1. Course Objective

Korean 10A is designed for college students who intend to build a solid foundation in

beginning level Korean. It is assumed that students have little or no knowledge of Korean.

This course not only covers the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, but

also aims to improve students’ abilities in pronunciation and vocabulary: particular

emphasis is placed on spoken language proficiency. Upon the successful completion of the

course, students will be able to communicate in everyday situations in simple Korean.

Topics include greetings, talking about campus life and family, numbers and telling time,

the course of daily life and weekend plans. Students will also be exposed to important

information on culture, contemporary issues, and traditions in Korea through video clips

and films.

2. Required Textbooks

(1) Integrated Korean: Beginning 1 Textbook, Second Edition (2010) by Cho, Lee,

Schulz, & Sohn. University of Hawai’i Press.

(2) Integrated Korean: Beginning 1 Workbook, Second Edition (2010) by Park, Suh,

Kim, & Cho. University of Hawai’i Press.

*Note: Do not purchase the 1st edition of any of the above textbooks. The 2nd edition has

gone through major changes and the class will be based on the 2nd edition only.

Audio files of the textbooks can be found and downloaded on the KLEAR Textbooks

website (http://kleartextbook.com) in MP3 format. You will need to access this website in

order to complete the workbook homework. Class materials (PowerPoint slides, handouts,

video clips, exam/project/writing assignment guidelines, etc.) will be uploaded on LATTE

(course title: 173KOR-10A-1: Beginning Korean).

(1) Attendance and Participation (10%)

Students are expected to participate actively in the class and complete daily

assignments in each class. The absence policy will be strictly enforced. You may miss

up to two classes per semester. If you miss more than two classes, your grade will

automatically drop by one half grade for each absence over two. No absences over

two will be excused for any reason. If you come to class 15 minutes late (or more), it

will be counted as an absence. If you are late three times, it will be also counted as

one absence. If you cannot attend a class due to unavoidable health reasons, notify the

instructor before you miss the class by talking to the instructor in person, or by e-

mailing the instructor ([email protected]) to explain why. It is strongly

recommended that you do not miss any class in order to continue your lessons and

finish the semester successfully.

(2) Vocabulary Quiz (10%)

There will almost always be a vocabulary quiz in the beginning of the class. There

will be no make-up quiz. Thus, if you miss the first five minutes, there is no chance

for you to make up the missed vocabulary quiz.

Movie Reaction Paper 4%

You are expected to submit your homework to the instructor by the due date.

Assignments turned in late are eligible for half credit - at most. Late assignments

should be turned in for this partial credit within two weeks from the due date. After

two weeks, no credit will be given. Late assignments need to be put in the instructor’s

mail box. Please don’t hand in late assignments to the instructor.

All the workbook exercises should be written and then detached from the book for

submission. All writing assignments need to be double-spaced whether you hand-

write or type, leaving some space for instructor’s written feedback.

Success in this 4 credit hour course is based on the expectation that students will

spend a minimum of 9 hours of study time per week in preparation for class (preview,

review, workbook assignments, preparation for exams/quizzes, etc.).

Students will watch short video clips in class together and complete worksheet

assignments on the clips using grammar patterns and expressions that they learned in

class. Students will also develop their Korean language skills and cultural

awareness/knowledge through watching a Korean film. Movie reaction paper needs to

be submitted to the instructor by the due date. More detailed guidelines will be

provided later in class.

(4) Exams and Group Project (60%)

▪ Two Mid-term Written Exams (24%, 12% each):

First mid-term exam: L1 ~ L3

Second mid-term exam: L4 ~ L6

▪ Oral Mid-term Exam (8%): The oral test will be held in the form of an interview

and graded based upon the five evaluation criteria: fluency, accuracy, pronunciation,

content and vocabulary.

▪ Final Exam (18%): The final exam will be held in the final exam week. The final

exam does not include an oral part. The format of the final exam will be identical to

that of the midterm except that it will be slightly longer than the midterm and

cumulative.

▪ Group Project (Korean Skit 10%): Students will brainstorm, write and perform a

skit as a group in Korean. A specific topic and guide for the skit will be given.

Content and grammar of each skit will be consulted with the instructor during the skit

workshop classes. The Korean skit must be typed and submitted on the performance

day.

4. Academic Integrity and Disabilities

You are expected to be familiar with, and to follow, the University’s policies on academic

integrity. Please consult Brandeis University Rights and Responsibilities (Section 4) for

all policies and procedures (http://www.brandeis.edu/studentaffairs/srcs/rr/RR13_14.pdf).

Korean 10A Fall 2017 Syllabus

4

All policies related to academic integrity apply to in-class and take home projects,

assignments, exams, and quizzes. Misconducts, such as, cheating on examinations,

representing the work of another as one’s own (= plagiarism), knowingly allowing another

student to represent your work as his or her own, etc., will be strictly prohibited in this

class. Students may only collaborate on assignments with permission from the instructor.

Allegations of alleged academic dishonesty will be forwarded to the Director of Academic

Integrity. Sanctions for academic dishonesty can include failing grades and/or suspension

from the university.

Students with documented disabilities are provided accommodations (e.g., extended time)

by the instructors (http://www.brandeis.edu/acserv/disabilities/accommodations.html). If

you are a student with a documented disability on record at Brandeis University and wish

to have a reasonable accommodation made for you in this class, please see me

immediately.
