A Keen View of Humanity Nakamura Hideki

This landmark exhibition introduces to Japan two Singaporean artists who were born in the 1960s. In a natural extension of the movement to seek out directions among the newest generation of artists in Japanese society, the exhibition focuses on their contemporaries in present-day Singapore, While recognizing that cultures differ fundamentally from one part of the world to another, the exhibition strives to show how these Singaporean artists explore the problems of human existence that people everywhere share .

Contemporary Japanese art should beware of falling into the trap of blindly admiring and accepting the artistic traditions of a certain few countries while treating those of other countries as exotic curiosities. It is a fine thing to value and respect the traditions and artistic legacies of these countries, but it would be a dreadful mistake to ignore the spiritual condition of the people living there today. We must strive to grasp the seeds of possibilities that we Jack in ourselves but that thrive in other countries .

While absorbing the influences of the West, Singapore's leading contemporary artists continue to stand deeply rooted within Asian traditions as they endeavor to show their individual views of

the human condition. One such artist who has recently attracted much attentio n is Lim Poh Teck. He imbues an undulating mesh of lines with an inexhaustible living energy to create candid portrayals of people going about their daily lives. The influence of the tropical sun is felt strongly as are the desires, chaos, and angst that imbue his works with the earnest striving of hope.

Baet Y eok Kuan employs mixed media in his two-dimensional works and features living plants in his three-dimensional installations. Fixing his unrelenting gaze on the historical relationship between man and matter, he focuses on the harmony and conflicts that occur between humanity and the environment and attempts to describe the cycle of human life and the natural world in an exhaustive examination that sheds light on the questions of life and death . He thus presents an alternate view of the human condition, one that sees humanity as being neither in confrontation with nor submerged by the external world.

An Introduction to Contemporary Painting in Singapore Baet Y eok Kuan

Art is the most expressive element of any culture, and as such it should receive high recognition. The art of a culture also provides us with many clues that help in identifying the nature and character of the people of that culture. There is no single world culture that embraces all of the peoples of the globe. Neither are the cultures and arts of the world's many nations simple creations that suddenly appeared in full bloom overnight. They required centuries •• indeed, millennia •• in order to put forth blossoms of beauty; they are exquisite and complex entities that must not be limited by arbitrary definitions.

Singapore is basically a multi-racial, immigrant society that is populated from peoples from neighboring countries such as China, Malaysia, and India. Since all of these people brought their own religious beliefs and cultural values, Singapore is blessed with varied and numerous art forms deriving from many cultures.

Nevertheless, the various multi-cultural forms of art in Singapore lack any definite unity or independent "Singaporean" character. On a national level, Singapore did not engage in any cultural activities until the 1930s. In 1938, Mr. Lim Hak Tai established the first art school in the country, the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, which still thrives after these 52 years.

Today, the genre of painting in Singapore can be divided into three major categories.

First , is the medium of traditional Chinese painting. For themes, the Chinese-style painters focused upon landscapes, portraits, flora, and fauna until the 1950s; since then, they have widened their

palette to include local scenes and modern situations, and their art has become much more multi-faceted.

Second, is the medium of batik painting, the wax-resist dyeing art of the Malay people. It has evolved from depicting only the tropical forests and its treasures and traditio~al folk designs into an art form that can also capture the vibrant shapes and colors and modern abstract art and the jet-age in which we live.

Third , is the medium of modern art, the category of painting that has become the dominant form today. It developed from the European-based painting of landscapes and scenes from the everyday life of the people in the cotonial period into the varied art form it is today, be it expressed in a conservative or post-modern mode.

In Singapore, the development of a new art form comes later than developed countries . It is only in recent years that we have begun to see the fresh new paintings of unknown young artists appear in exhibitions throughout the land, and their advent is almost welcome.

We are lucky in that we can enjoy the freedom of creation here in Singapore; artists are completely free to follow any path they wish, be it art in an Oriental or a Western style, be it art in a traditional or a rebellious mode. But whichever path Singapore's artists choose to follow, we must not only allow all of the different art forms that appear to exist, we must also help them to flourish, in order that we may be able to see and develop a type of art that can truly be called Singaporean.
