In French, most adjectives follow the noun that they modify.

There are a few very common adjectives that come before the noun that they modify. You can remember them by using the acronym – BAGS which stands for…

BEAUTY,AGE,GOODNESS,SIZE

Not only do these adjectives have a different placement, some of them have several forms! You will need to memorize these special forms!

Another similar adjective is joli(e) which means pretty. It does not have any special forms!

Par exemple – Tu as une jolie chambre à coucher!

NOTE:

In formal French, de is used instead of des with a plural adjective that precedes the noun. In informal French, people use des.

Another similar adjective is jeune which means young. It does not have any special forms!

3. GOODNESS – ADJECTIVES INCLUDE…

bon (m.)/bonne (f.) (good) and

mauvais (m.)/mauvaise (f.) (bad).

NOTE: Special form required for feminine form of bon! Otherwise, all forms are normal! {Add –e to make it feminine and add s to make it plural.}

PAR EXEMPLE –

Il est un bon père.

Elle est une bonne mère.

Le garçon est un mauvais enfant!

La fille est une mauvaise élève!

4. SIZE – ADJECTIVES INCLUDE…

petit(e) (short; small) and

grand(e) (tall; big).

You are already an expert with these adjectives. No special forms here!

PAR EXEMPLE -- Ils sont mes petits frères.

Elle est ma petite sœur.

J’ai un grand chien!

Nous avons une grande maison.

C. LA PRONONCIATION

If a noun begins with a vowel sound, there is a liaison or link between the preceding adjective and the noun. The –x or –s will sound like a – Z when you make this link!

E. – L’immeuble a de beaux appartements! Z
