IT is official – the Kouga regionis home to the best police sta-tion and the best police cluster
in the province.
For the fourth year running theHankey Police Station was namedthe Best Station in the Province inthe Medium Station-category, whilethe Humansdorp Cluster won theBest Cluster Category in the Prov-ince.
These awards were bestowed onthe various police station during theProvincial Annual Service Excel-lence Awards ceremony held in EastLondon.
These awards acknowledge thework of officers who went above andbeyond the call of duty to serve theircommunity and prevent crime in thepreceding year.
According to Humansdorp ClusterCommander, Brigadier Neil Jantjies, these achievements are earnedthrough dedication, teamwork, disci-pline and proper planning.
“Problem crime areas were identi-fied and pro-active steps were imme-
diately implemented to curb furtherescalation of crimes,” said Jantjies.
Steps taken include reaction unitsthat were implemented in St FrancisBay and Jeffreys Bay during the peakholiday season, ensuring visitorsand locals a crime-free festive mood.Furthermore, hot spot areas - whichincluded taverns - were identifiedand patrolled regularly.
Contributing to the success of theHankey Police Station is their adop-tion of a zero tolerance approach, which paid off as serious crimes de-creases significantly when police tar-geted the petty crimes.
“Most of our stations have a goodrelationship with the Crime Preven-tion Forums and the communities. This is important, because when wework together we can definitelymake a difference in the communi-ties we serve,” said Jantjies.
A proud lt. col. Ezrah Sefaley, whohas been at the head of the HankeyPolice Station since 2009, attributeshis success through leading from thefront and getting involved and un-derstanding the needs of his commu-nity.

“EK kry skoon hoendervleis asek dink dat more my laastedag is.
geneem.
Dít is waarvoor ek gebore is.”
ek my goed wil vat en loop.

THE inaugural EbubeleniArts Festival scheduled forDecember29 inNelsonMan-
dela Bay Metro, boasts a strongand exciting line-up of nationaland local artists, with the aim ofmaking this an annual event.
Ebubeleni means “friendly” and isa reference to PE being known as theFriendly City. It will be held at theHeatherbank Sports Club in Walmer.
Among the national acts are theParlotones, Stimela, Zonke, Theo
Kgosinkwe, Toya Delazy, AKA andMiCasa; while five local acts andbands will also perform.
“We have been carefully planningthis event for the past five years andfeel the time is right to stage it now. This is because we have the neces-sary capabilities and capacity topresent a very successful event,”said the show’s producer Tembi Ma-hambehlala.
“We felt PE deserves a signatureevent like this. For a long time PEhas been a spectator while other ma-
jor metros in the country host annu-al events of this nature boostingtourism in those regions. We wantthis event to contribute to job crea-tion in the region, as we all knowhow dire the economy is in the coun-try, especially in this region,” saidMahambehlala.
According to Mahambehlala, theline-up was deliberately designed tohave a crossover look and appeal soas to promote social cohesion whileattracting a broader audience.
Mahambehlala’s experience in-
cludes working at big Festivals, suchas the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz,Macufe, Diamonds and Dorings andthe Tribute Concert at Moretele inTshwane.
Another coup for the show organi-sers is Zonke, who despite being oneof the top-selling artists in recenttimes, has not performed in her home-town of PE since she came to fame.
It has also been decades sinceStimela has set foot in the Bay andmembers of the group have ex-pressed excitement returning to per-
form in PE after a long absence fromthese shores.
Ebubeleni Arts Festival is a home-coming event with a picnic feel andstrives to provide entertainment forthe people of Port Elizabeth and sur-rounding areas..
Gates for the festival open at 1pmand the show starts at 2pm. Ticketsare R120 for ordinary tickets andR150 for Golden Circle tickets andare available at Computicket andShoprite Checkers. No ticketswill besold at the gates.

So is daar byvoorbeeld die verskillende
my ma se woordevan 1948 toe sy inekstase diepragtige wit meelgeprys het.

We would like to express our dissatisfactionwith the recent article on thermography ofthe breasts which was published in theKouga Express on October 30, 2012 assupplied by Thermal Health Solutions inJeffreys Bay.
Reference was made to mammography, but numerous inaccurate statementsregarding mammography and itsscientifically proven role in the screeningfor breast cancer were made.
On June 2, 2011 the Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) of the United Statesissued a communication to alert the public, including women and health care providers, that thermography is not a replacement forscreening mammography and should not beused alone to diagnose breast cancer. TheFDA is not aware of any valid scientific datato show that thermographic devices, whenused on their own, are an effective screeningtool for any medical condition including theearly detection of breast cancer or otherbreast disease.
Breast cancer in South Africa is the mostcommon cancer in white women and thesecond most common cancer in blackwomen. The National Cancer Institute (NCI)in the United States estimates that about 1 in8 women will be diagnosed with breastcancer sometime in her life.
Mammography is still the most effectivescreening method for detecting breastcancer in its early, most treatable stages. Results from clinical trials and other studiesshow that screening mammography canhelp reduce the number of deaths frombreast cancer among women ages 40 to 70and is promoted actively for this reason inthe United States and the European Union.
Advertorial
Drs. Visser, Erasmus, Vawda and Partners Radiology PracticeThermography vs Mammography
The most important factor in survival is theearly detection of breast cancer.Screening mammograms do not only detectcancers which present as mass lesions in theb r e a s t s , b u t c a n a l s o f i n dmicrocalcifications (tiny deposits ofcalcium) that sometimes indicate thepresence of breast cancer. A mammogramcan be combined with an ultrasound tofurther improve the detection of early breastcancer. In high risk patients an MRI scan ofthe breasts can also be considered forscreening purposes.What are The National Cancer Institute'sr e c o m m e n d a t i o n s f o r s c r e e n i n gmammograms?
Women age 40 and older should have amammogram every 1 to 2 years.
Women who are at higher than averagerisk of breast cancer (for example, becauseof a family history of the disease) should talkto their health care providers about whetherto have mammograms before age 40 and howoften to have them. Other screeningmethods (e.g. breast MRI) can also beconsidered. As for concerns about exposure to radiationfrom a mammogram, evidence shows thatthe benefit far outweighs the risk of harm, especially when compared to the danger ofbreast cancer.
Thermography is not a substitute formammography and thermography shouldnot be used alone to screen for or to diagnosebreast cancer. Thermography may be usedto supplement in format ion frommammography, but it must be kept in mindthat it can't always detect small cancers, norcancers situated deep in the breast.

ook teen springgetye gewaarsku.“Springgety beteken hoër as normaal
Swem versigtig, vra nooddienste
TWO of the most common ways unwantedvisitors gain access to a property are whenchildren are at home alone - especially overthe forthcoming end of year holidays whentheir parents are at work and of courseweekends. With many dual-income house-holds, children commonly spendmore timeon a property on their own without theirparents and yet often they are forgottenwhen home security planning is con-cerned.Chubb Fire and Security suggests the fol-
lowing:1. Remember your children when planningfor your home’s security, especially whenthey are at home alone or during weekendor holiday periods.2. Many home burglaries or hold-ups occurbecause children haven’t been told what todo when this happens.3. Childrenmust never allow unannouncedvisitors onto the property.4. Children should be taught how to answera telephone or gate intercom without be-traying the fact that they are alone.5. Rather than acknowledging that theirparents are away from the property, theyshould say that the required person is notavailable and ask the caller to leave a mes-sage.
6. Onno account should a visitor be allowedonto the property unannounced or withouttheir parent’s permission.7. Your children should never be cajoled in-to going to theproperty’s gate to investigatean unannounced visitor.8. Your children should know the locationof your panic buttons, andmore important-ly, how to use them. If you have decided toinvest in remote panic buttons, make sureyour children have one at their disposal.9. An easily accessible list of emergencycontact numbers such as you and yourspouse’s work and cell phone numbers aswell as those of the immediate neighbours, your security company, the South AfricanPolice Service and other emergency servic-es, such as the Fire Department, should beleft near the home’s main phone.10. Most children have cell phones – inputthese numbers into their phones and if theyhave the facility, show your children howto use the speed dial facility on their phone.11. It is advisable and indeed necessary tofrequently test any fixed or mobile panicbuttons, but please advise yourMonitoringCentre first. False alarms cost lives and todo this as ameans of testing response timescould cost a person his life.Source: Chubb Security
Children an important part ofhome security
CHUBB has the following advice to protectyou and your family from crime:)Be aware that you could be a victim atany time.)Try not to go out alone late at night. Ifthis is not possible, stay in well-lit, busyareas.)Make sure your perimeter gate is secure-ly closed before leaving home.
)When returning home, be vigilant and beaware of your surroundings.)If you feel you are being followed, driveto the nearest police station)Do not park in dark, unattended areas.)Stay alert and pay attention to your sur-roundings.

Safety tips to prevent crime
NEARLY all of us (76%) admit to eatingmore than usual during the festive periodand will on average gain 2kg in weight ac-cording to a just-released national year-endsurvey byPharmaDynamics, a leading pro-vider of heartburn medication in SA.
With the seasonal festivities soonbeinguponus, many will be getting merry on too muchwine at the office party, stuffing ourselves withtreats and eating our way to the New Year onleftovers, but can our bodies take it?Mariska Fouche, spokesperson for Pharma
Dynamics says it’s normal to see a spike inheartburnmedication sales over the festive pe-riod, and emergency rooms equally report anincrease in patient visits seeking relief fromsome form of abdominal discomfort.“After Christmasmany suffer fromdigestive
problems caused by toomuch food and alcohol, with the most common problem tending to beindigestion or reflux brought on by eating toomuch sugary and fatty foods,” says Fouche. The Pharma Dynamics poll confirmed that
after eatingChristmas dinner a staggering 55%of South Africans suffer from indigestion, 49%experience heartburn and 42% of us are bur-dened with flatulence. Nearly a third also ad-mitted to rushing their food in anticipation ofthe next course.“Indigestion can indeed be caused by eating
too quickly. As it takes time for the feeling ofsatiety to come through most people just keepon eating with no breaks. Not chewing yourfood thoroughly and the stress of multitasking– often associated with the party season – are
sure tickets to increased stomach acid andheartburn flare-ups.“Overindulgence can lead to very severe in-
flammation of the stomach lining or in thethroat fromall the acid that comesup and couldeven lead to a long-termproblemsuchasulcers,gallstones, irritable bowel syndrome or a hia-tus hernia.“For people who are already prone to heart-
burn, piling on theweight, particularly aroundthe stomach, can also intensify it, so try to eatand drink in moderation.Fouchehas some tips to help peoplemake the
most of their holidayswhile keeping heartburnin check:.Steer clear of foods or drinks thatmake symp-toms worse.Reduce meal portions.Eat slowly and take a break between courses.Alternate alcohol drinks with water.Don’t go to bed or exercise on a full stomach.Opt for salads, leanmeats, fish and light sauc-es whenever possible.“Try to reduce other factors that may aggra-
vate heartburn such as stress, which is verymuch part and parcel of the holidays and takean over-the-counter antacid or ask your doctoror pharmacist for medication that will reducethe amount of stomach acid that is produced toavoid potential festive health woes,” saysFouche.More than 2 373 South Africans between the
ages of 18 and 60 took part in Pharma Dynam-ics’ national online survey.

THERobben Island crossing isregarded as one of the tough-est open water swims in the
world. Cold water, apex predators, swimming through a busy ship-ping lane, big swells and windwhipped seas are some of the chal-lenges awaiting the ocean swim-mers who want to tackle one theworld’s iconic open water swims.
Local swimmer Brenton Williamstook on the challenge last Mondaymorning in 12 degree water and abumpy sea to became the first personin the world to swim from 3 AnchorBay to Robben Island….butterfly.Williams was allowed only to swim
in a speedo and wear a swim cap andgoggles.Nobody has ever contemplated
swimming butterflyfly over the 11.5Kchannel before and the vast majorityof Robben Island crossing are done be-tween the Island and Blouberg beach,a 7.6km stretch of water.Another South African swimmer,
Chris Barnard completed the Blou-berg crossing swimming butterfly inFebruary 1990 and it’s taken 22 years
for another swimmer to step up andtake on the butterfly challenge.Peter Bales, the chairman of the
Cape Long Distance Swim Associa-tionwas at the start ofWilliams’ swimat 3AnchorBayand said that heneverthought he would see another butter-fly swimmer taking onRobben Island.“Chris Barnard was a phenomenal
swimmer and I really never thoughtI would see somebody else try to flythe Robben Island crossing. Brenton’sswim was an epic,” said Bales.Conditions were not ideal for a but-
terfly crossing with the water at 12 de-grees anda lumpysurfacewhichaddedto the challenge that faced Williams.“Iwas inCapeTown for the 5KShip-
wreck swim which was held in 11 de-gree water along the Blouberg coast-line on Sunday and Derrick Frazermade the call that therewas awindowfor a Robben Island crossing earlyMonday morning,” said Williams.“Althoughconditionswerenot ideal,
I felt that we had to make use of the op-portunity and have a shot at the 11.5Kcrossing. “After I had settled down, I re-alised it was going to be a hard swimasmy shoulderswere still stiff from the
Shipwreck swim the previous daywhere we swam through patches of wa-ter that were around 10 degrees.“The last 3 K was really tough and
I had to dig deep to keep the rhythmgoing and the Island just didn’t seemto be getting any closer. When itlooked like we were really close toshore we discovered there was a hugekelp bed we had to swim though toreach the Island. It was hard swim-ming fly through the kelp and it tookabout 20 minutes to swim the last cou-ple of hundred metres. At the sametime getting close to the finish was areally special moment in my life asRobben Island has played a significantrole in South Africa’s history and tocomplete an unprecedented swim wasa great feeling. Things seemed to go inslow motion and the sea calmed downclose to the shore” said Williams aftersetting a new world record.”After taking some time to recharge
his shoulders and organise the Swim-ming Plus Marina Mile which is onDecember 22, Brenton will take a lookat breaking the South African recordof 15km for the longest openwater but-terfly swim.
