‘N VERMEENDE dief met ’n voorliefde virkoffie en pienk melkskommel, wat so ver-sigtig was om nie eens sy vingerafdrukkeagter te laat nie, se doen en late is op videoverewig.

Ten spyte van sy deeglike beplanning, dieontkoppeling van die belangrikste kameras enweermag-sluiptegnieke, was die man wat op 16Januarie die Tampa Bay Spur in Jeffreysbaaibesteel het, skynbaar onbewus dat beeldmateri-aal van die vorige dag en die skerp oë van diebestuur tot sy ondergang sal lei.

Die verdagte was so seker van homself, dathy ’n hele nag in die Spur deurgebring het enweggelê het aan kos en bier voor hy met R300se munte uit die kasregister die hasepad gekieshet deur die klein venster bo by die hoofingang.

Volgens Jean van Niekerk, ’n bestuurder vanTampa Bay Spur, het die verdagte op 15 Janu-arie omstreeks 12:00 by die Spur ingekom enkoffie bestel. “Volgens die beeldmateriaal vanons sekuriteitsvideo het hy tot ongeveer 13:30aan daardie een koppie koffie gedrink. Ons ver-moed dat hy die kameras dopgehou het,” sê VanNiekerk.

“Die man het weer om 21:00 daardie aand ter-uggekom en ’n aarbeimelkskommel bestel. Na30 minute kan daar duidelik gesien word hoehy na vermoedelik die dames se badkamergaan. Ons dink dat hy in die dak of in een vandie afskortings weggekruip het.”

Volgens Van Niekerk het hy omstreeks 23:30die Spur gesluit.

“Die eerste alarmhet ommiddernagafgegaanen daarna weer om 02:00 die oggend. Beide kerehet Smhart Sekuriteit uitgekom,maar kon geengebreekte venster of geforseerde toegang tot diegebou sien nie,” sê Van Niekerk. “Ek is 07:00daardie oggend in kennis gestel dat die kamerasse drade ontkoppel is.”

Van Niekerk gaan voort: “Daar kan op diebeeldmateriaal gesien word hoe die verdagtevandie badkamer ongeveer 15meter op symaagseil, op ’n stoel en tafel klim en in die dak ver-dwyn. Daar het hy 90 minute spandeer om vyfvan ons belangrikste kameras te ontkoppel,”vertel Van Niekerk.

“Om 05:00 kan daar gesien word hoe hy by dierooster afklim en dadelik weer op sy maag nadie ingang van die kombuis seil, waar hy vir 10minute op een plek stil gelê het. Daarvandaanis hy na die opwaskamer en die kantoor wat ge-lukkig gesluit was. Vanaf die kantoor het hy opsy maag na die kasregister geseil waar hy R300se munte gebuit het en is hy uit by die klein ven-ster by die voordeur.”

VolgensVanNiekerkhet een vandie bestuur-ders die verdagte - wat nie rekening gehou hetmet die agterste kameras wat nog aan was nie- aan sy klere waarmee hy die vorige dag daarwas, herken.

Ontsnapper doodge-skiet

’n Man se poging om in Humansdorp uitpolisie-aanhouding te ontsnap, het homverlede Woensdag sy lewe gekos.

Dit het gekom nadat twee mans Woens-dag op ’n klag van aanrandingmet die doelom ernstig te beseer in die Humansdorp-landdroshof moes verskyn.

Die oorledene (32) en sy medebeskuldig-de het verlede Woensdagoggend probeerweghardloop terwyl hofbeampteshulle vandie aanhoudingselle na die hof begelei het.

“Die mans het hulle van die polisie-beamptes losgeruk en in die gang tussendie hof en selle gevlug. Een van hulle hetongeveer ’n halwe blok in die straat af ge-hardloop toe hy oor ’n huis se heiningprobeer klim het,” sê ’n omstander, watnie sy naam wou noem nie.

“Toe klap die skote en die man val in dieerf anderkant die heining. Die beampteshet hom weer daar vasgetrek en ’n ambu-lans is na die toneel ontbied.”

Die man is een keer in die onderlyf ge-tref. Paramedici het hom op die toneel be-handel voor hy per ambulans na die plaas-like hospitaal geneem sou word. Die skoothet vermoedelik ’n slagaar getref en hy isin die ambulans dood.

Intussen is die tweede man op die hof-perseel gevind waar hy agter ’n muurgeskuil het. Hy is dadelik weer in aan-houding geplaas.

Maj. Ernest Sigobe, provinsiale polisie-woordvoerder, het die voorval bevestig engesê dit het omstreeks 09:40 gebeur.

“Die man het probeer vlug en polisie-beamptes het hom agternagesit. ’n Skootis afgevuur, wat die man in die onderlyfgetref het.”

Sigobe het gesê die man se naam salweerhou word totdat sy naasbestaandesvan die voorval in kennis gestel is.

’n Geregtelike doodsondersoek sal ge-hou word.

Seun (11) ondervra námoord

Landboukolleges krymiljoene

DIE land se 12 landboukolleges het ’n kont-antinspuiting van R387 miljoen gekry omhulle in “sentrums vanuitnemendheid” teomskep.

Tina Joemat-Pettersson, minister vanlandbou, bosbou en visserye, het gister in’n verklaring aangekondig die nasionaletesourie het dié geld vir die volgende drie-jaartermyn goedgekeur.

Die geld sal onder meer gebruik wordom infrastruktuur op te knap, kurriku-lums te hersien, kommunikasietegnologieaan te koop, akademiese personeel weerop te lei, bestuur- en finansiële stelsels teversterk en te verseker dat akademieseprogramme geakkrediteer is.

DieDagsorg benodig nog bababed-jies, ’n noodhulpkassie, skudunet,plastiektafels vir die kinders, op-

blaas matrasse, ’n brandblusser,wasbare verf vir binne en buite, tw-ee veiligheidshekke vir die deure en’n heining vir rondom die gebou.

Volgens Terblanche is daar ’n groot behoeftein die gemeenskap vir ’n plaaslike radiodiens.

“Die radiostasie is gemik op opvoeding, ont-wikeling en om mense toegang tot die mediaen inligting te gee. As ’n stasie wil ons die sakeen die belange van die gemeenskap bespreeken positiewe eienskappe van die gebied be-mark.

“Verder sal die radiostasie ook verseker datplaaslike nuus, inligting oor ongelukke enkon-struksies op paaie, vakansieprogramme enverskillende aktiwiteite die gemeenskapvinngerbereik.Onswil dieheleKouga- enKou-kamma-gebied dien. Daar is baie inligting watnie al die mense in dié gebied bereik nie.”

Programme en musiek - wat 40% van die to-tale programsal uitmaak - gaan inEngels,Afri-kaans en Xhosa uitgesaai word.

Musiek sal wissel van gospel tot Afrikaans,klassieke musiek tot Hip Hop en rap tot meerkontemporêre musiek.

“Ons wil ook ’n platform vir plaaslike kun-stenaars daarstel, sodat hulle ’n kans het omop die lug gehoor te word,” sê Terblanche.

When did your love for food determine yourdestiny?

My mum was a great cook. We grewupona farmin theStilbaai regionandI had to attend boarding school. Dur-ing weekends I helped her to bakerusks. This is where it all started.

How did you became a Gordon Ramsaychef?

After school I joined the masses andwent to theUKandendedupworkingas awaiter inFranks, a restaurant inManchester. This was a steppingstone for me to later enrol at a cater-ing college, after which I went toFrance. Thereafter, for four years, Iwas employed at a place inAbersoch,North Wales where I worked for agreat English cook named Nigel

Skinner who actually was my men-tor.I have always been a great fan of

Gordon Ramsay and before headingback to SouthAfrica I ended upwork-ing for him at his restaurant in Chel-sea, which was regarded as the bestrestaurant in London.

Is being a Gordon Ramsay chef as toughas they say?

Wewere between 16-20 chefs workingat his kitchen from 05:00 non-stop,consistently running and on your feetwithout a break for at least 12 hours.Then you’ll have an hour’s break andcontinue working until late. It wasvery hard work and I worked at Gor-don Ramsay’s for ten months. At thatstageafter tenmonths Iwas sort of thefourth longest serving chef in thekitchen.His standard was just mind blow-

ing.Now I’m back and want to do what

I love most right here in the EasternCape.

What made you come to the Eastern Cape?

For the last few years all chefs havewanted to be in the Western Cape;25% of the best chefs in Africa arethere in Franschhoek, Stellenboschor Cape Town. I wanted to be the fishwhich went against the stream and Ijust love the Eastern Cape and it hasgrown on me tremendously. I can seeme nestling down here and I believein the positive energy of Crosswaysand what is going to happen here.Great thanks to my partner and loveof my life Mika and her parents with-out whom this would not have beenpossible today.

What are the qualities of a good chef?

Good working ethic. Taste, taste,taste! You constantly have to be fullypart of what you do, cook from yourheart!

Food for soul at country kitchen

Method

Rosti: Roughly grate potatoes, season generously with salt and pepper. Squeeze out excess waterinto seperate bowl. Add fresh thyme to taste and 2 cloves of roughly chopped garlic. Heat oliveoil in a non-stick pan. Place potato mixture into pan and press flat to fill pan. Cook until golden

brown. Place in oven (preheated to 180 degrees Celsius) for about 25 minutes until crispy.

Sauce: Place tomatoes in a sunny windowsill for a few hours to bring out the taste and colour.Chop into slices and drizzle with olive oil. Add herbs, roughly chopped.

Kingklip: Heat olive oil in a non-stick pan. Add fish to hot pan. Roast on either sides for 5-7minutes until golden brown. Set aside to relax for few minutes.

Place rosti with the Kingklip on top and drizzle with your fresh tomato sauce. Garnish to yourliking. Trevor used thyme, fennel and radish flowers and baby basil leaves.
