CMV Show EnhancementsAdjustments aim to make the show fresh again

Beginning with episode 430 of “Christian Music Videos” titled “Video Submissions” airing the week of October 10th, you’ll notice several changes in the show’s design. I made a new show open, coming up next segment, CD giveaway promo and a number of other small tweeks here and there - as well as a couple of big ones.

CMV SAYS “BYE” TO JOY One of the biggest changes is that the lovable 3D cartoon character - and show mascot, Joy, will no longer appear in the show. It isn’t that I no longer like her, its just that I

felt it was time for a change. Her voice, performed by Haleigh Yerrick, will still be in the show, but not as part of the character. The character of Joy has been around since the reboot of the series back in 2005 appearing in more than 300 episodes. Although she will be missed, change opens the door to newer ideas. With these and several other show adjustments, it is my goal to make each episode a little more reverent, focusing more on the worship of Christ. So at least for now, the show design is a little more series featuring actual humans in the promos instead of an

occasional use of Joy. I hope you like what you see.

STUDIO EPISODES ADDEDAnother addition, which you’ll see right away with episode 430 is that some of the episodes now take place in our studio with new set design elements. I’m really excited about this. At times it is challenging to find different locations to shoot an episode of CMV. With the studio option, I’ll always have a default location when nothing really exciting is going on in Surgeon’s or Katie’s life to shoot an episode around. I like how it turned out, and I hope you will also.

VIDEO SUBMISSIONS One new promo that I’ve created as an optional insert in the show is an invite for

independent artists to submit their music videos to us for possible air on the show. We’ve always been open to accept professional looking videos from anyone singing for the glory of the Lord. But with this promo, I’ve made it official, offering opportunities for

anyone - even if they haven’t been picked up by a label to submit their videos for possible air on CMV. Over the past few months, I’ve received an influx of indie artists submitting their videos. Hopefully, this promo will encourage others to submit as well. So, there you have it, a fresh look to an old show. I’d love to know what you think. If you want to drop me and email at [email protected] or post a comment on the wall of the CMV facebook page that’d be great!

STRIP “THOUGHTS CAPTIVE”Joyce Meyers, a famous

Christian preacher, wrote a book called, “The Battlefield of the Mind”. The bible teaches us that we need to be mindful of what we think about. God wants us to think on good and holy things, to take our thoughts captive. When I began thinking about that truth, I thought it might be an interesting idea to show how an evil thought can be birthed. In the strip, Abby finds Brandon attractive. That, in and of itself, is fairly innocent. But she could allow that thought to get out of control, to go to dark places, and maybe even to lead her to do things that are unbecoming a follower of Christ. The bible encourages us to take our thoughts captive. I believe that it is at this stage that Abby needs to decide how she is going to handle that thought. Will she let it fester like King David did, or is she going to engage her mind in dismissing it so that she can remain free

to focus on the right things as well as stay committed to her boyfriend? This second strip in the 10-part series shows how a seed can be planted, even in

the mind of a strong Christian. I believe that we can all take a lesson from this, because the bible reminds us that we all share “like afflictions”, meaning that if something tempts Abby or me, it is quite possible that it could tempt you as well. We all have to remember to take our thoughts captive.

PUZZLE - “CHAOS”Doctors would agree that

stress can lead to mental and health complications - or at least they are a factor. I believe

that God wants us to be as stress free as possible. It is as simple (or as difficult) as giving our cares to Christ, and knowing that He is in control, not ourselves. As Judy does in this online puzzle, we can pray for peace. God is a peace-giver and I believe that if we pray and believe, that God will

provide what we need. Jesus reminds us that if our children ask for a fish we wouldn’t give them a snake, or if they ask for bread, we wouldn’t give them a stone. That if we know how to give our children good gifts even though we are evil, how much more will our Father in heaven give us good gifts. So, if we take that scripture to heart, I believe we can live a life that is stress free, trusting that He will take care of us. It has worked for me so far...

STRIP - “SUSPICION”In an effort to get the comic

strips and puzzles caught up with the number of cartoons posted, I decided to release another comic strip today. I originally thought about posting it later in the month, but decided it might look nicer in the newsletter. So I decided to release two at once. And since it is the third strip in a series of ten, it would make sense to read one right after the other.

In the last strip, we can see a seed of temptation planted. In this strip we see a seed of doubt planted. If we let these seeds grow, they can turn into trees of temptation or trees of

doubt. That is why I believe that we should nip these things in the bud - no pun intended - right when they are planted. I believe that it is true for anyone that when we let these things grow, they can really get out of control...

CARTOON - “AGREEMENT”I do seem to love a good

story arc. So not only are we in an arc with the comic strips but we are as well with the cartoon series. This cartoon is the second in a 3-part arc about healing. I hope you like it.

The episode is written by Ivin Viljoen, and include voice performances by Vernal

Shephard (Doctor Edmonds), Keegan Cox (Will), Jessica Cox (Judy) and Kaitlyn Haan (Jessica) with additional mouth articulation by Stephen Philips, animated by David M. Evans.

Be sure to partake in everything posted this month

for “The Wartleys” and follow the title characters as they try to live a Christian life in todays world.

• Read both comic strips today, Monday, Oct. 1st, in this newsletter or online.

• Watch the cartoon, Wednesday, Oct. 12th

• Play the online puzzle, Wednesday, Oct. 26th

Maine Media WorkshopsTwo weeks in Maine learning animation and audio

This was the third time that I went out to Maine for "professional development" training. The first time I was there to learn more about video editing using the AVID Media Composer (an editing software used by professionals to cut movies and TV shows). The second time I went, I took two back to back classes. One of the classes was "Directing Actors". Here I learned from a seasoned professional who directed many Hollywood movies and television shows such as Miami Vice. I'm sad to say that I actually can't remember the other class right off hand, but I'm pretty sure it was along the lines of movie production. This time around, I attended two back to back courses again - "Introduction to 3D Animation" and "Production Sound Mixing".

INTRODUCTION TO 3D ANIMATION

The primary reason I wanted to take the 3D animation course

was to learn how to "model" objects for 3D Animation. "Modeling" is the process of creating an object digitally for a digital world from scratch. In the real world, if you wanted a new couch, you'd go to a furniture store and buy one. In the digital world, they are for sale on line as well for purchase, but just like a carpenter can build a couch in the real world, a "model" of a couch can be created in the digital world. If you've seen "Rezin", the 27-minute 3D Animation that later transitioned into a dramatic audio series, then you've seen how KTF has used 3D animation to tell Christian stories. One major limitation I had was that all of the props and buildings - like anything from a tube of toothpaste to Rezin's apartment - were either purchased or obtained through the internet. With this class, I can now create my own props. Over the course of one week, I learned how to create several. I ended up finishing two dressers, a bed,

“Coke Cup”

bed stand, mirror, picture frames, desk, door, Coke cup, lamp, and an iPhone, along with the walls, rug, floor and ceiling of a bedroom. One of the most complex items I created was what I call the "Tinman" - a sculpture of a robotic head. Another is the last prop I created, which was a detailed chair that I modeled after an image I found online. Now I feel like I can model several of my own objects for future 3D animation projects. This class is quite timely because the next big project that I hope to create is another 3D animated series. This time I'll take what I've learned from the first animated project to make an even better one with a more sure path to completion. This time, I plan to create the characters, locations and props even before I write the script.

One of the big problems with my first effort at an animated series was that it had too many locations that were only used once. This time, I'll create totally detailed environments so that when I begin the animation stage, I won't have to worry about that and I plan to use them often enough to justify all of the detailed work. So I'm excited to use what I've learned specifically for that series.

PRODUCTION SOUND MIXING

My second week in Maine, for the Maine Media Workshops, I learned how to mix audio on the set of a movie production. If you've seen the Christian Sci-Fi series "Chronicles" or any of the movies created by KTF, you'll know that some of our earliest work was in the form of movies, later creating movie shorts, telling stories in movie-style format with actors and a modest camera crew. The last project we did in this format was in 2007 with the final two half hour episodes in the 4-part "Chronicles" series. I've always wanted to learn how the professionals captured sound on a big-budget movie and this second week, I learned just that. Professional production sound mixer, Mark Ulano, taught the class for a total of 8 students. If you don't know Mark, you almost certainly know his work. He mixed audio for the two Iron Man movies, "Super 8", "Titanic", and several Quinten Tarentino movies just to name a few. You can look him up on the Internet Movie DataBase

REZIN DRAMATIC AUDIO SERIES

for the entire list of the movies and television shows he worked on. So it was a privilege to learn from one of the best in the industry. I learned how audio is captured in several production situations, and have come to appreciate the art. I've always wondered how mixers are able to get such great sound in almost any production situation. Have you ever wondered how good sound can be captured from a couple performing a dialogue scene on a pier in a very wide shot? I have. And now I have the answers. Mark not only demystified audio capture, but he helped me expand my knowledge of what I thought I knew. With this new information, I'm excited to begin working on my next dramatic movie-style project. Before taking this class, I didn't have any thought of directing another movie-style production any time soon. However, after the class, I just can't wait to put what I've

learned to practice. So I'm in the very beginning stage of considering what that project will be. Stay up to date on the monthly newsletters to find out what we plan and when we plan to produce it. At the end of it all, I would say that this has been my absolute favorite learning experience that I can remember in recent years. I consider it a privilege that I had the opportunity to learn from the best so that I can apply what I've learned for the glory of Christ. Don't be surprised to hear about upcoming live action dramatic work along with 3D animation projects coming in the near future!

Listen to three new webisodes this month and follow the story where it left off:

• Tuesday, October 4th, download webisode 79, “Banker’s Haven” featuring the voices of Brian Woodman (Rezin), Shawna Smith (Mariah) and Matt Priest (Bank Teller).

• Tuesday, October 11th, listen to webisode 80, “Second To One” starring Rick Chambers (Glacus), Larry Foster-Goodrich (Harrack) and Shana Gagnon (Sasha).

• Tuesday, October 18th, listen to webisode 81, “Revealed” with voice actors Shawna Smith (Mariah), Rick Chambers (Glacus), Shana Gagnon (Sasha) and Micky Sykes (Jared).

And as with every webisode of the series, voice narration is provided by David Evans. Be sure to check back each month and listen to every webisode of the dramatic audio series!

I’ve been hot and cold when it comes to social media and its use with KTF Productions. I never really got a handle on how to effectively integrate it with the website and our productions. After a lot of trial and error, I think I’m finally on the right track. For facebook, I originally had a separate page for each of our productions and a group page for KTF in general. What I’m attempting to do now, is provide one facebook page for KTF Productions where every project, along with associated videos, photos and material are uploaded. Besides the KTF website and the Monthly Newsletter, facebook will now have the latest information as it happens with links, photos, video, audio and all sorts of goodies. In the process, I’m trying to get facebook fans of CMV and The Wartleys to migrate to this page as well, so that I only have to post information once. Hey, maybe the third times a charm. I’m also getting back on the Twitter bandwagon. So feel free to join me on the Social circuit!
