of the Earth, Key club. I have a dream that one day every student in the world will be ignited with the flaming desire to serve others because of Key Club. The beginning of these sentences are famous words uttered by individuals who dedicated their lives to serving oth-ers. Lincoln and MLK Jr. both had life changing experi-ences that molded them into servant leaders that took part in changing the world and its vision. Each and every single one of you are capable of creating the same or even greater impact than these two individuals made because we’ve all been exposed to the life changing experi-ence of key clubber fever. The only reason we’re even here is because this organization has somehow crawled its way into our hearts and infected us with the hunger for helping others and the thirst for making a difference. For those of us graduating, all it took was four years. Four years to not only get infected but to get consumed. We now live with the constant notion that we are worthy of making a change and that our age does not define the amount of impact we can make. In just four years, Key Club can create a mass army of high schoolers armed with the dedication to serve. If all it takes is four years, what’s in store for another 10? By its 100th year anniversary, Key club will become the island of misfit toys. It will become this because it will have taken high schoolers who believe they aren’t capable of greatness, group them together, instill confidence in each of them that they can change the world, and give them the time of their lives while saving lives. Key Club takes the phrase “You’re just a kid” and transforms it into “You’re not just a kid, you’re a person. And any person can make a difference.” By its 100th year anniversary, Key Club will become a home to people who are desperately in need for one. This organi-zation will save hundreds of high school students’ lives and shelter them with advisors that care and fellow class-mates that will make them feel safe and secure. It will give these students a family and support system that will forge a bond that is unbreakable. By its 100th year anniversary Key Club will have inspired hundreds of thousands of students, with more than a handful that will become the future leaders of this planet. It will have inspired the doctor that cures cancer, the president that helps their entire nation know and live peace, the leader that finally decides to put their country’s weapons down, the mother that is brave enough to raise a child on her own, the firefighter that leaps into a burning building, and the police officer that takes a bullet for his partner. Key Club will have molded the world’s future heroes, the ones who live by the code of selflessness. By its 100th year anniver-sary, Key Club will have single handedly changed the world because it focused on investing in the youth. See, the haters have it all wrong. They see a group of narrow-minded technology consuming teenagers but Key Club sees a group of innovative, visionary, students. Haters believe that community service can’t be enjoyable, but key club proves just the opposite. Time and time again Key Club has proven the haters wrong. But I guess the haters were right about one thing. We do make keys, keys to the future. ** Lili Labaco will go on to compete at Key Club International Convention in June. We all wish her Good luck!!

By Dave Wallach This past weekend the KIWIN'S held their District Convention (DCON) at the Warner Center in Woodland Hills. This year's theme was-"You've Got Mail" KIWIN'S De-livering World Class Service. There were over 600 in attendance ready to show their spirit, attend many worthwhile workshops, and select their new District Board. Los Altos High School and Glen A Wilson sent many students to DCON. Glen A Wilson was awarded for sending the largest repre-sentation. Anna Wu, Wilson Faculty Advi-sor Ricardo Recinos and Mrs. Recinos served as chaperones for DCON. This year the members were able to hear from 3 past KIWIN'S Governors. Kennedy Roberts, Gov. 2012-2013, spoke via video cam at the first general session and welcomed the KIWIN'S. Erika Gota, Gov. 2013-2014 spoke via video cam at the third general session, and Bernadette Lim, Gov. 2011-2012, was the Key Note Speaker and spoke on her experiences after KIWIN'S and into college. The weekend was filled with a lot of spirit and many recognitions. Glen A Wilson received many awards in many different cate-gories. They picked up first place in many areas and even won the talent contest. Adults were also rec-ognized for their efforts. Wilson Faculty Advisor Ricardo Recinos was recognized as Outstanding Facul-ty Advisor. Dave Wallach was upgraded to the Diamond 5 Level Dunlap for his contributions to the KI-WIN'S District Board. Governor Alan Guire also receive a Dunlap from the KIWIN'S District Board for his support of the Board. KIWIN'S District Administrator Margo Dutton retired her position after 10 years to pursue her position on the District Foundation as Vice President. As we know the ELIMINATE project is in its fifth year. KIWIN'S has been supporting the ELIMINATE project all year long. KIWIN'S held an ELIMINATE Concert in La Canada and than brought to Richmond, CA via video. The goal was to make over $5,000.00. If they raised over $5,000.00 Mahmood Bashir would let them shave his mustache off and Dave Wallach would let them shave both his beard and mustache off. They raised over $7,000.00. On Saturday afternoon Mahmood and Dave were shaved on stage in front of all the attendees. At last count KIWIN'S has raised almost $18,000 for ELIMINATE this year. The 2015-2016 KIWIN'S District Board will include Sophia Uemura as Goldstone LTG, Andrea Hu as the new District Bulletin Editor and Jade Wong as the new District Governor for KIWIN'S. All three girls are from Glen A Wilson High School.

AN AMERICAN HERO IN OUR MIDST Gunnery Sergeant Brian C. Jacklin Acceptance Speech

AN AMERICAN HERO IN OUR MIDST

By Susan M Jacklin United States Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton:;April 9, 2015, 10 am: I had the profound honor to witness my son Gunnery Sergeant Brian C. Jacklin of MARSOC Division Ma-rine Raiders, receive the Navy Cross Medal, our country’s 2nd highest military decoration awarded for valor for ex-traordinary heroism in combat. I could go on and on about the pride a mother feels for her son to witness such an epic even like this, a once in a lifetime honor to say the least, but, what I’d like to do instead, is to share the essence of my son’s feelings in his own words about that particular mission and the ensuing 2 days of battle it took to gain victory over the enemy. I honor the other men involved for their heroic deeds, and I hope you will be touched by the selfless acts and love these men have for country and themselves in a way you’ve never known or felt before. I love my son dearly, and love and respect all those he serves with, in past battles, this battle, and I pray that there won’t be a next. I can tell you that the brotherhood they share is unique and solid to the core within them all. I have been privileged to meet these men, the sons of other very proud mom’s….we are a united force, a fam-ily within, together for our sons of whom we are so incredibly proud to call “our hero”.

Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you all for taking the time to be part of such tremendous occasion. I would like to start by saying how proud and humbled I am to receive such a prestigious award. This is an honor that will remain with me throughout the rest of my life, and I thank you for the opportunity to represent both MARSOC and the Marine Corps in accepting it. However, the power and merits of this organization can never be measured in one’s actions alone. It is in the collec-tive bond we share throughout the course of our service together that enables the great acts of heroism and sacri-fice that have become the standard amongst the operators of our unit. Truly, this ceremony is a testament to the courage and devotion exhibited on a regular basis by rough men, ready to do whatever is necessary to make good on the faith that our brothers and command put in us. These are men who would rather die than live with the shame that they didn’t offer their last breath in service to the man to their left and right in battle. These men you see before you today, along with HM1 Walker and SSgt Pass, who cannot be here to due to opera-tional commitments, embody the very best that the Marine Corps and MARSOC have to offer. East man was shaped through immense trials of personal fortitude and dedication, giving all he had to offer at times when only the great pride of walking the path least traveled was there to keep him company. Through consistent discipline, drive and sacrifice, they have risen to the top of their trade and embody the ethos of the Marine Raider—a man who displays the very pinnacle of soldierly virture and unwavering loyalty; a man who will never quit or surrender, and will at all times stand ready to sacrifice whatever is needed to accomplish the mission. The men who swell the ranks surround-ing you today are these men, and stand as shining examples of what our nation entrusts its freedoms and respect to.

THETHETHE KIWANISCOPEKIWANISCOPEKIWANISCOPE April 21, 2015

There has never been a prouder experience in my military career than June 14th and 15th of 2012; not because of any-thing I did, but because of what I saw done by others. There is no way to express the magnitude of heroism AND destruction that is possible when men of extraordinary skill and tenacity lay everything on the line for each other. Nothing is more awe inspiring than the look of fellow operators’ faces as they are surrounded by death. The casual smile of confidence as they acknowledge that things will be as they will be, and if this is the way we die, then let’s do it right and honor our legacy. When surrounded on all sides by 7-8 times our numbers, we faced what seemed the inevitability of death as we attempted a daytime CASEVAC of our grievously wounded. Not a man before you here skipped a beat in their com-mitment to seeing their injured brothers home. All or nothing, death or glory, these men before you charged out into the heaviest barrage of fire I’ve seen in over 10 years of combat to get the job done. Their resolute determina-tion and violence of action, coupled with divine intervention secured the lives of Captain Herrera and Sgt Briere. I have no doubt that had we not been forged in the severest of training and God did not have a purpose for us in this life, we would not be standing here today. I would also like to acknowledge the other key players who kept us alive throughout the fight. To LtCol Brooks, and MGySgt Kelly, thank you for your tireless efforts to ensure we had every authority and resource necessary to turn the tide of momentum in our favor. You never questioned our actions on the ground, only what we needed to win. This trust in small unit leadership speaks volumes for what MARSOC has become, and its promise for future endeav-ors. To the brave aircrews of the close air support and CASEVAC platforms who routinely flew through hails of gunfire to kill our enemy and rescue our wounded, you are and always will be the guardian angels of the man on the ground, and deserve every praise we can offer. To our brave brethren of SEAL Team Three, who came out to reinforce and fight with us throughout the second day of carnage, your efforts and professionalism are not forgotten. These SEALs fought with us side by side, and at a cost of casualties of their own. As we move towards a future of integrated operations, I will always remember the steadfast valor exhibited by these men, and hold only the highest of esteem for their capabilities. Most importantly, I would like to thank our wives and families, who stand by us through our trials and successes, and who take a back seat to the teams at home so that we can go “live the dream” around the world; who often wait in vain for the men they love to come home, only to find that we are no longer as they remembered, but hard-ened and calloused to family life. Your struggles are infinitely harder than ours, and your payoff all too often falls short of that deserved. For the families of those loved and lost in service, most recently in the tragic helicopter crash off the coast of Florida, our thoughts and prayers are with you. You are, and always will be, family to us, hold-ing a sacred place in our hearts and by our sides. Finally, I have known no greater honor or satisfaction in this life than to have been afforded the opportunity to serve with the men who fill our ranks here today. I am eternally grateful to be accepted amongst them, and that I may hold my head high in their presence. The wisdom of our old breed, combined with the vigor of our new, inspires me daily to earn my place among these warriors. There can be no resting on our laurels here, for every day brings new challenges and triumphs, and we will always stand ready to meet them head on, with smiles on our faces and deter-mination in our hearts. Brothers, never above you, never below you, always beside you! Semper Fidelis.

As you all know, Ribfest-2015 is almost upon us, scheduled for May 3rd. This is a club fundraiser, and its success depends on how en-gaged you are, and will require effort from all of us. Its important that we make sure we have a successful event, if we are to fund all the good work we do for our community, the youth in our communi-ty, and all the help we offer to our community partners. Its time to concentrate on this effort in the next week and a half. Lets all get motivated, find the time, make some sacrifices, and as they say, get rolling. Use our standard donation to local restaurants, shops, and business whose services you utilize, and request them to donate. There re all sorts of avenues available, all that is needed is your effort to get do-nations. If each of our members is successful in securing at least one donation, that goes a long way to have adequate items for our silent auctions, specially when we add in the personal donation of a themed basket that each of our members is to provide. We have dinner tickets, and opportunity drawing tickets for you to sell. Let us know how many of each you need to sell. We all know people and have family and friends in our community, its up to us to reach out to them and ask for their support of our efforts. Dinner tickets sell for $35.00 each, or a table of ten for $300.00. We need to pre-sell as many of the opportunity drawing tickets as possi-ble. They are $5.00 each, or 4 for $10.00, or 10 for $20.00. We have plenty of them available, make sure to get some and sell, sell, sell. The key to success of this event is to have 300 plus in attendance, products on silent and live auction tables, getting as many sponsorships as possible, selling as many business card ad's as possible. All this won't happen without your active participation and effort. On the day of the event we need help with a lot of duties which need to be handled by our mem-bers. Please have a lookat the duty roster we emailed and let us know where you can be of best as-sistance. Just a few of us cant perform all the duties that day, it will require all of us to assist in one way or another. Lets not be complacent, lets all pitch in and help where we can.

GRAND OPENING AND RIBBON CUTTING ROWLAND HIGHTS COMMUNITY CENTER

Story by David Malkin This past Saturday Rowland Heights community cele-brated the grand opening of its new community cen-ter and Rowland High School Key Club members were there in full force as well as Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club. The event was combined with Safe Communities at which our club had a booth that was staffed by: Grace and Stephen Chen, Victoria Davidson-Castillo, and David Malkin and past first lady Teri Malkin. The event gave us the opportunity to share with about 2000 community members all of the great things Kiwanis Clubs do in the communities. We also had our collections cans on the table for Shoes That Fit and ELMINATE, which ended the day with some money in both of them. The community center, with over 19,000 square, at a cost of $18 million, was designed to reflect a center balanced by indoor and outdoor space with the two blending into each other with walls that fold away. In addition to Super-visor Don Knabe and other elected officials, John Rowland represented the founding family of Rowland Heights and Elijah Liu, from American Idol, sea-son 12, sang the National Anthem. Several restaurants were present giving out complimentary food including our wonder friends at Casa Blanca. The day concluded with an evening of international entertainment. The night started with Jacqueline Ye, Rowland High School Key Club President, and ASB Vice President, singing the National Anthem. Rowland High Key Club members were very involved in seating those in attendance and back stage helping the performers. The communities of Hacienda and Rowland Heights now have two beautiful community centers that will allow our Kiwanis Club to provide even more activities.
