CORPORATE MANAGEMENT AND MEMBERSHIPThe operator of the Karl Jaspers Clinic is the incorporated partnership Psychiatrieverbund Oldenburger Land gGmbH. The partners are the regional association Bezirksverband Oldenburg, the Ammerland-Klinik Westerstede, the Evangelische Krankenhaus Oldenburg and Klinikum Oldenburg.

FULL INPATIENT PSYCHIATRICCARE FOR THE REGION The clinic provides full psychiatric inpatient care for the districts of Ammerland, Vechta, Oldenburg, Cloppenburg, Wittmund and Wesermarsch and the cities of Delmenhorst and Oldenburg.

THE FOUR CLINICSThe Karl Jaspers Clinic (KJK) is a specialist facility for psychiatry and psychotherapy. The clinic has KTQ certifi cation and has since 2012 been a cooperation clinic for the newly established European Medical School (EMS) Oldenburg-Groningen. The Karl Jaspers Clinic has over 558 beds and around 830 employees. The range of medical care is offered in four clinics:

Clinic for General Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Treating patients for conditions within the schizophrenic

spectrum, manic-depressive conditions, personality disorders, acute stress reactions and at risk of suicide. Another focus of the clinic lies in the treatment of depressive disorders.

Clinic for Addictions and Psychotherapy The Clinic for Additions and Psychotherapy within the Karl

Jaspers Clinic offers a broad range of services within the spectrum of additive and psychotherapeutic treatment.

Clinic for Gerontopsychiatry and Psychotherapy The end of professional life, the loss of close family

and friends, physical illness or memory and attention diffi culties are a cause of crisis in middle to old age, possibly leading to depression, anxiety and confusion. Geronto psychiatry deals with this specialist fi eld.

Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Patients detained under § 63 of the German Criminal Code

(StGB) are those accused of a crime committed in a state of reduced or absent responsibility. The reason for this is generally a psychiatric disorder resulting in reduced control of impulses. The basis for hospitalisation is the Lower Saxon Law on Psychiatric Detention.

A Clinic for Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy with 30 beds is in the process of being established.

OTHER SERVICES OFFERED BY THE KARL JASPERS CLINIC

Day clinics The KJK has fi ve day clinics on the hospital premises, in

Westerstede, Delmenhorst, Cloppenburg and Brake with part-time inpatient treatment.

Outpatients Institute This represents a supplement to the psychiatric and

psychotherapeutic services of offi ce-based doctors and therapists. Patients are predominantly those with severe and chronic conditions who have already received inpatient treatment and/or those for whom hospitalisation can be avoided or its duration reduced.

KARL THEODOR JASPERS (1883 – 1969)

A citizen of Oldenburg, who was given the freedom of the city, was a psychiatrist and philosopher. He is one of the pioneers of a psychiatry in which the person is central.

Before he advanced to one of the leading German-speaking philosophers of the last century as an outstanding representative of what is known as existential philosophy, he worked as a psychiatrist and researched at the University of Heidelberg. His postdoctoral thesis on »General Psychopathology« remains a standard academic work to this day.

Internal diagnostics Since a psychiatric illness often goes hand in hand with

physical conditions, KJK has its own specialist internist department with diagnostic and therapeutic facilities (ECG, exercise and continuous ECG, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, x-ray, ultrasound, etc.) and a laboratory.

Social and art therapy The therapeutic range includes, among other things,

conversation therapy, music therapy, dance and theatre therapy, art therapy, ergotherapy, physical and movement therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy (e.g. gardening centre).

Social service centreThe social service centre is the place to go for all patients and relatives requiring assistance with social, family or occupational matters, both during the acute treatment period and in the planning of assistance following a stay in the clinic.

THE CAFETERIAThe cafeteria offers not only a range of drinks, fresh bakery goods and ice cream, but also little snacks, fresh salads and baguettes. Opening times: Mon – Fri 9.30 am – 8 pm; Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 10 am – 7.30 pm

THE KIOSKThe kiosk offers newspapers, magazines, postcards, toiletries, sweets, fruit and a limited range of small gifts. Opening times: Mon – Fri 7 am – 7 pm; Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 10.30 am – 5 pm

THE CHAPELAn ecumenical church service is held in the chapel in the grounds of the Karl Jaspers Clinic every Sunday at 9 am. The chapel is also open daily for anyone in need of a little peace.
