Please join us for the kickoff of our local, self-guided Kokomo Area Tour at Inventrek at 1 PM.The Kokomo-NC Indiana Solar Tour will include homes and businesses utilizing

renewable energy technologies. The sites will be available for public tours from 1 PM to 5 PMunless otherwise noted. For more info, contact Chris Rohaly at 765.480.4138 [email protected]. This local tour is coordinated by the

Indiana Renewable Energy Association (InREA), the state chapter of theAmerican Solar Energy Society. For more info about InREA, visit www.indianarenew.org

    National Solar Tour

Scheduled annually for the first Saturday in

October, in conjunction with National Energy

Awareness Month, the ASES National Solar

Tour is the world's largest grassroots solar

event. The event offers participants the

opportunity to tour homes and buildings to see

how their neighbors are using solar energy,

    energy efficiency, and other sustainable

technologies, to reduce their monthly utility

bills and help tackle climate change.

In 2008, nationwide, close to 140,000 attendees

visited some 5,000 buildings in 3,000participating communities. Now in its 15th

year, this event is coordinated nationally by the

    nonprofit American Solar Energy Society

In 2010, InREA (Indiana Renewable Energy

Association) will be hosting the first Kokomo

    area tour.

The 10 kW array just north of the Howard County Courthouse has been in service sinceApril 2009. The array is comprised of 48 Sharp 216W panels, and 2 Sunny Boy 6 kWinverters. The building renovation is still in process. A conversion to high-efficiency

lighting and a move to heat pumps for heating and cooling will reduce the electricityconsumption of the building to just over the annual solar system production, almostcompletely eliminating the electric bill.

This system was subsidized by an Alternative Power & Energy Grant from the IndianaDepartment of Energy & Development. The data from the inverters is available on the webfor those who are interested in tracking solar production real-time.

The array itself is not safelyaccessible for visitors, but thetour participants will be able tosee the inverters and speak withthe owner.

A 3.3 kW array just west of the Kokomo Municipal Airport has been in service since April2010. The array is comprised of 14 Sharp 230W panels, and 1 Sunny Boy 3 kW inverter. The mounting system is allows for seasonal adjustments of array tilt angle. The array

offsets usage of a grain dryer at the site. Using the Net Metering offered by Duke Energy, power production in the peak summer hours will offset the high electricity usage for the twomonths after harvest during which the grain dryer fans run constantly.

This system was subsidized by an Alternative Power & Energy Grant from the IndianaDepartment of Energy & Development. The data from the inverter is available on the webfor those who are interested in tracking solar production real-time.

This site was installed in Nov.2009, and we have the foundation ready for the second oneto be installed soon. They would be glad to be able to display "GO BABY" the name of theTurbine that was purchased for their anniversary gift to each other. They have ameter behind the meter-base at the end of the driveway that reads the total production of

the turbine in KWh. This will be a "drive-up only" site.

This passive solar structure was originally used as a restaurant. South-facing walls

contain large windows to capture more sun in months when the sun is lowest in the sky.The building captures & holds heat so efficiently, visits by larger groups of people wouldrequire the A/C to be run as late in the year as December.

The building is now used as another business. (Access from CR 1100 E.)

A 7.5 kW array on US 31 on the south side of Kokomo, the Sunspots array has been inservice since 2008. The array is comprised of 36 Sharp 210W panels, and 1 Sunny Boy 7

    kW inverter by SMA.

Duke Energy has been monitoring the performance of two ground mounted arrays, eachcomprised of 8 Evergreen 120W panels (0.96 Kw DC per array). One array is on a fixedmount, and the other is a one-axis tracking mount.

The single-axis tracker was manufactured by Wattsun. The Inverter is from Sharp, andhas two DC inputs (one for each array) and one AC output at 240 V.

The production data from the inverters is made available on the web for those who areinterested in tracking solar production real-time.

This array is 864 W (4 216W panels). The system is a roof-mounted grid-tied system. Each panel has its own microinverter rather than feeding all panels in series into a singleinverter. This type of system allows future expansion of production in increments of onepanel at a time. The system has been in service since February 2010. About 15% of thetotal electricity usage of the house has been offset.

Spring Creek Nursery owns a 6.3 kw system with a Sunnyboy inverter. On a good day itgenerates 40 kWh's. The system is on course for an annual total to be in the neighborhood

of 8000 kWh's. As a result of this system, the nurserys local utility (LMU) approved andpassed a true net metering policy. Since March, this array has returned more energy tothe grid than the nursery used! (Ready for winter)

The system qualified for a USDA REAP grant for rural businesses. Payback is scheduledto be less than six years.

A truly hybrid wind + solar system can be found at the residence of Terry Sarver. The

wind generator is 1.5 kw Bergey on a ~30 tower. The peak solar output is 330w (2panels rated at 165W each). They are wired to charge a battery bank and then push anyexcess generation to the grid. The system has sent around 750 kWh to the grid in the lastcouple years while keeping the battery bank fully charged.

Take Rt 25 North out of town to 450N, then turn east. This site is < 3 miles from site #7 onthe tour.

This storage warehouse in Denver, IN, is a complete off-grid solution. Local ordinances

require lighting in each bay and security lights outside the building. There is also an office, running lights, ceiling fan, and various small appliances. The 400+ Amp-Hour battery banksystem is charged by 2 Evergreen panels

This system paid for itself the day it came online. The Installed cost was less than thecost of running new utility service!
