Communication is necessary for the establishment, survival and growth of any entrepreneurship .
Communication is defined as the activity of conveying meaningful information. It requires a sender,
message and an intended recipient. The communicating parties share an area of communicative
commonality. The communication process is complete once the receiver has understood the message of
the sender. Studying the communication process is important because you coach, coordinate, evaluate, and supervise throughout this process.
During the transmitting of the message, two elements will be received: content and context. Content is the
actual words or symbols of the message that is known as language the spoken and written words
combined into phrases that make grammatical and semantic sense. We all use and interpret the
meanings of words differently, so even simple messages can be misunderstood. And many words have
different meanings to confuse the issue even more. Context is the way the message is delivered and is
known as paralanguage. It is the nonverbal elements in speech such as the tone of voice, the look in the
sender's eyes, body language, hand gestures, and state of emotions that can be detected.
Communication occurs daily in our society through conversations either face to face, on the phone,
Internet, letter and host of other means. The significance of communication is very crucial to thecontinued understanding, cooperation, and development in society and entrepreneurial ventures.
Effective communication in any entrepreneurship is important for decision making and successful
functioning. Entrepreneurs are generally self-reliant as well as proactive in nature. They are often
discontent with the status quo and forced to react to the rapid change and complexities with their
environment.
Entrepreneurship [edit ] Entrepreneurship involves undertaking innovation, finance and business endeavors in an effort to
transform innovations into economic goods. It is defined as the act of being an entrepreneur. It is verycrucial to mention that an entrepreneur cannot succeed without communicating with his or her human
elements in the organization. An entrepreneur needs a communication string that links people together in
his or her day-to-day business activities.
Part of being involved with "entrepreneurship" includes taking risks. Entrepreneurs search for change,
respond to it, and exploit it as an opportunity. It is commonly believed to be extremely chancy, but even
the slightest reward of success entrepreneurship can be self-rewarding. Entrepreneurship is becoming
increasingly popular in todays society. By having their own control entrepreneurship is deliberately in the
entrepreneurs hands. By taking risks and not being afraid of failure, there can be a significant increase in
lifestyle by having an efficient business, project or goals.
An entrepreneur should possess traits of a charismatic leader by being able to communicate his/her
vision effectively to create a team. According to Baum et al . [1] a charismatic leader will have positive
effects on both organizational and follower outcomes. Research has shown that charismatic or
transformational leadership can be positively associated with followers perceptions, performance, and
attitudes. An important aspect of charismatic leadership is being able to communicate the vision.

Kouzes and Posner [2] stated that the vision must be communicated to others, through written statements
as well as through personal communication, in order to convince them to support it. This can be applied
to both getting a team together and getting investors. Locke et al .[3] proposed that leaders must use their
personal communication skills, including speaking and listening skills, to articulate vision to others.
Entrepreneurship theorists point to the importance of communication of the entrepreneurs vision to new
venture teams.
Consistent with Hackman & Johnson [4] communicating a vision to followers may be well the most
important act of the transformational leader. Compelling visions provide people with a sense of purpose
and encourage commitment. Burt Nanus lists 4 characteristics of an effective vision- an effective vision
attracts commitment and energizes people, creates meaning for followers, establishes a standard of
excellence, and bridges the present and the future.
Entrepreneurs cannot fear failure. In order to succeed they must know what it is like to fail. In every
entrepreneurship it should be communicated that failure is possible, but it should be considered a road
block rather than a dead-end. Some of the most successful entrepreneurs failed several times before they
were successful.
Why is it important to communicate effectively as anentrepreneur [edit ] Communication is pivotal in the role of entrepreneurship and venture seeking. It is important to recognize
the formative role of language in conceptualizing venture opportunities as well as influencing stakeholders
about the feasibility of a venture, rather than discounting its influence of communication or reducing it to a
secondary process or outcome in relation to supposedly more basic cognitive processes . [5]
In entrepreneurship and venture seeking individuals must be able to appropriate a common ground
between entrepreneur and shareholder. It is imperative for the shareholders to understand the
prospective venture in its entirety. When an entrepreneur gets feedback from stakeholders who display
whether they understand and accept the intentions for the venture, it allows the entrepreneur to validate
that understanding or to correct it, and this, in turn, will decide the outcome of the relationship and that
venture.
Entrepreneurship and venture seeking requires continuous communication between partners. Throughout
the entrepreneur/stakeholder relationship both parties will endure turbulent times. These times must be
seen through an optimistic lens and regarded as success. This perspective relies heavily on the
communication competence of the entrepreneur . [6]
Applicable Communication Theories [edit ] The role of theory is important pertaining to entrepreneurship, without the awareness of communication it
would be impossible to be successful. A number of theories can be chosen when examining the role of an
entrepreneur and how that individual uses communication within their field of interest. To observe a few:
The Communication Accommodation Theory observes the reasoning and consequences of what happens
when two speakers alter their communication styles. Communication Accommodation theorists argue that

throughout communication, people will attempt to accommodate or adjust their method of speaking to
others. This is done in two ways, divergence and convergence. Convergence occurs when there is a
need for social approval .[7] When attempting to persuade or convey ideas to others it is essential that the
entrepreneur have the awareness to converge or diverge in an attempt to persuade or dissuade.
Face-Negotiation Theory examines how people in individualistic and collectivistic cultures negotiate andmaintain face in situations dealing with conflict. The theory is based on face management, which
observes how people from different cultures manage conflict negotiation in order to maintain face. Self-
face and other-face concerns explain the conflict negotiation between people from various cultures . [8]This
theory has much to do with crisis management that is important because entrepreneurs must be willing to
take the proper precautions to resolve any sort of conflict that may come up within their path. Awareness
within entrepreneurship is important as well, being conscious of other cultures in which face is more or
less important can help or hinder an individual greatly.
Hugh Rank was a theorist that developed a model in which he aimed to use two major strategies to
achieve goals. These strategies are nicely set into two main schemas known as intensify and
downplay .[9]This model is simplistic in nature but can be a useful tool by entrepreneurs when they aredeveloping their product or service. Entrepreneurs run into individuals that are critical of their ideas while
on their path to completion, having the ability to intensify the advantages and downplay the
disadvantages can help to satisfy these critics.
