WHY WOULD SOMEONE VISIT AND WHAT WOULD THEY EXPECT TO SEE?

The Notre Dame Cathedral is a magnificent structure with amazing detail and beautiful stained glass. The west front of the Cathedral is definitely a sight to see, with it’s 228ft tall towers! The south tower holds “Emmanuel”, an over 28,000 pound bold bell, and the oldest bell at the Cathedral. Many beautiful sculptures and fearful detailed gargoyles adorn the great building, and the gorgeous West Rose Window also attracts many. The portals depict incredible statues, typically posed in scenes, such as the Last Judgment Portal (right), or as dedicated saints. The jewel-like stained glass, although not considered the most beautiful in France, are stunning none the less!

Who Built the Monument?

Notre Dame was originally built by Childebert I, the French King in 528, as a church. It was destroyed by a later ruler, then rebuilt in 1163, by Maurice de Sully, when deemed the cathedral, “Saint Etienne”. During the French revolution, some of the statues and sculptures were destroyed, but were reconstructed in 1845, under Napoleon Bonaparte (right), and a spire was added. In 1990, the most recent restoration act has restored the Cathedral to its original splendor.

The Notre Dame Cathedral is famous for its beauty and splendor. The Cathedral is very old and has been though a lot of destructive history. Also, many have heard of or read, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, a fictional story about Quasimodo, a deformed bell ringer at Notre Dame. A reason Notre dame is know by many art fans is because Monet did many paintings of the great place of prayer (right).
