Big Data เป็นการจัดเก็บข้อมูลรูปแบบหนึ่งที่ต่างจากที่ใช้กันอยู่ก่อนหน้านี้ เป็นการจัดเก็บข้อมูลขนาดใหญ่ที่มีความซับซ้อนมาก อีกทั้งรูปแบบของข้อมูลที่เก็บอาจจะไม่มีแบบแผนที่ชัดเจน รวมถึงมีปริมาณเพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ทั้งนี้ Big Data อาจจะมาในรูปแบบของระบบฐานข้อมูลแบบ Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) หรือในรูปแบบการเก็บข้อมูลแบบ NoSQL ก็ได้

ตวัอยา่งของขอ้มลู Big Data เชน่ ขอ้มลูในเครอืขา่ยสงัคมออนไลน ์(Social Network) ข้อมูลค้นหาทางด้านอินเทอร์เน็ต ข้อมูลการโทรศัพท์ ข้อมูลดาราศาสตร์ ข้อมูลอุตุนิยมวิทยา ข้อมูลชีววิทยา การทหาร คลังภาพถ่าย เป็นต้น

หากนำา Big Data มาประยุกต์ใช้งานในองค์กรเพื่อเก็บข้อมูลต่างๆ เช่น ข้อมูลการสั่งซื้อสินค้า ข้อมูลของอุปกรณ์ที่เสียหายในองค์กร ข้อมูลสินค้าที่มียอดขายสูงสุด ข้อมูลสินค้าที่มียอดแจ้งปัญหามากที่สุด เป็นต้น ก็สามารถนำาข้อมูลเหล่านี้มาวิเคราะห์เพื่อประเมินผู้ผลิต (Supplier) ผู้จัดจำาหน่าย (Vendor) ได้ โดยทั่วไปแล้วข้อมูลที่จัดเก็บแบบ Big Data นั้น มกัจะเปน็ขอ้มลูที่ไมไ่ดม้กีารคาดการณเ์อาไวก้อ่นลว่งหนา้ แตม่กีารจดัเกบ็เอาไว้เผื่อการใช้งานในอนาคต (แบบเดียวกับที่เราต้องการตรวจสอบร้านอาหารว่าอร่อยหรือไม่) ดังนั้น Big Data จึงเป็นเทรนด์ใหม่ขององค์กรที่จะเริ่มพัฒนาต่อจากนี้ โดยในตอนนี้เริ่มมีโปรแกรมต่างๆ ออกมารองรับเทคโนโลยี Big Data มากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น Apache Hadoop, Microsoft SQL Server และ Oracle เป็นต้น

Big data is the term for collection of data set that is different from the one that we previously used. It is so large and complex and might not be in the same format. The amount of data kept might getting bigger and bigger. Big Data may be in the form of Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) or in NoSQL.

Examples of Big Data include data in social network, online searching results, phone records, meteorological data, biological data, military data and images stocks.

Big Data benefits us. If we want to try a new restaurant, for example, we can use Google or Facebook (which is considered to be Big Data) to look for reviews and see how others say about this restaurant. You don’t need to risk or guess whether the food is good.

Big Data can be used in an organization so that we store information such as orders, damaged devices and top selling items. Then, we can analyze and evaluate suppliers and vendors. Usually, the data stored in Big Data format is not what the organization plans to do but it must be stored for future uses (like- when we want to see whether a restaurant is good enough). Now we have several programs that work with or support Big Data, including Apache Hadoop, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle, and there will be more supported programs in the future.
